Lake Onego is the second largest lake in Europe and it is situated in the Northwest of Russia. Benthal deposits of lake Onego are known to contain a large number of iron ore, and that affects the bacterial communities present in the lake. Some bacteria have a defense mechanism against the toxicity of metal ions which involves formation of metal nanoparticles. Bacterial synthesis of metal nanoparticles has a wide range of applications in industry due to its low cost, non-toxicity and eco-friendliness. Due to their magnetic and electric properties, iron containing nanoparticles can be used in biomedicine from anti-cancer therapy to drug delivery. The study examines the capability of lake Onego bacteria to form iron containing nanoparticles. Eight water samples from lake Onego were grown on a special medium and treated with a FeCl3*6H2O solution. We isolated two bacterial cultures capable to form nanoparticles, and iron containing nanoparticles were obtained from five water samples. The sizes of the obtained nanoparticles were characterized using scanning electron microscopy and dynamic light scattering. The effect of temperature, incubation time and quantity of the salt solution on the formation of nanoparticles was studied. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
