The results and interpretations of published Canadian field studies on the reproductive status of fish in waters receiving pulp and paper mill effluent discharges were reviewed. Most of the information was obtained from indicator measurements such as gonad size, fecundity, and serum steroid levels in wild fish sampled at reference and effluent-exposed sites. Difficulties in selecting appropriate sampling sites, natural variability, and the ecological relevance of the indicator measurements were identified as major complicating factors for the interpretation of the field data. Consequently, it was not possible to conclude to what extent, if any, widespread effects on fish reproduction are being caused by pulp and paper mill effluents or that specific manufacturing processes are causing such effects. Further research on the normal variability and predictive capability of reproductive indicators, for example, using an integrated approach (i.e., laboratory testing, mesocosm studies, and field work), is recommended. Journal writing is one of many strategies that can help promote learning in a process-oriented curriculum. This article explores the experience of implementing journal writing as an expectation of second-year baccalaureate nursing students in a clinical practicum. Faculty had a vital role in facilitating this experience. The journals provided a medium within which students explored in depth significant events that occurred in their practicum. Their analysis of these events included application of theoretical frameworks and concepts that supported and strengthened the arguments made in the journals. Students responded very favorably to their experiences in journal writing. In the evaluation of this experience, students reported increased abilities in critical thinking and self-directed learning. These two important concepts complement each other in the students' learning processes.

The immunotoxic potential of bleached kraft pulp mill effluent (BKME) to cell-mediated immunity in mink (Mustela vison) was investigated October 1993 through May 1994. For 26 weeks, 20 mink were fed a diet based upon fish caught within 6 km downstream of a bleached kraft mill in Saskatchewan, Canada. Water for this group contained 25% softwood-run BKME. Twenty control mink were fed nutritionally matched diets based upon fish from lakes receiving no municipal or industrial effluent and tap water. Using in vitro and in vivo immunotoxicity assays, the proliferative response of mink peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) to mitogens was optimal, at 72 hr with 10 micrograms/ml Concanavalin A, 1/80 dilution pokeweed mitogen, and 1/80 dilution phytohemagglutinin. Bacterial cell wall Escherichia coli lipopolysaccharide did not stimulate mitosis of the mink PBMC. No difference (P < 0.05) in PBMC proliferation was seen between the control and BKME-exposed mink with any of the mitogens used. Delayed type hypersensitivity (DTH), a cell mediated response, was assessed in mink vaccinated with live bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG) and then challenged by intradermal toe web injection with 200 micrograms of sonicated BCG approximately 6 weeks later. The DTH response in the BKME-exposed mink was impaired based upon assessment using skin thickness measurements, histopathological assessment and image analyzer technology. This decreased response is evidence for suboptimal immune function associated with BKME exposure, which could affect the competitive fitness of piscivorous mammals naturally exposed to BKME.

The Canadian province of Saskatchewan, and particularly rural Saskatchewan, has an ageing population and has experienced a great deal of out-migration in recent years. As a result, its labour force has been shrinking over time (Moazzami, 2015). International migration has been viewed as one way to reverse negative population growth and boost the economy of the region. Several programs and initiatives have been developed to successfully attract and welcome international migrants to Saskatchewan's rural areas. Despite this, retention is poor, with many immigrants choosing to move on to other destinations. In this paper, I argue that effectively welcoming immigrants in a context where they are seen primarily as economic actors poses a number of political, discursive and practical challenges. The economic rationale for immigration tends to reduce, somewhat ironically, the welcome that is extended. This paper is based on an analysis of information generated through interviews with key informants, all of whom are individuals engaged in the work of welcoming immigrants in different parts of rural Saskatchewan. Maintaining legitimacy is a crucial objective for public officials to ensure effectiveness. Without legitimacy, political costs rise as the trust in government decreases and policy implementation is delayed; thus, officials handling resource development are encouraged to improve the acceptability of their processes. Therefore, it is essential for the government to understand the values and expectations of the citizens affected by resource development. Such an understanding assists the government in accomplishing its goals. This paper examines two cases, Norrbotten, Sweden, and Saskatchewan, Canada, both of which have established mining operations and similar regulatory frameworks and, during the commodities boom, experienced increased foreign investment and applications for new mines. While most mining projects in Saskatchewan faced little public opposition, some Norrbotten mines met contestation and protest. This paper utilizes survey data that focus on the perspectives of the residents close to the proposed mining operations, as well as interview data from public officials responsible for mine permitting, to examine the relationship between stakeholder influence and trust in government on the acceptability of mining. Permafrost-affected ecosystems of the Arctic–boreal zone in northwestern North America are undergoing profound transformation due to rapid climate change. NASA's Arctic Boreal Vulnerability Experiment (ABoVE) is investigating characteristics that make these ecosystems vulnerable or resilient to this change. ABoVE employs airborne synthetic aperture radar (SAR) as a powerful tool to characterize tundra, taiga, peatlands, and fens. Here, we present an annotated guide to the L-band and P-band airborne SAR data acquired during the 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2022 ABoVE airborne campaigns. We summarize the ∼80 SAR flight lines and how they fit into the ABoVE experimental design (Miller et al., 2023; https://doi.org/10.3334/ORNLDAAC/2150). The Supplement provides hyperlinks to extensive maps, tables, and every flight plan as well as individual flight lines. We illustrate the interdisciplinary nature of airborne SAR data with examples of preliminary results from ABoVE studies including boreal forest canopy structure from TomoSAR data over Delta Junction, AK, and the Boreal Ecosystem Research and Monitoring Sites (BERMS) area in northern Saskatchewan and active layer thickness and soil moisture data product validation. Pope Francis's dream for a synodal Church has implications for Catholic schools globally, but what exactly are these consequences? This paper explores Francis's vision in the context of Canadian Catholic schools in Alberta, Saskatchewan, and the Northwest Territories (NWT), where these schools are fully-funded by the government and enroll nearly a quarter million students. Ten exploratory interviews with chief superintendents from these schools—which formed the basis of a larger study—were analyzed to understand potential connections to Francis's vision and his four commitments to synodality: focusing on relationships, a culture of encounter, the essentials of the Christian faith, and local decision-making. The pope differentiates synodality from democratic forms of leadership and demands a communal form of listening and discerning God's Spirit. While the superintendents' style of leadership appeared to mirror synodality in many ways, predominant issues remain to be explored: an emphasis on relationships upends the status quo and gives new directions for the schools; encountering others will inevitably demand prophetic leadership by the system leaders; leading with the essentials of faith will not please everyone in Catholic schooling; and shared authority among the superintendents, bishops, and trustees requires further dialogue. The Internet of Things (IoT) technology has recently experienced popularity and growth in every facet of life, and it has been applied to every industry in recent years. The healthcare system has not been left out of the equation, where various services are considered toward improved healthcare and patient delivery. It is important to emphasize that related literature on the applications of IoT in healthcare explored various services on an individual basis without considering the consolidated services as we have introduced. Here, the consolidation of those services proffers improved healthcare delivery, which impacts and collaborates in an IoT-based healthcare environment. In this paper, we have utilized the newly formed Saskatchewan Health Authority comprising of various healthcare regions as our case study. In essence, we have proposed a Smart Saskatchewan Healthcare System based on IoT technology in the context of four services, namely: business analytics and cloud services, cancer care services, emergency services, and operational services. Further, the paper highlights the design implementation of a smart healthcare system for the province of Saskatchewan for enhanced electronic medical record initiative and also to augment and support the existing healthcare delivery options to ensure the quality of life of patients by integrating IoT technology and other pertinent technologies in the contexts of those services. It also features IoT-based network mapping, designs, methodologies, frameworks, architectures, platforms, and applications for the IoT based solution for all connected things (network resources and sites) towards efficient healthcare delivery. We have combined all these services to foster faster and more efficient healthcare delivery. We have also alluded that the stream of patient health data generated by the IoT smart/connected devices will be helpful in decision making and gaining insights. The operational challenges and security concerns pertinent to the design of the smart healthcare system are discussed. Lake Diefenbaker Irrigation Canals in Canada are crucial in providing water for irrigation, preventing droughts and floods, and supporting the Saskatchewan agriculture industry and economy. Unfortunately, filamentous algal blooms occur every summer in Lake Diefenbaker Irrigation Canals. These algae are not toxic but a nuisance. They block farmers' pumps and reduce irrigation water flow rates. Currently, the Water Security Agency periodically adds the algaecide Magnacide H. to control the algal blooms, which is costly (i.e., one million dollars per year for the Lake Diefenbaker M1 Irrigation Canal only) and requires effort to dewater the canal to protect fish. Therefore, algae removal before the canal water enters farmer's pumps might be a cost-effective alternative, especially the removal of microalgae during the initial stages of growth in June of each year. This paper has summarized and evaluated algae removal technologies, considering their advantages, disadvantages, and potential solutions for addressing the challenges and limitations associated with these technologies. Five algae removal technologies were identified as promising, which are suspended air flotation (SAF), dissolved air flotation (DAF), hydrodynamic cavitation, spiral blade centrifuge, and coagulation. Among them, SAF seems the most suitable option, while DAF and hydrodynamic cavitation offer eco-friendly advantages. Further research and pilot testing are needed to determine the costeffective and feasible algae removal technology for Lake Diefenbaker Irrigation Canals. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

North Dakota is a significant producer of wind energy in the United States. In the first decades of this century, the state went from almost zero production to over 25% of its electricity sourced from wind energy. Across the border in Canada, the province of Saskatchewan—which has the same wind capacity as North Dakota—did not develop wind energy during this same time period. This paper looks at print news media coverage of renewable energy, especially wind energy, in the two jurisdictions between 2009–2018. The main finding is that news media coverage of renewable energy is similar despite the very different wind energy portfolios. This suggests a possible disjoint between the media and public discourse on renewable energy politics. Regardless of the size of the renewable energy sector, the media reports very little on it. Overall, the study concludes that more robust discussions around the environment-energy nexus would be beneficial as the jurisdictions continue to grow their energy portfolios and potentially transition toward more renewable energies. Two years ago, the Alberta government put in place a temporary oil-production quota. However, the quota's impact could well be felt in the province's oil production for years to come. The quota applied only to firms producing more than 10,000 barrels of oil per day and was instituted as a response to pipeline constraints that caused Alberta oil prices to be much lower than prices elsewhere. Production from both oilsands mines and oil wells dropped as soon as the government announced the quotas. The media warned that the quotas would force production to transfer to Saskatchewan, but the research for this paper found that this never occurred. The quota policy was announced in December 2018 and a week later, the price of Alberta oil had jumped from $29.09/bbl to $50.08 bbl, a 72 per cent rise. When the quota policy actually took effect the first of January 2019, the price increased again, but by much less. The anticipation of the quota alone was enough to create the desired price increase. The quota, which set limits for the total combined crude oil and bitumen permitted to be produced, was assigned to individual operators and designed to provide an 8.5 per cent reduction in oil production. The total quota was fixed at 3.56 million barrels a day in January 2019, but individual quotas could be traded across eligible operators, minimizing the overall costs of achieving the total goal. However, total production continued falling even when the quota was eventually relaxed; the market and a low world price created a scenario in which production fell below the amount permitted by the quota. All the oil companies reduced their production regardless of whether they fell within the quota's guidelines or not; however, the firms that were subject to the quota reduced their production more than the others. The quota was lifted in December 2020 when export capacity again became sufficient. While curtailing production had the desired result of raising Alberta oil prices and resolving the differential between local prices and the world benchmark, its ripple effects may well be felt in the longer term. This paper finds that fewer wells are being drilled and more wells are suspending production. Tradition dictates that when a well becomes inactive, it is rarely returned to a productive state. Those firms that resorted to low levels of drilling in order to meet the quota have created a situation that could affect Alberta oil production in the years ahead. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Although researchers have indicated how "environmental" factors can influence organizations and their "risk systems," few have examined the influence of globalization on risk systems. Drawing on Saskatchewan firefighters' responses to the 2013 Yarnell Hill Fire fatalities, this paper demonstrates the impact of globalization on risk perceptions in risk systems. Analysis of interview data shows how information, communication, and transportation technologies have influenced structural and symbolic risk system boundaries and consequently, risk perceptions. In a highly mass-mediated world, Saskatchewan firefighters received news of the Yarnell Hill Fire fatalities quickly. The news prompted them to consider themselves in the position of those who died. In trying to understand why the fatalities happened, Saskatchewan firefighters compared their own risk positions to those they associated with the dead. Regardless of the accuracy of their perceptions, they believed that their overall risk position was lower than that of their American counterparts. They thought, the difference in risk contributed to the fatalities. It seems the passage of time and the comparison of risk positions moderated firefighters' intense emotions related to the fatalities, providing firefighters some sense of security. This phenomenon might similarly occur for others in risk systems and could affect risk system performance across contexts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Cold regions provide water resources for half the global population yet face rapid change. Their hydrology is dominated by snow, ice and frozen soils, and climate warming is having profound effects. Hydrological models have a key role in predicting changing water resources but are challenged in cold regions. Ground‐based data to quantify meteorological forcing and constrain model parameterization are limited, while hydrological processes are complex, often controlled by phase change energetics. River flows are impacted by poorly quantified human activities. This paper discusses the scientific and technical challenges of the large‐scale modelling of cold region systems and reports recent modelling developments, focussing on MESH, the Canadian community hydrological land surface scheme. New cold region process representations include improved blowing snow transport and sublimation, lateral land‐surface flow, prairie pothole pond storage dynamics, frozen ground infiltration and thermodynamics, and improved glacier modelling. New algorithms to represent water management include multistage reservoir operation. Parameterization has been supported by field observations and remotely sensed data; new methods for parameter identification have been used to evaluate model uncertainty and support regionalization. Additionally, MESH has been linked to broader decision‐support frameworks, including river ice simulation and hydrological forecasting. The paper also reports various applications to the Saskatchewan and Mackenzie River basins in western Canada (0.4 and 1.8 million km2). These basins arise in glaciated mountain headwaters, are partly underlain by permafrost, and include remote and incompletely understood forested, wetland, agricultural and tundra ecoregions. These illustrate the current capabilities and limitations of cold region modelling, and the extraordinary challenges to prediction, including the need to overcoming biases in forcing data sets, which can have disproportionate effects on the simulated hydrology. We associate new data from icebear, a coherent scatter radar located in Saskatchewan, Canada, with scale‐dependent physics in the ionosphere. We subject the large‐scale icebear 3D echo patterns (treated as 2D point clouds) to a data analysis technique hitherto never applied to the ionosphere, a technique that is widely applied in cosmological red‐shift surveys to characterize the spatial clustering of galaxies. The technique results in a novel method to calculate the spatial power spectral density of the greater ionospheric irregularity field. We compare results from this method to in‐situ plasma density and magnetic field observations from the Swarm mission. We show that there is a remarkable similarity between echo clustering spectra in the E‐region and the field‐aligned current structuring spectrum observed in the F‐region: a clear and characteristic preferred scale (5 km) both in the E‐ and F‐region spectra. We discuss the possibility that this represents evidence of an energy injection into the ionospheric irregularity field via energetic particle precipitation, but offer alternative interpretations with wider connotations for the ionosphere‐magnetosphere system. These findings open new and promising avenues of research for the study of the location of ionospheric scatter echoes with 3D information. It constitutes a novel way to consider the pattern of ionospheric irregularities over wide fields of view when there is an abundance of radar echoes, which allows for the analysis of radar data as point clouds. Plain Language Summary: With the advent of precision radar data from the aurora containing detailed information about radar echo locations, we are in a position to apply statistical methods from cosmology to extract information about plasma turbulence in the ionosphere. This interdisciplinary paper presents some birds‐eye view discussions about the use of correlation functions in physics, showing how it can be used to understand physics on virtually all spatial scales in the observable universe. We present results pertinent to the ionosphere, shedding light on plasma turbulence and its relation to energetic particles in the aurora. Here, we use observations both from space, by the orbiting satellites in the European Space Agency's Swarm mission, and using an experimental auroral radar in Saskatchewan, Canada. The implementation of school reforms to advance reconciliation with Indigenous peoples provides an opportunity to explore what Canadians think is important in framing their identities and values. This paper draws on data from a survey of public perspectives on education for reconciliation activities in two Canadian provinces, Alberta and Saskatchewan. We consider the broader community context within which schools are located. By examining public perspectives, we are able to assess how curricular initiatives related to reconciliation are understood by community members, both as a priority in itself and in relation to other key curricular areas. Informed by critical race theory, our findings suggest that reconciliation is restricted to activities that do not involve extensive change to existing curricular and ideational frameworks. These perspectives exist alongside extensive opposition to reconciliation justified by claims that Indigenous experiences and perspectives are receiving undue attention relative to more pressing educational priorities. Our findings suggest that aims to transform dominant understandings about Canadian history and identity remain far from being fulfilled. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Workload prediction is essential in cloud data centers (CDCs) for establishing scalability and resource elasticity. However, the workload prediction accuracy in the cloud data center could be better due to noise, redundancy, and low performance for workload prediction. This paper designs a hierarchical tree-based deep convolutional neural network (T-CNN) model with sheep flock optimization (SFO) to enhance CDCs' power efficiency and workload prediction. The kernel method is used to preprocess historical information from the CDCs. Additionally, T-CNN model weight parameters are optimized using SFO. The suggested TCNN-SFO technology has successfully reduced excessive power consumption while correctly forecasting the incoming demand. Further, the proposed model is assessed using two benchmark datasets: Saskatchewan HTTP traces and NASA. The developed model is executed in a Java tool. Therefore, associated with existing methods, the developed technique has achieved higher accuracy of 20.75%, 19.06%, 29.09%, 23.8%, and 20.5%, as well as lower energy consumption of 20.84%, 18.03%, 28.64%, 30.72%, and 33.74% when validating the Saskatchewan HTTP traces dataset. This article focuses on the provenance of the Stanley Collection—a group of 69 items from reserves in the Touchwood Hills area of Saskatchewan. The items were collected by reserve farm instructor Edward Stanley and his wife Elizabeth at the turn of the century and then sold to the Saskatchewan Museum of Natural History in 1914. By analyzing historical documents, artifacts, and oral histories, this study shows that the Stanley Collection was acquired under a colonialist collecting model that was largely influenced by power relations and then became part of provincial identity building in the early 1900s. Such insight contributes to a growing body of literature on collecting in the Canadian Prairies and also seeks to address reconciliation efforts in Canada. As the first study of the Royal Saskatchewan Museum's founding ethnographic collection, this paper provides an intriguing look at early collecting practices and the formation of the first museum in the Prairie provinces. Systems thinking can shed light on important relationships and conditions that affect community engagement activities. While robust tools like the community capitals framework and the sustainable livelihoods approach provide valuable context for engagement projects, additional insights can stem from models that describe the ebb and flow of different types of capital. This paper uses a well-studied ecosystem model called adaptive renewal (AR) to contextualize heritage-related challenges and opportunities in four rural communities on the Canadian prairies. Based on a reflective case-study analysis, we applied the AR model to focus group and semistructured interview data collected as part of a Museums Association of Saskatchewan (MAS) project aimed at using local heritage assets to build sociocultural and environmental capacity and attract investment. The MAS project identified four themes that could be addressed through training and policy changes, including concerns about funding, limited human resources, a lack of public services, and a desire to preserve and build on memories. By mapping each community onto the AR model, we uncovered additional insights about community resilience and other heritage-related challenges and opportunities. The AR model is likely to be a valuable tool for planning or assessing community engagement projects because it reflects the dynamic nature of socioeconomic and cultural relationships that affect community dynamics and local well-being. This paper uses networks of action situations (NAS) together with actor network theory (ANT) to identify the decisions that were made in Saskatchewan regarding power production and explore what future choices are available in the context of climate change. A theoretical and methodological contribution to NAS literature is made with focus on interconnected human and non-human objects (carbon, hydro, and uranium) or 'actants' and the development of discourses supporting or opposing their development. Actants provide the nodes of focus, while discourses explain the development of actants and their links. Identification and explanation of the emergence and recession of actants on the Saskatchewan landscape are analyzed with diagnostics of telecoupled systems, polycentric governance, and flows of faction situations. Focus group and survey data are used to identify future pathways and imaginaries of power production and the actants of carbon, hydro and uranium. Actants of carbon (coal) and hydro are possibly kept alive with carbon capture and storage and import of hydro-electricity from the distant action situation in a neighboring province (if the necessary infrastructure is built). While actants of renewables are strongly emerging, uranium currently mined on the Saskatchewan landscape is receiving strong support by government due to the possibility of small modular reactors (SMRs). This expanded theoretical conception of NAS illustrates distant action situations impact on local narratives and decision-making and dynamics of polycentric governance that are neither top down nor collaborative. In this paper, I examine the place of the Canadian Football League's (CFL) Saskatchewan Roughriders in the Canadian province of Saskatchewan's political history. Drawing on Canadian political economy and affect theory, I argue that political despair has been a defining feature of the Saskatchewan experience, an affective dimension of the province's place in the Canadian political economy. During difficult times, the historically mediocre Roughriders have served as a convenient metaphor—the scrappy underdog. In more recent years, however, a more prosperous Saskatchewan and more successful Roughriders team has led to the emergence of the "Rider Nation," a political identity based on a rejection of this despair. This identity, I argue, has been successfully captured by Premier Brad Wall and his conservative Saskatchewan Party, who have worked to locate themselves as the leaders of the Rider Nation and harbingers of "better times." Ultimately, however, I argue that the Rider Nation is an exclusionary identity, centred solely on the experience of white settler Saskatchewanians while erasing those experiences of Indigenous peoples. River deltas formed by the uninterrupted flow of water carrying sediments and nutrients provide many benefits to humans, including natural resources (e.g., water, aquatic, and terrestrial species) and fertile land. However, the sustainability of river deltas is threatened by large hydraulic infrastructure (e.g., upstream dams), other human activities, and climate change. For example, the Saskatchewan River Delta in Northern Canada is threatened because dams upstream interrupt the sediment transport, resulting in declining sediment levels. The lack of sediment affects the ecology and environment of the delta. This paper will address how dam operation can be adapted to decrease erosion and maintain hydrological, ecological, and environmental outcomes from human activities in the Saskatchewan River Basin, especially the South Saskatchewan River and the river delta. The cross‐sectional data along the Saskatchewan River below the E.B. Campbell Dam were considered for unsteady flow simulations via HEC‐RAS. Insufficient sediment reaches the Saskatchewan River Delta, resulting in ecological changes. The purpose is to give decision‐makers or related stakeholders insight into developing strategies for reducing erosion, replenishing moisture, and restoring sediment in the Saskatchewan River Delta to minimize dam‐induced issues. Introduction: In community-based research projects, needs assessments are one of the first steps to identify community priorities. Access-related issues often pose significant barriers to participation in research and evaluation for rural and remote communities, particularly Indigenous communities, which also have a complex relationship with academia due to a history of exploitation. To bridge this gap, work with Indigenous communities requires consistent and meaningful engagement. The prominence of digital devices (i.e., smartphones) offers an unparalleled opportunity for ethical and equitable engagement between researchers and communities across jurisdictions, particularly in remote communities. Methods: This paper presents a framework to guide needs assessments which embed digital platforms in partnership with Indigenous communities. Guided by this framework, a qualitative needs assessment was conducted with a subarctic Métis community in Saskatchewan, Canada. This project is governed by an Advisory Council comprised of Knowledge Keepers, Elders, and youth in the community. An environmental scan of relevant programs, three key informant interviews, and two focus groups (n = 4 in each) were conducted to systematically identify community priorities. Results: Through discussions with the community, four priorities were identified: (1) the Coronavirus pandemic, (2) climate change impacts on the environment, (3) mental health and wellbeing, and (4) food security and sovereignty. Given the timing of the needs assessment, the community identified the Coronavirus pandemic as a key priority requiring digital initiatives. Conclusion: Recommendations for community-based needs assessments to conceptualize and implement digital infrastructure are put forward, with an emphasis on self-governance and data sovereignty. Collaboration among Indigenous Peoples and the Saskatchewan government in Canada has led to Indigenous K-12 education progress concerning First Nations and Métis peoples, the Indigenous populations whose traditional territories exist within Saskatchewan. Acknowledging such advancements, this paper is concerned with how white identified students continue to graduate with higher completion and achievement rates than Métis and First Nations students. Critical race theory (CRT) can assist with understanding how racialised statistics persist in spite of decades of government administered Indigenous education initiatives and mandates. Contributing to anti-racist informed Indigenous education scholarship, this study applies aspects of CRT scholar Cheryl Harris's whiteness as property theory to a qualitative critical race methodological analysis of 13 Métis teachers' K-12. stories of racism. When viewed from a CRT lens, the findings suggest Métis teachers' experiences with racism in K-12 schools can contribute to our understanding of how to ensure democratic and racially just practices. In recent years there has been growing interest in applied quality of life research and involving the community in the research process with the ultimate goal of improving the social and economic circumstances of people. Increasingly, community-university partnerships are seen as an effective vehicle to achieve this. The Community-University Institute for Social Research (CUISR) based in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada is a successful example of such as partnership. CUISR’s quality of life module has conducted extensive research in Saskatoon and has been active in engaging the community in developing strategies and setting priorities for action. This paper serves as a brief introduction to the Special Edition of Social Indicators Research. Participatory video research methods were applied to engage members from two flood-impacted Indigenous communities to tell their film stories. The process and product outcomes for three films were assessed by eight indicators of community participation in the filming process as well as by seven measures regarding the films outreach for social change. These fifteen indicators are not limited to First Nations or displacement but are broad general categories that can be easily applied to any film story and can be objectively checked by viewing the credits in the film for director, videographer, editor, narrator, etc., as well as YouTube views and publication dates. The indicators show that community members were able to engage in all the film-making process, except for hands-on editing, with the resulting film showing compelling visible evidence of their suffering due to the long displacement and flood. Digital stories from elders, youth and women over the seven years of displacement created awareness about the injustice of targeting their Indigenous communities with diverted flood waters and provoked social change. Each successive film documenting another few years of displacement will be continued into the future as they have requested we train youth to film the issues that arise as they resettle. These indicators signal that the process and product outcomes are better than that for journal paper writing and meet the benchmark for qualitative academic research and participatory action research. Substance use is a persisting health care crisis that has led to residents' addiction to diverse substances in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan. This public health issue affects not only those with a substance use disorder but also those within their circle of family and friends. This paper aims to outline the community engagement processes that we undertook to identify community priorities for addressing the substance use and addiction issues facing them. We began the community engagement using a patient-oriented research process, which led to the development of a grant application. Following the awarding of this grant application by the Saskatchewan Health Research Foundation and Saskatchewan Centre for Patient-Oriented Research, we conducted interviews with family members affected by addiction in the city. The study provided us with significant insight into the impacts of substance use disorders on family members. The importance of collaboration among people with lived experience, health care providers, and community partners helped us to identify our research questions. Community members also actively participated in the data collection, analysis, and presentation of the findings where priorities for the interventions were identified. The conversations we had because of the community's engagement and participation in the research process enhanced our understanding of the realities of caring for people with substance use disorders and the importance of family involvement throughout the process. This paper proposes two models for the Technician Routing and Scheduling Problem (TRSP), which are motivated by a telecom provider based in Saskatchewan, Canada. The proposed TRSP models are distinguished from existing models by their ability to address two key issues: overnight and lunch break scheduling. The models aim to scheduling a set of technicians with homogeneous skill levels and different working hours for the purpose of providing services with different service times and time windows to a diverse set of widely spread communities. As the large-sized experiments of this problem categorized into NP-hard problems, a metaheuristic-based technique, Invasive Weed Optimization, is developed to solve them. A comparative analysis is performed to choose the optimum TRSP model based on two factors which are distance of communities to the main depot and balanced service times during planning horizon. The performance of the models is evaluated through the real-world data obtained from the telecom provider. The results prove that the overnight TRSP model is capable of substantially decreasing travel costs and the number of technicians that are required to perform the same set of services. Significant challenges from changes in climate and land use face sustainable water use in the Canadian Prairies ecozone. The region has experienced significant warming since the mid-20th century, and continued warming of an additional 2 ∘ C by 2050 is expected. This paper aims to enhance understanding of climate controls on Prairie basin hydrology through numerical model experiments. It approaches this by developing a basin-classification-based virtual modelling framework for a portion of the Prairie region and applying the modelling framework to investigate the hydrological sensitivity of one Prairie basin class (High Elevation Grasslands) to changes in climate. High Elevation Grasslands dominate much of central and southern Alberta and parts of south-western Saskatchewan, with outliers in eastern Saskatchewan and western Manitoba. The experiments revealed that High Elevation Grassland snowpacks are highly sensitive to changes in climate but that this varies geographically. Spring maximum snow water equivalent in grasslands decreases 8 % ∘ C -1 of warming. Climate scenario simulations indicated that a 2 ∘ C increase in temperature requires at least an increase of 20 % in mean annual precipitation for there to be enough additional snowfall to compensate for enhanced melt losses. The sensitivity in runoff is less linear and varies substantially across the study domain: simulations using 6 ∘ C of warming, and a 30 % increase in mean annual precipitation yields simulated decreases in annual runoff of 40 % in climates of the western Prairie but 55 % increases in climates of eastern portions. These results can be used to identify those areas of the region that are most sensitive to climate change and highlight focus areas for monitoring and adaptation. The results also demonstrate how a basin classification-based virtual modelling framework can be applied to evaluate regional-scale impacts of climate change with relatively high spatial resolution in a robust, effective and efficient manner. This paper reviews the history of Bill 53, the Freedom of Informed Choice (Abortions) Act. A private member's bill introduced in the Saskatchewan Legislative Assembly in 1985, Bill 53 would have imposed additional consent requirements on women seeking abortions. After concerns about its constitutionality were raised, the Bill was referred to the Saskatchewan Court of Appeal, which found it fell outside provincial jurisdiction. This paper explores the connection between Bill 53 and its more well-known cousins, Morgentaler and Borowski, and examines judicial and political decision-making in the early Charter era. What kind of experience of territory is produced by walking pilgrimages? Do they generate experiences of place or space as with the definitions provided by Yi-Fu Tuan in Space and Place: The Perspective of Experience? This paper addresses these questions by considering Tuan's distinction between space and place and various attempts at deconstructing that binary opposition. It looks at three texts about walking that seem to turn space into place--Nan Shepherd's The Living Mountain, Thelma Poirier's Rock Creek, and Iain Sinclair's London Orbital: A Walk A round the M25--before considering the author's own failure to turn space into place during an improvised walking pilgrimage in southwestern Saskatchewan, Canada. Finally, the paper considers a more recent pilgrimage by the author on the Whithorn Way in Scotland. He concludes that walking pilgrimage actually generates a phenomenal experience of more abstract qualities, 'placeness' and 'spaceness,' which are interrelated and interpenetrated, folded together (in a Deleuzian sense), a conclusion that leaves the author ready to re-evaluate his improvised pilgrimage in Saskatchewan as well as the literary accounts he discusses. This paper engages narratives from Tess Lea's (2020) book 'Wild Policy' for how they help consider the messy or 'wild' nature of global policy interventions on sustainability, including in its latest formation as the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). We do so alongside data from research on education in the territory of Nunavut, as well as informed by our experiences as settler and Cree university researchers concerned with place and land-informed education policy. Engaging with a methodological framing of policy ecology, the article considers both policy artifacts and 'ambiences' or materialities, and their interrelations. We examine how a Saskatchewan university's draft SDG plan manifests aspects of pre-fabricated globally mobile 'wild policy', including in its gaps in land-informed Indigenous engagement. Instead, we suggest how more systemic and decolonizing approaches to land-informed education policy, as in development in Inuit-based higher education in Nunavut, can inform both future policy decision-making and policy research. Background: Telemedicine is a useful tool that connects patients to their care team remotely and improves access to medical care for rural residents. This study aimed to determine the telemedicine experience of both rural patients with cancer and their physicians, and to explore factors associated with a positive patient experience. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, cancer patients and physicians in Saskatchewan completed a paper-based survey composed of 32 items or an electronic survey of 18 items, respectively. Logistic regression analysis was performed to assess patient satisfaction in relation to various sociodemographic and cancer-related factors. Results: Overall, 25 physicians and 165 patients participated in the study. Among the physicians, 94% were confident in their telemedicine assessment, 58% agreed that telemedicine improved clinical efficiency, and 73% agreed that doctor–patient rapport was unimpaired with telemedicine. Of 165 patients, 61% had used telemedicine for the first time, 81% felt that their needs were met, 83% were satisfied with the quality of their care, and 88% had a positive experience. Overall, 83% patients vs. 45% physicians preferred telemedicine to a face-to-face clinic visit (p = 0.005). On univariate analysis, patients ≥ 65 years old had a greater positive telemedicine experience compared to patients < 65 years old (odds ratio 4.1 [1.2–13.8], p = 0.02). Conclusion: Both patients and physicians have a high rate of positive experiences with telemedicine. However, patients have a higher preference for telemedicine over face-to-face visits compared to physicians. This paper explores the social learning, and its drivers and outcomes, in Yorkton, Saskatchewan, Canada, following flooding events that occurred in 2010, 2014, and 2016. The data for this study came from 15 semi-structured interviews and 110 newspaper articles concerning the flood events and infrastructure upgrades. Research demonstrates that the flood experience and the interactions and communications between the City, Council, and the public have produced social learning. However, this learning has been single- and double-loop learning. While the data revealed no explicit barriers to social learning, the perception that the public cannot contribute to stormwater management issues may have inhibited the degree of social learning that was achieved. As a result of social learning, Yorkton is now more prepared to deal with future flood events, both in terms of prevention and emergency response. However, social learning is diminishing as a result of the passage of time and the false sense of safety that the infrastructure upgrades create. Diminishing social learning has policy implications for Yorkton as the city has not yet implemented all the proposed flood upgrades. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Research has historically exploited Indigenous communities, particularly in the medical and health sciences, due to the dominance of discriminatory colonial systems. In many regions across Canada and worldwide, historical and continued injustices have worsened health among Indigenous Peoples. Global health crises such as climate change are most adversely impacting Indigenous communities, as their strong connection to the land means that even subtle changes in the environment can disproportionately affect local food and health systems. As we explore strategies for climate change preparedness and adaptation, Indigenous Peoples have a wealth of Traditional Knowledge to tackle specific climate and related health issues. If combined with digital citizen science, data collection by citizens within a community could provide relevant and timely information about specific jurisdictions. Digital devices such as smartphones, which have widespread ownership, can enable equitable participation in citizen science projects to obtain big data for mitigating and managing climate change impacts. Informed by a Two-Eyed Seeing approach, a decolonized lens to digital citizen science can advance climate change adaptation and preparedness efforts.
