The Lower Silurian Longmaxi Formation in the south of Sichuan is a key player in the exploration and development of shale gas in China. Due to a highly complex topographic area, electromagnetic methods (EM) become important exploration means in this area. Many studies have been conducted on the shale mineral composition and electrical properties of shale, however, the correlation between sedimentary environments and the electrical properties of shale remain poorly understood. The electrical properties and sedimentary environment of the organic‐rich shale of the Longmaxi Formation have been studied by means of X‐ray diffraction, organic geochemistry, scanning electron microscopy and complex resistivity measurements. The discovered high quartz content of the Longmaxi Formation shale results in low resistivity. Deep‐water shelf biogenic quartz contributes lower resistivity more than that of shallow‐water terrigenous quartz. The deep‐water anoxic and organic sedimentary environment led to major enrichment of pyrite, leading to a high polarization effect in shale. We present the correlation between the lithofacies types and electrical properties of Longmaxi Formation. The mixed siliceous shale lithofacies is the most favorable among the three lithofacies, which is characterized by high total organic carbon (TOC) content, high brittleness mineral content, high polarization and low resistivity ("three high and one low"). This feature is an effective identification of shale gas reservoirs by electromagnetic prospecting. Our study can provide constraints on electrical parameters of rocks for electromagnetic "sweet spot" exploration of shale gas, and so this has important geological significance to shale gas exploration and development. Potassium‐rich brine in the Sichuan Basin has been much studied in recent years, but few studies have focused on the distribution and migration of salt basin and the differences of potassium formation mechanisms. This work examined the salt‐gathering and potassium formation of potassium‐rich brine during the Triassic in the Sichuan Basin using lithofacies palaeogeographic depiction and geochemical analyses. (1) The favorable sedimentary facies controlling the formation of potassium‐rich brine during the Triassic in the Sichuan Basin are evaporation platform and restricted platform, whereas the salt basin is one of the main factors controlling the poly‐salt center. (2) The distribution and migration of this salt basin were affected by certain factors. The salt basin of the Jialingjiang Formation was mainly distributed in the east and central Sichuan Basin, whereas that of the Leikoupo Formation was mainly distributed in the central and west Sichuan Basin. The sedimentary centers have gradually moved westward and become smaller. (3) Three main formation mechanisms were identified for the potassium‐rich brine during the Triassic in the Sichuan Basin, i.e., evaporation and concentration of seawater, surface fresh water leaching, and deep water‐rock reaction. Fresh water leaching was characterized by low anomaly δ18O and δ13C values. Water‐rock reaction was mainly related to temperature, and high temperature environment (caused by burial depth, overthrust and deep hydrothermal fluids) was beneficial to water‐rock reaction. The characteristics of water‐rock reaction do not correspond to the increase ratio of K•103/Cl and Br•103/Cl in brine, and the Rb+ content of the brine was high. (4) The formation mechanisms of potassium‐rich brine differed between different areas of the Sichuan Basin. In east Sichuan, the evaporation and concentration of seawater, together with meteoric fresh water leaching, was the main formation factor, whereas the evaporation and concentration of seawater and water–rock reaction predominated in west Sichuan. This study of the sedimentary environment and formation mechanisms is of significance to the exploration and exploitation of potassium‐rich brine in the Sichuan Basin. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Primary depositional and diagenetic processes exert very important influences on shale gas reservoirs. Rock electrical properties are an important basis for making reservoir prediction using the electromagnetic method (EM). However, there is still a lack of understanding about the impact of the sedimentary diagenesis process on shale electrical properties, this study focuses on the impact of diagenesis on rock properties. In this study, rock electrical properties are studied based on electromagnetic experiments. We systematically studied the lithofacies of different depositional paleoenvironments and diagenetic processes, and the influence of diagenetic evolution on the rock electrical properties was discussed, by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), low-temperature nitrogen adsorption (LTNA), and trace element (TE) geochemical analysis. Based on the study of mineral composition, grain assemblages and pore systems, we identified four lithofacies in the Longmaxi Formation: siliceous shale, siliceous-argillaceous mixed shale, silty shale and argillaceous shale. Redox proxies (U/Th, V/Cr, and Ni/Co) indicate that the siliceous shale was deposited in a relatively anoxic and reducing environment, indicating a deep-water shelf depositional paleoenvironment. The siliceous-argillaceous shale, silty shale and argillaceous shale were deposited under a relatively dysoxic-oxic environment, indicating a shallow-water shelf depositional paleoenvironment. The order of resistivity values of the lithofacies within the Longmaxi Formation is 36.78 Ω m (siliceous shale), 66.81 Ω m (siliceous-argillaceous mixed shale), 79.54 Ω m (silty shale), and 107.00 Ω m (argillaceous shale), and the resistivity decreases with an increase in porosity. The siliceous shale has the most abundant authigenic quartz, which filled the primary pores forming a rigid framework during the gas window, inhibited compaction, increased the distribution of organic matter (OM), and enhanced the development of OM pores. The high TOC content and high maturity of siliceous shale at the bottom of Longmaxi Formation make the OM pores more developed. Pyrite, conductive fluid and pore network under the main control of OM pores in shale form a conductive circuit when AC voltage is input, which increases the exchange capacity of cations and leads to the phenomenon of low resistivity. The interconnected OM pore network, both depositionally and diagenetically derived, affects the electrical properties of the Longmaxi shale. This study reveals that electrical properties of shale rocks and its variations can be impacted by the depositional environment and diagenetic processes. This work provides resistivity parameters for the electromagnetic exploration of shale gas under complex terrain conditions and provides a theoretical basis for later interpretation. • Shale lithfacies with different sedimentary environments and diagenetic processes have different electrical properties. • The shale of Longmaxi formation has the characteristics of high TOC content and low resistivity. • OM pores network is the fundamental factor affecting the electrical properties in Longmaxi shale. • It provides parameters of rock electricity for EM exploration of complex terrain and for inversion interpretation. The upper Permian Longtan Formation (LTF) shale is a new shale gas exploration and development focus in China, which was formed in a transitional depositional environment. Because of the difference in the sedimentary environment between marine-continental transitional shale and marine shale, the enrichment characteristics and mechanism of organic matter (OM) are very different. Because of a weak research foundation, the enrichment mechanism of OM in the LTF shale in the Sichuan Basin is still unclear. In this paper, shale samples of the upper Permian LTF from the Well F5 were collected, and the abundance, source and sedimentary environment of organic matter were studied by using paleoclimate, detrital input, redox, paleoproductivity and sedimentation rate parameters. The results show that the TOC content of the LTF shale is high (average = 3.04%) and reaches the high to overmature stage (average = 2.46%), indicating a favorable source rock. The LTF shale was deposited in a humid and hot climate, which was conducive to the growth and prosperity of a large number of plants. The source of organic matter was mainly terrestrial plant fragments. The sedimentary environment of the LTF shale was oxic, it had a high sedimentation rate, which reduced the oxidation rate of OM, promoted the rapid deposition of OM, and ensured the preservation of organic matter. In summary, the enrichment of OM of LTF shale in the Sichuan Basin was affected by the sedimentary environment, which was complicated. The main controlling factors were detrital input, redox conditions and sedimentation rate. • The geochemical characteristics of Permian Longtan Formation (PLTF) shale in eastern Sichuan are analyzed. • The sedimentary paleoenvironment of PLTF shale in eastern Sichuan is reconstructed. • The main controlling factors of organic matter enrichment of PLTF in eastern Sichuan are studied for the first time.
