Since the development of shale gas in the Wufeng–Longmaxi Formation in the Sichuan Basin, China's shale gas production and reserves have increased rapidly. The southeastern margin of the Sichuan Basin is located in a normally pressured transition zone, where single well gas production varies greatly under complex geological structures. In order to reveal the shale gas enrichment mechanism and favorable shale gas regions, shale gas samples from production wells were collected from different structures, with the formation pressure coefficient ranging between 0.98 and 1.35. The gas components and carbon isotope characteristics of normally pressured shale gas were investigated. The carbon isotope characteristics of the Wufeng–Longmaxi shale gas from the basin scale was mainly controlled using thermal maturity; as the thermal maturity increased, heavier carbon isotopes were found, in addition to drier shale gas. For normally pressured shale gas, the composition of δ13C1 and δ13C2 becomes heavier, and the dryness coefficient decreases with the decreasing pressure coefficient; this is not consistent with the results from thermal evolution. By comparing possible influencing factors, it is evident that the change in geological structure destroys the original shale gas reservoir, which leads to the escape of some gases, and it may be the main factor that contributes to the gas geochemical characteristics of the normally pressured shale gas. Compared with the geological parameters of the shale samples, such as mineral composition, organic abundance, organic pore distribution, and gas content, the carbon isotope characteristics of normally pressured shale gas show a higher efficiency, thus indicating favorable sweet spot evaluations for shale gas in the studied areas. Organic matter (OM)-hosted pores play important roles in controlling the porosity and gas content of gas shales. However, the control of organic pore development and preservation remains poorly understood, partly because of the inability to distinguish OM types under the scanning electron microscope (SEM). In this study, seven over-mature Wufeng-Longmaxi Shale samples (equivalent vitrinite reflectance 1.93%–3.07%) were investigated with organic petrography and scanning electron microscope to study the origin of OM and development of organic pores in this black shale succession. Correlative light and electron microscopy was employed to examine pore development in individual macerals. Organic petrographic observations show that OM in these over-mature black shales is dominated by pyrobitumen and graptolites (> 90 vol% of total OM based on point counting). Pyrobitumen mainly occurs as matrix bitumen in the fine-grained matrix, and also as a mixture with clay minerals and fossil cavity infillings. Vitrinite-like particles are minor constituents of OM in the Wufeng-Longmaxi Shale, and their average reflectance, reflectance distribution, and morphology suggest that they may be derived from graptolite fragments lacking diagnostic features and acritarchs. OM type critically controls the development of organic pores. Organic pores primarily occur in pyrobitumen, whereas other macerals are mostly non-porous when examined under the SEM. The fractured-vuggy carbonate reservoirs display strong heterogeneity and need to be classified into different types for specific characterization. In this study, a total of 134 cores from six drilled wells and six outcrops of the Deng #2 and Deng #4 members of the Dengying Formation (Sichuan Basin, Southwest China) were selected to investigate the petrographic characteristics of void spaces in the fractured-vuggy carbonate reservoirs. Four void space types (VSTs) were observed, namely the solution-filling type (SFT), cement-reducing type (CRT), solution-filling breccia type (SFBT) and solution-enlarging fractures and vugs type (SEFVT). The CRT void spaces presented the largest porosity and permeability, followed by the SEFVT, SFBT and SFT. The VSTs presented various logging responses and values, and based on these, an identification method of VSTs using Bayes discriminant analysis (BDA) was proposed. Two test wells were employed for the validation of the identification method, and the results show that there is good agreement between the identification results and core description. The vertical distribution of VSTs indicates that the SFT and SEFVT are well distributed in both the Deng #2 and Deng #4 members. The CRT is mainly found in the Deng #2 member, and the SFBT occurs in the top and middle of the Deng #4 member. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
