The prevalence of mental disorders and how they are diagnosed represent some of the major problems in psychiatry. Modern genetic tools offer the potential to reduce the complications concerning diagnosis. However, the vast genetic diversity in the world population requires a closer investigation of any selected populations. In the current research, four polymorphisms, namely rs6265 in BDNF, rs10835210 in BDNF, rs6313 in HTR2A, and rs1800955 in DRD4, were analyzed in a case–control study of 2393 individuals (1639 patients with mental disorders (F20-F29, F30-F48) and 754 controls) from the European part of Russia using the TaqMan SNP genotyping method. Significant associations between rs6265 BDNF and rs1800955 DRD4 and mental impairments were detected when comparing the general group of patients with mental disorders (without separation into diagnoses) to the control group. Associations of rs6265 in BDNF, rs1800955 in DRD4, and rs6313 in HTR2A with schizophrenia in patients from the schizophrenia group separately compared to the control group were also found. The obtained results can extend the concept of a genetic basis for mental disorders in the Russian population and provide a basis for the future improvement in psychiatric diagnostics. The ice-rich core formation within the core of the lithalsa in the Sentsa River valley (West Buryatia) was studied. The concentrations of stable oxygen and hydrogen isotopes in the ice were determined, the plant residues in the enclosing deposits were aged. It was found that the lacustrine loams enclosing the ice body were accumulated about 4700-7000 years ago. The ice core of the lithalsa was characterized by δD values from 141.9 to-159.8‰, δO from-19.52 to-21‰, and d within 4.1-17.29‰. Small variations in the isotope composition of the ice-soil material within the lithalsa core point to its formation in an open system with water inflow from outside. The values of δO and δD were much closer to those for recent middle-winter and late-autumn atmospheric precipitation, as well as for riverine water, which pointed to a Holocene age of the ice. Of 235 Mycobacterium tuberculosis isolates from patients who had not received tuberculosis treatment in the Irkutsk oblast and the Sakha Republic (Yakutia), eastern Siberia, 61 (26%) were multidrug resistant. A novel strain, S 256, clustered among these isolates and carried eis-related kanamycin resistance, indicating a need for locally informed diagnosis and treatment strategies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Changes of paleoclimates and paleoenvironments in the Lake Baikal region (including Transbaikalia and Prebaikalia) are traced through the Late Pleistocene-Holocene on the basis of small mammal faunal succession, the deposit structure and pollen assemblages. Paleoenvironments and biota of the two regions became increasingly different since the end of Middle Pleistocene. In Prebaikalia, tundra-steppe (non-analog) faunas appeared and were dominant through the Late Pleistocene, although there was alternation of faunas indicative of colder and warmer (interglacial) conditions. In the Transbaikalian region, faunas typical of arid landscapes were characteristic of both cold and warm periods. They were similar in the species composition, although differing noticeably in proportion of individual taxa. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

66 species of lichens, 9 lichenicolous fungi and 4 non-lichenized saprobic fungi are reported as new to the Berezovye Islands (Leningrad Region, Russia). The updated lichen biota of the archipelago comprises 356 species. Caloplaca maritima, Lecanora compallens, Verrucaria boblensis and Xanthoriicola physciae are reported for the first time for Russia, Lecanora aitema - for European Russia, Lecanora semipallida and Lichenodiplis lecanorae - for North-Western European Russia. Absconditella sphagnorum, Chaenothecopsis vainioana, Lempholemma polyanthes and Opegrapha niveoatra are new to the Leningrad Region, Arthonia byssacea and Lecanora subrugosa - to the Western Leningrad Region. The paper presents the results of a study of groundwater saturation degree in relation to the minerals of kimberlite breccia based on the physicochemical modeling of equilibrium in the brine-kimberlite system. Highly concentrated Ca Cl brines with salinity of up to 400 g/L were discovered through boreholes drilled in the deep horizons of the diamond-bearing deposit of the Udachnaya pipe (Western Yakutia, Russia). The sampling depth of kimberlite was 1034–1145 m and the depth of the water sample from the ore body was 869 m. The pipe rocks are kimberlite breccias that consist of minerals such as serpentine, calcite, chlorite, mica, and quartz. The simulation results, using HydroGeo software, showed that the brines in the deep horizons of the ore body of the Udachnaya pipe remain unsaturated in relation to almost all groups of kimberlite-forming minerals (carbonate, sulfate, chloride, clay, and aluminosilicate) at any temperature and pressure in the reservoir. The nature and degree of equilibrium in the brine-kimberlite system, formed in the course of their long geochemical evolution, were influenced by the processes of both dissolution-precipitation of the chemical components of the system and the dilution of ground brines with low-salinity or fresh waters. • Deep seated highly concentrated brines contact with kimberlites of Udachnaya pipe. • Ca Cl brines are unsaturated to kimberlite-forming minerals at any PT-conditions. • Non-equilibrium state relates to with the evolution of the brine-kimberlite system. Abstract: The results of recent investigations of the Merzliy Yar outcrop in western part of the Todzha depression (Tuva Republic, Russia) allow us to reconstruct the region''s early Holocene history. The ice wedges, cryoturbations and ice-wedge casts are shown by 14C to date from the 10,000–11,000 yr B.P. interval. The stable isotopes (18O and D) of the wedge ice suggest the climatic environment at the time of formation. Winter temperatures in the early Holocene were no higher than those of today, with mean January temperatures of −27 to −31 °C. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: New data on the geochemistry and isotopic composition of chloride brines of the Siberian Platform are presented. The distribution of stable isotopes (2H, 18O, and 37Cl) in brines of the Tunguska, Angara-Lena, western part of the Yakutian and Olenek artesian basins and 87Sr/86Sr in brines of the western part of the Olenek artesian basin was studied in the context of the problem of genesis of highly mineralized groundwaters. Results of the study and comparative analysis of the geochemical and isotopic peculiarities of the Siberian Platform brines conform to the theory of brine formation through the interaction of connate waters with enclosing rocks. The concentrations of chemical elements in tundra soils and plants of ultramafic and acid rocks were investigated in the Polar Urals. The close dependence of the soil concentrations of elements on the granulometric composition of the soils was shown and also the relationship of their chemical composition with that of the underlying bedrock including the predominance of magnesium over calcium and the relatively high concentrations of nickel. The mineral composition of the plants corresponded with the chemistry of the soils on which they grew. A specificity of element absorption by different plant species was detected. The conclusion is made that chemical features of soils on ultramafic rocks unfavourable for some plants species avoiding ultrabasic massifs in the Polar Urals. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
