Purpose: Within the context of the European-funded JOLISAA project (JOint Learning in and about Innovation Systems in African Agriculture), an inventory of agricultural innovation experiences was made in Benin, Kenya and South Africa. The objective was to assess multi-stakeholder agricultural innovation processes involving smallholders. Approach: Country-based teams used bibliographic searches, interviews with resource persons and field visits to identify cases. The inventory was developed iteratively according to a common analytical framework and guidelines inspired by the innovation system perspective. Findings and practical implications: The completed inventory includes 57 documented cases, covering a wide diversity of experiences, in terms of types, domains, scales and timelines of innovation. The inventory confirms the diversity of stakeholders involved in innovation, the diversity of innovation triggers and drivers, and the frequent occurrence of market-driven innovation. It also illustrates more original features: the typically long timeframes of innovation processes; the common occurrence of "innovation bundles"; and an often tight yet ambivalent relationship between innovation initiatives and externally funded projects. National teams faced several challenges during the inventory process, for example, in gaining a common understanding and making consistent use of key innovation-related concepts, and in accessing relevant information, as some case holders were reluctant to share their experience freely. Originality/value: The JOLISAA inventory contributes to illustrating that African agriculture is responding actively to the many challenges it faces. Documenting and sharing such a palpable dynamism may help to counter some of the pessimism and negative publicity that African agriculture usually attracts and to increase the motivation of many for making innovation happen across Africa. Climate change in the Mediterranean-like regions of South Africa has resulted in increased rainfall variability, a delayed start to the wet winter season, and increased occurrences of out-of-season summer rainfall events. These changes in bioclimatic conditions are predicted to become more pronounced and, therefore, could result in poor seedling establishment and false breaks from the soil seed bank, followed by seedling desiccation in annual medic and clover pastures. This study therefore aimed to quantify and compare the responses of three annual Medicago species and five annual Trifolium species to drought stress imposed at the seed germination, seedling establishment, and early seedling growth stages. Three separate controlled trials were conducted. Firstly, the seeds were germinated in seed germination chambers at constant temperatures ranging from 5 to 30 °C, in 5 °C increments, with five osmotic treatments within each temperature, and germination was recorded daily. For the second experiment, seeds were planted at 100, 70, 50, and 30% of the soil's moisture-holding capacity without subsequent watering, and emergence was recorded daily. For the third experiment, one-month-old seedlings were subjected to two water-limitation periods (15 or 30 days), and their subsequent morphological responses were measured. The results from these experiments indicated that the species differed significantly in their responses to drought, and the best-performing species often differed when drought was imposed at different development stages. Five species—M. polymorpha L., M. truncatula Gaertn., T. alexandrinum L., T. vesiculosum Savi., and T. subterraneum L. ssp. subterraneum—were able to tolerate incidences of drought better than other species and, thus, should be prioritized for further research into the variation in drought tolerance between cultivars within these species. Inadequate nutrition limits small-scale livestock production by smallholder farmers in South Africa but can be addressed by the introduction of woody fodder species. Cutting woody plants to harvest fodder affects their productivity and thus it is necessary to determine the optimum cutting height. Cutting affects the productivity and survival of woody plants because it alters concentrations of non-structural carbohydrates, which are used to support their recovery. Since pigeon pea (Cajanus cajan (L.) Millsp.) is not widely grown in South Africa and is not managed as a pruned hedgerow, there was a need to investigate the effect of cutting height under local conditions, especially in areas that experience frost. The trial was established in November 2016, ran over two growing seasons (2016/2017 and 2017/2018) and concluded in August 2018. The treatments comprised three silvopastoral systems with Panicum maximum planted between pigeon pea hedgerows that were cut at 60 cm and 90 cm above the ground, or left uncut and sole P. maximum. Over the two year period, the pigeon pea plants cut at 90 cm above ground produced significantly more leaf, twig and total biomass than the plants cut at 60 cm. Cutting height also had a significant effect on the percentage twig, with pigeon pea plants cut at 90 cm having significantly higher percentage twig than those cut at 60 cm (P < 0.05). There was a significant effect of cutting height on stem sugar concentration and sugar: starch ratio but not for starch and total non-structural carbohydrate concentration (P > 0.05). In July 2018 there were a number of days with temperatures below 0 °C. Prior to this no mortalities had been observed, but the frost events resulted in die-off. The mortality rates were determined in August 2018 when it was clear which of the shrubs had clearly died. The shrub mortality rates were higher for pruned relative to unpruned shrubs, but the effect was not significant (P > 0.05). It was concluded that the choice of cutting height is important for maximising browse production. Future research should consider the effect of pruning on non-structural carbohydrate concentration and total pool in the roots to better understand the reasons for reduced production and shrub mortalities. Woody species, especially dinitrogen-fixing species, can provide multiple products including food, fuelwood and fodder. In cut-and-carry silvopastoral systems, woody trees are often severely pruned for harvesting nitrogen (N)-rich fodder. However, very few studies have assessed the influence of this management practice on symbiotic N2 fixation. The study was conducted at Fountainhill Estate, Wartburg, South Africa, to assess the influence of pruning height on N2 fixation of pigeon pea (Cajanus cajan) using the 15N natural abundance method. Pigeon pea was grown in association with Panicum maximum. The treatments were unpruned, and pruning at 60 or 90 cm height. Results showed that pruning at 60 cm height significantly decreased total N (P ≤ 0.05), percentage of N derived from atmospheric N2 (P ≤ 0.05) and amount of N2 fixed (P ≤ 0.05) compared with unpruned plants and those pruned at 90 cm height. It was concluded that harvesting fodder at 90 cm height should be practised for pigeon pea to optimise symbiotic N2 fixation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim: To test a method for the rapid assessment of cataract blindness in South Africa. Design: Randomised cluster-based cross-sectional survey (20 clusters of 50 each). Setting: Pension pay points in Moretele district, North West Province, South Africa. Subjects: Female pensioners aged ⩾60 years, and male pensioners aged ⩾65 years. Outcome measures: (1) Prevalence of cataract requiring surgery; (2) prevalence of blindness due to cataract; (3) cataract surgical coverage; (4) cataract surgery outcome; and (5) barriers to cataract surgery. Results: 1000 pensioners were screened (681 women and 319 men). 17.2% of pensioners had operable cataract (visual acuity <6/60); 95% Cl - 3.4% to 3.4%); 15.6% of pensioners were blind due to cataract (95% CI -3.1% to 3.4%); and 5.6% of pensioners had had previous cataract surgery, 55.4% with intraocular lens implant and 44.6% without intraocular lens implant. The cataract surgical coverage was 24.6%. 80% of people who had had surgery were satisfied with the result, but 26.8% had a poor outcome according to the World Health Organization criteria. The main barrier to uptake of surgery was a lack of awareness of the availability of the surgery. Conclusions: Rapid assessment of cataract at pension pay points is a useful and effective tool for our district Vision 2020 programmes in South Africa. Steps need to be taken to raise awareness of the availability of cataract surgery among indigent pensioners, and to improve the quality of visual outcome after surgery by ensuring routine monitoring of postoperative visual acuity. A longitudinal study was conducted of the nematode faecal egg counts (FECs) and body condition scores (BCSs) of goats of resource-poor farmers at Rust de Winter, Gauteng Province, Impendle, KwaZulu-Natal Province, and Kraaipan, North-West Province, South Africa. Periods of higher FECs occurred from December/January to March/April at Rust de Winter and at Impendle and from January to March at Kraaipan. Seasonal variations in body condition were evident in the goats at Impendle with the animals showing lower BCSs from June to October. The goats at Rust de Winter and at Kraaipan did not show clear seasonal variations, although the goats at Rust de Winter showed lower BCSs from mid-July to early December. The BCSs for Rust de Winter where the animals were grazed on a private farm were generally higher than those of the other sites, where communal grazing is practised. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
