Throughout the long eruption history of the Santorini volcano, the Cape Riva/Y-2 and Minoan/Z-2 eruptions had a profound impact on the environment. The Minoan eruptions also had a significant impact on society. These two tephras, as well as the Y-2 tephra individually, have been recorded for the first time in a lacustrine area in western Anatolia. This study examines the geochemical properties of Y-2 (23 cm) and Z-2 tephra layers (19 cm; 14 cm pure and 5 cm mixed) from 18 m sediment cores in Lake Yayla (Denizli-Buldan). Additionally, high-resolution µXRF, fossil pollen, charcoal, and dating analyses were conducted on the cores to determine the chronologies and environmental effects of the tephra layers. Fossil pollen findings show consistent forest and steppe/grassland vegetation before and after the Z-2 tephra, with the forest impact lasting for 240 years after the eruption. Increased aquatic vegetation and changes in specific taxa (e.g. Pinus sp. and Amaranthaceae increased, while Quercus deciduous, Olea europaea, and cereals decreased) were observed following the Minoan eruption. Charcoal analysis indicates heightened fire activity post-Minoan eruption, while XRF data reveal no associated climatic change. At the same time, no correlation has been identified between the Cape Riva eruption and ecological changes (climate, vegetation, and fire activity). Contribution to dating the tephra was provided by radiocarbon dating from the lowest part of the tephra layer (17,684 ± 63 years BP). This study sheds light on the extensive impacts of the Y-2 and Z-2 tephra eruptions, focusing on their dating, geochemistry, environmental effects, tephra transport directions, and thicknesses. The Santorini vineyard is a unique and extreme vineyard on a global scale with economic, historical and wine value. It also constitutes the second largest activity after tourism although linked to it. The special soilclimatic conditions and the specificity of viticulture on the island make it uniquely distinct and therefore a field of interdisciplinary study and research at a local and global level. However, the aging of the vineyard, the reduction of its cultivation area, its non-optimal management and finally the looming effects of climate change form a set of factors that should be weighed and assessed by those involved in the sector. At the same time, the rapid changes taking place at the global level (e.g. technological innovations) create opportunities, but at the same time the context in which the brand name "Santorini" is undoubtedly part of becomes more competitive, while also entailing risks from unforeseen developments. Only with collective action and a strategic approach will it be possible to ensure a sustainable future for the vineyard of Santorini. The zeolitic rocks of Akrotiri, on Santorini Island (Aegean Sea, Greece), can be grouped according to the zeolite minerals present. The first group includes zeolitic rocks that contain only clinoptilolite, the second group contains clinoptilolite and mordenite and the third group contains only mordenite. Clinoptilolite accounts for up to 56 wt.% and mordenite for up to 69 wt.% of the rocks. All samples contain feldspars (8–36 wt.%), clay minerals (6–8 wt.%), quartz (3–6 wt.%), opal-CT (2 wt.%), amphibole (2–4 wt.%) and amorphous materials (4–7 wt.%). The studied samples were classified chemically as andesites or dacites. The ammonium-exchange capacity of the studied samples was 104–158 meq 100 g –1. According to Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) No. 651/2013, zeolitic rocks that contain ≥80 wt.% clinoptilolite, ≤20 wt.% clay minerals and are free of fibrous minerals and quartz can be used as feed additives in animal husbandry. Zeolites with fibrous habit (mordenite, erionite, secondarily roggianite and mazzite) and SiO 2 minerals such as quartz, cristobalite and tridymite can be dangerous to both humans and animals. The mineralogical study showed that, due to their low clinoptilolite content and the presence of both quartz and fibrous mordenite, the studied zeolitic rocks do not conform with European Regulation No. 651/2013. The essay "Chronology of the Seima-Turbino bronzes, early Shang Dynasty and Santorini eruption" by Stanislav Grigoriev deals with the chronology of the Seima-Turbino bronzes, the early Shang Dynasty, and the Santorini eruption. The study emphasizes the importance of the Seima-Turbino bronzes for the periodization and chronology in Eurasia. The authors have conducted detailed analyses of objects and identified various types, chemical and metallurgical groups, as well as alloy types. The Seima-Turbino tradition spread from southern Siberia to the west, possibly also from the Abashevo culture in the Volga region. The chronology of the Seima-Turbino bronzes remains uncertain, but they are dated to the 22nd to 20th centuries BC. The distribution of the Seima-Turbino bronzes allows them to be dated using European dendrochronology and historical chronologies of the eastern Mediterranean and China. The presence of active hydrothermal vent fields near residential areas and their possible link to volcanic activity poses a potential hazard to the environment, society, and the economy. By capitalizing on Autonomous Underwater Vehicle sampling methodologies and applying the Generalized Moments Method model for geological and physical processes in these environments, we shed light on the underlying dynamics shaping the physicochemical characteristics of the vents. In this study, we focus on the Northern Caldera of Santorini and, more specifically, on the recorded CTD data (Conductivity, Temperature, Depth). The data sets were collected in 2017 in Santorini using an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle during the GEOMAR POS510 mission. Our research shows that the active vent field within the caldera probably follows a multifractal behavior and exhibits a weak memory effect. Depth Profiles and Time Series show similar behavior among conductivity and temperature. The variance and moments of both parameters underline the existence of two different mechanisms governing the behavior of the vent field. Monoxia obesula, a species native to the U.S.A. and adventive in western Mediterranean, is recorded in Greece for the first time. In 2022, one female specimen was collected on Théra Island (Santorini Archipelago, Aegean Sea), becoming the easternmost Mediterranean record. Host plants are Amaranthaceae species, particularly Atriplex halimus occurring in saline habitats. The presence of Monoxia obesula in Greece is alarming because it spreads its occurrence towards the eastern Mediterranean and may therefore pose a significant danger for Atriplex halimus stands. The destructive tsunami on 22 December 2018 due to the flank collapse of the Anak Krakatau volcano was a bitter reminder of large tsunami risks and of the shortcomings of the existing tsunami warning systems for atypical sources (tsunamis generated by non-seismic and complex sources). In the Mediterranean, several tsunamis were generated by landslides associated with volcanic systems in the past.The volcanic unrest experienced in 2011–2012 on the Santorini volcanic island in the Southern Aegean Sea pointed out the need to identify and quantify tsunami hazard and risk due to possible flank instability which may be triggered as a result of volcanic unrest or nearby seismotectonic activities. Inspired from this need, in this study we examined three possible landslide scenarios in Santorini Island with tsunamigenic potential. The results show that the scenarios considered in our study are able to generate significant local tsunamis impacting Santorini and the nearby islands, as well as producing significant impact along the coasts of the Southern Aegean Sea. While maximum tsunami amplitudes/arrival time ranges are 1.2 m/30-90 min for locations in the Greek-Turkish coasts in the far field, they are in the order of ≈60 m/1-2 min for some locations at the Santorini Island. The extreme tsunami amplitudes and short arrival times for locations inside the Santorini Island is a major challenge in terms of tsunami hazard warning and mitigation. As an effort to address this challenge, a discussion on the requirements for local tsunami warning system addressing atypical sources in the context of multi-hazard disaster risk reduction is also provided. The South Aegean Volcanic Arc overlies a slowly subducting, cool slab of oceanic-to-transitional crust, and hosts the hazardous Christiana–Santorini–Kolumbo volcanic field. In order to investigate the primitive melts feeding the volcanic field, we present major and trace element analyses of 130 olivine-hosted melt inclusions from Santorini, integrated with previously published H2O and CO2 data. Following post-entrapment corrections, we identify four endmember primitive melt types preserved in Fo ≥ 80 olivines, ranging from low-K island-arc basalts with La/Yb ~ 1.5 and 1.5–3.0 wt% H2O to andesites with La/Yb ~ 6–10 and 3.0–3.5 wt% H2O. They are consistent with melting at 1.3 to 2.3 GPa and 1350–1440 °C of variably depleted peridotitic mantle fluxed by slab-derived melts and fluids. The chemical signatures of sediment melts dominate, while those of fluids derived from the ocean crust are low compared to global datasets. This is consistent with thick sediment accumulations observed in the Hellenic trench, and with low calculated fluid fluxes from the downgoing slab. The low H2O contents estimated for the primary melts (0.8–1.8 wt%) may imply a component of decompression melting beneath the arc. Coupled with a well-constrained chronostratigraphic context, the melt inclusion archive provides a time series of mantle-derived input into the silicic crustal magmatic system over the last 530 ka. Primitive melts with La/Yb ≤ 5 have been erupted encased in olivines over the last 530 ky, without any evident time variation. Melt inclusions with La/Yb > 5 have, on the other hand, been restricted to two periods: (1) prior to the onset of major explosive volcanism at ~ 360 ka, and (2) the products of the 3.6 ka Late-Bronze-Age eruption and the 22-to-3.6 ka inter-Plinian period immediately preceding it. The observations may be explained by time-varying differential extraction of melts from deep storage zones in the mantle or lower crust, related to lithospheric rifting and caldera collapse events. The late Bronze Age eruption of the Thera volcano was among the largest eruptions of the Holocene era. This catastrophic event might perish all organisms from the ancient Santorini and could seriously impact the sand fly fauna of the Aegean islands. To investigate these effects, the survival possibility of the sand fly fauna in the Santorini islands and the biogeographic investigation of the sand fly fauna of eleven Aegean islands were conducted. It was found that only the south and east slopes of the massifs of Thira could provide refuge for sand fly populations. The expression-based heat map of the Jaccard coefficient matrix data showed that the Santorini islands and their neighbouring Anafi, Folegandros had clearly different z -score patterns compared to the other islands. It could be a late sign of the devastating effect of the Minoan eruption and/or the consequence of the distance of these islands from the mainland. Neither the glacial seashore patterns nor the geographic-climatic conditions can explain the present sand fly fauna of the Aegean Archipelago. If the sand fly populations of ancient Santorini survived the Minoan cataclysm, it could indicate that the environmental tolerance and the resilience of the sand fly populations can be high, and local geological and geomorphological conditions can play a greater role in the survival of sand fly species than previously assumed. Geologic maps are foundational products for natural hazard assessments but developing them for submarine areas is challenging due to a lack of physical access to the study area. In response, submarine geomorphologic maps are used to provide geologic context and spatial information on landforms and related geo-hazards for risk management. These maps are generated from remotely sensed data, e.g. digital elevation models (DEMs), which introduce unique hurdles to submarine mapping. To address this issue, we produced a workflow for applying planetary geologic mapping methods to submarine data. Using this, we created an onshore-offshore geomorphologic map of the Christiana-Santorini-Kolumbo Volcanic Group, Greece. This product can be used to enhance hazard assessments on Santorini, which is a tourist hot-spot at high risk for volcanically- and seismically-induced hazards. We document and show a state-of-the-art methodology that could allow geoheritage sites (geosites) to become accessible to scientific and non-scientific audiences through immersive and non-immersive virtual reality applications. This is achieved through a dedicated WebGIS platform, particularly handy in communicating geoscience during the COVID-19 era. For this application, we selected nine volcanic outcrops in Santorini, Greece. The latter are mainly associated with several geological processes (e.g., dyking, explosive, and effusive eruptions). In particular, they have been associated with the famous Late Bronze Age (LBA) eruption, which made them ideal for geoheritage popularization objectives since they combine scientific and educational purposes with geotourism applications. Initially, we transformed these stunning volcanological outcrops into geospatial models—the so called virtual outcrops (VOs) here defined as virtual geosites (VGs)—through UAV-based photogrammetry and 3D modeling. In the next step, we uploaded them on an online platform that is fully accessible for Earth science teaching and communication. The nine VGs are currently accessible on a PC, a smartphone, or a tablet. Each one includes a detailed description and plenty of annotations available for the viewers during 3D exploration. We present the volcanic ash and tsunami record of the Minoan Late Bronze Age Eruption of Santorini (LBAES) in a distal setting in southwestern Turkey. In one of the drilled cores at the Letoon Hellenic antique site on Eşençay Delta, we encountered a 4 cm thick tephra deposit underlain by 46 cm thick tsunami‐deposited sand (tsunamite), and an organic‐rich layer that we 14C dated to 3295 ± 30 bp or 1633 bc. The relationship between Santorini distal volcanic ash and underlying tsunamite is described and interpreted. LBAES occurred in four main phases: (1) plinian; (2) phreatomagmatic; (3) phreatomagmatic with mudflows; and (4) ignimbritic flows and co‐ignimbrite tephra falls. In this study, we aim to understand which eruptive phases generate distal ash during the Minoan eruptive sequence by examining the 3D surface morphology of ash formed by different fragmentation processes. To that end, we used numerous statistical multivariates, 3D fractal dimension of roughness, and a new textural parameter of surface area‐3D/plotted area‐2D to characterise the eruption dynamics. Based on ash surface morphologies and the calculated statistical parameters, we propose that that distal ash is represented by a single layer composed of well‐mixed (coarse to fine) magmatic and phreatomagmatic ash. We have coupled three independent methods to investigate the time evolution of eruptive intensity during the sub-Plinian and Plinian phases of the 3600-year BP Late Bronze-Age eruption of Santorini Volcano: (1) mass eruption rate based on new lithic isopleth maps for multiple layers of the fall deposit, (2) magma decompression rate calculated from vesicle number densities, and (3) magma decompression rate calculated from H2O gradients in melt reentrants, with methods 2 and 3 measured on the same suite of pyroclasts. Mass eruption rate increased by two orders of magnitude, reaching 210 × 106 kg s−1 at the peak of the Plinian phase (plume height 28.4 ± 1.0 km); it then declined in the final stage of fallout emplacement following the first generation of pyroclastic surges. Decompression rates from melt reentrants (0.008 to 0.25 MPa s−1) are two to three orders of magnitude lower than those from vesicle number densities, assuming heterogeneous vesicle nucleation (2 to 19 MPa s−1). Melt reentrants are thought to record slow decompression in the deep feeder conduit, whereas vesicles record much higher rates of decompression in the shallow conduit due to the steep, nonlinear pressure gradients associated with magma vesiculation and fragmentation. Upwardly converging flow from a dike-like, deep conduit to a more cylindrical, shallow conduit may also have played a role in causing upwardly accelerating flow. Variations in deep decompression rate recorded by melt reentrants are decoupled from mass eruption rate, whereas those recorded by vesicles lie in between. Taken with the transition from unsteady to steady Plinian eruption, this may reflect the existence of transient flow conditions in the conduit system due to widening and lengthening of a deep feeder dike as Plinian eruption progressed. Dacite lavas erupted from Kameni Islands volcanic centre (Greece) during the last 2000 years have a limited range in chemical composition (SiO2 = 64.0–68.5%) which contrasts with their wide range in plagioclase abundance (3–22%) and crystal size distributions. Most plagioclase crystals have simple zoning and occur independently or in loose clusters with finer-grained cores. We propose that magmatic diversity was produced by the interaction between crystals that formed at the base of a magma reservoir and bubbles produced by injection and vesiculation of more mafic magma. Two end-member situations can be identified: in juvenile systems, the basal crystal mass is loosely connected and readily disrupted by bubble formation. The crystal–bubble couples accumulate at the top of the reservoir, from where they can enter the sub-volcanic plumbing system to produce high-crystal content, chemically unevolved magmas. In the mature system, the crystal mass is well connected so bubbles displace the evolved, interstitial magma and liberate only a smaller number of crystals from the crystal mass. This process produces chemically evolved magmas, with lower crystal contents. The oldest lavas seem to have been produced from mature systems, whereas the youngest eruptions were of lavas produced from juvenile systems. Santorini is located in the central part of the Hellenic Volcanic Arc (South Aegean Sea) and is well known for the Late-Bronze-Age \Minoan" eruption that may have been responsible for the decline of the great Minoan civilization on the island of Crete. To use gravity to probe the internal structure of the volcano and to determine whether there are temporal variations in gravity due to near surface changes, we construct two gravity maps. Dionysos Satellite Observatory (DSO) of the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) carried out terrestrial gravity measurements in December 2012 and in September 2014 at selected locations on Thera, Nea Kameni, Palea Kameni, Therasia, Aspronisi and Christiana islands. Absolute gravity values were calculated using raw gravity data at every station for all datasets. The results were compared with gravity measurements performed in July 1976 by DSO/NTUA and absolute gravity values derived from the Hellenic Military Geographical Service (HMGS) and other sources. Marine gravity data that were collected during the PROTEUS project in November and December 2015 fill between the land gravity datasets. An appropriate Digital Elevation Model (DEM) with topographic and bathymetric data was also produced. Finally, based on the two combined datasets (one for 2012{2014 and one for the 1970s), Free air and complete Bouguer gravity anomaly maps were produced following the appropriate data corrections and reductions. The pattern of complete Bouguer gravity anomaly maps was consistent with seismological results within the caldera. Finally from the comparison of the measurements made at the same place, we found that, within the caldera, the inner process of the volcano is ongoing both before, and after, the unrest period of 2011{2012. Featured Application: The paper combined the exploitation of multimodal digital techniques, focusing a novel methodological approach aimed at integrating Immersive Virtual Reality (IVR) for visualization and data collection, followed GIS analysis, in the geological application field. In the present work we highlight the effectiveness of integrating different techniques and tools for better surveying, mapping and collecting data in volcanic areas. We use an Immersive Virtual Reality (IVR) approach for data collection, integrated with Geographic Information System (GIS) analysis in a well-known volcanological site in Santorini (Metaxa mine), a site where volcanic processes influenced the island's industrial development, especially with regard to pumice mining. Specifically, we have focused on: (i) three-dimensional (3D) high-resolution IVR scenario building, based on Structure from Motion photogrammetry (SfM) modeling; (ii) subsequent geological survey, mapping and data collection using IVR; (iii) data analysis, e.g., calculation of extracted volumes, as well as production of new maps in a GIS environment using input data directly from the IVR survey; and finally, (iv) presentation of new outcomes that highlight the importance of the Metaxa Mine as a key geological and volcanological geosite. Unregulated built-up area expansion is a typical practice in Greece mostly on the islands, it is driven by the mass tourism development and the demand for second houses. Significant social, economic and environmental issues are linked to this practice. Santorini, a Greek island – which is characterized by important natural and cultural heritage properties and intense tourist development – is chosen here for the empirical part of the study. This paper attempts to study and quantify both the unregulated built-up area expansion and its impact on the natural and cultural environment. The intense ex-urban built-up area expansion that takes place on Santorini is interpreted on the basis of the Greek spatial planning framework so that its weaknesses that emerge will address the issue. Rockfalls are one of the most dominant geological hazards in mountainous rocky regions with the potential to turn catastrophic if they occur in an anthropogenic environment. Therefore, the identification of potential rockfall locations is of high importance. Susceptibility is the magnitude that describes these locations and its qualitative and quantitative assessment is necessary for the timely treatment of potential events. Quantitative susceptibility assessment can be conducted using either data-driven methods such as bivariate and multivariate statistics as well as artificial neural networks or numerical methods such as static and dynamic models. In both approaches mathematical assumptions have to be made concerning the predisposing factors distribution and so there is an inherent need to achieve the higher possible confidence level in the input data. Such high-resolution data can be acquired using light detection and ranging (LiDAR) scanners. In the current study, LiDAR technology was implemented, and the data processing technique is analyzed step by step providing the reader with a view of the whole procedure. The results produced by the current methodology are validated and interpreted according to in situ measurements and observations based on unmanned aerial vehicle imagery. Post data processing, joint orientation, joint spacing and potential block volumes were extracted considering both persistent and non-persistent joints. The proposed methodology provides the creation of detailed high-resolution spatial distribution maps of the previously mentioned parameters, considering the variability of their values along the slope. The results can be used in a space-resolved susceptibility assessment providing higher-resolution input data for the subsequent susceptibility analysis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This is the first attempt to analyse vascular plant diversity patterns regarding the seven vegetated islands of the Santorini archipelago (Aegean Sea, Greece) as a whole. Hitherto unpublished floristic records, combined with critical use of taxonomic and chorological information from previous and most recent literature, resulted in a total of 696 infrageneric taxa (species and subspecies) occurring in the area. Detailed qualitative and quantitative phytodiversity spectra per individual island are presented, and floristic dissimilarity (beta-diversity) between islands is considered. Spatial distribution of 28 chorological, ecological, vegetative and reproductive traits for each recorded taxon have been calculated in order to detect regional and fundamental patterns in functional biogeography beyond traditional species-based approaches, based on both taxonomic and functional components of diversity. Mediterranean species constitute the most abundant chorological element and therophytes the most abundant life-form element in the region. Surface area is the most influential variable contributing to species richness; very strong relationships in (1) species per area, (2) functional richness per area and (3) functional richness per species richness are revealed for the Santorini archipelago. Floristic cross-correlations revealed an overall high floristic heterogeneity among the individual islands. The phytodiversity assessment presented is undoubtedly of documentary value in consideration of expected future eruptive events in the area which may damage the plant cover at least on some of the involved islands to a yet unpredictable extent. In this study a relation is established between differential stress (σ d), driving magma pressure ratio (R′) and tensile strength (T) of a rock mass in a volcanic system. It is shown that in σ d vs. R′ space, the T curve follows equation of rectangular hyperbola and for dyking or volcanic eruption to occur, this T curve must be exceeded. It is proposed that this theoretical relation can be exploited to understand magma reservoir failure and for volcanic eruption forecasting. Applicability of this concept is demonstrated on Santorini volcanic system (Greece) for which considerable background information is available from previous studies. Published dyke orientation and aspect ratio data from Santorini yield σ d and R′ values of 8.04 MPa and 0.22 respectively. Considering a weak quality host rock mass in Santorini, tensile strength curve for T = 1.5 MPa is plotted in σ d vs R′ space. Considering magma reservoir volume and rock physical property estimates to be valid, and assuming σ d and absolute stress to be constant, it is argued that change in reservoir dynamics would be controlled by variations in volume of magma released from the deeper magma reservoir to shallow reservoir (V r) in Santorini. Values of R′ and V r for the events of non-dyking in Santorini are also calculated. Minimum R′ and V r required to induce dyking and eruption are estimated and it is concluded that the proposed theory can be generally applied for eruption forecasting. • Differential stress (σ d) is related to magma pressure ratio (R′) and tensile strength (T) of rock mass in a volcanic system. • Theoretical relation between σ d , R′ and T is tested on Santorini volcano using available dyke data. • For constant σ d and T, R′ is controlled by magma volume released into the magma reservoir. • Eruption forecasting can be done using σ d , R′ and T relation for any volcanic system. The Minoan eruption of Santorini is one of the largest Holocene volcanic events and produced several cubic kilometers of pyroclastic flows emplaced on the submerged flanks of the volcano. Marine geophysical surveys reveal a multitude of undulating seafloor bedforms (USBs) around Santorini. While similar structures are known from other volcanoes worldwide, Santorini offers the unique opportunity to relate USB formation with volcanic processes during one of the best-studied volcanic eruptions worldwide. In this study, we combine high-resolution seismic reflection data with multibeam echosounder bathymetry to reveal the internal architecture of USBs around Santorini and to relate their morphological characteristics to formational processes. The USBs around Santorini were formed during the Minoan eruption and represent the seafloor expression of mass transport deposits. Three types of deposits differ in composition or origin. (1) Depositional USBs, which can only be found to the north of the island, where Minoan eruption ignimbrites reach their maximum thickness and the undulating topography is the result of thrusting within the deposit. (2) USBs related to slope failures of volcaniclastics from the entire Thera Pyroclastic Formation, which can be found east, south, and west of the island. (3) USBs associated with deep-seated deformation, which occurs on the southwestern flank along an area affected by rift tectonics and extends to a depth of more than 200 m below the seafloor. In cases (2) and (3), the USBs are formed upslope by block rotation and downslope by thrusting. Our study indicates that these processes may have contributed to the generation of the devastating Minoan tsunami. Since Santorini is located in one of the most tectonically active regions in the Mediterranean, capable of producing earthquakes with magnitude M7+, our study has important implications for hazard assessment. This study investigates the hazard posed by Volcanic Ballistic Projectiles (VBPs) to the Santorini islands considering eruption scenarios that include low (VEI = 2–3) and higher energy (VEI > 3) eruptions. A model that describes rapid decompression of pressurized magma below a caprock along with its fragmentation and acceleration of particles is utilized for estimating initial velocities during vulcanian-style eruptions. These initial velocities are inserted into the ballistic equations assuming that VBPs have a cube-like shape, are subjected to gravity/drag forces and are launched into a zone of reduced drag. Four different diameters of VBPs are considered (0.35 m, 1.0 m, 2.0 m, 3.0 m) and also different values of gas fractions and extent of the reduced drag zone are investigated. The results of these calculations show that an area of 1–2 km width along the western coast of Thera will be within the maximum range of VBPs, provided that the eruptive vent will develop either on Nea Kameni or between Nea Kameni and Thera. Initial velocities for higher energy eruptions are estimated by considering the conversion efficiency of thermal to kinetic energy. For the case of an eruption with VEI = 4 and a number of vents centered between Nea and Palea Kameni, calculations show that the coastal areas of Thera and Therasia are within the maximum horizontal range of VBPs with diameter larger than 0.35 m. As the exact position of the eruptive vent seems to be of crucial importance for determining the areas at risk, continuous seismic and geodetic monitoring of the caldera is needed in order to decipher its likely location. Santorini volcano in the Aegean region (Greece) is characterized by andesitic- to silicic-dominated explosive activity and caldera-forming eruptions, sourced from magmatic reservoirs located at various structural levels beneath the volcano. There is a good understanding of the silica-rich magmatism of the island whereas the andesite-dominated volcanism and the petrogenesis of the parental mafic magmas are still poorly understood. To fill this gap we have performed crystallization experiments on a representative basalt from Santorini with the aim of determining the conditions of differentiation (pressure, temperature, volatile fugacities) and the parental magma relationship with the andesitic eruptive rocks. Experiments were carried out between 975 and 1040°C, in the pressure range 100-400 MPa, fO2 from QFM to NNO + 3·5 (where QFM is quartz-fayalite-magnetite and NNO is nickel-nickel oxide), with H2Omelt contents varying from saturation to nominally dry conditions. The results show that basalt phenocrysts within the basalt crystallized at around 1040°C in a magma storage reservoir located at a depth equivalent to 200-400 MPa pressure, with 3-5 wt % dissolved H2O, and fO2 around QFM. Comparison with the xenocryst and phenocryst assemblages of the Upper Scoria 1 andesite shows that andesitic liquids are produced by fractionation of a similar basalt at 1000°C and 400 MPa, following 60-80 wt % crystallization of an ol + cpx + plag + Ti-mag + opx ± pig-ilm assemblage, with melt water contents around 4-6 wt %. At Santorini, the andesitic low-viscosity and water-rich residual liquids produced at these depths segregate from the parent basaltic mush and feed the shallow magma reservoirs, eventually erupting upon mixing with resident magma. Changes in prevailing oxygen fugacity may control the tholeiitic-calc-alkaline character of Santorini magmas, explaining the compositional and mineralogical differences observed between the recent Thyra and old eruptive products from Akrotiri. Santorini is the most active volcano of the Southern Aegean Volcanic Arc, with volcanic material that has accumulated during the last 600+ Kyrs on top of the pre-volcanic Santorini island. The geometry of the pre-volcanic basement not only provides constraints on the volcanic history, but is also fundamental for seismic hazard assessment, as it partly controls site-effects on strong ground motions. We investigate the geometry of the metamorphic (Cycladic) basement of Santorini using information from both passive (noise) and active source data. We performed a large number (∼280) of single-station ambient noise measurements and collected additional data from 42 previous studies to compute the Horizontal-to-Vertical Spectral Ratio (HVSR) curves. The majority of the recovered HVSR curves show prominent spectral ratio peaks (locally larger than 7–8) indicating a large impedance contrast between pyroclastic volcanic strata and bedrock metamorphic formations. We also performed active (MASW) and passive (Noise Array) surface wave measurements at 4 selected sites to determine local dispersion curves. To find the 1D Vs structure from the surface down to the metamorphic bedrock we performed a joint Monte Carlo inversion of the dispersion curves and the fundamental frequency (f 0 HVSR) values from the HVSR curves. These models, as well as deep borehole information and HVSR data along the caldera cliff, where the thickness and stratigraphy of the volcanic formations above the bedrock can be directly observed, allowed us to determine a linear relationship between the thickness of the pyroclastic formations and their fundamental resonance period for central-southern Santorini. The resulting geometry of pre-volcanic island shows deep basins around the pre-Alpine bedrock outcrop (Profitis Ilias) and generally agrees with recent results from larger-scale tomographic and gravity data but with some significant local differences. The basins are 200+ meters thick in the Kamari and Perissa area (southeastern Santorini) and >400 m thick in the central (Fira-Imerovigli) area, while there is a thick (∼70-130 m) pyroclastic layer on top of a metamorphic basement "plateau" in the Megalochori area. • Prominent HVSR peaks due to the high impedance contrast of pyroclastics and bedrock. • Several V S profiles derived from joint inversion of noise arrays and active seismics. • Soil resonant period correlates with bedrock depth from Vs profiles and geology. • The observed correlation allowed to map the pre-volcanic metamorphic basement geometry. • The metamorphic bedrock model provides control on the volcanic history of Santorini. In this work, we document two distinct tsunami deposits on the coasts of Ios Island, Aegean Sea, Greece. The younger tsunami deposit, dated 1831–1368 cal. BCE, includes both marine sediments and pumices from the ∼1600 BCE Minoan eruption of Santorini volcano. This is the first evidence of the Minoan tsunami in the Cycladic Islands North of Santorini. Tsunami waves inundated the Manganari coastal plain, southern coast of Ios, over a distance >200 m (>2 m a.s.l.). The second tsunami deposit reworks pumice from the 22 ka Cape Riva eruption mixed with marine sediment. We assume a Neolithic age for this major tsunami, with a wave runup >13 m a.s.l. on the southern and eastern coasts of Ios. The source of this tsunami - volcanic eruption, landslide, or earthquake - remains unknown. Abstract: Isolated patches of Santorini pumice deposits are analysed from the non-volcanic island of Anafi at a distance of 31–38km east from the centre of the Santorini caldera. The deposits are Plinian fall profiles with a primary thickness at this distance of 1.2–1.5m and MP (maximum pumice) and ML (maximum lithic) diameters of 5 and 4cm, respectively. The characteristic profile sequence of the analysed Anafi deposits corresponds perfectly with the Plinian sequence of the Lower Pumice 2 (LP2) profiles on Thera, the main island of the Santorini group, with the sub-divisions into LP2-A2-1, LP2-A2-2 and LP2-A3. Pumice glass chemistry, phenocryst assemblage and the significant content of grey cauliform scoriae make the compositional correlation with the Plinian LP2 eruption of Santorini unambiguous. With the new identification of LP2 deposits on Anafi, together with an ~4–5 times greater thickness in the main axis of dispersal of the proximal Plinian LP2 deposits compared to the Minoan fallout on Thera, the Plinian opening phase of the 172ka LP2 eruption (LP2-A) is regarded by far as the most voluminous of all Plinian eruptive phases on Santorini. Santorini Volcano, located in the central sector of the South Aegean volcanic arc, is one of the most active and potentially dangerous volcanoes in Europe. It has hosted Plinian eruptions over the last 350 ka of which at least four eruptions were accompanied by caldera collapses. Even though Santorini Volcano is considered a major threat, the main focus of research, thus far, has been on the comparatively young and subaerial deposits, whereas older stages of volcanism have been poorly studied. Our study focusses on samples from the submarine inner caldera walls and gives new insights into the early evolutionary stages of Santorini Volcano, contributing to a better understanding of its eruptive history and thus potential risks. The submarine lava successions were sampled along the inner caldera wall by a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) during R/V POSEIDON cruise 511 in 2017. The recovered lavas comprise two magmatic series, a low-K basaltic series overlain by a medium- to high-K series, which includes basaltic andesites, andesites and occasional dacites to trachytes. Major and trace element compositions and mineral zonation patterns suggest that fractional crystallisation and periodic magma replenishment were the dominant processes controlling magma evolution of both magmatic series. In addition, repeated magma mixing events played an important role, as indicated by zonation patterns in plagioclase and clinopyroxene ante- and phenocrysts. The thickness of the submarine lava successions (≥100 m) and the occurrence of similarly zoned plagioclase throughout indicate long-lived magma plumbing systems characterised by repeated differentiation and magma mixing. Furthermore, the incompatible element and radiogenic isotope ratios indicate a heterogeneous mantle source for Santorini magmas, which reflects the relative contribution of subduction (sedimentary) input and mantle wedge influx. A lava sample from the northern submarine caldera wall probably represents a deep level of the original Peristeria volcano. 40Ar/39Ar dating of andesite lavas from the southern submarine caldera produced ages of ~255 ka, whereas one basalt lava produced an age of 309 ± 30 ka. Interestingly, the new ages of both groups fall within an age gap in the volcanic history of Santorini Volcano. Even though it was not possible to unequivocally correlate the sampled submarine lava series to known subaerial units, the major and trace element compositions, and Sr-Nd-Pb isotopic compositions of our intermediate lavas show a strong similarity to subaerial lavas of Peristeria volcano, the second oldest major stage of Santorini volcanism. This article deals with the archaeological site of Akrotiri on the Cycladic island of Thera (Santorini), Greece, and demonstrates, in particular, how the construction of a new protective shelter has provided an opportunity for enhancing the present and future conservation and management of the site in accordance with, among other values, the aspirations of the local community. Drawing on the experience of the author as Director of the excavation, special emphasis will be placed on the features of the new bioclimatic shelter that can accommodate the continuous use of the site as both a scientific workshop and a tourist attraction. Abstract: This article analyzes rockfall susceptibility in the steep caldera slopes upstream of Athinios port, Santorini Island, Greece. The study area is situated in the internal rim of a submarine caldera where the most important problem that is recorded is the frequent rockfalls that not only cause damages to roads and vehicles but also pose a threat to people that are transported or located on the port. As a result, a methodology which combines information relatively to surficial and engineering geology, geomorphological processes, and structural analysis was adopted. The methodology incorporates evenly a maximum runout map generated by means of reach probability of rock block analysis, using the empirical model of “reach angle”. Additionally volumes of rockfall events categorized and presented through a map to assist the compilation of rockfall susceptibility map which allows us to identify areas and human activities exposed to these incidents and set up several protection meters. The present study was aimed at determining whether microorganisms mediate iron oxide deposition in a shallow bay (Iron Bay) on the still volcanically active island of Palaea Kameni, Santorini, Greece, north of Crete in the Aegean Sea. The results of in situ experiments showed that iron oxide deposition in this marine environment occurs at an exceptionally high rate. It was also found that deposition in the central part of the bay proceeded within specific vertical zones in the water column, showing that the bay may be regarded as a stratified system. Using light and scanning electron microscopic methods, including electron probe microanalysis, it was shown that deposition (binding and oxidation) of Fe(II) was mediated by bacteriological processes, which differed in intensity depending on their specific location in the bay. The most intensive iron oxidations and depositions were found in the hot volcanic springs at the toe of the bay, where rates more than 60 times those found in freshwater iron-oxidizing environments were measured. Bacteria that excreted extracellular slime (EPS), which apparently catalysed the process and itself became encrusted with tiny globules of hydrated iron(III) oxide, were responsible for this extremly high rate of iron deposition. The same process of oxidation catalysed by bacterial EPS was also responsible for iron oxide deposition in the main oxidation zone in the central part of the bay. Thus, precipitation of Fe(II) in Iron Bay is not, as was previously assumed, a purely chemical, Eh- and pH-dependent process, but results from the interaction of water chemistry with a high level of bacterial activity, especially surface reactions on bacterial excretion products. Seven sediment cores from the Palaea and Nea Kameni hydrothermal embayments (PK and NK) on Santorini have been studied by using sediment smear slides, X-ray diffraction, and radiocarbon techniques to determine their lithology, mineralogy, and age, respectively. The cores have been analyzed chemically for a suite of elements, including selective chemical leaching, to determine the partition of elements between coexisting phases. Lithologically and chemically, the sediments from the two embayments are very different. Sediments from PK are oxidized in the upper parts of the cores and reduced at depth; they comprise mainly hydrothermal pyritiferous diatomaceous ooze with minor Fe oxyhydroxide, volcanic debris, gypsum, and siderite. Sediments from NK are oxidized throughout and comprise predominantly amorphous iron oxyhydroxides and goethite; they are thought to have formed by direct precipitation from solution. In PK, biogenic, detrital seawater evaporate, and hydrothermal sediment phases have been identified but only the detrital inputs can be correlated between cores. Mn shows a pronounced enrichment towards the outer part of the embayment because of its dispersion down the embayment and precipitation in the more-oxidizing sediments towards the open sea. In NK, the sediments contain detrital, seawater evaporate, and hydrothermally precipitated and scavenged phases. The presence of substantial amounts of organic matter in the PK sediments but not in the NK sediments is probably the main reason why geochemical processes in the two embayments are different. Age dates obtained from the cores by using the [sup 14]C technique indicate that sedimentation in the PK embayment commenced at approximately 50 AD, whereas in the NK embayment it commenced at approximately 1900 AD, which is consistent with the known history of Santorini. Based on these dates, calculated metal accumulation rates in both embayments are higher than in any other dated hydrothermal metalliferous sediments with the exception of those in the Atlantis II Deep of the Red Sea. Immersive virtual reality can potentially open up interesting geological sites to students, academics and others who may not have had the opportunity to visit such sites previously. We study how users perceive the usefulness of an immersive virtual reality approach applied to Earth Sciences teaching and communication. During nine immersive virtual reality-based events held in 2018 and 2019 in various locations (Vienna in Austria, Milan and Catania in Italy, Santorini in Greece), a large number of visitors had the opportunity to navigate, in immersive mode, across geological landscapes reconstructed by cutting-edge, unmanned aerial system-based photogrammetry techniques. The reconstructed virtual geological environments are specifically chosen virtual geosites, from Santorini (Greece), the North Volcanic Zone (Iceland), and Mt. Etna (Italy). Following the user experiences, we collected 459 questionnaires, with a large spread in participant age and cultural background. We find that the majority of respondents would be willing to repeat the immersive virtual reality experience, and importantly, most of the students and Earth Science academics who took part in the navigation confirmed the usefulness of this approach for geo-education purposes. The erosion of sandy beaches creates a significant impact on the local society, the economy and the environment. The present study is an attempt to adapt the innovative DESSIN (Demonstrate Ecosystem Services Enabling Innovation in the Water Sector) framework that specializes in freshwater applications, to urban coastal systems. The framework is applied in the case of Kamari beach, Santorini (Greece), to assess the sustainability of all possible anti-erosion measures. To identify the most vulnerable parts of the coastline, the study used two sensitivity indices: the Coastal Vulnerability Index (CVI), and the Socioeconomic Index (SocCVI). A supply-demand model was applied for the integration of all three aspects that characterize the system: social, economic, and environmental. To project the impact of erosion in the future, the system's state was analyzed in three steps a) the present, b) after the installation of the coastal protection measures and c) a scenario where no protection actions were taken (RCP4.5 scenario). In the current situation the most susceptible part of the coastline due to anthropogenic and environmental pressures is the central one, which does not immediately affect the socio-economic activities of the urban area. In contrast, future changes brought about by climate change will endanger the system's equilibrium and anti-erosion actions are necessary. With the application of the adapted DESSIN framework, the combined installation of submerged breakwaters with sediment replacement is the most sustainable action, promoting socio-economic growth and the protection of essential ecosystem services. Bathymetric and seismic data provide insights into the geomorphological configuration, seismic stratigraphy, structure, and evolution of the area between Santorini, Amorgos, Astypalea, and Anafi islands. Santorini-Amorgos Shear Zone (SASZ) is a NE-SW striking feature that includes seven basins, two shallow ridges, and hosts the volcanic centers of Santorini and Kolumbo. The SASZ initiated in the Early Pliocene as a single, W-E oriented basin. A major reorganization of the geodynamic regime led to (i) reorientation of the older faults and initiation of NE-SW striking ones, (ii) disruption of the single basin and localized subsidence and uplift, (iii) creation of four basins out of the former single one (Anafi, Amorgos South, Amorgos North, and Kinairos basins), (iv) rifting of the northern and southern margins and creation of Anydros, Astypalea North, and Astypalea South basins, and (v) uplift of the ridges. Dextral shearing and oblique rifting are accommodated by NE-SW striking, dextral oblique to strike-slip faults and by roughly W-E striking, normal, transfer faults. It is suggested here that enhanced shearing in NE-SW direction and oblique rifting may be the dominant deformation mechanism in the South Aegean since Early Quaternary associated with the interaction of North Anatolian Fault with the slab roll-back. Marine microbial communities are an untapped reservoir of genetic and metabolic diversity and a valuable source for the discovery of new natural products of biotechnological interest. The newly discovered hydrothermal vent field of Santorini volcanic complex located in the Aegean Sea is gaining increasing interest for potential biotechnological exploitation. The conditions in these environments, i.e., high temperatures, low pH values and high concentration of heavy metals, often resemble harsh industrial settings. Thus, these environments may serve as pools of enzymes of enhanced catalytic properties that may provide benefits to biotechnology. Here, we screened 11 metagenomic libraries previously constructed from microbial mat samples covering the seafloor and the polymetallic chimneys of Kolumbo volcano as well as mat samples from Santorini caldera, to mine, in silico, genes associated with bioenergy applications. We particularly focused on genes encoding biomass hydrolysis enzymes such as cellulases, hemicellulases and lignin-degrading enzymes. A total of 10,417 genes were found for three specific groups of enzymes—i.e., the endoglucanases, the three different beta-glucosidases BGL, bglX and bglB, and the alpha-galactosidases melA, and rafA. Overall, we concluded that the Santorini–Kolumbo volcanic ecosystems constitute a significant resource of novel genes with potential applications in bioenergy that deserve further investigation. The Santorini-Amorgos zone is located in the central part of the Hellenic volcanic arc and is hosting eight large faults as well as Kolumbo and Santorini volcanic centers. The largest earthquake (M w ~ 7.1) in the southern Aegean during the 20th century also occurred in this area on 9 July 1956. A total of 1868 crustal events were recorded by temporary networks during September 2002 to July 2004 and October 2005 to March 2007, and also by the permanent network from 2011 to 2019. We relocated 1455 of these events by using HypoDD and revealed clusters of earthquakes beneath Kolumbo, Anydros graben, and Santorini-Amorgos ridge. Only the faults in the SW of Anydros, SE of Ios, and along the south coast of Amorgos were delineated by the relocated events. Nearly vertical clusters were observed beneath the island of Anydros, south of Amorgos, and in NE end of Amorgos fault, indicating possible pathways of upward migrating fluids. The seismogenic layer thickness calculated based on the depth distribution of the relocated events was 12.5 km. We combined this thickness with geometrical properties of the faults to calculate the expected moment magnitude of future earthquakes, resulting in a range of 6.3–7.2. In an effort to map the distribution of fluids, the Vp/Vs ratio distribution was estimated by utilizing the event-station travel time data along with crack density, fluid saturation, and Poisson's ratio. The petrophysical parameters observed in the northern part of the Santorini caldera suggest the existence of melt, while those observed in Anydros and in the NE of Amorgos fault support the suggestion of upward migrating fluids in these areas. • A total of 1455 crustal events in Santorini-Amorgos zone have been relocated. • The seismogenic layer along the zone is found to be 12.5 km thick. • Expected moment magnitude of future earthquakes is in the range of 6.3 to 7.2. • High Vp/Vs ratios in northern part of Santorini caldera indicate the presence of melt. • Upward migrating fluids exist at areas with vertical earthquake clusters. Santorini Island, located in the Southern Aegean Sea, is prone to tsunamis due to its proximity to the Hellenic subduction zone, which is one of the major tsunamigenic areas. Characteristic events, such as those of 365 A.D. and 1303 A.D. greatly affected the coasts of the Eastern Mediterranean Sea, causing significant loss of life and construction damage. Tsunami disaster risk is nowadays significantly higher due to the increased exposure of the buildings as a result of the economic and touristic growth of the Aegean Islands. This study focuses on the eastern coast of Santorini, since its morphology and human presence amplify the necessity to assess its building vulnerability. After conducting an exposure analysis at the settlements of the eastern coast, Kamari poses the highest physical, social and economic relative exposure to any potential natural hazard. The main objective of this research is to quantify the building stock's vulnerability to tsunami hazard. For this purpose, a "worst-case run-up scenario" was developed. Considering the history of tsunamis in the Aegean Sea, an extreme sea-level rise after a 10 m a.s.l. tsunami run-up, caused by an earthquake with Mw~8.5, was assumed. The relative vulnerability of the buildings in Kamari was calculated via the application of the Papathoma Tsunami Vulnerability Assessment (PTVA-4) analytic model. The results indicate that 423 buildings are within the inundation zone, 58% of which are characterized as highly and very highly vulnerable to tsunamis, revealing the problematic characteristics of the building stock, offering important information to the decision-makers to mitigate a possible future tsunami impact. The enormous tourism boom raises concern about possible negative environmental impacts worldwide. One of the risks posed by tourism may be heavy metal pollution. On the example of the volcanic island of Santorini, a popular tourist destination, pollution of soils categorized according to the tourism load was monitored. Significant anthropogenic contamination by heavy metals, especially Cu, Cr and Pb, was found out. This contamination may constitute a moderate ecological risk to the island ecosystems. Tourism has been shown to be a significant pollution factor as evidenced by the contaminated soils near the airport. Simultaneously, airport traffic has been proved to be an important emitter of Co, Cr and especially Zn. The comparison with other volcanic islands has shown that on Santorini the content of heavy metals in soils is significantly lower, despite frequently higher tourism intensity. On this basis, it can be concluded that in case of volcanic islands the dominant factor determining the content of heavy metals in the soil is the parent rock. Given high and ever-increasing intensity of tourism on the island, it can be assumed that soil contamination will continue to rise rapidly. Therefore, without proper steps reducing tourism, increase in soil degradation, growing negative impacts on local ecosystems as well as on the quality of produced wine can be expected on Santorini. Santorini volcanic complex (Greece) is the result of a long evolutionary history, marked by the alternation of explosive (Plinian) eruptions and interplinian low explosive/effusive eruptive cycles. Products emitted during the interplinian stages are well exposed along the rim of the calderic structure formed during the major Minoan (3.6 ka) Plinian eruption. We conducted a systematic sampling of the basaltic to dacitic lavas erupted by the interplinian volcanic centre of Skaros, active between 67 and 54 ka. The continuously exposed products of the Skaros lifecycle offer the tremendous opportunity to reconstruct the petrological evolution of the volcanic centre, and in turn to provide new insights on the behaviour of Santorini feeding system during interplinian stages. The combination of whole-rock, mineral chemistry and synchrotron X-ray computed microtomography analyses enabled us to decipher the main physico-chemical parameters of the Skaros plumbing system that drove ascent and differentiation processes of magmas. Results indicate that the main magma ponding zone beneath Skaros centre extended from 12 to 4 km b.s.l., where it underwent frequent refilling by basaltic melts. In the later evolutionary stage of the Skaros system, the basaltic replenishment became less frequent allowing the ultimate differentiation of magma towards dacitic composition. The shallow nature of the magma ponding zone, sited well above the H 2 O saturation depth, favoured the continuous degassing and inhibited the increase of vapor pressure during differentiation, preventing the onset of explosive eruptions, as in case of the major explosive events at Santorini. • Skaros volcano (Santirini) inter-Plinian effusive activity products were investigated. • The polybaric plumbing system was frequently fed by basaltic melts at early stages. • Magma feeding decreased in the late stage of the volcano activity. • Emitted lavas evolved towards more acidic composition. • Shallow depth of ponding zones favoured degassing, preventing explosive eruptions. The island of Santorini in the Aegean Sea is one of the world's most violent active volcanoes. Santorini has produced numerous highly explosive eruptions over at least the past ∼360 kyrs that are documented by the island's unique proximal tephra record. However, the lack of precise eruption ages and comprehensive glass geochemical datasets for proximal tephras has long hindered the development of a detailed distal tephrostratigraphy for Santorini eruptions. In light of these requirements, this study develops a distal tephrostratigraphy for Santorini covering the past ∼360 kyrs, which represents a major step forward towards the establishment of a tephrostratigraphic framework for the Eastern Mediterranean region. We present new EPMA glass geochemical data of proximal tephra deposits from twelve Plinian and numerous Inter-Plinian Santorini eruptions and use this dataset to establish assignments of 28 distal marine tephras from three Aegean Sea cores (KL49, KL51 and LC21) to specific volcanic events. Based on interpolation of sapropel core chronologies we provide new eruption age estimates for correlated Santorini tephras, including dates for major Plinian eruptions, Upper Scoriae 1 (80.8 ± 2.9 ka), Vourvoulos (126.5 ± 2.9 ka), Middle Pumice (141.0 ± 2.6 ka), Cape Thera (156.9 ± 2.3 ka), Lower Pumice 2 (176.7 ± 0.6 ka), Lower Pumice 1 (185.7 ± 0.7 ka), and Cape Therma 3 (200.2 ± 0.9 ka), but also for 17 Inter-Plinian events. Older Plinian and Inter-Plinian activity between ∼310 ka and 370 ka, documented in the distal terrestrial setting of Tenaghi Philippon (NE Greece), is independently dated by palynostratigraphy and complements the distal Santorini tephrostratigraphic record. Under the European FP7 SNOWBALL project (2014–2017), the island of Santorini was used as a case study to validate a procedure to assess the possible multiple cascading effects caused by volcanic eruptions. From January 2011 to April 2012, the area was affected by low to moderate (Mw <3.2) seismic shaking, which caused concern regarding a possible volcanic eruption that ultimately failed to materialize. Assuming the worst-case scenario of a sub-Plinian eruption, this study provides insights into the approach adopted by the SNOWBALL project to identify the most critical areas (hot spots) for slope stability. Geological field surveys, thematic maps, and geomorphological data on aerial photos and landform interpretation were adopted to assess the static susceptibility. The eruption scenario is related to two different phenomena: a pre-eruption earthquake (Mw 5.2) and the subsequent ash fallout deposition following the prevailing winds. Landslide susceptibility in seismic conditions was assessed through the HAZUS approach and the estimate of Newmark displacements (u), while the critical areas for ash fallout mobilization were assessed adopting empirical relationships.
