Abstract

The article presents a study which uses the BED capture enzyme immunoassay (BED) to estimate HIV incidence among patients who will start or undergo antiretroviral treatment (ART). The study tested cryopreserved plasma samples from 505 HIV patients qualified for ART at Tygerberg Hospital HIV clinic in South Africa. Moreover, the results of the study show that 11.2% of patients suspected to have long-term HIV-1 infection and is about to start ART tested recent by BED.
