Informed by self-determination theory (SDT), this study explores older adults' long-term community volunteering experiences and motivations in Shanghai. We took a qualitative research approach to conduct face-to-face, semi-structured, in-depth interviews with older adults who were long-term volunteers in Shanghai communities (N = 69). We performed thematic analysis and generated themes for their experiences and evolving motivations. Participants began volunteering because it was enjoyable and helped them adapt to life after retirement. As their volunteering progressed, participants' motivations gradually evolved and they developed a fusion motivation––juewu, combining characteristics of intrinsic and extrinsic motivations––for their strong commitment to volunteering. Gradually, participants assimilated juewu into their volunteer identity, which encouraged them to lead community self-governance initiatives. Background: Brain Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) examination of cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD) may help screen vascular cognitive impairment. A recently estimated CSVD score system was suggested to capture the overall CSVD burden. The study aimed to detect the association between systemic evaluation score of cerebral vascular imaging parameters with cognitive functions.Methods: This was a cross-sectional study in community settings. From October 2017 to September 2018, elder (≧60) residents were recruited through on-site visit in 6 communities from Shanghai, China. The participants underwent brain MRI, carotid ultrasound, laboratory tests of blood and urine samples. Cognitive function was evaluated using Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE). MRI score of CSVD was calculated according to the 2012 standard for the evaluation of statistical changes in imaging.Results: Total 171 subjects completed survey and examinations. There were 55 participants diagnosed with cognitive impairment, with a total percentage of 32.2%. Participants with and without cognitive impairment showed significant differences in age, BMI and education level. Cognitive impaired participant had more disease history/comorbidity of hypertension and chronic renal insufficiency, higher level of creatinine, as well as lower level of full blood count (FBC) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT). A significant difference was detected in CSVD score between participants with and without cognitive impairment. Results of linear regression analysis showed significant negative correlations between MMSE score and both left and right carotid artery peak systolic velocity (PSV), however the CSVD score was only borderline (P = 0.0566) positively correlated with MMSE. Multivariate linear correlation analysis including all collected risk factor data showed that left carotid artery PSV score was among the independent negative correlated factors of MMSE. Multivariate binary logistic analysis showed that age, education and history of hypertension were the only statistically associated factors of cognitive impairment.Conclusions: The current study identified high prevalence of cognitive impairment in a Chinese community. In addition, correlations between cerebral vascular disease imaging status and cognitive functions were confirmed although the sample size limited the possibility of screening cognitive impairment with imaging technique. Background: Screening for cognitive impairment (CI) is often hampered by lack of consensus as to which screening instrument to use. The aim is to assess the consistence and applicability of different CI screening tools.Method: In a cross-sectional study from October 2017 to September 2018 in 7 communities in Shanghai, China, elder (≧60) residential volunteers with no history of major cardiovascular diseases, cancers and other comorbidities known to affect cognitive functions were recruited. The participants underwent tests with 7 cognitive function screening instruments. Multivariate linear regressions were performed to test correlations between demographic characteristics, including gender, age, education, and marital status, with cognitive test scores. Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) score adjusted according to the correlation coefficients was used to detect CI with a cutoff of 24. Other cognitive function scores were compared between participants with and without CI. In addition, Pearson's correlation test was used to detect association between different test scores.Results: 172 participants with relatively low education levels were included. Age and education showed significant association with cognitive test scores. Using adjusted MMSE, 39.6% of participants were identified with CI, while the percentage was 87.2% when adjusted Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) with cutoff of 26 was used. Analysis of "abnormal" test scores showed that MMSE had the highest percentage of valid data (98.8%). MoCA and Isaacs test of Verbal Fluency (VF) score had correlation with most the other scores, while MMSE only significantly associated with VF and MoCA.Conclusions: MMSE may still present the most applicable tools for quick screen of cognitive functions, especially when environmental conditions may interfere with participants' attention. This study explores elderly volunteers' identity during their experiences volunteering in the community in Shanghai. Purposive and snowball sampling strategies were used to recruit elderly volunteers to participate in semi-structured, in-depth interviews (N = 40). Participants developed new identities during volunteering. Through volunteering, they also continued to sustain their professional identities and Chinese Communist Party identities. Volunteering had both positive and negative implications for participants' identities. Our findings suggest that volunteering strengthened participants' role identity and social identity to better adapt to life after retirement. Volunteering also helped participants achieve identity continuity. This study offers nuanced sociocultural context to current elderly volunteering research and informs tailored policy and practice development in urban China. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: This study aimed to compare the bone mineral density (BMD) of older women living in rural and urban areas, and evaluate the potential factors affecting the risk of osteoporosis.Methods: We recruited 574 women aged 65 years or older from rural areas and 496 from urban areas in Shanghai, China. The BMD values of the lumbar vertebrae and total left hip were measured by a dual energy X-ray absorptiometry densitometer. We also recorded information about education level, family income, medications, reproductive and menstrual history, diet, smoking, and alcohol consumption.Results: Women in urban areas had significantly higher BMD in their lumbar spine, and there was a dramatic increase in the proportion of women with osteoporosis in rural areas. The age at menarche was significantly higher among women living in rural areas, and there were more years from menarche to menopause among urban women. Rural women had significantly higher numbers of both pregnancies and parity, and a significantly lower age at first parity. In multiple linear regression analyses, years from menarche to menopause was independently related to high lumbar spine BMD, while age at menarche and parity was independently related to low lumbar spine BMD.Conclusion: More older women in rural areas had osteoporosis. Later menarche, less years from menarche to menopause and higher parity might partially contribute to decreased BMD among women in rural areas. China's tradition of taking care of one's aging parents continues to evolve, as evidenced by the growth in nursing home residents in Shanghai. However, how these families make the decision to institutionalize remains unclear. To fill this gap, this study draws on power relations to examine communication dynamics when oldest-old and their adult children decide to institutionalize. This study used a phenomenological approach. Twelve dyads of matched elderly residents and their children participated in face-to-face, in-depth interviews ( N = 24). The format and content of intergenerational communication indicated that both conflicts and compromises took place. Adult children achieved greater decision-making power than their frail parents, which evoked older adults' ambivalent feelings. A discrepancy in perceived filial piety between generations also emerged. These dynamics of caregiving decision-making offer insight in understanding evolving filial piety in urban China. The purpose of this study is to investigate the role of children's support in elders' decisions to live in a yanglaoyuan (residential long-term care) in Shanghai based on their intentions and actual experiences, drawing on both quantitative and qualitative data. The 2005 Shanghai Elderly Citizen Longitudinal Tracking Study (SECLTS) examines a stratified sample of community-dwelling elders and their intention to live in a yanglaoyuan ( N = 1,512). Eleven semi-structured, retrospective interviews described how children participated in residents' decision-making to live in a yanglaoyuan. Logistic regression analyses reveal that satisfaction with children's support-financial, instrumental, and emotional-is negatively associated with respondents' intention to live in a yanglaoyuan. Higher levels of respondents' satisfaction with their children's support are associated with lower levels of intention to live in a yanglaoyuan. Such support, however, does not necessarily determine elders' decision to live in a yanglaoyuan. Qualitative analyses suggest that children participated throughout residents' actual process of deciding to live in a yanglaoyuan. Children helped residents to make the decision to live in a yanglaoyuan. Residents reported how their children contributed to instrumental support to face family caregiving challenges and how they experienced and shared the emotional process in the decision-making. Quantitative and qualitative findings complement each other to provide a holistic understanding of the role of children's support in elders' intention to live in a yanglaoyuan, as well as in their actual decision-making experiences. Abstract: Manipulation of LIBOR events has sounded the alarm to our how to regulate the development the SHIBOR. The financial products linked to SHIBOR have e merged in recent years, bank of SHIBOR quoting may based on self- interest, there may be an intrinsic motivation for higher or lower quoting SHIBOR. Based on analysis of financial products linked to seven-days-SHIBOR and three-months-SHIBOR between 2010 and 2011, and do a hypothesis testing that are there some manipulations of SHIBOR. The testing result showed that during the date of sales financial products, the higher quoting SHIBOR behavior may be existing, in order to raise people's expectations of yield of financial products, but lower quoting SHIBOR behavior may not be existing at the date of calculating interest of financial products. Perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a group of synthetic chemicals that are widely used in industrial and consumer products. A growing body of literature suggests that exposure to these chemicals are associated with adverse reproductive outcomes in women. However, the sources of PFAS exposure are often poorly characterized in women of child-bearing age. To examine the association of plasma PFAS concentrations with dietary intake and drinking water sources in reproductive aged women in Shanghai, one of the high PFAS polluted regions in China. Concentrations of ten PFAS in plasma samples were measured in 933 women. Information on dietary intake and type of drinking water was collected by questionnaire. We used multivariable linear regression models to assess the association of PFAS concentrations with dietary intake and drinking water. After controlling for potential confounders, a higher frequency of intake of aquatic products (freshwater fish, marine fish, shellfish, shrimp and crab) was positively and significantly associated with concentrations of PFOS, PFOA, PFNA, PFDA, PFUA and PFDoA in 900 reproductive aged women. Intake of freshwater fish showed the strongest association with PFAS. Compared with the lowest intake group of freshwater fish, the intermediate intake group had 8–32% increase in the concentrations of these pollutants; and the highest group had 11–57% increase. Conversely, intake of soy products was associated with lower levels of PFDA, PFUA, PFNA, PFOS, and PFDoA. In addition, compared with women drinking tap water, drinking bottled water was associated with significantly decreases in PFHpA, PFDA, PFOA, PFUA and PFBS blood levels by 9–13% in 905 reproductive aged women. Intake of freshwater fish, marine fish, shrimp and crab was positively associated with plasma PFAS concentrations, while intake of soy products and bottled water was associated with lower PFAS concentrations in the Chinese women of reproductive age. • The study was conducted in one of the high PFAS contaminated areas in China. • Consumption of aquatic products was positively associated with plasma PFAS levels. • Consumption of soy products was associated with lower PFAS levels. • Drinking bottled water was associated with lower PFAS levels.
