This work is part of a study on the impact of black carbon (BC) transfer from various sources to the Arctic on climate change in the region. The main objectives are to develop software for analyzing the Lagrangian transport of air particles; assessing the deposition of aerosol particles by precipitation and the concentration of particles in the atmosphere; and obtaining, for specific conditions of atmospheric circulation during severe fires in the years of maximum reduction in the Arctic sea ice area, estimates of the relative residence time of air particles emitted by these fires over the Arctic Basin (AB), as well as the proportion of BC deposited in the AB from fires. This software package contains a module for calculating Lagrangian trajectories from a 4-dimensional wind array (u, v, ω, t), which contains horizontal wind components and an analog of vertical speed available from reanalysis, as well as modules for the postprocessing of the found trajectories, which allow us to obtain in a given area the residence time estimates, 3-dimensional BC concentration, and BC deposition on the surface, also using reanalysis data and some empirical constants. Since the main decrease in the Arctic sea ice area occurred in 2 years, 2007 and 2012, it was supposed to analyze the fires of these years; however, in 2007, there were no great fires, and in 2012 one fire was much larger than the others (K-217, March–June). This fire was chosen for the experiments: several sets of trajectories were obtained for it, corresponding to various options for choosing the initial conditions, and estimates were obtained for the fraction of trajectories that passed over the Arctic basin, the time spent there, and the fraction of BC deposited in the AB. Together, these estimates led to the conclusion that Siberian fires can hardly be the leading cause of the accelerated melting of Arctic sea ice. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Using Modern‐Era Retrospective analysis for Research and Applications Version‐2 (MERRA‐2) re‐analyses, we have examined recent trends (2000–2019) in transport of surface carbonaceous aerosols (CAs), that is, organic carbon and black carbon, to the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere (UTLS) during the Asian summer monsoon (ASM). We find a significant increased concentration of UTLS CA, linked to a linear trend in an expansion of the Asian Summer Monsoon Anticyclone (ASMA). Over core monsoon latitudes (25°–35°N), the trends in UTLS CA are enabled by increased upward transport from surface sources via an intensified monsoon meridional circulation, with increased latent heating over the southern Tibetan Plateau and foothill regions, enhanced by feedback processes associated with radiative heating by UTLS CA. In the extra‐tropics, increased UTLS CA stems primarily from an extended source of increased wildfire emissions over eastern Siberia and northern Asia, coincident with a large‐scale anomalous anticyclone with enhanced surface warming and drying near (80°–120°E, 55°–70°N). Here, CAs are transported upward from the surface to the ULS, likely by increased pyro‐convection associated with enhanced wildfires, and enter the tropical UTLS via increased equatorward transport on the eastern flanks of anomalous upper‐level anticyclones, coupled to the expanded ASMA. Overall, the increasing UTLS CA trends associated with expansion of the ASMA are consistent with a hydrostatic expansion of a warming troposphere, reflected in a rise in the tropical tropopause and consequential dynamical adjustments of the ASM subtropical jetstream, modulating the climate of the greater ASM region. A warming Arctic is expected to exacerbate wildfires in Siberia, potentially creating a critical feedback to the Arctic climate change. However, our understanding of these fire-climate interactions remains limited. This study investigated changes in East Siberian wildfires and their influence on fire emissions, aerosol optical depth (AOD), and the surface clear-sky insolation across the Siberian Arctic from 2000 to 2020 using satellite observations. Our analysis reveals a substantial increase in wildfires, with fire counts doubling (a 114% increase) and fire radiative power surging by 8.4 × 106 MW compared to the early 21st century. Over 93% of this increase occurred during the boreal summer months. These intensified wildfires led to a significant rise in aerosol emission (organic carbon, PM2.5, and black carbon) exceeding 75% in East Siberia. Consequently, fire-season AOD in the Siberian Arctic increased by 33% (6.0 × 10−2), with 85% (5.1 × 10−2) attributable to wildfire changes. The wildfire-associated increase in AOD resulted in enhanced clear-sky dimming of 4.1 ± 3.2 W m−2 across the Siberian Arctic from 2000 to 2020. These findings suggest a critical feedback mechanism: a warming Arctic drives increased wildfires in Siberia, which in turn significantly impact the Arctic surface radiative budget through enhanced clear-sky dimming. Black carbon (BC) particles in the Arctic contribute to rapid warming of the Arctic by heating the atmosphere and snow and ice surfaces. Understanding the source contributions to Arctic BC is therefore important, but they are not well understood, especially those for atmospheric and snow radiative effects. Here we estimate simultaneously the source contributions of Arctic BC to near-surface and vertically integrated atmospheric BC mass concentrations (MBC_SRF and MBC_COL), BC deposition flux (MBC_DEP), and BC radiative effects at the top of the atmosphere and snow surface (RE BC_TOA and RE BC_SNOW) and show that the source contributions to these five variables are highly different. In our estimates, Siberia makes the largest contribution to MBC_SRF , MBC_DEP , and RE BC_SNOW in the Arctic (defined as >70 ∘ N), accounting for 70 %, 53 %, and 41 %, respectively. In contrast, Asia's contributions to MBC_COL and RE BC_TOA are largest, accounting for 37 % and 43 %, respectively. In addition, the contributions of biomass burning sources are larger (29 %–35 %) to MBC_DEP , RE BC_TOA , and RE BC_SNOW , which are highest from late spring to summer, and smaller (5.9 %–17 %) to MBC_SRF and MBC_COL , whose concentrations are highest from winter to spring. These differences in source contributions to these five variables are due to seasonal variations in BC emission, transport, and removal processes and solar radiation, as well as to differences in radiative effect efficiency (radiative effect per unit BC mass) among sources. Radiative effect efficiency varies by a factor of up to 4 among sources (1471–5326 W g -1) depending on lifetimes, mixing states, and heights of BC and seasonal variations of emissions and solar radiation. As a result, source contributions to radiative effects and mass concentrations (i.e., RE BC_TOA and MBC_COL , respectively) are substantially different. The results of this study demonstrate the importance of considering differences in the source contributions of Arctic BC among mass concentrations, deposition, and atmospheric and snow radiative effects for accurate understanding of Arctic BC and its climate impacts. As explained in the latest Arctic Monitoring and Assessment Programme (AMAP) report released in early 2021, the Arctic has warmed 3 times more quickly than the planet as a whole, as well as faster than previously thought. The Siberian Arctic is of great interest mainly because observations are sparse or largely lacking. A research aerosol station has been developed on Bely Island (Kara Sea) in western Siberia. Measurements of equivalent black carbon (EBC) concentrations were carried out at the "Island Bely" station continuously from August 2019 to November 2020. The source origin of the measured EBC and the main contributing sources were assessed using atmospheric transport modeling coupled with the most updated emission inventories for anthropogenic and biomass burning sources of BC. The obtained climatology for BC during the period of measurements showed an apparent seasonal variation with the highest concentrations between December and April (60 ± 92 ng m -3) and the lowest between June and September (18 ± 72 ng m -3), typical of the Arctic haze seasonality reported elsewhere. When air masses arrived at the station through the biggest oil and gas extraction regions of Kazakhstan, Volga-Ural, Komi, Nenets and western Siberia, BC contribution from gas flaring dominated over domestic, industrial and traffic sectors, ranging from 47 % to 68 %, with a maximum contribution in January. When air was transported from Europe during the cold season, emissions from transportation were more important. Accordingly, shipping emissions increased due to the touristic cruise activities and the ice retreat in summertime. Biomass burning (BB) played the biggest role between April and October, contributing 81 % at maximum in July. Long-range transport of BB aerosols appeared to induce large variability to the absorption Ångström exponent (AAE) with values > 1.0 (excluding outliers). As regards the continental contribution to surface BC at the Island Bely station, Russian emissions dominated during the whole year, while European and Asian ones contributed up to 20 % in the cold period. Quantification of several pollution episodes showed an increasing trend in surface concentrations and frequency during the cold period as the station is directly in the Siberian gateway of the highest anthropogenic pollution sources to the Russian Arctic. Black Carbon (BC) aerosol is a major climate forcer in the Arctic. Here, we present 15 years (2001–2015) of surface observations of the aerosol absorption coefficient babs (corresponding to Equivalent BC), obtained at the Zeppelin Observatory, Ny Ålesund, Svalbard, coupled with backward transport modeling with Flexpart in order to calculate the Potential Source Contribution Function (PSCF) for BC. The observed long‐term variability superimposed on a strong annual cycle is studied as a function of large‐scale circulation patterns represented by monthly index values for the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) and the Scandinavian pattern (SCAN). We find a 35% increase of babs values at Zeppelin during the SCAN− phase in the winter half‐year compared to the SCAN+ phase but no significant difference in babs values between the NAO index phases. Both NAO and SCAN induce significant regional variability on the areas of origin of babs, mainly Siberia, Europe, and North America. Plain Language Summary: Here, we investigate the effect of the most important large circulation patterns for the European Arctic, namely the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) and Scandinavian (SCAN) patterns on the light absorbing carbon aerosol reaching the highly important area experiencing the effects of climate change as found before. We report important first time findings for an extended observation record of 15 years of aerosol light absorbing carbon, which was never been employed before as a continuous long record, and we performed the first rigorous assessment of the impact of large atmospheric circulation patterns like NAO and SCAN on the transport of black carbon aerosol expressed as the climate relevant aerosol absorption coefficient (babs) for the first time. We find a significant 35% increase in babs at Zeppelin during one of the phases of the SCAN. However, a significant regional variability induced by both NAO and SCAN phases is revealed. These findings allow a better quantified estimate of the fate of emissions over the years in the Northern Hemisphere and a better assessment of their influence in the observed BC metrics in the Artic. Atmospheric transport of aerosols such as black carbon (BC) affects the absorption/scattering of solar radiation, precipitation, and snow/ice cover, especially in areas of low human activity such as the Arctic. The resolution dependency of simulated BC transport from Siberia to the Arctic, related to the well-developed low-pressure systems in September, was evaluated using the Nonhydrostatic Icosahedral Atmospheric Model-Spectral Radiation Transport Model for Aerosol Species (NICAM-SPRINTARS) with fine (~ 56 km) and coarse (~ 220 km) horizontal resolutions. These low-pressure systems have a large horizontal scale (~ 2000 km) with the well-developed central pressure located on the transport pathway from East Asia to the Arctic through Siberia. In recent years, the events analysis of the most developed low-pressure system indicated that the high-BC area in the Bering Sea observed by the Japanese research vessel Mirai on September 26 - 27, 2016, moved to the Arctic with a filamental structure from the low's center to the behind of the cold front and ahead of the warm front in relation to its ascending motion on September 27 - 28, 2016. The composite analysis for the developed low-pressure events in September from 2015 to 2018 indicated that the high-BC area was located eastward of the low's center in relation to the ascending motion over the low's center and northward/eastward area. Since the area of the maximum ascending motion has a small horizontal scale, this was not well simulated by the 220-km experiment. The study identified that the BC transport to the Arctic in September is enhanced by the well-developed low-pressure systems. The results of the transport model indicate that the material transport processes to the Arctic by the well-developed low-pressure systems are enhanced in the fine horizontal resolution (~ 56 km) models relative to the coarse horizontal resolution (~ 220 km) models. The circum-Arctic region experienced serious fires in 2019 and 2020. Biomass burning is considered a primary source of black carbon (BC) aerosols. BC contributes to Arctic warming and impacts snow/ice melting. However, the impacts of biomass burning on BC in the Arctic during these recent serious fires have not been quantified in detail. In this study, based on numerical simulations using the Weather Research and Forecasting model coupled with Chemistry (WRF-Chem), we calculated the contribution ratios of biomass burning to Arctic BC and revealed its transport pathways. Affected by biomass burning emissions, the near-surface BC concentrations over the terrestrial areas within the Arctic Circle were highest in summer, and declined in spring and autumn. Spatially, high-concentration levels of BC were distributed in the Russian central and eastern areas. Biomass burning accounted for 63.72% and 45.18% of the summer BC in the Arctic near-surface and middle troposphere, respectively. In the near-surface, the contributions from local Arctic sources were comparable to those from sources outside the Arctic Circle in summer. In the middle troposphere, contributions from sources outside the Arctic Circle were dominant. In summer, BC originating from biomass burning in Siberia was transported a short distance by southwesterly winds to the central Arctic near-surface, while the enhanced southwesterly winds in the middle troposphere transported BC from Siberia, Alaska and northern Canada to the central Arctic and Greenland. In spring and autumn, most BC originating from biomass burning in the near-surface of Eurasia was transported eastward by westerly winds and then transported northward over the North Pacific Ocean, and the long distance may have resulted in fewer effects on the Arctic. These results highlight the important role of biomass burning in the Arctic environment under a warming climate. Based on the multiyear measurements in the surface atmospheric layer (from five stations) and regular flights of aircraft laboratory over the background region of Southwestern Siberia, the compositions of mass concentrations of submicron aerosol and absorbing substances (soot and black carbon) are analyzed. The annual average concentrations of submicron aerosol and black carbon were found to be maximal in 1997, 2012, and 2016, when the largest numbers of wildfires occurred across the entire territory of Siberia. No significant, unidirectional trend of interannual variations in the concentration of submicron particles was observed, while the concentration of absorbing substance reliably decreased by 1.5% each year. To estimate the effect of urban pollutants, mass concentrations of aerosol and absorbing substance in the surface layer at the Aerosol Station (in the suburban region of Tomsk) were compared to those at the Fonovaya Observatory (in the background region). It was shown that the largest contribution of anthropogenic sources in the suburban region was observed in the winter season, while minimal difference was observed in the warm period of the year. The seasonal behavior of the concentrations of elemental carbon at three stations in Novosibirsk Oblast almost completely matched the dynamics of the variations in the black carbon concentration in the atmosphere of Tomsk Oblast. Data of aircraft sensing in the troposphere of the background region of Southwestern Siberia (2000–2018) were used to determine the average values of the vertical distribution of the submicron aerosol and black carbon concentrations in the altitude range of 0.5–7 km for each season. It was found that at altitudes of 0.5–7 km, there were no unidirectional trends in submicron aerosol; however, there was an increase of black carbon concentration at all altitudes with a positive trend of 5.3 ± 2.2% per year at an altitude of 1.5 km, significant at a p-value = 0.05. Black carbon (BC) is one of the light-absorbing particles that reduce the albedo of snow surfaces. Snow samples were taken from the surface of three glaciers in the Alaska Range in mid-April 2017. The BC size distribution and concentration were analyzed with a laser-induced incandescence (LII) method. The BC concentration of the snow samples was 1–6 μg L−1 and 0.5–3.1 μg L−1 at a depth of 0–2 cm (surface) and 2–10 cm (subsurface), respectively. These values are comparable to other Arctic areas and are considered to be the Alaskan background level. The BC concentrations are 0.5% of those of insoluble solid particles (ISPs) measured using an electrical sensing zone method. The surface albedo change due to BC and other ISPs concentrations was estimated to be 0.004–0.007 for the snow surface in April. The ablation at the observation sites on Gulkana Glacier would be 1.2% larger in the ablation season due to black carbon deposition. The chemical transport model revealed that 17%–34% of BC originates from biomass burning in Asia and Siberia, and 60% of BC originates from China in this study. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The abnormally high temperature and the deficit of precipitation in Siberia in summer 2016 contributed to the development of massive forest fires, which resulted in pyrogenic emission in the atmosphere of various biomass burning products. This paper presents the analysis results of the spatial and temporal variations of black carbon (BC) in the atmosphere over Northern Eurasia during the 2016 Siberian wildfires using the MERRA-2 reanalysis data. The spatiotemporal evolution of BC anomalies is presented, with estimates of the increase in BC mass during wildfire period. The peculiarities of large-scale atmospheric circulation responsible for BC transport from Siberia to Central Europe are discussed. The estimates of spatial scale, effective height and speed of the long-range anomalous (from east to west) transfer of air masses in the atmosphere over Northern Eurasia in July 2016 are obtained. Changes in the optical and microphysical characteristics of biomass-burning aerosol during its long-range transport are also discussed. In low human activity area such as Arctic and ocean, even a small inflow of aerosols originated in anthropogenic and forest fire emissions can be an influence on radiation, cloud, and precipitation via direct and indirect effects of aerosol. Hence it is important to understand the aerosol transport to the low human activity area. The large and continuous forest fire emission occurred around Lake Baikal of Siberia in September 2016. The maximum surface concentration of black carbon (BC) was observed by Arctic cruise of R/V Mirai (MR16-06) in 25–26 September around Aleutian Islands. We successfully reproduce the maximum of carbon concentration in 25–26 September around Aleutian Islands with the aerosol transport simulation of the Nonhydrostatic Icosahedral Atmospheric Model (NICAM) – SPRINTARS with horizontal resolution of 56 km. These results imply the long-range transport of BC from Lake Baikal to Aleutian Islands, however, the aerosol transport simulation possibly involves in uncertainties related to the injection levels of emission, emission dataset, and horizontal resolution of the model. Thus, the sensitivity of emission should be addressed to validate the uncertainty ranges of the aerosol transport impact on the low human activity area. To estimate the BC emission impact, we performed the sensitivity simulations of the NICAM-SPRINTARS using the multiple schemes of emission, the multiple emission dataset (GFAS, GFED, and FINN), and the multiple horizontal resolutions (220 km and 56 km). One noticeable impact of emission scheme change was achieved by replacing the model's injection height of forest fire events by the observational injection height, and the BC concentration in remote area is relatively large with the emission scheme of constant injection height (about 3 km).
