The objective of this work is to report the presence of Werneckiella equi, in a horse from the city of Salta in order to provide information of regional epidemiological relevance and also document the first case of infestation by this parasite in the Northwest of Argentina. A horse of about 8 years old with intense itching and poor body condition, that lived on a property in the urban area of the city of Salta, Argentina, was brought to the consultation. In the particular inspection of the skin, lice were observed, which were collected and sent to the laboratory. Based on the clinical information, further analysis was performed. On the basis of clinical information and parasitological studies, it was determined that the animal was suffering from an infestation of Werneckiella equi. The horse was treated with oral ivermectin, showing improvement and disappearance of the parasites on the skin. What is described in this work is the first report at a regional level and highlights the possibility of occurrence of this presentation in horses that show symptoms of pruritus. The aim of this work is to describe a case of mixed resistance, finding for the first time low antiparasitic efficacy against Cooperia curticei in a sheep flock in the province of Salta. The work was carried out in an establishment in Cerrillos town, province of Salta. Four groups of 10 animals each were formed: a control group, a group treated with ivermectin, another treated with albendazole and another treated with levamisole. The efficacy results were 50.5% for ivermectin, 68.7% for albendazole, and 99.2% for levamisole. Regarding the efficacy by gender, it was 42.8%, 64.8% and 97% in Haemonchus contortus, 100%, 79.2% and 99.3% for Trichostrongylus colubriformis and 88.5%, 100 % and 100% for C. curticei for ivermectin, albendazole and levamisole respectively. This finding warns about the AR situation and of the wide distribution of the use of various chemical groups under study in the region's flocks, which should be considered. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The paper analyzes the processes through which Cerro San Bernardo (Salta) has become a tourist observation point, considering material adaptations, images and practices involved. To that end, promotional information concerning this hill as an observation point and Salta as a tourist attraction was gathered and systematized. Tourists’ activities were also observed and recorded. In addition, personal interviews to public and private actors involved in local tourism were conducted. The paper concludes that visual appreciation from the top of San Bernardo replicates some traditions about what to do at observation points and how. It also points out the need to consider these places and the observation practices associated to them together with the array of activities involved in tourists' visits. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article addresses the role of tourist movement in defining Salta (Argentina) as a tourist place. To achieve that goal, specific practices of displacement by tourists who hire guided tours were observed. As a preliminary study, the paper discusses traditional approaches to guided tours as highly standardized and prescribed experiences. Likewise, it highlights the active participation of the different actors taking part in these tours. The article addresses the relationship between tourism, geography, and images, seeking to recognize how images mediate place tourist experience. To do this, the paper analyzes the official tourism promotion of Salta (Argentina) considering the main ideas about the destination created by local government. This is done by examining graphic material (booklets, books, magazines, brochures, posters, maps, etc.) edited and distributed by provincial government since 2007 to 2019. The analysis of graphic devices produced by provincial government shows that there are two main ideas about Salta as a tourist place. One of them portraits Salta as an unvisited place that is ideal for initial exploration. The other idea depicts it as a place where tourists can get access to an unaltered and rich cultural heritage. The text concludes by pointing out that official promotion strategy renews tourists' interest for the exotic, the different, and the remote, while allowing the multiplication of business options in a context where diversity is necessary to increase consumption. Abstract: The use of renewable energy presents a great potential to solve energy problems in remote communities. However, in populations of the northwestern of Argentina, there are a large number of abandoned devices. This situation motivated the research on the processes of ‘technology transfer’, in order to make theoretical and methodological contributions to help to improve them. The development of this work was based on the analysis of case studies in the Andean communities of Cabrería, San Juan and Las Capillas (Province of Salta, Argentina) where solar water heaters were ‘transferred’. The main results presented in this paper are the identification, assessment and analysis of factors and sub-factors that conditions the analyzed processes. There were identified the following determining factors: solar technology, community participation, involvement of technicians, inter-institutional coordination, logistics and monitoring of the project, and structure of the community. The analysis of interaction showed a strong interdependence among factors, in this manner; the way in which a factor is applied directly influences the development of other factors. Finally, it should be noted that although the analyzed experiences have much in common, each situation of socio-technical adequacy is particular and therefore it requires the opening-up of researchers and technicians to adapt technologies and methodological approaches of these processes. Although mostly forgotten, malaria was once widespread in Argentina's Northwest region and had a dramatic impact on public health and social development. This paper explores the malaria problem in the social, demographic, and environmental context of Argentina in the early 1900s, when prevalence of the disease was at its height. Using a diverse range of sources and a mixture of historical demographic, spatial analytical, and qualitative methods, the geographical distribution of malaria and its association with social and environmental factors is analyzed. Examination of the general epidemiology of malaria in the Northwest is complemented by case studies that demonstrate the complex dynamics of malaria in the city of Salta and the agricultural hinterland of Tucumán province. Although malaria was a widespread and commonplace illness in the region, and garnered much political attention, it was neither a leading cause of mortality not a cause of demographic stagnation. Improvements in sanitary infrastructure and drainage helped facilitate the decline of malaria in urban centers, although the relationship of the disease with wetland hazards remains unclear. In rural areas, the tenuous and impoverished conditions of agricultural laborers helped to sustain malaria transmission, bur permanent workers in sugar mills enjoyed better health conditions, generally. Overall, this paper demonstrates the utility, of historical statistical and spatial analysis, complemented by more fine-grained qualitative research, in drawing out the social and environmental dimensions of past disease complexes. Onsite Domestic Wastewater Treatment Systems (ODWTS) are increasingly important for treating domestic wastewater in metropolitan contexts, especially in suburban sectors isolated from sewer networks and centralized treatment plants. When ODWTS are not correctly planned and located in suitable places, or are not properly designed, they can cause groundwater contamination and generate risks for human health. This work presents a Spatial Decision Support System (SDSS) to zone specific areas based on a few simple parameters. The proposed tool can be easily adapted to different contexts, even where institutional capacities are low. Results obtained in the metropolitan area of the Lerma Valley (Salta, Argentina) show strong contradictions between our zoning and current urbanization features in the study area. As a result, environmental impacts and health hazards are likely to manifest in the short or medium term. The sectors with the best receptivity conditions were found in the southern sector of the study area. We argue that ODWTS can be safely implemented in many areas as long as this concept is embedded in urban planning initiatives, which usually also require the consolidation or development of appropriate institutions and control systems.
