The goal of the study is to analyze the dynamics of meat production, import, export, availability for human consumption and self-sufficiency rate (SSR) in Romania in the period 2014-2022 based on the data provided by National Institute of Statistics. The empirical data were processed using the growth rate, trend regression equations, determination coefficient, illustrative graphical representations and tabled results for the indicators taken into consideration. The results highlighted that in the studied period, total meat production (in fresh meat equivalent), decreased by 22.5%, from 1,291.9 thousand tons in 2014 to 1,001.6 thousand tons in 2022. But, by meat sort, the situation is different as follows: bovine meat production declined by 8.9% and pork production by - 16.4%, while sheep and goat meat increased by 27.2% and poultry meat by 43.8%. The imported quantities of meat registered an ascending trend from 383.9 thousand tons in 2024 to 628.5% in 2022 (+63.7%). By meat sort, the imported amounts increased by 12.4% for beef, by 200% for pork, by 400% for sheep and goat meat and by 8.1% in case of poultry meat. In 2022, Romania exported 166.8 thousand tons meat meaning by 31.61% more than in 2014. By meat type, the exported amounts increased by 200% for bovine meat, by 86 % in case of sheep and goat meat, by 45.2% in case of poultry meat, but in case of pork declined by 36%. The meat availability for consumption increased by 22.4% from 1,150.6 thousand tons in 2014 to 1,463.3 thousand tons in 2022. For total meat, self-sufficiency rate (SSR) declined from 83.3% in 2014 to 68.4% in 2022. By meat sort, SSR went up for bovine meat accounting for 87.1% in 2022 versus 82.1% in 2014, for pork SSR went down to 45.4% in 2022 versus 70.2% in 2014, SSR for sheep and goat meat was 100% in 2022 versus 106% in 2014 and for poultry meat, SSR increased from 87.5% to 95.2% in the studied period. In 2022, a Romanian consumed in average 74 kg meat, of which 38 kg pork, 27.9 kg poultry meat, 5 kg beef and veal and 2.6 kg sheep and goat meat, much more than in 2014, except bovine meat. As a conclusion, imports sustain pork domestic market as production is not enough to cover the demand, but also in smaller amounts for the other meat types. In Romania, research on enhancing meat production in goats through hybridization is sparse, with studies being conducted primarily at R.D.I.S.G.B. Palas Constanta. This study aims to highlight the benefits of crossbreeding the Carpatina and Boer breeds in terms of all morphoproductive indices. The objective is to develop a Romanian goat breed tailored for meat production, which is well-suited to Romanian conditions. In this regard, the research focuses on analyzing the main morphoproductive indicators of the newly created R1 (75% Boer x 25% Carpatina) and F1 (50% Boer x 50% Carpatina) populations compared to the Carpatina breed (control group). The body weight was 12.87% higher in R1 hybrids (75% Boer x 25% Carpatina) compared to the F1 group (50% Boer x 50% Carpatina) and 17.67% higher compared to Carpatina breed kids. The average daily weight gain in kids during the fattening period was 130.80 g (Carpatina breed) and 185.30 g (R1 hybrids). The difference between the R1 and F1 study groups was 17.85% concerning the average daily gain, and the F1 hybrid group achieved an average daily gain that was 20.21% higher compared to the Carpatina breed kids. The specific energy and protein consumption in the R1 and F1 hybrid groups were lower than in the Carpatina breed kids. The paper highlights the activity of raising sheep and goats in Romania, and the consumption of meat from these categories of animals, in the period 2015-2021, while also sketching the autochthonous ethnographic framework where the economic activity is placed - the tradition records millennial pastoral aspects that are still preserved more or less formally with deep echo in Romanian popular spirituality, reflected in popular beliefs, traditions, customs, folklore. The paper analysed specific indicators of the sheep and goat breeding sector, such as: quantitative fluctuations of the number of sheep and goats; the sheep meat production obtained in slaughter houses; the number of sheep slaughtered in slaughterhouses; the price for sheep meat "per 100 kg live weight" and the average annual consumption, per inhabitant, of sheep and goat meat. The statistical sources for our data are the National Institute of Statistic and Eurostat, as well as other specialized materials. The paper aimed to analyze the dynamics of livestock and milk and meat production in the top five EU countries growing sheep and goats: Spain, Romania, Greece, France and Italy. The empirical data from Eurostat and Faostat for the period 2012-2021 were processed using usual methods and procedures like fixed basis and structural indices, trend regression equation, determination coefficient and points method. The comparison between these five countries pointed out the decline of sheep number in four countries, except Romania and the decrease in goats number in Greece and Spain, but an increase in Romania, France and Italy. Ewe milk production increased in three countries, except Spain where it remained relatively constant and Romania where it declined. Goat milk production raised in three countries, except Greece and Romania. Sheep meat output increased in France and Spain, but in the other countries went down, while goat meat output increased only in Spain, the other four states recording a decline. In the year 2021, these five countries all together counted 46.1 million sheep, representing 76.% of the EU sheep livestock, and also they had 9.4 million goats, meaning 82.1% of the EU goats livestock. In 2020, all these countries produced 2.73 million tonnes sheep milk and 1.87 million tonnes goat milk, accounting for 1.7% and respectively 1.16% in the EU milk output. These counties also contributed by 85% to the EU sheep and goat meat production. This reflects the importance of small ruminants in the EU animal livestock and production. These species have to help the EU for greening agriculture, as they could valorize natural resources from the mountains and less favored areas and also could be grown in organic farming system, assuring jobs and income to the local population, food security and at the same time contributing to the biodiversity preservation and production of renewable energy. Meat is an essential food used by the population to meet food needs, it is an important source of protein and fat. Meat consumption is highly variable worldwide, at least due to the preponderance of certain species in its establishment. The structure of consumption is linked to the customs and traditions of each region. For this reason, the purpose of the paper was to analyze meat consumption in Romania in the period 2014-2018 pointing out its dynamics, structure and annual change. At national level, there is a preponderance - in consumption - of pork, followed by poultry (about 87% of total consumption at national level). It can be seen that the total level of meat consumption was 65.78 kg, a level which was constituted by actual contributions of: 0.58 kg - other types of meat, 2.26 kg - sheep and goat meat, 5.62 kg - beef, 23.80 kg - poultry and 33.52 kg - pork. The consumption of edible organs was 3.10 kg (4.71% of the total consumption). There is a need to improve the structure of total meat consumption by increasing the share of beef and other meats. Meat processing is an important sector of the food industry, which has a special impact on increasing the competitiveness of the national economy, but also on ensuring the food security of Romania. The tradition of raising animals and the processing of agri-food raw materials can ensure the need for raw materials, satisfying the internal consumption, but also making income for the meat processing company in Romania. The meat market, at national level, is in deficit, being dependent on meat imports, while on the export live animals are valued, with a low added value. The purpose of this paper is to highlight the current situation in the meat processing sector in terms of production, consumption per capita and meat imports and exports, comparing with the number of meat processing units. The study highlights the decrease in domestic meat production of poultry, pigs and cattle, except for the production of sheep and goats that is increasing, between 2015 and 2017, where in beef production decreased by 18.99%, pork production decreased by 3.85%, poultry meat production decreased by 4.58%, and in sheep and goat meat production increased by 5.86%. Imports of meat from the analyzed species are increasing, also the consumption of meat per capita is increasing, but also the companies in the field of meat processing are increasing.
