The cataloguing of the Shearer and Annand Collection at the National Monuments Record of Scotland has focussed attention on James Shearer as an architect. His role as a town planner has yet to receive similar posthumous recognition. Through an evaluation of his major planning achievement, the Dunfermline Advisory Town Plan of 1946, this paper aims to explore Shearer's planning theories, the attention they received, and their effect on the future of Dunfermline.
