Background: Anemia represents the decrease in the amount of hemoglobin within red blood cells, which transport the oxygen necessary for various metabolic processes and ensure the optimal functioning of all organs. Some types of anemia can be prevented through a varied and healthy diet. Demanding study programs and stressful situations often lead medical students to adopt an unhealthy lifestyle and make inadequate dietary choices, thereby inducing anemia. Objective: The objective of this study was to obtain data regarding the habits, dietary choices, and diets of Medical students at UMFST University in Târgu Mureş, in order to determine the correlation between diet and anemia, as well as to promote healthy lifestyle. Material and methods: Material and Method: 81 medical students were recruited, of which 27% were General Nursing students, 37% were General Medicine students, and 36% were Nutrition and Dietetics students. A questionnaire consisting of 36 questions regarding lifestyle, diet, food choices, and food combination methods was used, distributed online through the Google Forms platform. Prior to completing the questionnaires, participants were asked to provide consent for completing the surveys while ensuring their anonymity. Students with forms of anemia other than iron-deficiency anemia were excluded from the study. Results : The results indicate a correlation between the students' diet (food sources, frequency, or quantity of consumption) and the parameter of serum iron levels, with statistically significant values obtained, distributed according to the students' specialization and corresponding study program. Conclusions: Conclusions: These results suggest that diet is the influencing factor in the occurrence of anemia (in the absence of a genetic or metabolic cause), and that an adequate diet can support an optimal state of health. The Internet has become an important source of overall health information and seems to be the second common source of information used by patients in the process of decision-making before breast surgery. The goal of this study was to monitor Romanian breast cancer websites and their quality over a period of 5 years. We evaluated a sample of 20 websites selected from Google's first search results pages using specific rating scores for e-health quality, completeness, accuracy, and potential risk, in 2011 and 2016, respectively. Only 15 (75%) of the websites in the 2011 sample were accessible in 2016 and only two (10%) retained real-life visibility (Google PageRank < 20). The mean quality scores at baseline (2011) and follow-up (2016), respectively, were as follows: e-health quality 3.80 vs. 4.05; completeness 4.23 vs. 5.43; accuracy 5.74 vs. 6.35; and potential risk score 7.60 vs. 7.30. All quality scores were low or, at best, modest and did not improve significantly over the 5-year period. The results of the study draw attention to the need for programs aiming to improve the ability of breast cancer patients to screen the online health resources and to better regulate the medical Internet to safeguard the best interest of health information seekers. Aim: Romania ranks first in Europe in terms of mortality from cervical cancer, recording 6.3 times more deaths than the mean in EU countries. Although vaccination campaigns were launched by health officials in Romania, the acceptance rate remained insignificant and programmes were discontinued. A successful vaccination programme requires a high rate of acceptance and accurate information for health professionals and parents. The aim of the study was to evaluate the level of parental knowledge about human papilomavirus (HPV) infection and HPV vaccination including the information obtained from general practitioners and identification of barriers in implementing a vaccination strategy. Methods: We performed a cross-sectional study using a self-administered questionnaire for the parents of pupils in grades 5-8, in three randomly selected secondary schools in Tîrgu Mureş, Romania. Results: We surveyed 918 parents. Of the respondents, 85.8% have heard of HPV infection. Most reported an average level of knowledge about HPV infection and HPV vaccination. The two main sources of information were specialized healthcare professionals (42.8% for HPV infection, 39.1% for HPV vaccination) and the Internet browsing (42.3% and 42.9%, respectively). Based on current knowledge, only one third of parents would have their child vaccinated against HPV infection. According to most parents surveyed, the main reasons for not wanting to have their child vaccinated is the fear of side effects; the vaccine is new and insufficiently studied; or parents do not know details about the vaccine. Conclusions: The parents showed the average level of knowledge about HPV infection and HPV vaccination. The implementation of an effective programme to increase the acceptance rate of HPV vaccination requires educational strategies aimed at involving parents and their children and supported by general practitioners and public health professionals. SALT content of food ,CONVENIENCE foods ,PUBLIC health ,HYPERTENSION risk factors ,HAMBURGERS ,MAYONNAISE ,FOOD industry ,COOKING - Abstract
Salt intake is an important public health issue in the contemporary world, since salt overconsumption is a major risk factor for high blood pressure. Some of the important sources of salt are fast food products, generally over salted in order to be desirable for the consumer. In the present study we evaluated salt levels in some very popular fast food dishes in Romania, in 2011. Local public health authorities gathered randomly 5 samples per product (shaorma, burger, pizza) in their county. Samples of sauces were also gathered, as important components of fast food dishes (mayonnaise, ketchup, other). Salt levels were measured in local laboratories. Data was collected by the National Institute of Public Health. Results showed considerable differences between samples, with minimal values under 1 % salt and maximal values of 1.9% (burgers, Arad; pizza, Olt). Differences were present not only in on-spot produced dishes, but also in ready-to-eat sauces, where some producers use very high quantities of salt. The average values of salt concentrations were: 1.5% for pizza, 1.33 % for shaonna, burgers and mayonnaise, 1.87% for ketchup and 1.4% for other sauces. Figures found are over the average values for home-made dishes, so efforts need to be made to determine fast food business operators to add less salt and to enhance taste by substituting it with other seasonings like herbs and spices. Food reformulation initiatives, although very difficult to implement in the gastronomy! fast food sector, may achieve significant results in tackling salt intake via fast food products and ready-to-eat sauces and dressings. CONTAMINATION of drinking water , *GROUNDWATER quality , *WATER quality monitoring , *FLUORIDES , *IODINE , *IRON , *COLORIMETRIC analysis - Abstract
Aim: To compare the underground drinking water mineral composition in fluoride, iodine and iron from different sources, with variable locations in Romania. Methods: It was a prospective laboratory study based on Hanna Instruments C99 colourimeter, that tested the mineral parameters levels in 70 water samples from several underground water supply sources from 10 different romanian counties. Results: Our data shows low concentrations of fluoride and iodine in underground water sources all over our country, especially Ardeal teritory, with impact on population health status with risk of exposure by deficiency. In Brasov we encountered high iron levels and in Salaj the highest fluoride and nitrates concentrations and increased water hardness were recorded. Conclusion: We must stress upon the importance of monitoring water supplies, to evaluate both the quality parameters and mineral composition, in order to estimate the influence on the health status of the consumer population in the long run. PHYSIOLOGICAL effects of salt ,FOOD preservation ,PROCESSED foods ,PUBLIC health - Abstract
Salt is the oldest preservative used for food. But the excessive consume of salt is at the origin of blood hypertension, a problem responsible for a huge number of human diseases and deaths. As a consequence, the level of salt added in processed food has to diminish progressively. At the end of 2009, the Public Health Authorities from 29 Romanian counties reported results from the salt analysis of 1321 samples of different foods. The highest levels of salt were found in "telemea" cheese and the significant salt content in other widely consumed food underlined the necessity for a joined effort in order to bring down salt and to comply with the World Health Organization target regarding the salt intake (5g/day), with a special accent put on the reformulation of processed food. Background: Each country has specific social, cultural, and economic characteristics regarding the motivations for improving health. The aim of this study was to evaluate demographic characteristics, anthropometric data, and elements related to food behavior and health, as well as Romanians' motivations towards healthy eating. Methods: This is a descriptive cross-sectional questionnaire based study enrolling 751 Romanian participants, which was carried out in in 2017–2018. Results: We obtained a positive correlation between age and Body Mass Index, and this was maintained also when we analyzed the two genders separately, being, however, even stronger for women. The number of hours/day spent watching TV or in front of the computer was positively correlated with both age and BMI. In general, with aging, there is an increasing concern regarding the practice of a healthy diet. The higher education level was significantly associated with healthier choices. Conclusions: The study of the three dietary dimensions, food properties, health attitudes, and dietary behavior, vis-à-vis various disorders revealed that the group most concerned of their diet was those who suffered from cardiovascular disorders. BODY mass index , *SEDENTARY behavior , *TEENAGERS , *RISK-taking behavior , *COLLECTIVE behavior - Abstract
Objective: The study aims to analyze obesogenic behavioral patterns of adolescents living in Mureş County, Romania, as well as to establish a relationship between these behaviors and their Body Mass Index (BMI), in an attempt to provide effective prevention strategies for obesity. Material and Methods: 153 students between 9th to 12th grade, aged between 14 and 19 years old, from the Vocational and Art Highschool of Târgu Mureş were included in the study. All the candidates filled out an evaluation questionnaire of lifestyle and risky behaviors. The analyzed data were sex, age, residence, BMI and risky eating behavior defined as the consumption of carbohydrates (bread, potatoes, sweets), sodas, junk food, alcohol (wine, distilled beverages, beer), beer separately, level of physical activity (school and extra-school sports activities), sedentary behaviors (=2 hours/day in front of a screen: personal computer-PC and television-TV), and spending =2 hours/day separately on the PC and on the TV. Results: A statistically significant association was observed between BMI and consumption of fast-food, tobacco, beer, sedentary behavior and spending =2 hours/day in front of the PC. Moreover, there was a statistically significant difference between the BMI values of adolescents presenting all studied risk behaviors compared to those who did not. Conclusions: Obesity among adolescents from Mure? County is influenced by lifestyle choices like fast-food, tobacco, beer, sedentary behavior and spending =2 hours/day in front of the PC. PET owners ,ANIMAL behavior therapy ,DIABETES ,PEOPLE with diabetes - Abstract
Diabetes is a disease with a growing frequency in the contemporary world. Optimal outcomes in diabetes require daily self-management and compliance to a sometimes complicated scheme of treatment. (Collins et al, 2009). Since animal's companionship moderates the effects of stress, subjective health complains and social interaction on mood componeuts, having a pet might ease the process of coping with diabetes and its treatment requirements. Former studies have showen that owning a pet generally ameliorates the overall quality of life in people with chronic diseases. (Allen et al, 2002; Edwards et al, 2002; Johnson et al, 2003; Heady, 2004, Wong, 2005). In this present cross sectional study, we followed self management and treatment adherence, and their connections with the presence of a pet in a household, in a representative sample of 477 diabetics, in evidence of the ambulatory services of two major hospitals from Bucharest, Romania, in 2011. From the sample, 39% were pet owners, from which 95% had cats and dogs. Significantly more women than men declared having pets and more typel diabetics had pets, than type 2. Average age for pet owners was 52.2, versus 54.25 years, for non owners. The analysis showed a statistically significant correlation between having a pet and respecting the medicamentous treatment of diabetes, even after correcting for age, gender, education, length of the disease and type of diabetes (Spearman Rho= .205, sig (2 tailed)=011) . No links have been found between the body mass index, blood pressure values, fear of hypoglycemia, presence of depression on one hand, and having a pet, on the other. In conclusion, the study offers some useful data that can be a starting point for further investigation, since pet owning seems to influence positively healthy habits even for diabetic patients [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim: Most pregnant women can achieve their caloric and nutritional needs by careful food choices during pregnancy, but there are fairly common situations when pregnant women develop anaemia, which needs to be managed properly to avoid maternal-foetal complications. The main objective of the study was to identify the nutritional factors favoring the occurrence of iron deficiency anaemia in pregnant women. Methods: Data collection for the cross-sectional study was carried out using a questionnaire that provided information on nutrition and risk factors during pregnancy in a group of patients from Suceava. The questionnaire was given to pregnant women admitted to the Emergency County Hospital „Sfântul Ioan cel Nou" Suceava, Romania, between March and May 2017. Results: The anaemia occured in 46.3% of pregnant women. Although 22.2% of pregnant women received oral iron supplementation, effects on anaemia correction were not observed (p=0.02). We found that weight status did not influence anaemic status (p=0.51), and the presence of anaemia in pregnancy was independent of risk factors for pregnancy (smoking, p=0.05; alcohol consumption, p=0.66), iron absorption inhibitors in the diet (coffee, p=0.33; tea, p=0.53), water intake (p=0.52) or night eating (p=0.27). Conclusions: The results of dietary survey showed no direct link between the prevalence of anaemia and nutritional factors. Lower pre-pregnancy BMI was not associated with higher risk of iron deficiency anaemia, and daily iron supplementation during pregnancy did not meet the needs to counteract the anaemic syndrome. Nutrition education is particularly important for the prophylaxis of iron deficiency anaemia in pregnant women. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Anorexia nervosa is a psychiatric disorder with an unknown etiology that is characterized by an individual's extreme concern for self-image and body weight, severe dieting, and weight loss, all this while denying the severity of their low body weight. According to the statistics, 1 in 100 adolescents struggle with anorexia nervosa and it's the third most common chronic illness diagnosed amongst them. Case Report: The case of a 16-year-old teen girl is being presented, who was brought to the dietitian to seek help, by her mother, after previously being admitted to the hospital and diagnosed with anorexia nervosa. Her first InBody assessment showed a total of 45kg body weight, with a BMI of 15.6 and 3.1kg of body fat mass, which was most concerning. She also presented with a lack of energy, amenorrhoea, constipation, stomach pain, an unhealthy relationship with food, and the fear of gaining more weight. Discussions : The main goal of the nutritional intervention was the restoration of a healthy body fat mass while building a better relationship with food and body image. This is an ongoing collaboration that started in December 2023, with 1 on 1 individualized assistance with the patient, every two weeks. We focused on introducing new foods, nutritional education, and daily monitoring with the help of a food diary and after a few months the patient reached a total body weight of 53.2kg, with a BMI of 18.4 and 9kg of body fat mass. It's important to mention that as dietitians we were constantly communicating with the patient's doctor, therapist as well as family. After a few months, the patient's health was significantly restored, and her relationship with food and body image was considerably improved, thanks to a multidisciplinary approach. Conclusions: This case study exemplifies the critical role of nutritional intervention alongside psychological and medical support for teens with eating disorders. The cooperation between the dietitian, medical specialists, psychologist, and the patient's family is essential for the patient's well-being but it doesn't assure linear progress. Background and Aim: Smoking before, during and after pregnancy leads to detrimental outcomes on maternal and foetal health and represents an important public health issue. This study aims to evaluate the prevalence and correlates of smoking before and during pregnancy in a sample of Romanian women. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among mothers (N=1,278) in three maternity hospitals in Tirgu-Mures, Romania, immediately after childbirth, in 2014. We evaluated the prevalence of smoking before and during pregnancy and used binary logistic regression to assess the influence of socio-demographics and other health behaviour factors in three groups of women: non-smoking pregnant women, women who continued smoking during pregnancy, and smokers who quit during pregnancy. Results: 30% of the interviewed mothers were smokers prior to pregnancy, of whom 43.3% continued smoking during pregnancy. Women with a family income of less than 100 Euro/month (OR=3.01, 95% CI: 1.02-8.83) and those who were unemployed (OR=13.2, 95% CI: 3.90-44.79) had increased odds of continued smoking versus quitting during pregancy in multivariable analyses. Women who continued smoking during pregnancy were also more likley to be of lower socioeconomic status than never smokers (OR=14.1, 95% CI: 4.97-39.6).Conclusions: A high percentage of women of reproductive age smoke and continue to smoke despite their knowledge about risks of smoking during pregnancy. Smoking prior to and during pregnancy is predominantly associated with lower socioeconomic status. Women with limited economic means should be a high priority target group for smoking cessation interventions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

- Abstract
Introduction and aim: With the rising consumer's health awareness, especially towards patients with celiac disease, gluten has become a food ingredient to be avoided by many people expecting various positive health effects. The strict adherence of diet requires serious abandonments and lifestyle changes that affect directly their quality of life. The aim of the present study was to recognise the quality of life of Hungarian and Romanian consumers following a gluten-free diet as well as to explore the negative effects on them. Method: An online questionnaire survey was conducted upon 1155 Hungarian and Romanian respondents. Results: For gluten-free consumers, self-control was relatively easy to overcome, but their lifestyle was negatively affected by social events and dining out. In addition, diet adherence was a burden from both lifestyle and financial point of view. For Hungarian consumers, external factors such as price, choice, taste and availability of products had become a major obstacle, while Romanian ones were more likely to be affected by internal factors (product information, diet knowledge, lifestyle, self-control). Mandatory labelling of substances and products causing allergies and intolerances has achieved its purpose, as it has made it easier for consumers on diet to choose food and increased their confidence. Conclusions: The study points out that dieters' quality of life can be enhanced not only by general actions (improving the preparedness of out-of-home meal services and rationalising the price of products), but also through country-specific community intervention. Unlabelled: We evaluated the main aspects of the management of emergency cases, hospitalized in Romania in 2007, by following the frequency of main diagnosis, their distribution by place and hospital and hospital indicators., Material and Method: We collected our data from the Insurance Houses and National Institute of Statistics., Results: Emergency cases represented in 2007 half of total cases hospitalized in Romania. Women are more frequent hospitalized then man or children. The Romanian South-East area had the highest frequency of emergency cases hospitalized. From all types of deceased cases, the emergency cases had the highest frequency. In emergency, the main category of diagnosis by frequency is "pregnancy, birth and recently given birth", much higher than non-emergency cases registered, also at the Obstretics-Gynecology and Emergency Hospitals. The medium period of days hospitalized for emergency cases was one week time. Most of the emergency cases are healed comparing to non-emergency ones., Conclusions: The main problem of hospitals in Romania is related to health services financing, costs for health care are still growing but also did the quality of health services and number of cases coming in emergency rooms.

- Abstract
Aim: We studied tuberculosis drug-resistance cases related to risk factors involved, in Mureş district., Methods: We used clinical files of 91 patients with tuberculosis drug resistance from 2006 at all, diagnosed during 2002-2006 at the Ambulatory department of Tuberculosis Clinic in Tg. Mureş town and cities nearby. RESULTS. Mycobacterium drug resistance is more frequent at men (96.8%), because of multiple tuberculosis risk factors involved, also is more frequent in rural areas (52.8%) because of low access to medical services. Drug resistance rate have a direct growing related to number of treatments made before, at patients with therapeutic failure and chronic cases. In our study, first year was dominated by single drug resistance to NIH, with a decrease in 2004 and no cases in 2006; and also multi-drug resistance was placed on the first place by frequency in 2006., Conclusions: We sustain the needs to intensify the general efforts on tuberculosis early diagnosis, also to increase the medical education on all levels, government financial support and trained staff a good monitoring program during tuberculosis evolution in specific centers of diagnostic and treatment of multi-drug resistance cases in Mureş district.
