The least known of the composers represented on this disc is Aleksandr Aleksandrovich Kopylov (1854-1911), a Russian violinist and composer. It is my understanding that Zimbalist composed this piece for violin and orchestra, and the notes for this release are silent as to whether the violin and piano arrangement is by Zimbalist or someone else. Stravinsky's Suite italienne is an arrangement of movements from his ballet Pulcinella, prepared in collaboration with the violinist Samuel Dushkin, with whom the composer performed many times in concert in the 1930s. The performing ensemble, Duo Natalia, consists of the German-born violinist Natalia van der Mersch and the pianist Natalia Kovalzon, who is a native of the Central Asian former Soviet republic of Kirghizstan.
