William Porter's all-Bach recital fully exploited these features in a perfect symbiosis of musician and instrument. The concert of the afternoon was a clever nod to Seattle's coffee history and culture: Bach's Coffee Cantata was paired with a newly commissioned Cantata Caffeinata by John Muehleisen, with libretto by Charles "Tony" Silvestri. Resident director Zach Hemenway led his exceptional 40-plus-voice choir in music by Leighton, Mathias, and Howells; guest organist Käthe Wright Kaufman bookended the service with stellar performances of other Howells and Leighton scores, showcasing the church's versatile 46-rank Noack, installed in 1997. Especially beautiful were the choral works by Seattle composer and St. James choir member Jessica French. [Extracted from the article]
