Pain, being a subjective phenomenon, is perceived in different manner by individuals based on various factors including age and gender. Various scales are available in literature to assess and record the pain perceived by an individual. Comparison of commonly used pain perception scales among Saudi Arabian population is scarce. A cross-sectional observational study was conducted among 180 subjects who were belonging to 2 age groups namely 7 to 16 years (group 1; n = 90) and 51 to 60 years (group II; n = 90). Subjects with dental pain of pulpal origin were included by employing consecutive sampling. The included participants were asked to record the severity of pain using visual analogue scale (VAS) and Wong Baker facial pain rating scale (WBS) in a computer-generated random order. The data obtained was subjected to statistical analysis. t test was used to compare the pain score recorded using VAS and WBS among males and females. The correlation between VAS and WBS was also assessed. P value < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. All subjects who participated responded to both the pain perception scales. No difference was found between males and females in the pain perception recorded using VAS and WBS in both the groups. A strong positive correlation was found between VAS and WBS score which was found to be statistically significant in both the groups. Both VAS and WBS are reliable tool to record pain perception in both age groups. Objective: This study aimed to assist governments and organizers of mass gathering events in reviewing existing preventive measures for disease outbreaks to inform the adoption of enhanced strategies for risk reduction and impacts on public health., Design: A cross-sectional, quantitative, descriptive study., Setting: This study was conducted in a mass gathering of Hajj, an annual religious event in Mecca, Saudi Arabia., Participants: A convenience sample of 70 personnel working in government ministries of Saudi Arabia (Ministry of Health, Ministry of Hajj, and Ministry of Interior) and the Saudi Red Crescent Authority involved in health management in Hajj, including policy formulation and implementation., Main Outcome Measures: Perception and knowledge of health risks and outbreaks associated with Hajj., Results: The majority of the respondents (60 percent) expressed concern about the potential for infection transmission during Hajj. The respondents also reported having or knowing a colleague, a friend, or a family member with a history of infection during or after Hajj. However, the respondents' knowledge of the possible modes of infection of various diseases was limited., Conclusions: Hajj is associated with various risks of outbreaks, and thus, better protection-enhancing measures are required. Training personnel involved in health management, including planners, coordinators, and healthcare providers, can help reduce the risks and prevent potential outbreaks.

Background: The global incidence of fungal infection has increased dramatically over the last two decades. Fungal diseases threaten both immunocompetent, and immunocompromised patients. The current fungal diagnostics status in Saudi Arabia needs to be evaluated, especially with the increase of the immunosuppressed population. This cross-sectional study investigated the gaps in mycological diagnosis on a national level., Materials and Methods: The call interview questionnaire responses were collected to evaluate the demand for fungal assays, diagnostic methods' quality, and mycological expertise of laboratory technologists in both public and private medical intuitions. The data were analyzed using (IBM SPSS ® software version 22.0)., Results: A total of 57 hospitals from all Saudi regions participated in the questionnaire; however, only 32% received or processed mycological samples. Most participants were from the Mecca region (25%), Riyadh region (19%), and Eastern region (14%). The top fungal isolates identified were Candida spp., Aspergillus spp., and dermatophyte. Fungal investigation is highly requested by intensive care, dermatology, and obstetrics and gynecology units. Most laboratories rely on fungal culture and microscopic examination, which mostly identify Candida to the genus level, and use 37°C incubators for culture (67%). Antifungal susceptibility testing (AST) and serological and molecular methods are rarely performed and mostly outsourced. Using accurate identification and AST are the primary factors to improve fungal diagnosis in respect to turnaround time and cost. The three major obstacles identified were availability of facility (47%), reagents and kits (32%), and good training (21%)., Conclusions: The results indicated that fungal diagnosis demand was relatively higher in high-population regions. Background: Infection with SARS-CoV-2 may perturb normal microbiota, leading to secondary infections that can complicate the viral disease. The aim of this study was to probe the alteration of nasopharyngeal (NP) microbiota in the context of SARS-CoV-2 infection and obesity and to identify other respiratory pathogens among COVID-19 cases that may affect patients' health., Methods: A total of 107 NP swabs, including 22 from control subjects and 85 from COVID-19 patients, were processed for 6S amplicon sequencing. The respiratory pathogens causing secondary infections were identified by RT-PCR assay, using a kit that contained specific primers and probes combinations to amplify 33 known respiratory pathogens., Results: No significant (p > 0.05) difference was observed in the alpha and beta diversity analysis, but specific taxa differed significantly between the control and COVID-19 patient groups. Genera of Sphingomonas, Kurthia, Microbacterium, Methylobacterium, Brevibacillus, Bacillus, Acinetobacter, Lactococcus, and Haemophilus was significantly abundant (p < 0.05) in COVID-19 patients compared with a healthy control group. Staphylococcus was found in relatively high abundance (35.7 %) in the COVID-19 patient groups, mainly those treated with antibiotics. A relatively high percentage of Streptococcus was detected in COVID-19 patient groups with obesity or other comorbidities. Respiratory pathogens, including Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, Moraxella catarrhalis, and Salmonella species, along with Pneumocystis jirovecii fungal species were detected by RT-PCR mainly in the COVID-19 patients. Klebsiella pneumoniae was commonly found in most of the samples from the control and COVID-19 patients. Four COVID-19 patients had viral coinfections with human adenovirus, human rhinovirus, enterovirus, and human parainfluenza virus 1., Conclusions: Overall, no substantial difference was observed in the predominant NP bacterial community, but specific taxa were significantly changed between the healthy control and COVID-19 patients. Phenylthiocarbamide (PTC) is a bitter compound that is similar in taste to the polyphenols present in most vegetables and fruits. The human taste response towards this compound influences dietary preference, which has a bearing on an individual's body mass index (BMI). Another factor that influences taste perception is fungiform papillae count. This, in turn, is governed by genetic factors or deleterious habits such as smoking. Establishing a link between all the above factors could lead to a wider understanding of obesity, which is a global health issue. PTC taste response, BMI, and fungiform papillae were recorded and statistically analyzed between two groups-smokers and nonsmokers. There was no statistically significant difference between smokers and nonsmokers with regard to PTC tasting ability. However, there was a significant inverse relationship between BMI and PTC tasting ability and fungiform papillae count both in smokers and nonsmokers. Thus, it can be inferred that as BMI increases, there is a lower likelihood of experiencing the bitter taste of PTC. Additionally, the ability to taste PTC decreases with diminishing numbers of fungiform papillae. Smoking does not affect bitter PTC tasting ability despite negatively affecting fungiform papillae count.

In 2000, the Saudi government established a committee for health reform to develop an information technology strategic plan for healthcare and for deploying e-health applications within the country. The objective of e-health systems was to provide better healthcare to patients and to increase the efficiency of healthcare organizations. Despite numerous e-health interventions to provide healthcare services, very little is studied about the adoption process of e-health from users' viewpoints in Saudi Arabia. Materials and Methods: This study has combined the Technology Acceptance Model and Theory of Planned Behavior frameworks to evaluate the factors influencing the patient acceptance of e-health services in Saudi Arabia. Data were collected from patients at various private and public hospitals in Saudi Arabia. The partial least square technique based on structural equation modeling was applied to analyze the survey data. Results: The study shows the significant influence of perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use on the attitude. Furthermore, attitude and subjective norm ( p  < 0.05) significantly influence patient behavioral intention (BI) to use e-health services. However, perceived behavioral control ( p  > 0.05) had no significant influence on patient BI to use e-health services. The findings of this study might be useful to policymakers, the government, and healthcare service providers in Saudi Arabia and other developing countries.Conclusions: The findings of this study might be useful to policymakers, the government, and healthcare service providers in Saudi Arabia and other developing countries.

Background: Screening for medical conditions (MCs) of public health importance is a first step in disease prevention and control. Prior studies in the United States found oral health care providers (OHCPS) embrace screening for increased risk of medical conditions in the dental setting. Our objectives were to assess Saudi Arabian (SA) dentist's attitudes, willingness and perceived barriers towards implementing screening for MCs into their dental practices., Methods: A self-administered, 5-point Likert Scale (1 = very important/willing to 5 = very unimportant/unwilling) questionnaire was given to a convenience sample of 190 practicing dentists. Friedman nonparametric analysis of variance was used to compare responses within each question., Results: Of the 143 responding dentists the mean age was 31 years; 102 (71%) were men. The majority felt it was important for a dentist to screen for cardiovascular disease (98.6%), hypertension (97.9%), diabetes (97.9%), human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) (97.9%), and hepatitis C virus (98.6%). Respondents were willing to refer a patient to a physician (97.9%); send samples to an outside laboratory (96.1%); conduct screening that yields immediate results (96.2%); and discuss results immediately with the patient (93.7%). Respondents were willing to measure/collect blood pressure (67.2%); weight and height (63.7%); and finger stick blood (54.6%). The whole responding dentists (100%) reported time as an important barrier. Respondents were significantly more willing to refer a patient for consultation than send samples to an outside laboratory (mean ranks: 2.32, 2.81, P < 0.001); significantly more willing to measure blood pressure than take oral fluids for salivary diagnostics (mean ranks 2.22, 2.75, p = 0.003). Insurance was significantly (P < 0.05) less important barrier than time, cost, patients' willingness or liability (mean ranks 3.56, 2.63, 3.00, 2.79, 3.02, respectively)., Conclusions: The majority of dentists in this study reported positive attitudes towards and willingness to perform medical screenings in their practice. Time was an important factor.

This study aims to explore the association between functional health literacy and awareness for, beliefs, and attitudes of patients with colorectal cancer (CRC) and CRC screening test in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. A total of 256 participants from two different tertiary level hospitals in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia were recruited in this study. The participants were interviewed by a trained researcher between October and December 2015. All respondents answered a three-part questionnaire which included demographic data, questions related to CRC awareness, attitude, behaviour, and short Test of Functional Health Literacy in Adults (STOFHLA). More than half of the participants had an inadequate awareness of functional health literacy skills (FHLS), 16.4 % had marginal of FHLS awareness and 17.6 % had adequate awareness about FHLS as assessed by the STOFHLA. Overall, the majority of the participants in both marginal and adequate aware groups showed a limited awareness about colorectal cancer screening and testing. A significant association was found on awareness of the patients about frequencies that they should have been tested for colorectal cancer and functional health literacy. No significant association was found between functional health literacy as assessed by STOFHLA and concerns of Faecal Occult Blood Test (FOBT) (p = 0.384) and sigmoidoscopy or colonoscopy might cause embarrassment (p = 0.089), harm (p = 0.917), and pain (p = 0.849). The present study revealed a low level of health literacy among Saudi adults in Riyadh region. Although the level of literacy was low, the bigger concern is that of the poor awareness and beliefs of Saudi adults about CRC and CRC screening.
