Information and knowledge are essential for the survival of companies and people's daily lives. Furthermore, software is a fundamental element to manage this information. Programming professionals use information and organizational knowledge to develop their projects and work as a team. Information and knowledge represent power, and their sharing includes bargains, behaviors studied by the Social Exchange Theory. Sharing information effectively involves more than passing it on, it involves interference aiming the receiver's appropriation of it, for work execution, by means of information mediating subjects. This paper objective is to verify how information and knowledge are shared among software professionals, inferring how principles of Social Exchange Theory interfere or not in their mediation, highlighting the influence of egocentric and altruistic motivators, or motivation aimed at the group. As methodological procedures, a descriptive case study was carried out with software professionals, students of a public higher education institution, in Garça city, São Paulo state, as well as their administrative personnel, using questionnaires, interviews and analysis of the institution website. As a result, it was found that there is evidence of mediation of information and knowledge among those surveyed, since altruistic and egocentric motivations are dialectically reconciled in this mediation/sharing. The results are attributed possibly to internalized values during higher education period, as well to a psychologically positive work environment. It is concluded that there are convergences between the Social Exchange Theory and the mediation of information, both in theoretical and practical aspects, showing the possibility of mediation besides traditional informational equipment: libraries, archives and museums. Our purpose in this paper is to study complete linear Weingarten space-like hypersurface immersed in locally symmetric Lorentz space obeying some curvature conditions. Our approach is based on the use of a Simons type formula related to an appropriated Cheng-Yau modified operator jointly with some generalized maximum principles, we obtain that such a space-like hypersurface must be either totally umbilical or isometric to an isoparametric hypersurface with two distinct principal curvatures, one of which is simple. This paper presents a study regarding the durability of concrete containing Recycled Coarse Aggregate (RCA) from the largest civil construction waste plant in Latin America, CTR Grajau, located in São Paulo, Brazil. Conventional reference concretes were produced with natural aggregates and water/cement ratios of 0.35, 0.45, and 0.55. The recycled concretes were produced by replacing the Natural Coarse Aggregate (NCA) of the reference concretes with RCA in percentages of 50% and 100% by volume. Specimens were submitted to tests to determine the apparent porosity, capillary absorption coefficient and compressive strength. To verify durability aspects, the diffusion coefficients of chlorides (obtained by a procedure adapted from ASTM C 1202:2017) and electrical resistivity (obtained using a Wenner probe) were determined. Results demonstrated that NCA substitution with RCA increased porosity, with a consequent increase in the capillary absorption coefficient and a reduction in compressive strength. Total replacement of NCA with RCA reduces the concrete service life, calculated using Fick's Second Law of Diffusion, by at least 40% for concretes with water/cement (w/c) ratio equal to 0.35, while a partial replacement (50%) reduces the service life by approximately 22%, considering a marine environment and 40 mm of cover thickness. The use of w/c minimum ratios, detailed RCA characterization and pre-wetting are some of the methods proposed for the application of the material for structural purposes. Studies have demonstrated the energy savings potential of mixed-mode ventilated office buildings. Yet, it is important to widen the knowledge about how those buildings have been designed and built in practice, and which design parameters have greater influence on its energy performance. The aim of this paper was to evaluate how building envelope design parameters influence the energy performance of cellular mixed-mode office buildings, in order to identify key design variables. The analysis presents a comparison among literature research studies and typical construction practices from a sample of buildings located in the city of Sao Paulo, Brazil. According to a base case model, established based on the real buildings sample, three sensitivity analysis techniques were performed to obtain relative parameter sensitivity to thermal loads: OFAT, Morris and Monte Carlo. Results showed the importance of the window opening effective area and the reduced impact of the window-to-wall ratio on the energy performance of mixed-mode office buildings. By applying a multivariate regression model, it showed significant in predicting 78.1% of the variance in annual thermal loads. The accurate determination of annual thermal loads into mixed-mode office buildings can be used to optimize the envelope characteristics based on a combination of input data and the building geometry. Enhanced silicate rock weathering for long-term carbon dioxide sequestration has considerable potential, but depends on the availability of suitable rocks coupled with proximity to suitable locations for field application. In this paper, we investigate the established mining industry that extracts basaltic rocks for construction from the Paraná Basin, Sao Paulo State, Brazil. Through a Life Cycle Assessment, we determine the balance of carbon dioxide emissions involved in the use of this material, the relative contribution of soil carbonation and enhanced weathering, and the potential carbon dioxide removal of Sao Paulo agricultural land through enhanced weathering of basalt rock. Our results show that enhanced weathering and carbonation respectively emit around 75 and 135 kg carbon dioxide equivalent per tonne of carbon dioxide equivalent removed (considering a quarry to field distance of 65 km). We underline transportation as the principal process negatively affecting the practice and uncover a limiting road travel distance from the quarry to the field of 540 ± 65 km for carbonation and 990 ± 116 km for enhanced weathering, above which the emissions offset the potential capture. Regarding Sao Paulo State, the application of crushed basalt at 1 t/ha to all of the State's 12 million hectares of agricultural land could capture around 1.3 to 2.4 Mt carbon dioxide equivalent through carbonation and enhanced weathering, respectively. In this paper, we introduce a defective regression model for survival data modeling with a proportion of early failures or zero-adjusted. Our approach enables us to accommodate three types of units, that is, patients with 'zero' survival times (early failures) and those who are susceptible or not susceptible to the event of interest. Defective distributions are obtained from standard distributions by changing the domain of the parameters of the latter in such a way that their survival functions are limited to. We consider the Gompertz and inverse Gaussian defective distributions, which allow modeling of data containing a cure fraction. Parameter estimation is performed by maximum likelihood estimation, and Monte Carlo simulation studies are conducted to evaluate the performance of the proposed models. We illustrate the practical relevance of the proposed models on two real data sets. The first is from a study of occlusion of endoscopic stenting in patients with pancreatic cancer performed at A.C.Camargo Cancer Center, and the other is from a study on insulin use in pregnant women diagnosed with gestational diabetes performed at São Paulo University Medical School. This paper presents a study based on the collection of samples from the typographic repertoire used in the commercial almanacs printed by Typographia Imparcial de Marques & Irmão between 1857 and 1862. The main purpose of the research was a better understanding of São Paulo visual culture. This paper addresses the political cognitive dissention around the concept of "war" and, from the stand of view of "crime", analyzes the ethic reflection that forges and moves "warriors" in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. Four new species of the genus Heterospilus Haliday, 1836 are described from an area of Cerrado stricto sensu in São Paulo State, Brazil. The species described in this paper belong to groups with striated and granulate vertex, according to Marsh et al. (2013). This paper discusses the relationships between urban landscape, public spaces, and territorial management in one medium-sized city of São Paulo state. Three sets of approach are outlined: the establishment of parameters for the characterization of the medium-sized cities of São Paulo; the specific context of São Carlos, with biophysical characteristics conjugated with the socio-spatial dynamics of development and expansion; and the challenges and perspectives in the configuration and management of public spaces and urban landscapes. It is intended to reflect on articulations between the fields of landscape and urban planning and indicate applications to the studied context, with integrations between design, instruments, legislation and public policies. The study of climatic variables in large scales with surface meteorological stations is limited due to the low density of these stations in many regions, possible sources of errors related to missing data, and uncertainties about the calibration sensors. Global gridded data (GD) systems can minimize these problems. Thus, studies that validate GDs with "ground truth" are important for several applications such as climate change. The objective of this study was to compare long series of surface data with 10-day estimates of average air temperature (T) and precipitation (P) using data from the European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecast (ECMWF) and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) for important agricultural locations in the states of Minas Gerais and São Paulo in Brazil. Despite the different spatial resolutions between ECMWF and NASA, the purpose of this paper was to evaluate the two data sources as they are readily available. The GD performance was evaluated by linear regression analysis. Analyses were performed for each meteorological variable for entire years and separated by seasons. The estimates of T from both ECMWF and NASA systems were accurate with the minimum Willmott concordance index (d) and RMSEp of 0.86, 0.37 °C, respectively, and precision with R2 0.61. The estimates of P had a minimum R2, d, and RMSEp of 0.48, 0.79, 2.15 °C respectively. The decreasing orders of (R2) were autumn > winter > spring > summer for T and winter > autumn > spring > summer for P, varying from 0.93 to 0.61 for T and from 0.77 to 0.48 for P. Hosting sporting mega-events involve considerable investment in and significant engagement with local communities. This paper contributes to the burgeoning literature about sporting mega event's socio-geographical impacts on tourism, employment, urban regeneration, and socio-economic and cultural benefits. Within the context of 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, we assess, utilizing interview data from local communities, the impact of the construction of the 2014 World Cup's opening venue, 'Arena Corinthians' soccer stadium, in Itaquera, as well as other infrastructure developments more widely in the East Zone of São Paulo. The Short-eared Owl (Asio flammeus) is a species commonly reported in breeding activity in human-modified landscapes, such as rural and urban landscapes, although it is considered under some extinction threat. In order to provide more information about the breeding behaviors performed in these landscapes, we monitored two couples in Sao Paulo countryside (i.e., in Piracicaba and Americana municipalities, Brazil) throughout seven months (Feb-Aug/2015). We used ad libitum surveys (108 h of sampling effort in 44 days) and all behaviors that were observed composed an ethogram. We observed five general behaviors (hunting, maintenance, interaction, perching, eating) and 19 specific behaviors, including two poorly known behaviors among Brazilian birdwatchers, the "courtship" and the "nest signaling". Hunting-related behaviors were the most common during the surveys, accounting 75% of all records from both couples. We opportunely found two nests with up to three laid eggs, both designed on the ground and surrounded by tall undergrowth, and we discovered through our surveys that one fledging reached the juvenile-adult stage. In this paper, we call attention of two observed features in practical applications of the Generalized Autoregressive Moving Average (GARMA) model due to the structure of its linear predictor. One is the multicollinearity which may lead to a non-convergence of the maximum likelihood, using iteratively reweighted least squares, and the inflation of the estimator's variance. The second is that the inclusion of the same lagged observations into the autoregressive and moving average components confounds the interpretation of the parameters. A modified model, GAR-M, is presented to reduce the multicollinearity and to improve the interpretation of the parameters. The expectation and variance under stationarity conditions are presented for the identity and logarithm link function. In a general sense, simulation studies show that the maximum likelihood estimators based on the GARMA and GAR-M models are equivalent but the GAR-M estimators presented a little lower standard errors and some restrictions in the parametric space are imposed to guarantee the stationarity of the process. Also, a real data analysis illustrates the GAR-M fit for daily hospitalization rates of elderly people due to respiratory diseases from October 2012 to April 2015 in São Paulo city, Brazil. This paper presents partial results of a more comprehensive research on housing quality and the performance of social housing projects (EHIS) in the Metropolitan Region of Campinas (RMC). The overall goal is improving social housing production quality by valuing Brazilian advances in the regulatory context. More specifically, the goal was contributing to the consolidation of an EHIS knowledge base in Santa Barbara d'Oeste, SP in view of the Brazilian ABNT NBR 15575 Standard on Housing Performance. Documentary and bibliographic studies were conducted. After the completion of a comprehensive inventory and detailed characterization, case study projects were selected. The design projects were verified regarding compliance to a selection of NBR15575 requirements. Research allowed reflections on the importance of compliance to normative references in housing design phase. As a follow-up to the paper previously published by the authors detailing the hybrid finite element (HYBFEM) solution of the SP 3 equations, in this paper, besides a semi-analytical solver verification with an analysis on the applied source fitting polynomial order, three-dimensional VVER-440, and VVER-1000 benchmarks are reproduced with the continuous Galerkin (CGFEM) and HYBFEM SP 3 modules of the SPNDYN code. The effect of the applied axial nodalisation and radial element order on the calculation results is discussed. The HYBFEM solver extended with a discontinuity factor (DCF) calculation module based on Serpent 2 output parameters is verified on a two-dimensional VVER-1000 benchmark. The SPNDYN CGFEM and HYBFEM results show very good agreement. We also verify that by introducing DCFs in SP 3 calculations, the reference transport solution can be reproduced with high accuracy. Abstract The Small Punch (SP) test has shown in a number of applications that it can be successfully used for material ranking and material property estimation, especially where standard tests cannot be applied due to sampling location or the amount of material available. The most sought material properties are the ultimate tensile strength (R m) and proof strength (R p02) for the classical SP tests and the equivalent creep stress σ for the SPC creep testing. In the case of SP testing the force to stress conversion is classically done by correlating the R m to descriptive (test set-up dependent) variables such as measured maximum force divided by the product of displacement at the maximum and the disk thickness. Naturally, if the test set-up or the test samples are not according to the standardized dimensions or low material ductility imposes crack growth instead of plastic deformation, these formulations cannot be applied. In this paper the classical formulations are studied and modifications in the formulations and in the extraction of the best descriptive variables for estimating R m are proposed. The assessments are done on a range of materials using both standardized flat SP samples as well as curved (tube section) samples. It is claimed that the equivalent stress in both SP and SPC tests can robustly be estimated with the same type of equation, at least for ductile and semi-ductile ferritic/martensitic and austenitic steels. The same equations can further be applied on non-standard test samples and test set-ups using FEA determined conversion factors correcting for curvature. The tensile strengths of ductile P91 steel and 46% cold worked 15-15Ti cladding steel, with clearly reduced ductility, are successfully estimated in a broad temperature range. The determination of tensile strength by small punch testing of engineering steels in general and for nuclear claddings in specific has successfully been shown to give robust and accurate estimates. Background: Breast cancer is the most common female cancer in Brazil with an estimated 60 thousand new cases per year. Widespread use of mammography opportunistic screening has been observed in the last 20 years, including women under 50 years old. The present study aimed to analyse the trends in breast cancer stage distribution at diagnosis as a function of age in the study period.Methods: This paper examined temporal trends of stage distribution in women with breast cancer diagnosed between 2000 and 2015 in São Paulo state, Brazil. Data from the Hospital Cancer Registry of the region were utilized. Completeness was high. The sample was described according to age, stage and date of diagnosis using absolute frequency and proportions (%). For trends, the Cochran-Armitage test was used with a 5% level of significance (P-value< 0.05).Results: A total of 93,674 women were included in the analysis with a median age of 56 years old. One-third (34.4%) of the women were younger than 50 years old, and stage II was the most frequent stage (36.4%), even when analysed by age groups. Stage 0 corresponded to 7.7% (7247 women) of cases. In the study period, there was a significant trend towards an increase in Stages 0, I and IV (P < 0.01) and a trend towards a decrease in Stages IIA, IIB and IIIB (P < 0.001). Stage IIA was more prevalent until 2009, and stage I was more prevalent thereafter. The trends to increase the proportion of Stages 0 and I and to decrease the proportion of stages IIA, IIB and IIIB were significant in all age groups.Conclusions: Breast cancer cases are diagnosed mainly at early stages, and approximately one-third of cases are younger than 50 years old. Downstaging has been shown. Opportunistic screening may have supported these results. Further studies are needed to show whether these results will impact the prognosis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The study of spirituality as an essential health component has deepened and its contribution and influence on the quality of life (QoL) and health of people living in the outskirts of town is acknowledged. This paper analyzes the perception of dwellers reallocated to a housing complex in the urban/rural periphery of the city of São José dos Campos, concerning their QoL and the influence of spirituality, religion and personal beliefs (S/R/PB) on this perception. The quantitative research was grounded on the application of the WHOQOL-100 quality of life questionnaire, developed by the World Health Organization. It was carried out in the Caminhos da Montanha Housing Complex in São José dos Campos, SP, Brazil. The S/R/PB domain scored the highest amongst the six domains that comprise the questionnaire, reinforcing the importance of this factor as a contributing element for the maintenance of the health and well-being of people in condition of socio-spatial vulnerability. Abstract This paper discusses the question about the right to the city and the influences of the dispute for the city on urban mobility, using São Paulo, Brazil's largest city, as a study case. We present the concept of the human mobility transition, which relates to the idea of large shifts in human mobility dynamics that have affected the constitution and development of urban settlements, the structure of the urban form, and social networks. We then argue that the latest stage of this transition is heavily influenced by the fact that cities have become both the arena for and the object of the political struggle between unsustainable economic growth and sustainable human development. Health consequences of the dispute for the city in the context of urban mobility are discussed. Final section uses the case of São Paulo to illustrate these arguments, focusing on changes that occurred from the end of the 19th century onwards. Objectives: In this paper, we report the long-term outcomes of the endovascular treatment of femoropopliteal occlusive disease, focusing on the importance of calcification and runoff outflow on limb salvage and patency, and the factors associated with these outcomes at a single center. Methods: This retrospective cohort study included consecutive patients with femoropopliteal occlusive who underwent femoropopliteal angioplasty at the Division of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery, Hospital do Servidor Público Estadual, São Paulo, Brazil, between January 2015 and July 2017. Results: In total, 86 femoropopliteal occlusive angioplasties were performed in 86 patients, with an initial technical success rate of 95.34%. The mean ± standard deviation follow-up time was 880 ± 68.84 days. The analysis was performed at 720 days. Technical failure occurred in four patients, who were excluded from the analysis, leaving 82 patients and 82 femoropopliteal occlusive angioplasties. The estimated primary patency, secondary patency, limb salvage, and overall survival rates at 720 days were 60%, 96%, 90%, and 82.5%, respectively. In univariate and multivariate analyses, Cox regression showed worse primary patency rates in patients with one tibial vessel or isolated popliteal artery runoff (p = 0.005), calcification grade 4 (p = 0.019), calcification grade > 2 (p = 0.017), small vessel diameter < 4 mm (p = 0.03) or primary angioplasty without stenting (p = 0.021). A univariate analysis showed worse limb salvage in patients with one tibial vessel or isolated popliteal artery runoff (p = 0.039). Conclusions: In this study, the main factors associated with worse outcomes in the endovascular treatment of femoropopliteal occlusive in terms of loss of primary patency were one tibial vessel or isolated popliteal artery runoff, calcification grade 4, or calcification grade > 2, small vessel diameter < 4 mm, and no stents use. The Tatuí Formation, one of the Brazilian Paraná Basin geological units, is developed solely in the State of São Paulo, southeast Brazil. It is studied herein, through outcrops at the eastern border of the basin, which are siltstones and fine sandstones, interbedded with some coarse and conglomeratic sandstones. Published papers on its fossils are sparse, dealing with some groups but not involving the entire association. This paper deals with ichnofossils, arthropods (conchostracans, isopods, and indeterminate crustaceans), plants (pteridophytes and spermatophytes) and fish remains (scales and teeth of Actinopterygii and Sarcopterygii). Foraminifers and sponge spicules were reported in short communications without illustrations and from uncertain stratigraphic positions. The Tatuí Formation paleoenvironmental deposition evolved through three phases. The first contains only the euryhaline fossils in siltstone beds. The second phase is regressive, with continental fossils (conchostracans and plants) in massive or laminated siltstone beds and conglomerates. Coprolites are promising tools for the understanding of paleoecological and paleoenvironmental aspects. Through its chemical composition and analysis of micro- and macrostructures, it is possible to obtain information about the diet of ancient animals and insights into the climate and vegetation of paleoenvironments. Paleoparasitological analysis of these trace fossils help to understand the parasite-host relationship and how parasitic infections were processed in the past. The present study aims to identify helminths in coprolites of the Tremembé Formation (Oligocene of the Taubaté Basin, São Paulo). Furthermore, we included the descriptive association of the paleoparasitological data with the paleoenvironmental information present in the literature for this geological formation. Eggs were identified through linear morphometry and morphology. The paleoparasitological analysis revealed the presence of Nematode eggs of Ascaridina, Spirurina, and Trichocephalida, with a prevalence of 5% for each group. The complex life cycle of some nematodes would be made possible by the wide faunal diversity of birds, fish, and arthropods that inhabited the Tremembé paleolake. The low prevalence of helminths in the samples may be related to taphonomic processes. This study represents the first paleoparasitological analysis of avian coprolites from the Tremembé Formation. In the 1970s and 1980s, migratory flows of Portuguese and luso-Africans from old Portuguese African colonies towards to São Paulo were the result of the pressures of difficult and complex African and Portuguese politics. Three very different cultural experiences were in play: that of the portuguese colony, the african context, and the Brazilian character of the destination, Sao Paulo. This paper explores the migrant's complex displacement experiences, the insertion of the migrant into the new context and the conflicts of identity that this migratory process entailed. We concentrate on the recent past, which has not been extensively researched. We use a method we call "summarized life-histories", which seemed appropriate, as we didn't know what the immigrants would tell us. We present a number of specific cases to exemplify our analysis. Background and objective: Dengue fever is a disease in which individuals' spatial distribution and Aedes aegypti mosquitoes breeding places are important factors for the disease dynamics. Typically urban, dengue is a problem for least developed countries due to the ineffectiveness in controlling the vector and disorderly urbanization processes. The result is a composition of urban sanitation problems and areas with high demographic densities and intense flows of people. This paper explores the spatial distribution of vector breeding places to evaluate introducing a new dengue serotype to a population at equilibrium for a pre-existing serotype. The paper's objective is to analyze the spatial dynamics of dengue using variations of the basic reproduction number. Methods: A model based on probabilistic cellular automata is proposed to permitting the necessary flexibility to consider some spatial distributions of vector breeding places. Then, ordinary differential equations are used as a mean-field approach of the model, and the basic reproduction number (R 0) is derived considering the next-generation matrix method. A spatial approach for R 0 is also proposed, and the model is tested in a neighbourhood from the city of São Paulo, Brazil, to examine the potential risks of vector breeding cells distribution. Results: The results indicated that the more spread out these places, the higher are the values of R 0. When the model is applied to a neighbourhood in São Paulo, residential areas may boost the infections and must be under public vigilance to combat vector breeding sites. Conclusions: Considering the mean-field approximation of the cellular automata model by ordinary differential equations, the basic reproduction number derived returned an estimative of the disease dynamics in the population. However, the spatial basic reproduction number was more assertive in showing areas with a higher disease incidence. Cytomegalovirus infection is the most prevalent cause of congenital and acquired sensorineural hearing loss, and it can be classified as symptomatic or asymptomatic at birth, and symptomatic individuals have a higher risk of developing neurological sequelae (1). In Brazil, the screening for cytomegalovirus infection in pregnant women is not part of the prenatal routine, making the possible diagnosis of congenital cytomegalovirus difficult (2). Considering the importance of this topic in the field of public policies for women and children's health and the few studies in Brazil, it is necessary to develop other studies and reports associating congenital cytomegalovirus infection and sensorineural hearing loss. The purpose of this case report is to highlight the influence of congenital cytomegalovirus infection and its impact on sensorineural hearing loss, stressing the importance of early diagnosis and intervention, besides demonstrating how socioeconomic factors affect the scope of contamination and transmission. This paper consists of the description of a case report of congenital infection that occurred in a private hospital in the city of Sorocaba/SP, through the report of the mother and the results of tests performed. The case report highlights the difficulty in establishing early diagnosis of neonatal cytomegalovirus, which represents an obstacle to a better prognosis. It is worth stressing that early diagnosis and intervention are of paramount importance, through Universal Newborn Hearing Screening, as well as audiological follow-up and monitoring. In the past decades, when São Paulo became the national manufacturing centre, it has experienced great population growth. Since then, many housing problems have emerged. In addition, the difficulties that inner cities face in attracting jobs and maintaining economic activities are particularly challenging. Indeed, even if many cities have successfully regenerated their central areas, the so-called inner city problem is still very much alive in the case of São Paulo. As a result although the city centre has abundant urban infrastructure it still has plenty of vacant spaces, including residential buildings. One could say that São Paulo's city centre is characterised by a large number of empty spaces in an area that is simultaneously crowded with buildings and urban facilities. This paper intends to contribute to the empirical analysis of the determinants of vacancy rates, with a particular focus on historical city centres, using São Paulo Metropolitan Area as our case study. Our empirical analysis relies on district-level data for the years 2000 and 2010, and combines standard spatial econometric methods with hedonic modelling. Our results suggest that there are three main groups of determinants: individual buildings characteristics, mobility of households and neighbourhood quality. We find evidence that the historic central city is a distinctive submarket, needing special urban policies. The public policies programs for low-income housing in Brazil started in the 1930s. The most recent well-advertised program Minha Casa, Minha Vida (MCMV) by the Federal government has the goals to improve the quality of life of poor people, to reduce the housing deficit, and to foster the economy. The objective in this research is to evaluate socioeconomics impacts of low-income housing on regional economic system, highlighting housing public policies developed by the state and the federal government. Under an emerging low-income housing policy, the state of Sao Paulo created the so-called CDHU. The question raised by this paper is how important was the contribution of these programs to the economic growth in the state of São Paulo and in the rest of Brazilian economy in previous years? Thus, a specific interregional input-output model is estimated for two regions, state of São Paulo and rest of Brazil, with the usage of six different typologies of low income housing ranging from a single families housing to gated community housing. The impacts are measured in terms of GDP, tax collection, production, and employment in the State of São Paulo and in the rest of Brazil. The results show that the effect in the economy is different depending on the chosen housing typology investment; in other words, the estimated model provide tools to decide about the best housing type for promoting economic growth. The MCMV program and the CDHU's program affect the state economy system by expanding the demand for inputs for the construction of new buildings (direct effect); by expanding the demand in other sectors due to the feedback effect (indirect effect), and by expanding the income of families - it also increases the demand for goods and services in the economy (induced effect). New types of vehicles, such as electricity-powered and/or autonomous cars or buses, are under rapid development, but the time needed to turn the existing stock of traditional vehicles, such as privately-owned human-driven fossil fuelled passenger cars, will likely last several years during which mixed traffic is expected. Moreover, the likely effects of the introduction of such vehicles may not be necessarily positive. Thus, a careful analysis of their various impacts through well designed tools is needed. Main tools for transportation systems analysis are based on methods for travel demand assignment to a transportation network, commonly used to support transportation project assessment and evaluation. The original contribution of this paper is twofold. First, a modelling approach to multi vehicle type assignment is proposed, in this approach the user choice proportions among vehicle types available to users are the results of an explicit choice behaviour model instead of input data as in all existing papers on multi-vehicle assignment. This approach is applied for analysing assignment to transportation networks including Fixed-Point models for equilibrium assignment and Deterministic and Stochastic Process models for day-to-to dynamic assignment. Second, statistical methods are introduced to study the bifurcation of SP models, in order to account for the stochasticity of such models. In particular, the Hartigan's Dip statistic, which measure the degree of unimodality of a distribution, showed to be the most effective one in identifying bifurcation in SP models. Fixed-point stability and bifurcation analysis are carried out too, and some simple numerical examples are also discussed. Reported results show that innovative vehicles with less impact on congestion than traditional ones may not have a positive effect on equilibrium stability since negative effect of reducing route choice dispersion may be compensate the positive effects on congestion. Latin America is a highly urbanized region characterized by remarkable inequality levels, also reflected in an uneven distribution of opportunities, making socio-economic segregation quite visible. Since the individual possibility to travel and therefore access to urban opportunities strongly depends on socio-economic status and the distances to overcome, highly unequal patterns of mobility and accessibility emerge. The continuous expansion of Latin American cities originates specific mobility-related inequalities visible in periurban areas, which tend to lack some key urban opportunities and public transport services usually available in cities. Due to established and new patterns of territorial segregation, these areas may generate new forms of marginality in relation to mobility, posing challenges for public action and territorial governance. Our paper considers if and how periurban areas experience different forms of mobility-related inequalities in three Latin American metropolises in Brazil, Chile, and Colombia (São Paulo, Santiago, and Bogotá, respectively). We do so by examining the differences among urban core and periurban zones based on four elements: socio-demographic features, access to the public transport system, spatial continuity, and functional dependence. Our analysis shows that the three metropolitan regions have different structures: while Bogotá and Santiago appear to be more dependent on the urban core, São Paulo shows more autonomous and self-sufficient periurban zones. The analysis also highlights different forms of peripherality, defined by differentiated mobility patterns and modal choices that suggest that city-specific lines for public action might be needed. • A decomposition-based dynamic prediction hybrid model is proposed. • A novel serial-parallel dynamic echo state network (SP-ESN) has been developed. • Phase space reconstruction and CCOA are used in SP-ESN model. • The proposed hybrid model is verified using 14 comparison models. Multiple reservoirs have been widely used in nonlinear time series forecasting. The hybrid approach is recognized as the mainstream forecasting method in complex wind speed prediction systems. However, application research and error correction of the multiple reservoirs hybrid model in the wind energy domain are still insufficient. Therefore, a serial-parallel dynamic echo state network (SP-ESN) with dual dynamic characteristics is proposed firstly. Its serial structure can capture the short-term memory information of the sequence and dynamically select the length of the training set, while the parallel structure has the ability to automatically correct the prediction error of the serial structure. Then, a dynamic prediction model based on phase space reconstruction that includes the improved complete ensemble empirical mode decomposition with adaptive noise (ICEEMDAN) method, the SP-ESN and the chaotic coyote optimization algorithm (CCOA) is designed in this paper. After data preprocessing of the original sequence by ICEEMDAN, the generated decomposed subsequence is input into the SP-ESN model for prediction and the final forecasting value is obtained accordingly. The CCOA is used to optimize the developed SP-ESN model parameters. Five wind speed datasets from Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region and Qinghai Province of China are selected for experiments. Six point prediction evaluation metric, forecasting efficiency and Diebold-Mariano test are used to evaluate the performance of the proposed model in ultra-short term wind speed forecasting. The case study results show that the proposed hybrid model achieves satisfactory performance compared with 5 datasets and 14 models, with mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) of 0.8405%, 1.2207%, 0.5163% 0.9791% and 0.3826%, respectively. With the increase of Brazilian economic growth and, consequently, the level of construction activity, the generation of residues from this sector is an important problem to be solved. Alternatives to recycle these residues, often in the composition of new materials, and developing models and management tools have been studied in several papers presented to the technical means in order to mitigate the effects caused by the impact of construction on the environment. However, the absence of public policies that consider the generation, handling and disposal of these wastes as a real problem, are still the biggest obstacle in the adoption of sustainable practices. This paper presents the general aspects of the management of waste generated by construction operations and demolition works to reform the Palestra Italia Arena (Allianz Parque) in the city of São Paulo by means of activities of recycling and reuse of these materials on the construction site of the works. The management of the demolition wastes produced in the construction work allowed significant economic gains, reducing transportation costs and acquisition of natural raw materials. This paper looks at three different Brazilian cities: Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and Belo Horizonte to understand the different models of favela upgrade, the opportunities and the challenges that each model entails. The recent ‘left-turn’ on Latin American politics created several opportunities for architects to help improve the informal sector that comprises a significant portion of every major city in the continent. In Brazil, the Lula government invested billions in the infrastructure upgrade of the infamous favelas. This paper will argue that the two traditional contractual models, the construction bidding (by metrics and values) and the commission by ‘reputation’ (opaque political process of choice), are not sufficient. A third model based on popular participation was tested in the early 2000s but it was gradually marginalized as the country speeded up investment in preparation for the FIFA World Cup in 2014 and the Summer Olympics in 2016. An emergent strategy to target sustainability involves an understanding of the water-energy interconnections. It takes water to produce energy, and it takes energy to source, treat, and distribute water. Sanitation and energy distribution are the world's pre-eminent development challenges. They are a magnifier of poverty, ill-health and mortality, and gender inequality. The word 'nexus' means the understanding of these interdependencies, tensions, and trade-offs. This paper investigates water-energy interconnections through critical analysis. We applied a bottom-up approach to describe Sao Paulo state's river basins, in Southeast Brazil, from the household to the regional scale. Initially, water availability, energy consumption and wastewater treatment data are inferred using per capita data. The subsequent data analysis then considered the positive and negative linkages among the basins. Local and state levels of dependency are also assessed, considering environmental and socioeconomic impacts. The significance of this paper lies in understanding these interconnections and their interdependence within the local context and individuals' behaviour. The results allow a comprehensive analysis of the water-energy Nexus across Sao Paulo state. Smart card data (SCD) allow analyzing mobility at a fine level of detail, despite the remaining challenges such as identifying trip purpose. The use of the SCD may improve the understanding of transit users' travel patterns from precarious settlements areas, where the residents have historically limited access to opportunities and are usually underrepresented in surveys. In this paper, we explore smart card data mining to analyze the temporal and spatial patterns of the urban transit movements from residents of precarious settlements areas in São Paulo, Brazil, and compare the similarities and differences in travel behavior with middle/high-income-class residents. One of our concerns is to identify low-paid employment travel patterns from the low-income-class residents, that are also underrepresented in transportation planning modeling due to the lack of data. We employ the k-means clustering algorithm for the analysis, and the DBSCAN algorithm is used to infer passengers' residence locations. The results reveal that most of the low-income residents of precarious settlements begin their first trip before, between 5 and 7 AM, while the better-off group begins from 7 to 9 AM. At least two clusters formed by commuters from precarious settlement areas suggest an association of these residents with low-paid employment, with their activities placed in medium / high-income residential areas. Introduction and Aims: This paper describes how substance use features in the accounts of intimate partner violence (IPV) perpetrators in treatment in England and Brazil. The aim of the research was to better understand cross cultural constructions of IPV perpetration amongst men in treatment for substance use.Design and Methods: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 40 men in community substance use treatment in Sao Paolo, Brazil and London and the South East of England who had reported IPV perpetration in a questionnaire survey. A thematic, narrative analysis was carried out of men's explanations for IPV perpetration.Findings: Three types of narratives were distinguished: (i) disputes, centred on substance use, that escalate to IPV perpetration; (ii) IPV perpetration that is explained by uncharacteristic loss of control, as a result of intoxication; and (iii) IPV perpetration provoked by a perceived betrayal, in which substance use is incidental. In all types of accounts hegemonic principles of male and female roles and behaviour provided a context for and make IPV perpetration explicable.Discussion and Conclusions: Substance use and IPV are culturally constructed and contextually defined. This paper reports the occurrence of porcine demodicosis caused by the mite Demodex phylloides in hogs reared in a peri-urban family farm located in Francisco Morato, a municipality of the Metropolitan Region of São Paulo, capital city of the state of São Paulo, Brazil. In a parcel of forty Landrace – Large White cross hogs, approximately four months old, four animals presented severe skin lesions in the form of small nodules over their entire body, especially in the periocular region, snout, lower abdomen and flanks. Two hogs had to be euthanized for animal welfare reasons, which enabled post-mortem examination. Skin scrapings revealed eggs, larvae, nymphs and adults of D. phylloides . Purulent subcutaneous nodules with intense parasitic folliculitis and intense perifollicular inflammatory reaction were present. Enterobacteria and coagulase-positive Staphylococcus spp. were isolated from the skin pustules. Necropsy revealed milk spotted liver, enteritis and enlargement of mesenteric lymph nodes. Protozoa ( Eimeria spp. and Balantidium sp.), helminth eggs ( Ascaris suum , Trichuris suis and strongyles ) and Brachyspira spp. were found in faeces. Staphylococcus spp. and enterobacteria were isolated from internal organs. All remaining hogs were treated with ivermectin at a daily oral dose of 0.45 g/kg of feed, during seven days. Fifteen days after treatment, remission of symptoms was observed in the surviving animals with demodicosis; absence of mites was confirmed by skin scraping examinations. The hogs were reared under poor environmental, nutritional and sanitary conditions, resulting in multimorbidity and immunosuppression. Severe clinical porcine demodicosis was triggered when the animals were castrated. Family pig farmers had been suffering economic losses due to the stunted growth of the herd. In addition to that, the lesions found on the skin and in the internal organs would result in condemnation of meat and viscera for human consumption. As part of a Public Policies Project, farm facilities were renovated with governmental aid, while family farmers received training. Good management practices and biosecurity measures were introduced in the herd. Educative policies and financial support were important to guide family pig farmers towards better husbandry practices, allowing them to raise healthy hogs in compliance with market demands. The recently launched Brazilian “forest certificates” market is expected to reduce environmental compliance costs for landowners through an offset mechanism, after a long history of conservation laws based in command-and-control and strict rules. In this paper we assessed potential costs and evaluated the cost-effectiveness of the instrument when introducing to this market constraints that aim to address conservation objectives more specifically. Using the conservation planning software Marxan with Zones we simulated different scopes for the “forest certificates” market, and compared their cost-effectiveness with that of existing command-and-control (C&C), i.e. compliance to the Legal Reserve on own property, in the state of São Paulo. The simulations showed a clear potential of the constrained “forest certificates” market to improve conservation effectiveness and increase cost-effectiveness on allocation of Legal Reserves. Although the inclusion of an additional constraint of targeting the BIOTA Conservation Priority Areas doubled the cost (+95%) compared with a “free trade” scenario constrained only by biome, this option was still 50% less costly than the baseline scenario of compliance with Legal Reserve at the property. This paper investigates the performance of seven methods of retrieving the planetary boundary layer height (PBLH) from lidar measurements carried out in the Metropolitan Region of São Paulo (MRSP) during two MCITY - BRAZIL field campaigns of 2013. The performance is objectively assessed considering as reference the PBLH retrieved from rawinsonde carried out every 3 h during these campaigns. The role of clouds and aerosol load in the performance of the seven methods is analysed considering three case study scenarios representative of typical atmospheric conditions in the MRSP : (a) winter clean atmosphere, (b) summer low clouds and aerosol multilayers, (c) summer sea-breeze intrusion. Corroborating the case study results, the objective analysis indicated that most of the lidar methods retrieved PBLH closer to the top of the entrainment zone than the mixed layer, contradicting their definition. During daytime, the Wavelet Covariance Transform Method performs better than all the other six methods. The Inflexion Point Method performed better to estimate the Residual Layer height during night-time. In average, the diurnal evolution of the PBLH and its local rate of change based on lidar and rawinsonde measurements are in agreement. • Most analysed lidar methods estimate the Entrainment Zone height. • Sea-breeze can reduce the aerosol concentration in the Residual Layer. • The Wavelet Covariance Transform has the best result among the analysed methods. • Lidar methods require an adaptation to the local climate conditions. Abstract: There is a move towards large-scale planting of perennial bioenergy crops in many countries to help reduce Green House Gas emissions, whilst still meeting energy demand. However, the implications of such wholesale land use change have yet to be fully understood which raises some concerns over the strategy. This paper identifies, through literature review, that significant social, economic and environmental impacts might be expected from land use change in two different parts of the world, São Paulo, Brazil, where sugarcane is the predominant perennial biomass crop, and England where miscanthus and short rotation coppice are likely to predominate. In order to examine the extent to which these impacts can be addressed in decision-making, the paper develops a framework for testing the effectiveness of environmental assessment practice in these two regions, and applies it to both. The conclusion is that, whilst tools which can address sustainability impacts in decision-making exist, the legal framework in England precludes their application for the majority of land use change, and in Brazil there is incomplete consideration of social and economic impacts at the strategic level. The paper also wants to show if this new way to make sport journalism agrees with the techniques and the basic principles of the journalism. This paper presents the results of a research devoted to the censored words in stage plays. The studied plays belong to the Archive Miroel Silveira, a collection of censorship processes related to theatre in the State o São Paulo, Brazil, covering from 1925 to 1970. The Archive is object of a wide study project, sponsored by Fapesp, and includes the present research. We classifi ed the cuts and, by its frequency, we reached a quantitative overview, in relation to each censorship type. The comparative observation of frequency allowed us todraw conclusions about the censorship peculiarities and its mobilizations, according to the social or political context. It permitted, as well, to determine aspects of the censorship nature and its social meaning effect. The results of such investigation have been published last year. This paper proposes an analysis based on the ethnography in sex clubs and sex bars for men in the city of Sao Paulo, Brazil. The paper examines how the different markers that operate in such areas are being melted to produce desirable bodies and subjects. I locate these sites in the broader market for commercial sexual encounters among men in the city, exploring social conventions and practices that permeate the body, sexual practices and erotic choices. This is a starting point for inquiring the ways in which certain stereotypes of "masculinity" are provided with meaning and are embodied. I also propose a revision of the erotic choices and sexual practices, which challenges the idea of eroticism expressed by thinkers such as Georges Bataille. According to him, gender is fixed and crystallized, is linked to sexual dimorphism of sex/gender positions. The body "violated", passive and penetrated, is "feminine"- the opposite of the "masculine" ones, the "active", that penetrates. This design underlines the erotic within the heterosexual matrix, which prevents thinking beyond or outside the limits of its rules. Following post-structuralist thinking on gender and sexuality, as well as queer theory, I wonder if we could try to deconstruct the erotic in other terms, in order to interpret anthropologically the practices, discourses and talks discussed here as potentially transgressive. As the emergence of a global public sphere becomes a possibility, growing out of denser economic, political and communicative networks as well as demanded by increasingly complex international problems, questions arise about the capacity and willingness of various national publics to engage in the global debate. This paper shows the results of a news reception analysis with the public of the city of São Paulo, Brazil during the months of July–November 2006, when the Lebanon conflict was broadly covered by the Brazilian media. The paper identifies the modes of engagement with the news about the international conflict, the types of reasoning used by these publics in interpreting the news, and the types of debates and conversations they have or don’t have about the conflict. Special attention is given to the personal experience of learning about conflicts abroad and to the relationship between this experience and the construction of a new civic identity where participation in global affairs is an important element. The research shows that São Paulo residents are informed and care about international events, but to a large extent lack the resources and the spaces where they could reflect upon them. The practice of overbooking in air transportation is a result of a broader market strategy, known as Yield Management (Revenue Management), which aims at optimizing the total revenues of airlines. Given this complex environment for decision making, one has that the investment in improving demand forecast capabilities, and more specifically, in understanding the process of arrival of requests in Reservation Systems, is potentially competitive advantage enhancing and ultimately improves market performance. The present paper aims at developing an empirical model of the arrivals of requests in airlines' (and, more generally, service firms') Reservation Systems. By making use of a database consisting of actual information collected from an airline operating the Rio de Janeiro - São Paulo shuttle route, here we make use of parametric estimation of a model of reservation arrivals. The time series modeling implemented here can be regarded as within a theoretical framework for demand forecast. Main results are indicative of an autoregressive process of arrivals in which lagged variables along with differences have high predictive power of current arrival levels. This paper discusses the use of risk assessment (RA) for analyzing the environmental suitability of natural gas pipelines and highlights RA's linkages with environmental impact assessment. The paper contends that RA is an essential tool when assessing the suitability of gas pipelines, and that risks associated with such proposed activities should be used as fundamental criteria to determine route selection. By doing so, fatality risks related to pipeline failures can be reduced. The paper also contends that the risk acceptance criteria adopted by the State of São Paulo are overly permissive when compared to other criteria used around the world. Therefore, the State should consider revising and strengthening its risk acceptance criteria to be up-to-date with international standards. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article summarizes the conference papers presented at the ninth biennial conference of the International Association for the Study of Forced Migration (IASFM). The IASFM conference was held January 9-13, 2005 in São Paulo, Brazil and was hosted by the Pontifical Catholic University and the Latin American Parliament. The conference featured 168 papers, primarily of applied research, presented by 200 academics, policymakers, practitioners, and government representatives. This was the first time that IASFM met in Latin America; the conference was simultaneously translated in Spanish, Portuguese, and English. The conference focused on the number of cases and causes of forced migration as well as possible repatriation of migrants. Smuggling and human trafficking was also addressed.

Lamb production in Brazil has the state of São Paulo as its largest consumer market, but due to competition for area with other agricultural activities, sheep farming in São Paulo underwent an intensification of the production system to achieve better economic profitability. This intensification can compromise the sustainability of the system. There is no research concerning about emergy evaluation on lamb production systems applied in Brazil, so this is the first paper to discuss the sustainability of lamb production systems using this method. Therefore, this article proposes to discuss the importance of considering environmental aspects in the economic analysis of production systems, aiming at the sustainable development of the sector. This study assessed the economic and emergy performance of three different sheep farms in Brazil managed under different levels of technology: Intensive, Semi-intensive, and Feedlot. Results show that from an economic perspective, the Feedlot system is more attractive (9,800 US$/yr for net profit) than Intensive and Semi-intensive ones, while emergy synthesis show that Semi-intensive system (30% for renewability) should be prioritized. On the other hand, when emergy is analyzed from an economic perspective based on Emdollars (Em$, with an 'm'), the economic advantage regarding the production cost of Feedlot on the Semi-intensive system becomes less evident. The Intensive system obtained the worst performance for economic, and emergy indicators. More than contributing to the discussions about the importance in considering a systemic perspective when quantifying the economic performance of production systems, this study also (i) establishes the most sustainable sheep farm system that could be supported in Brazil, and (ii) make available new unit emergy values that would enrich the existing emergy databases. • The synthesis emergy together with the economic assessment are performed for three sheep production systems with different levels of technology. • Intensive systems (Intensive and Feedlot) are economically profitable, but generate greater pressure on the environment. • Semi-intensive systems present less pressure on the environment, but are not economically viable. From the following research question: "How is the social space in Heliópolis' favela organized?, this paper has the reflexive objective of thinking the space of the favela beyond its stereotypes as a space that should be treated as singular, heterogeneous, and not as a problem to be solved. Using grounded theory by ethnographic approach by field notes during 18-month participant observation, 13 semistructured interviews, 8 open interviews, 26 testimonials on the project "Memória de Heliópolis", and 2 WhatsApp groups, all empirical data were collected. By all these methods, it was possible to perform a deep immersion in the daily life of Heliópolis (the largest favela in São Paulo - Brazil, with 45 years of existence and more than 200,000 inhabitants living in one million square meters). The results showed how the favela is a social space that has been in transit since its beginning. The favela is a continuous urban process of construction, deconstruction, and reconstruction of itself and of the city. It is organized around its sociospatial deficiencies and around its potentialities. The favela can be called communities, neighborhoods, or cities. Therefore, by this study, it is possible to say that Heliópolis is a multipliCity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
