We evaluated three estimation methods for fitting the three-parameter Weibull distribution to even-aged European beech (Fagus sylvatica) forests by using experimental tree diameter data collected in 3709 sample plots (500 m² each). The maximum likelihood estimation method (MLE), the method of moments (MOM) and the method of modified moments type 1 (MM1 ) were applied for fitting the Weibull function. The goodness-of-fit of stand parameters (total tree number, stand basal area, dominant stand diameter and mean quadratic diameter) was tested by MAE and RMSE, and the probability and cumulative density functions of trees per 5 cm diameter classes were additionally tested by the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test and compared with Kolmogorov-Smirnov's D statistic. All three methods are suitable for estimating stand parameters based on the fitted Weibull function. Fitting the diameter distribution per 5 cm diameter classes at the plot level was less accurate due to the low number of trees or irregular diameter distribution of trees. The MM1 method was found to be the most suitable for fitting the three-parameter Weibull distribution to beech forests represented by data derived from small plots. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Large and severe disturbances may erode the resilience of temperate forest ecosystems and alter their recovery dynamics, especially under global change. We investigated mid-term recovery in mixed mountain forests in Slovenia after three independent severe windstorms in 2008 created large disturbed patches. Across a network of 102 permanent plots and three inventories over the 11-year post-disturbance period, we monitored trends in density, composition, and structure of regeneration, which are key indicators of forest resilience. Ecological drivers of regeneration, including topography, microsites, and biotic interactions, were analysed using linear mixed models. We quantitatively assessed physiognomic recovery by comparing regeneration densities with the restocking target used in forest practice, and compositional recovery by comparison with pre-disturbance stand composition. Regeneration densities and structure tended to converge among post-disturbance treatments (planting vs. natural regeneration) 11 years post-disturbance, as density of natural regeneration substantially dropped between the second and third inventory. Some drivers of recovery (i.e. ground vegetation and distance to the forest edge) varied over time, while the effect of elevation on regeneration density was consistently negative. The results indicate that the forest sites generally show adequate resilience to large-scale wind disturbances, in terms of physiognomic recovery, but not in terms of rapid compositional recovery, as pioneer and light-demanding tree species increased in share compared to the pre-disturbance stands. In the future, climate change is expected to affect the spatial distribution of most tree species in Europe. The European beech (Fagus sylvatica), a drought-sensitive tree species, is currently distributed throughout Europe, where it is an ecologically and economically important species. In Slovenia, the European beech represents 33% of the growing stock, but such a proportion greatly varies across Europe. Whether such a variation is related to the climate environmental gradients or because of historical or management decisions is an as-yet unexplored question. For this study, we employed the Slovenian Forests Service inventory, where the proportion of beech in the forest stock has been monitored in 341,341 forest stands across the country. Modeled climate data from the SLOCLIM database, calculated for each of the stands, was also used to test the hypothesis that although beech forests have always been influenced by human activity, the dominance of beech trees in forest stands is at least partially dictated by the climate. The results showed the distribution of the main climate variables (annual precipitation, the share of summer and spring precipitation, and annual maximum and minimum temperatures) and how they affect the current dominance of beech trees at the stand level. Due to the large number and variability of forest stands studied, the results should be transferable to better understand and manage the climatic suitability and risks of Fagus sylvatica. Climate is a strong predictor of the geographic distribution of tree species, and thus climate change may trigger shifts in the distribution of a tree species and/or its demographic structure. In the study, we aim to comprehensively compare the distributions of four life stages of European beech (Fagus sylvatica) (i.e., regeneration, recruitment, young trees and mature trees) in forests in Slovenia, Central Europe, which are characterized by strong gradients of elevation (ELV), temperature (TEMP) and precipitation (PREC) to detect possible shifts in distribution and demography. Beech life stages were surveyed on 3366 plots. To depict disparities between ELV, TEMP and PREC distributions of beech life stages, we applied several non-parametric methods: basic statistical tests to study differences in medians, means, and 1st and 9th deciles; generalized additive models to study shifts in the optimum; and extreme value analysis to study shifts at the trailing and leading edges. A substantial shift in juvenile beech stages upward and toward colder sites was detected. However, the shift was not uniform along the distributions; the most significant shift was detected at the leading edge of ELV (+73 m) and TEMP (−2.6 °C), but surprisingly there was no beech movement identified at the trailing edge. The observed shift may be a result of the interplay between climate change, high spatial variability in microclimate, unexceptional droughts in the recent past, changes in forest use and possible limitations in the migration ability of beech and its adaptation capacity. Provenance trials are a valuable source of information, especially in species such as European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.), which will likely increase its distribution due to global warming. The current study compares radial increment and wood density of beech provenances in the juvenile development stage from contrasting environments in Europe (Belgium, Slovenia, Czech Republic, Italy) planted at a mesic to wet site in Slovenia and a xeric site in Hungary. Existing data (past measurements of diameters and height) were combined with new measurements of tree height, diameter, dendrochronological and resistance drilling density measurements to assess differences in provenance radial growth. The wood density data were evaluated using a Bayesian general linear model. In order to study the differences in radial increment in more detail, two weather-wise contrasting years (2014 and 2017) were selected from the last decade, based on calculations of the 12-month Standardized Precipitation-Evapotranspiration Index. The differences in average tree-ring width among provenances at each sampled site appeared to be relatively small when averaged over a whole decade of data. However, according to year-to-year data, some provenances grew faster than others, especially in favorable weather conditions. In unfavorable conditions, the differences in tree-ring widths among provenances were smaller. For most provenances, variation in tree-ring widths within the same provenance increased in unfavorable conditions. The difference between the provenances with the highest and lowest wood densities at both locations did not exceed 5%. The model results indicate that the Idrija (Slovenia) provenance probably has a higher median wood density than other studied provenances at both sites. Although the current study confirmed some differences in wood density between provenances and trial locations, the differences are negligible in practice due to their low magnitude and the fact that the analyzed trees were still juvenile. As beech has a diffuse-porous wood, negligible differences in wood density would also be expected in adult trees. Beech provenances for planting in relation to changing weather should probably be chosen for their ability to survive more extreme weather events rather than to improve radial increment or wood density, especially as the differences in wood density of juvenile trees are relatively small. Environmental conditions affect tree-ring width (TRW), wood structure, and, consequently, wood density, which is one of the main wood quality indicators. Although studies on inter- and intra-annual variability in tree-ring features or density exist, studies demonstrating a clear link between wood structure on a cellular level and its effect on wood density on a macroscopic level are rare. Norway spruce with its simple coniferous structure and European beech, a diffuse-porous angiosperm species were selected to analyze these relationships. Increment cores were collected from both species at four sites in Slovenia. In total, 24 European beech and 17 Norway spruce trees were sampled. In addition, resistance drilling measurements were performed just a few centimeters above the increment core sampling. TRW and quantitative wood anatomy measurements were performed on the collected cores. Resistance drilling density values, tree-ring (TRW, earlywood width–EWW, transition-TWW, and latewood width–LWW) and wood-anatomical features (vessel/tracheid area and diameter, cell density, relative conductive area, and cell wall thickness) were then averaged for the first 7 cm of measurements. We observed significant relationships between tree-ring and wood-anatomical features in both spruce and beech. In spruce, the highest correlation values were found between TRW and LWW. In beech, the highest correlations were observed between TRW and cell density. There were no significant relationships between wood-anatomical features and resistance drilling density in beech. However, in spruce, a significant negative correlation was found between resistance drilling density and tangential tracheid diameter, and a positive correlation between resistance drilling density and both TWW + LWW and LWW. Our findings suggest that resistance drilling measurements can be used to evaluate differences in density within and between species, but they should be improved in resolution to be able to detect changes in wood anatomy. European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) adapts to local growing conditions to enhance its performance. In response to variations in climatic conditions, beech trees adjust leaf phenology, cambial phenology, and wood formation patterns, which result in different tree-ring widths (TRWs) and wood anatomy. Chronologies of tree ring width and vessel features [i.e., mean vessel area (MVA), vessel density (VD), and relative conductive area (RCTA)] were produced for the 1960–2016 period for three sites that differ in climatic regimes and spring leaf phenology (two early- and one late-flushing populations). These data were used to investigate long-term relationships between climatic conditions and anatomical features of four quarters of tree-rings at annual and intra-annual scales. In addition, we investigated how TRW and vessel features adjust in response to extreme weather events (i.e., summer drought). We found significant differences in TRW, VD, and RCTA among the selected sites. Precipitation and maximum temperature before and during the growing season were the most important climatic factors affecting TRW and vessel characteristics. We confirmed differences in climate-growth relationships between the selected sites, late flushing beech population at Idrija showing the least pronounced response to climate. MVA was the only vessel trait that showed no relationship with TRW or other vessel features. The relationship between MVA and climatic factors evaluated at intra-annual scale indicated that vessel area in the first quarter of tree-ring were mainly influenced by climatic conditions in the previous growing season, while vessel area in the second to fourth quarters of tree ring width was mainly influenced by maximum temperature and precipitation in the current growing season. When comparing wet and dry years, beech from all sites showed a similar response, with reduced TRW and changes in intra-annual variation in vessel area. Our findings suggest that changes in temperature and precipitation regimes as predicted by most climate change scenarios will affect tree-ring increments and wood structure in beech, yet the response between sites or populations may differ. • Recruitment of beech, spruce and fir in uneven-aged stands studied on 200 m2 plots. • Optimal and critical levels of 18 influential factors determined with the Tobit model. • Stand basal area and the proportion of target tree species are key factors. • Stocking control is efficient for regulating recruitment of spruce and beech. • Fir recruitment is weakly limited by stand density and largely stochastic. Tree recruitment models are important for predicting the dynamics of uneven-aged forests. Previous studies of recruitment of European beech, Norway spruce and silver fir have shown different ecological amplitudes of these species. However, recruitment in uneven-aged stands and the values of environmental factors at which the greatest and poorest recruitment can be expected remain poorly explained. The main objectives of this study were to 1) explain how 39 stand, site and climatic factors and their interactions influence the number of recruited trees in uneven-aged forests; 2) determine the optimal and critical ranges of influential factors, including stand basal area, number of trees, proportion of tree species, shade casting, soil pH, site productivity, temperature and precipitation; and 3) estimate the maximum expected response of recruitment to changes in stand density while controlling for the effect of other limiting factors. A Tobit censored regression model was used to consider that the observed range of the number of recruited trees is censored at zero. The models were parametrized and validated using 30,963 forest inventory plots (200 m2 each) in uneven-aged forests in Slovenia. The models, which used 9 stand, 6 site and 3 climatic factors, explained 15 %, 10 % and 8 % of the total variation of the number of recruited spruce, fir and beech, respectively. Stand structure was the most important factor, with stand basal area (BA) and the proportion of the studied species having the greatest effect. Site factors including soil pH and rockiness were important for fir recruitment. The number of recruited beech and spruce was positively influenced by decadal precipitation. Higher temperatures decreased recruitment of spruce. Beech was the only species sensitive to shade casting. Recruitment of beech was higher if shade was imposed by tree species other than beech. The optimal and critical ranges of limiting factors differ between species. The model suggests that the optimal stand basal area for recruitment of beech is ≤ 19 m2/ha, which is higher than that for spruce (≤ 16 m2/ha) but lower than that for fir (≤ 28 m2/ha). The maximum predicted response of the studied species to changes in stand basal area shows that stand density control is efficient for regulating recruitment of spruce and beech, but not for fir. • Asymmetric effects of precipitation anomalies on beech growth were detected with forest inventories. • More extreme precipitation anomalies had disproportionally large effects on diameter growth. • Growth reductions in dry extremes were 3 times greater than growth increases in wet extremes. • Stand basal area, the social status of a tree and tree species diversity significantly affect growth. In temperate forests, precipitation-productivity relationships have usually been considered linear and symmetric, i.e. under conditions of nominal precipitation variability, trees are able to compensate for reduced growth during dry extremes with increased growth during wet extremes. However, under severely dry/wet conditions tree responses may be nonlinear and asymmetrical. Forest inventory data and standardized drought indexes such as the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) can be used to test for asymmetries in the relationship between aboveground net primary production and precipitation. Based on forest inventory data from Slovenia (51,734 plots, 365,885 individual tree measurements in the period 1992-2013), we estimated the effect of precipitation anomalies on the diameter increment of European beech in various climatic, site and stand conditions. Beech responds asymmetrically to precipitation anomalies even under moderately variable precipitation. An individual tree growth model with 3 tree, 5 stand, 6 site and 4 climate variables explaining 32.6% of the total variance suggests that growth reductions in extremely dry periods are 3.0 times greater than growth increases in extremely wet periods. A comparison of 108 natural cubic spline tree diameter models shows that giving more weight to more extreme deviations from average summer precipitation explains significantly more variance compared to using the average SPI in the summers between the two censuses. We conclude that negative asymmetry can be detected on a temporal scale of a decade with much coarser data than tree-ring chronologies. However, even under |SPI| > 1.5 and a negative trend in the SPI on 60% of the plots at an average rate of -0.2/year, precipitation anomalies contributed < 1% to the diameter increment compared to stand (57%) and site (4%) factors. At the same magnitude of climate anomalies and the same stand density and levels of competition, beech is expected to grow better in structurally and compositionally diverse stands. Abstract: Among all silver fir forest types in Slovenia, most changes in forest composition are evident in Dinaric silver fir and beech forests, in which ageing and reduction of silver fir populations compared to European beech is evident. The situation has worsened due to a high browsing rate and environmental changes, causing a decline in abundance and a shift in silver fir′s spatio-temporal distribution. The photosynthesis response to different light and CO2 (max. photosynthetic rate –A max, compensation points –I c, quantum yield –Φ), the morphological response in young beech and fir to shade, and the growth response of adult trees were compared on sites with a single selection method, group selection method and old growth, during three consecutive vegetation periods (2009, 2010 and 2011). Three plots were established on each site, each with comparable light conditions according to the indirect site factor – ISF (%) under mature shelter, forest edge and open light conditions. In the old growth forest, beech and fir were more shade-tolerant and had a greater reaction to different light levels or elevated CO2 concentrations, compared to managed forest sites. Fir and beech express more physiological and morphological shade-tolerant characteristics on sites with single selection treatment, and differences are also evident in the growth responses of the two species. To establish conditions under which fir would be able to compete with beech, longer regeneration periods should be applied, with a gradual opening of the mature canopy, similar to conditions in old growth. Based on data acquired from the spatial information system Silva-SI, the majority of the entire forest area in Slovenia (22,220 forest compartments with a total area of 7446km2, classified into eight forest categories) was analysed for changes in the distribution of European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) in the period 1975–2005 using a binary logistic regression model in terms of selected site, stand and management variables. Additionally, changes in the abundance of beech in forest stands in which beech was present at the beginning and the end of the analysed period were analysed. Beech expanded its area by more than 1200ha per year on average, i.e. the annual expansion rate amounted to 0.24%. Among the 18 studied variables, three site, four stand and no management variables were included in the binary logistic regression model of beech expansion. Beech expansion was more pronounced at lower altitudes, on sites with steep topography, and on sites with a higher proportion of beech in potential natural vegetation. The probability of beech expansion reduced by a factor of 0.54 when the distance to the nearest compartment with beech increased by 1km. Among other stand variables, the proportion of early successional phases and the proportion of silver fir (Abies alba Mill.) and Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) also influenced the expansion of beech. During the observed period the growing stock of beech almost doubled, its proportion in total growing stock increasing from 27% to 32%. Significant differences were found in changes of beech proportion in the total growing stock among different forest categories; a decrease in the beech proportion was registered in alpine coniferous forests and thermophilous deciduous forests, while in other forest categories the proportion of beech increased. The fungus Pseudodidymella fagi is spreading in Europe and causing leaf blotch of European beech, Fagus sylvatica. Between 2008 and 2017, outbreaks of P. fagi were observed on European beech in Switzerland, Germany (also on F. orientalis), Austria, and Slovakia. In Slovenia, leaf blotch symptoms were first observed on F. sylvatica in 2018. P. fagi was identified as the causal agent of the observed symptoms in Slovenia by morphological examinations together with sequencing of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of the rDNA. This study links the fungus to the expansion of the known distribution of the disease to Slovenia, and based on in vitro pathogenicity trials, also to a new potential host, Quercus petraea. The pathogenicity tests confirmed F. sylvatica and F. orientalis as hosts for P. fagi, but not Castanea sativa, where pathogenicity to F. orientalis was proved for first time in vitro. Although Koch's postulates could not be proven for C. sativa, it seems to be partially susceptible in vitro because some of the inoculation points developed lesions. Additionally, damage to Carpinus betulus related to P. fagi near heavily infected beech trees was observed in vivo but was not tested in laboratory trials. Based on the results and our observations in the field, it is likely that P. fagi has a wider host range than previously thought and that we might be witnessing host switching. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
