This article focuses on the role of Shelton, Connecticut-based Pitney Bowes, a well-known manufacturer of mailing equipment and document handling machines, in an approach of cladding rapid prototyping parts with a thin layer of metal. Pitney Bowes has been using stereolithography (SL) machines to produce prototype parts, but found that SL prototypes lacked the strength and wear resistance to withstand the rigors of their newer test programs. INSET: Metallic Makeover.
