This short editorial proposes a specific topic for comprehensive research in COVID-19 in the CEE area, namely the role of politicians and politics during the pandemic. The text includes three short country case studies (Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia), describing different aspects of the politics/political fighting relationship and the COVID-19 pandemic. The experts' arguments suggest that the "motto of the day" should be working together and not fighting each other. However, nothing ("almost nothing") like this is visible in our region – or at lease in our three case studies, the only positive aspect from this point of view is the joint call of all parliamentary group leaders for vaccination in Slovenia. By its content, the editorial calls for comprehensive research on the aims of the current antagonistic situation and possible actions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Calf rearing practices in Slovenian herds were investigated with questionnaire-based survey. The data was obtained from 293 farms in Slovenia about their management, especially milk and colostrum feeding protocol, manner of weaning, housing, hygiene on the farm and biosecurity measures. Majority of respondents think the colostrum supply is very important. In 77% of farms, calves receive the first colostrum meal within 2 hours after birth. Quality of colostrum is not considered in 59% of farms. The temperature of colostrum and milk check 73% of farmers, however majority do it manually without using thermometer. Farmers weans calves gradually, mostly considering the age at weaning (45%). Calves are weaned at mean age of 14.18 weeks. In 57.3% of farms, newborn calves are housed in individual pens. Thirty four percent of farmers are cleaning pens for newborn calves after each calf. Half of farmers observe their calves more than 15 minutes daily. Different biosecurity measures are used in 98% of farms. Many farmers are well aware that calf rearing management bear on later milk and meat production and some would need more persuasion to follow the appropriate management practices. Th e paper investigates residents' perceptions of tourism impacts in Koper and Piran municipality which are located on the Slovenian coast. Th e two municipalities have different tourism concentration defined as the ratio between the number of tourists and the number of residents. Specifi cally, the study attempts to explore diff erences between tourism impacts in the two municipalities. For the purpose of this study, tourism impacts are divided into economic, socio-cultural and environmental. Primary research was conducted on a sample of residents in the municipalities of Koper and Piran in April 2008. A survey was collected from111 residents in the study area. A descriptive statistics and t-test for independent samples were employed. Th e findings reveal that residents' perceptions of tourism differ between municipalities which have different tourism concentration. In fact, residents in the municipality with the higher tourism concentration perceive more negative tourism impacts, whilst, on the other hand, they do not perceive more positive tourism impacts. Negative environmental tourism impacts were found in both municipalities. Positive as well as negative socio-cultural and economic tourism impacts were confirmed in Koper and Piran municipality. The modern comprehension of tourist behaviour shows an urgent need to create a tourist destination as a system. Tourism supply needs to be integrated and well coordinated, including all necessary amenities for an enjoyable stay. The paper analyses tourists' attitudes in coastal destinations of Istria towards sustainable tourist supply in the Istrian countryside. The Karst landscape of Istria consists of rural areas that provide ideal opportunities for rural tourism development. An empirical research was carried among the sample of 538 tourists in coastal tourist destinations of Slovenian Istria. Findings and implications of the research are given in the paper. There were found characteristics and preferences of potential tourists. The main finding of the research is that more marketing efforts should be made to attract target markets of tourists. This paper examines the impacts of the Euro adoption in Slovenia on its tourism. For this purpose, the empirical research among foreign tourists in Slovenia was conducted on their perceptions of the Euro adoption in Slovenia during the second half of 2007. The multivariate factor analysis was performed, which confirmed the four common dimensions of the Euro impacts on Slovenian tourism: attractiveness, costs, expensiveness, and comparison. The mean values of the analyzed items indicate the most positive impacts of the Euro on the direct price comparison and the easiness of comparison among tourist destinations in the Euro zone. The empirical results suggest that the Euro adoption has had the greatest impacts on better comparisons among tourist destinations in the Euro zone, followed by a significant decline in travel-operational costs. The increase in the expensiveness of the destination among foreign tourists is confirmed, whereas no significant improvement in the attractiveness of Slovenia as a tourist destination was proved after the Euro adoption. The paper empirically examines the relationship between Slovenian GDP and international tourism expenditures of Slovenia in the period 1994-2006. For this purpose, regression analysis in different functional forms was used to examine the impact of GDP on international tourism expenditures. The results reveal positive and strong impact of GDP on international tourism expenditure in Slovenia in the given period of time. Further, income elasticity of outbound tourism demand was calculated leading to the conclusion that travelling in foreign destinations has characteristics of a luxury good for Slovenian people. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalences of FIV and FeLV infections in domestic cats by the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Of the 42 cats examined by the ELISA test, 14 (33.3 %) were seropositive for FIV antibody, 10 (23.8 %) for FeLV antigen, 1 (2.4 %) was positive for both viruses and 17 were negative for infection with either virus. In the PCR assay, 17 cats (40.5 %) were positive for FeLV, 11 (26.2%) for FIV, 9 (21.4%) for both viruses and 5 cats (11.9%) were negative for the presence of viral DNA. The average age of FIV positive cats was 6 and of FeLV 7 years. Infections were more common in outdoor cats (65% FIV, 61.1% FeLV positive) and in male cats (71.4% FIV, 80% FeLV). The results of both tests used in this study have shown high prevalence of both infections among cats in Slovenia. The ELISA method was found useful as a screening test for fast detection of FIV and FeLV infections, but additional testing with PCR was shown to be more effective in the characterization and progression of both infections. In Slovenia, like elsewhere in the European Union, the eGovernment is one of the features of the modern face of the public administration. The other features at the forefront of the makeover are the reduction of administrative barriers, the improvement of services offered by the public administration (and subsequently the satisfaction of its users), the introduction of quality management and business excellence tools, and human resource management. What we are doing in Slovenia is by no means a reform of the public administration, as there are no revolutionary changes. Instead, we prefer to speak of a process of perpetual improvement, as that applied in successful businesses, with the aim of constantly improving operations. The eGovernment project in Slovenia represents the use of information and communication technologies as a tool to making the public administration better. Technology can help the public administration function more transparent and make it easier to manage, reducing its operating costs and improving the quality and accessibility of its services. The intellectual capital in the Slovenian hotel industry has been improved in the past few years what is extremely desirable and necessary since today the Slovenian hotel industry is facing increased competition in the enlarged European single market. The paper presents an empirical analysis of the development of intellectual capital in the hotel industry in Slovenia between 2003 and 2006. In this period of time Slovenia entered the European Union (EU). The results show progress of intellectual capital and reveal some problems that the Slovenian hotel industry is still facing in the field of intellectual capital. The development of human and structural capital has seen progress; meanwhile development of customer capital has not been evidenced. More exactly, employee competence, employee innovativeness, business processes, information technology and distribution channels were further developed in the given period of time. Development of other parts or sub-components of intellectual capital has been neglected or they simply have not reached a higher level of development. Attitude to work, company culture and distribution channels are the least developed parts of intellectual capital in the Slovenian hotel industry in 2006. Hematological, serum biochemistry, and urinalysis values were determined for nine (two females and seven males) adult, free-living European wildcats (Felis silvestris) in the Kocevje Forests of the southern Slovenia. Samples were collected from August 1999 to March 2001. Cats were anesthetized with ketamine and medetomidine. Blood samples were taken by jugular venipuncture and urine samples by bladder puncture. A control group of domestic cats (F. silvestris catus) was assembled to determine if differences exist among blood and urine values between free-living European wildcats and domestic cats. Hematological, biochemical, and urine parameters were similar to those of the control group. Values of glucose, blood urea nitrogen, albumin, mean corpuscular value, basophile count, and alanine aminotransferase were significantly higher than values of the control group. All urine samples contained white blood cells and proteins, and seven of them contained red blood cells. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Although similar oral and dental diseases as seen in dogs, cats, ferrets, and other carnivores are expected in suricates, published data on their oral and dental diseases are rare. The objective of this report is therefore to describe oral and dental examination findings in a family of zoo suricates. In this cross-sectional clinical study, detailed oral and dental examination and full-mouth dental radiographs were performed in 6 suricates undergoing general anesthesia for their regular annual wellness check. Attrition/abrasion was commonly observed less so were dental fractures, but both conditions were found to be associated with endodontic disease. Periodontal disease of different stages was also commonly observed. As expected, dental radiography was essential to determine dental anatomy, to accurately diagnose oral and dental diseases, and to plan treatment. This report illustrates that several painful oral and dental diseases can affect suricates in captivity. Therefore, thorough oral and dental examination supported by dental radiography under general anesthesia is warranted also in these animals as a part of their annual wellness checks.
