The cratonic lithosphere–asthenosphere boundary is commonly invoked as the site of sheared peridotite and megacryst formation, a well-recognized petrological assemblage whose genetic relationships—if any—remain poorly understood. We have undertaken a comprehensive petrology and Sr–Nd–Hf–Ca isotope study of sheared peridotite xenoliths and clinopyroxene megacrysts from the c. 1150 Ma Premier kimberlite pipe on the central Kaapvaal craton in South Africa. New textural and mineral trace element evidence suggests that strong tectonic and magmatic overprinting affected the lower cratonic mantle over a vertical distance of ≥50 km from the lithosphere–asthenosphere boundary located at ∼200–225 km depth. Although modification of the central Kaapvaal cratonic mantle is commonly linked to the c. 2056 Ma Bushveld large igneous event, our thermobarometry, mantle redox, and Sr–Nd–Hf–Ca isotope data support a model in which volatile-rich low-volume melts and associated high-density fluids refertilized the lithosphere base shortly before or during asthenosphere-derived kimberlite and carbonatite magmatism at around 1150 Ma. This episode of lithospheric mantle enrichment was facilitated by exceptionally strong shear movements, as are recorded in the plastically deformed peridotites. We argue that stress-driven segregation of percolating carbonated melts contributed to megacryst formation along, or in close proximity to, shear zones within the cratonic mantle lithosphere. Integration of our results from the Kaapvaal craton and modern petrological concepts allows for the identification of a lithosphere–asthenosphere transition zone between ∼150 and 225 km depth. This horizon is defined by intersections of the ∼40–42 mW m–2 Premier paleogeotherm with (1) CO2–H2O-present solidus curves for peridotite (upper bound), and (2) typical mantle adiabats with potential temperatures between 1315 and 1420 °C (lower bound). At Premier, the most strongly deformed sheared peridotites occur mainly between ∼160 and 185 km depth, firmly within the lithosphere–asthenosphere transition zone. Contrary to many previous models, we suggest that sheared peridotite formation occurs in localized deformation zones spaced out across the entire width of the lithosphere–asthenosphere transition zone, rather than being restricted to a single thin layer at the craton base where mantle flow causes viscous drag. Hence, plate-tectonic stresses acting on the lower cratonic lithosphere may be accommodated by extensive networks of shear zones, which provide transient pathways and sinks for percolating volatile-rich melts, linking the formation of megacrysts and sheared peridotites. The Bushmanland Subprovince of the Mesoproterozoic Namaqua-Natal orogenic belt in southern Africa hosts numerous occurrences of monazite-magnetite-(biotite-apatite-sulfide)-bearing veins and granitoid dykes, including the Steenkampskraal vein system, which is one of the highest-grade REE-Th ore deposits in the world. Here, we provide whole-rock geochemical data along with zircon and monazite U-Pb dates and monazite Sm-Nd isotope analyses of these REE-Th-rich veins and granitoid dykes. The U-Pb geochronology indicates that the monazite-rich veins and granitoid dykes formed between 1050 and 1010 Ma, contemporaneously with late-Namaqua granulite-facies metamorphism. They are also coeval with the Koperberg Suite mafic magmas at 1060–1020 Ma and the late stage of a major event of A-type granitoid magmatism that occurred from 1100 to 1030 Ma (i.e. the Spektakel Suite). Similar to the mafic intrusive rocks from the Koperberg Suite, monazite-rich veins and granitoid dykes, located in the southern part of the Bushmanland Subprovince, have more radiogenic Nd isotopic compositions (ɛNd(t) ∼ −1 to zero) than equivalent dykes and veins to the north (ɛNd(t) ∼ −12 to −6). Mafic rocks of the Koperberg Suite reach Th and La concentrations of >400 ppm that significantly exceed those of other rock types from the region, except for the monazite-rich veins and granitoid dykes, which suggests a genetic link between these rocks. Within veins and granitoid dykes, monazite, biotite and magnetite are commonly anhedral and occur interstitially between the felsic minerals; they are, thus, late crystallizing phases. The whole-rock REE-Th concentrations of the granitoid dykes increase with Fe-Mg contents. Therefore, their incompatible element enrichment is not linked to assimilation-fractional crystallization processes. The Nd isotopic signature as well as Fe-Mg- and REE-Th-rich character of the Koperberg Suite and monazite-rich granitoid dykes might reflect partial melting of lithospheric mantle domains, metasomatized during previous Namaqua subduction events, and the mixing of mantle-derived melts with REE-Th-rich metamorphic fluids during their ascent through the crust. We propose that the monazite-magnetite vein mineralizations represent Fe-P-rich immiscible liquids that exsolved from mantle-derived magmas with compositions similar to the most mafic and monazite-rich granitoid dykes. Within this petrogenetic model, conjugate silicate-rich immiscible liquids formed the more felsic granitoid dykes characterized by lower modal abundances of biotite, magnetite and monazite. Although they do not reach similarly high REE-Th concentrations, other A-type granitoids from the region, represented by the Spektakel Suite, also share geochemical affinities with mafic igneous rocks from the Koperberg Suite; they may have originated by melting of underplated equivalents of these late-orogenic mafic rocks. The ca. 1153 Ma Premier kimberlite pipe on the Kaapvaal craton has been intruded by late-stage kimberlite and carbonatite magmas forming discrete 0.5 to 5 m wide dykes within the lower diatreme. On the basis of petrography and geochemistry, the fresh kimberlite dykes represent archetypal monticellite phlogopite kimberlite of Group-1 affinity. Their mineral compositions, however, show marked deviations from trends that are typically considered as diagnostic for Group-1 kimberlite in mineralogical-genetic classification schemes for volatile-rich ultramafic rocks. Groundmass spinel compositions are transitional between magnesian ulvöspinel (a Group-1 kimberlite hallmark feature) and titanomagnetite trends, the latter being more diagnostic for lamproite, orangeite (formerly Group-2 kimberlite), and aillikite. The Premier kimberlite dykes contain groundmass phlogopite that evolves by Al- and Ba-depletion to tetraferriphlogopite, a compositional trend that is more typical for orangeite and aillikite. Although high-pressure cognate and groundmass ilmenites from the Premier hypabyssal kimberlites are characteristically Mg-rich (up to 15 wt% MgO), they contain up to 5 wt% MnO, which is more typical for carbonate-rich magmatic systems such as aillikite and carbonatite. Manganese-rich groundmass ilmenite also occurs in the Premier carbonatite dykes, which are largely devoid of mantle-derived crystal cargo, suggesting a link to the kimberlite dykes by fractionation processes involving development of residual carbonate-rich melts and fluids. Although mineralogical-genetic classification schemes for kimberlites and related rocks may provide an elegant approach to circumvent common issues such as mantle debris entrainment, many of the key mineral compositional trends are not as robust for magma type identification as previously thought. Utilizing an experimentally constrained CO 2 -degassing model, it is suggested that the Premier kimberlite dykes have lost between 10 and 20 wt% CO 2 during magma ascent through the cratonic lithosphere, prior to emplacement near the Earth's surface. Comparatively low f O 2 values down to −5.6 ∆NNO are obtained for the kimberlite dykes when applying monticellite and perovskite oxybarometry, which probably reflects significant CO 2 degassing during magma ascent rather than the original magma redox conditions and those of the deep upper mantle source. Thus, groundmass mineral oxybarometry may have little value for the prediction of the diamond preservation potential of ascending kimberlite magmas. After correction for olivine fractionation and CO 2 -loss, there remains a wide gap between the primitive kimberlite and carbonatite melt compositions at Premier, which suggests that these magma types cannot be linked by variably low degrees of partial melting of the same carbonated peridotite source in the deep upper mantle. Several Archean granitoid-greenstone terranes are exposed on the southeastern Kaapvaal craton in South Africa, but they received little scientific attention compared to the archetypal greenstone belt successions of the Barberton Mountain Land at the eastern craton margin. This study reports on a detailed field and geochemical survey of the Buffalo River Greenstone Belt at the southern Kaapvaal craton margin in KwaZulu-Natal, with focus on hitherto unstudied komatiites and basaltic rocks from this volcanic succession. Cross-cutting relationships and new U-Pb zircon age determinations for several granitoid units establish a minimum age of 3.26 Ga for komatiitic volcanism, possibly as old as ca. 3.5 Ga if a 3.47 Ga granodiorite sheet is interpreted as 'intrusive' into the greenstone succession. Geochemical data reveal three types of Paleoarchean komatiites at Buffalo River. Spinifex textured lava flows represent Al-depleted komatiites, with subchondritic Al 2 O 3 /TiO 2 ratios and enrichment of LREE over HREE. The second type comprises Al-undepleted komatiites that have chondritic Al 2 O 3 /TiO 2 and flat REE patterns. The third type identified comprises Al-enriched komatiites that display suprachondritic Al 2 O 3 /TiO 2 ratios, with significant LREE depletion. The Al-depleted and Al-undepleted komatiites from Buffalo River are geochemically similar to komatiites from the 3.48 Ga Komati and 3.26 Ga Weltevreden formations of the Barberton Supergroup respectively, whereas the Al-enriched komatiites resemble the 3.33 Ga Commondale komatiites on the southeastern Kaapvaal craton. To explain the co-occurrence of three discrete komatiite types within a single volcanic succession at Buffalo River, we suggest that each major komatiite magmatic pulse originated from the same upwelling mantle source, from which melt was extracted at different pressure but similarly hot temperature conditions. 187Os/188Os data for the Al-depleted komatiites suggest an ultimate magma origin from a primitive mantle reservoir. The contrasting γOs values for Kaapvaal craton komatiites (zero to positive) and peridotitic mantle xenoliths (zero to negative) support a complementary nature of these lithologies as high-degree melts and depleted residues linked by vigorous mantle plume activity at around 3.5 Ga. Such a relationship can explain the contrasting Re/Os systematics of komatiites and lithospheric mantle peridotites, which creates the contrasting γOs over time. The highly siderophile element patterns of the Al-depleted komatiites from Buffalo River are similar to those of Barberton-type komatiites, for which an origin from the deepest upper mantle with high melt retention in an upwelling plume source was suggested. We confirm that this ca. 3.5 Ga mantle source had only 60–80 % of the platinum-group element budget of the modern ambient mantle, which points indirectly to a location at great depth in the aftermath of the meteoritic late accretion. Progressive melting of such an upwelling mantle source, to the point of majoritic garnet exhaustion, may explain the Al-undepleted and Al-enriched komatiites at Buffalo River. The presence of all three major komatiite types within a single volcanic succession may be linked to deep critical melting of a large mantle plume associated with growth of the Kaapvaal 'continent' at 3.5 Ga. The nature of the deep calcium geochemical cycle through time is unresolved, in part due to the dearth of information about the calcium isotope composition of Archean recycled oceanic crust. Remnants of such ancient oceanic crust are preserved in the form of cratonic mantle eclogites, brought to surface as xenoliths in kimberlite magma eruptions. The δ 44 / 40 Ca of fresh mantle-derived eclogite xenoliths (i.e., garnet and omphacite mineral separates) from the Bellsbank kimberlite on the Kaapvaal craton in South Africa are presented here in combination with their trace element compositions, garnet Fe3+ contents and δ 18 O values. The studied Bellsbank eclogite xenoliths have geochemical compositions that indicate oceanic crustal protoliths, with bulk Al 2 O 3 from 15 to 27 wt.%, Eu anomalies from 0.8 to 2.6 and, significantly, garnet δ 18 O values from +2.7 to +6.2‰. Garnet Fe3+/ΣFe contents yield log f O 2 (ΔFMQ) values between −4.0 and −1.2 for a depth range of 110–180 km, recording strong redox heterogeneity of the eclogite component within the Archean Kaapvaal mantle lithosphere. Reconstructed bulk eclogite MgO contents correlate negatively with f O 2 , suggesting that the redox compositions are related to magmatic differentiation during oceanic crust formation, excluding secondary metasomatic overprints. These data may thus emphasize that Archean basaltic oceanic crust had a similarly variable redox composition to modern MORB-type crust. Reconstructed bulk δ 44 / 40 Ca values for the Bellsbank eclogites range from +0.28 to +1.56‰. Although some of the xenoliths have δ 44 / 40 Ca values that overlap with the average mantle composition and modern MORB (+0.94 ± 0.1 and +0.83 ± 0.05‰), half of our dataset shows excursions to more extreme Ca isotopic compositions. Both higher and lower δ 44 / 40 Ca relative to mantle compositions are recorded by the eclogites, with a general negative correlation with δ 18 O suggestive of seawater-alteration of oceanic crust. The combined low δ 44 / 40 Ca (+0.28‰) and δ 18 O (+3.4‰) measured for one eclogite xenolith may record a subtle imprint by carbonate-rich mantle melts, which are known to contain isotopically light calcium contributed by recycled sediments. In contrast, the high δ 44 / 40 Ca of up to +1.56‰ for some eclogite xenoliths, coupled with strong LREE depletion, can be explained by calcium isotope fractionation during partial melting. The protracted history of recycled oceanic crust as probed by cratonic mantle eclogites is recorded by their highly variable δ 44 / 40 Ca– δ 18 O– f O 2 signatures. Whereas some of this heterogeneity can be linked to processes that operated on the Archean ocean floor such as seawater-alteration of basaltic crust, other sources of compositional variability are introduced by loss and addition of melts during subduction recycling and mantle residence. During the past two decades significant progress has been made in understanding the origin and evolution of kimberlites, including relationships to other diamondiferous magma types such as lamproites and aillikites. However, the association of kimberlites and carbonatites on continental shields remains poorly understood, and two opposing ideas dominate the debate. While one school of thought argues that primary carbonatite melts transform into hybrid carbonated silicate magmas akin to kimberlites by assimilation of cratonic mantle material, others use geochemical evidence to show that carbonatite magmas can evolve from near-primary kimberlite melts within the cratonic lithosphere. The 1.15 Ga Premier kimberlite pipe on the Kaapvaal craton in South Africa hosts several kimberlite and carbonatite dykes. Reconstructions of magma compositions suggest that up to 20 wt.% CO 2 was lost from near-primary kimberlite melts during ascent through the cratonic lithosphere, but the carbonatite dyke compositions cannot be linked to the kimberlite melts via differentiation. Geochemical evidence, including mantle-like δ13C compositions, suggests that the co-occurring kimberlite and carbonatite dykes represent two discrete CO 2 -rich magma batches derived from a mixed source in the convecting upper mantle. The carbonatites probed a slightly more depleted source component in terms of Sr-Nd-Hf isotopic compositions relative to the peridotitic matrix that was more effectively tapped by the kimberlites (87Sr/86Sr i = 0.70257 to 0.70316 for carbonatites vs. 0.70285 to 0.70546 for kimberlites; εNd i = +3.0 to +3.9 vs. +2.2 to +2.8; εHf i = -2.2 to +0.7 vs. -5.1 to -1.9). Platinum-group element systematics suggest that assimilation of refractory lithospheric mantle material by the carbonatite melts was negligible (<1 vol.%), whereas between 5 – 35 vol.% of digested cratonic peridotite account for the kimberlite compositions, including the low 187Os/188Os signature (Ɣ Os i = -12.7 to -4.5). The kimberlite and carbonatite dykes show similarly strong Nd-Hf isotope decoupling (ΔεHf i = -10.7 to -7.6 vs. -8.8 to -6.1), regardless of the variable lithospheric mantle imprints. This observation suggests a common sublithospheric origin of the negative ΔεHf signature, possibly linked to ancient recycled oceanic crust components in the convecting upper mantle to transition zone sources of CO 2 -rich magmatism. Mesoproterozoic kimberlite and carbonatite magmatism at Premier was coeval with subduction and collision events along the southern Kaapvaal craton margin during the 1,220 –1,090 Ma Namaqua-Natal orogeny associated with Rodinia supercontinent formation. Thermochronology suggests that the entire Kaapvaal craton was affected by this collisional tectonic event, and it appears that the changing lithospheric stress-field created pathways for deep-sourced kimberlite and carbonatite magmas to reach Earth's surface. We find that collision-induced (e.g., Premier) and continental breakup-related (e.g., Kimberley) kimberlite magmas are compositionally indistinguishable, with the inference that plate tectonic processes aid solely in the creation of magma ascent pathways without a major influence on deep mantle melting beneath cratons. It follows that on-craton kimberlite magmatism in the hinterland of collision zones is not necessarily more likely to entrain large sublithospheric diamonds than kimberlite eruptions linked to continental breakup. Abstract: We present 104 whole-rock geochemical analyses of hypabyssal kimberlite from the Lac de Gras field. Screens using Yb versus Al2O3 and ln Si/Al versus ln Mg/Yb effectively discriminate crustally contaminated samples. The remaining “non-contaminated” kimberlites samples have variable (5 to 50%) entrainment of cratonic peridotite. It is problematic to effectively screen for small amounts (<5%) of digested crust in samples with higher (>20%) contents of peridotite contamination. We utilize the Lac de Gras data suite to calculate, by two different methods, parent magma compositions and identify two (and potentially three) geochemically distinct parent magma types. The Lac de Gras parent magma compositions are compared to those calculated from other localities in Canada, Greenland, South Africa and Russia. Together, these calculated parent magmas define a range, albeit limited, of viable, yet distinct, kimberlite parent magma compositions. Geochemically, kimberlite parent magmas have high volatile contents (H2O and CO2), high MgO, and low SiO2, Al2O3 and alkalis, with K>Na and Na+K/Al<1. It is difficult to reconcile differences between various calculated kimberlite parent magma compositions from different cratonic areas as merely due to the effects of craton specific lithospheric mantle contamination, indicating the intra- and inter-cratonic variation of parent magma compositions reflect differing source region characteristics and/or partial melting regimes. • Orange River LCT pegmatites formed at 1 Ga during regional strike-slip tectonics. • Pegmatites formed by melting of Richtersveld magmatic arc or Bushmanland sediments. • Spodumene and coltan are magmatic. Lepidolite and microlite are metasomatic. • Metasomatism led to strong Ta enrichment and low Nb/Ta in country rocks. • Magmatic-hydrothermal processes are crucial for rare metal deposit formation. The 450 km long Orange River pegmatite belt intruded the Namaqua Sector of the Mesoproterozoic Namaqua-Natal Province, Southern Africa, at ca. 1 Ga. The western part of the belt is characterized by the occurrence of LCT pegmatites locally mineralized in Li, Ta, Nb, Be and Bi. Most of these mineralized pegmatites display zonation with a quartz-feldspar-muscovite-garnet-beryl-bearing aplite border and wall zone, a quartz-feldspar-spodumene-lepidolite-bearing intermediate zone, and a quartz-K-feldspar core. The pegmatites and their granodioritic country rocks commonly show evidence of albitization and greisenization (i.e. secondary muscovitization). In this study, detailed petrographic observations and the compositions of mica, feldspar, spodumene and Nb-Ta oxide minerals are reported. This information is combined with bulk country rock compositions and new U-Pb zircon and monazite ages plus Sm-Nd isotope compositions of monazite to constrain the origin and magmatic-hydrothermal evolution of weakly and strongly mineralized LCT pegmatites. The Li-Ta-Be Kokerboomrand I pegmatite emplaced at ca. 985 Ma during the main stage of pegmatite emplacement in the Orange River belt and regional strike-slip deformation. It has εNd(t) monazite = −14 ± 3 and potentially formed by partial melting of Paleoproterozoic rocks from the Richtersveld magmatic arc. Alternatively, Mesoproterozoic sediments of the Bushmanland Subprovince may also provide a suitable magma source for the Kokerboomrand I pegmatite. The rare metal contents of muscovite and columbite group minerals (CGM) increase from the weakly mineralized to strongly mineralized pegmatites, suggesting early-stage fractional crystallization or variable partial melting conditions. Mica Nb/Ta values of <14 and K/Rb ratios of <40 can be used as geochemical tools for Li-Ta-(Nb)-Be exploration in the region, and possibly in other pegmatite belts worldwide. Rare metal-bearing minerals crystallized throughout the magmatic-hydrothermal evolution of mineralized pegmatites. During the magmatic-dominated stage I, constitutional zone refining likely induced a decrease of spodumene Fe contents and increase of CGM Ta contents toward the pegmatite core. Stage II marks the pervasive circulation of an immiscible hydrosaline melt. This stage is characterized by the replacement of the primary mineral assemblage by lamellar albite (cleavelandite), (fluor)calciomicrolite and Cs-Ta-rich Li-muscovite and zinnwaldite. Stage III represents the progressive transition from a magmatic-hydrothermal system dominated by a Li-Cs-Ta-rich hydrosaline melt toward a system mainly involving (Li)-Cs-(Ta)-Bi-rich aqueous fluids. This stage is characterized by the crystallization of lepidolite and zero-valence-dominant pyrochlore as well as strong localized greisenization and Bi mineralization. Magmatic-hydrothermal alteration of the immediate country rock of the mineralized pegmatites is marked by the crystallization of albite, Li-Ta-Cs-rich mica, various Nb-Ta oxide minerals, and led to a strong decrease of the whole-rock Nb/Ta ratio plus significant rare metal enrichment. Our findings from the Orange River belt demonstrate that an important role can be ascribed to melt-melt and melt-fluid immiscibility and metasomatism in the formation of pegmatite-related rare metal deposits. Greisens and albitites associated with pegmatites and their immediate country rocks can be considered as favorable targets for Li-Ta mineral exploration. Multiple sulphur isotopic compositions of sulphides from Kaapvaal craton mantle eclogites allow to elucidate the recycling of sulphur into the deep Earth and to differentiate between recycled crust and mantle origins of eclogite-hosted sulphides, including the precious metals that they capture. We present multiple sulphur isotope ratio measurements by secondary ion mass spectrometry for sulphides from a collection of mantle-derived eclogite xenoliths from Proterozoic and Mesozoic kimberlite occurrences in South Africa (Premier, Roberts Victor, Jagersfontein). Previous work established that the host eclogites have elemental and oxygen isotopic compositions in support of seawater-altered oceanic lithosphere protoliths, and for many of these xenolith suites Archean ages have been suggested. The eclogite-hosted sulphides have δ 34 S values from −5.7 to + 29 ‰ , with the upper end of this wide range representing the highest-ever recorded δ 34 S composition of material derived from the Earth's mantle. The Δ 33 S values range from −0.29 to + 0.18 ‰ and do not record significant mass-independent sulphur isotope fractionation, i.e., there is no compelling S-MIF signature. Most of the sulphide grains have δ 34 S values that fall within a range between −6 and + 4 ‰ , and they probably retain an isotopic record of sulphides that formed originally within altered oceanic crust. In contrast, the highly positive δ 34 S values from +13 to + 29 ‰ detected in sulphide grains from a single eclogite xenolith are similar to those of marine sulphates, which were probably a minor sulphur component of the oceanic crustal protolith. The lack of a significant S-MIF signature in the eclogitic sulphides that show δ 34 S evidence for a recycled crust origin implies that this sulphur component stems from a < 2.4 Ga post-Archean surficial reservoir. This finding suggests that the cratonic mantle eclogites may have formed from post-Archean oceanic crust (e.g., Paleoproterozoic eclogite protoliths), or – as is preferred here – the 'surficial' sulphur was introduced into the cratonic root during relatively young metasomatic events and is thus unrelated to eclogite petrogenesis and Archean continent formation.
