A recent study conducted at St. Petersburg State University in Russia explored the differences between mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) from various sources and their ability to undergo osteogenic differentiation and produce extracellular matrix. The researchers analyzed primary cultures of MSCs from six human sources and found that despite similarities in osteogenic differentiation, the cells maintained their embryonic specificity after isolation and differentiation in vitro. The study also proposed classifying mesenchymal cells into three groups: dental stem cells of neural crest origin, mesenchymal stem cells, and fetal stem cells.
