This Special Topic section of Biomicrofluidics is dedicated to original papers from the 2006 Annual Meeting of the American Electrophoresis Society (AES: http://www.aesociety.org). The article reports on the development of an optical method for controlling liquid flow in microfluidic devices by Luke P. Lee and colleagues at the University of California, San Francisco. It presents the photothermal nanoparticles (PNP) into a millimeter-scale droplet wherein a beam illuminates it and the particles produce heat and shift it to the surrounding liquid. The shift speeds the evaporation and produces a vapor. The vapor blends with the original droplet. The method exhibits that the PNP could attain the laminar, unidirectional flow in microfluidic channels.
