Burns in neonates is a unique pathology that poses management challenges, as, besides treating the burn injury, the medical team needs to be familiar with the unique physiology of the newborn. This study aimed to review our center's experience with the management of neonatal burns. A 7-year retrospective study of neonatal burns managed at a tertiary national referral unit in Bucharest, Romania, was performed. Patients were divided into two groups, preterm and term, based on gestational age. Collected data included demographics, treatment, complications and follow-up. Our center managed 13 neonates with burns (5 term and 8 preterm), with a mean age at injury of 8.6 days. All neonatal burns were thermal injuries. For preterm babies, all burns were iatrogenic, consisting of victims of a fire in a Maternity Hospital, while for the term group only one was iatrogenic. Burns were more extensive in the premature group (65% vs. 20% mean TBSA, p=0.0001). All premature patients had associated inhalation injuries. Surgical treatment was indicated for two term patients. Survival rate was 77% and was negatively influenced by inhalation injury, burn shock and TBSA >50%. In conclusion, the majority of hospitalized neonatal burns in Romania were the result of a fire disaster secondary to an infrastructure deficiency. Their management is complex, posing specific challenges, and needs to be led by a multidisciplinary team that can ensure an individualized continuum of acute burn care and recovery. Torque teno virus (TTV) is highly prevalent, but little is known about its circulation in humans. Here, we investigated the geographical distribution and phylogeny of TTV in Romania. A fragment of TTV untranslated region B was sequenced in samples from volunteers across the country. Additional sequences from dialyzed patients were also included in the study. Phylogenetic analysis showed that more than 80% of Romanian sequences clustered with isolates assigned to the species Torque teno virus 1 and Torque teno virus 3 (former genogroup 1), and this analysis discriminated between isolates from the North-East and West regions. Further studies assessing the pathogenic potential of TTV isolates should employ analysis based on genomic regions with phylogenetic resolution below the species level., (© 2022. The number of serological assays for SARS-CoV-2 has skyrocketed in the past year. Concerns have been raised regarding their performance characteristics, depending on the disease severity and the time of the analysis post-symptom onset (PSO). Thus, independent validations using an unbiased sample selection are required for meaningful serology data interpretation. We aimed to assess the clinical performance of six commercially available assays, the seroconversion, and the dynamics of the humoral response to SARS-CoV-2 infection. The study included 528 serum samples from 156 patients with follow-up visits up to six months PSO and 161 serum samples from healthy people. The IgG/total antibodies positive percentage increased and remained above 95% after six months when chemiluminescent immunoassay (CLIA) IgG antiS1/S2 and electro-chemiluminescent assay (ECLIA) total antiNP were used. At early time points PSO, chemiluminescent microparticle immunoassay (CMIA) IgM antiS achieved the best sensitivity. IgM and IgG appear simultaneously in most circumstances, and when performed in parallel the sensitivity increases. The severe and the moderate clinical forms were significantly associated with higher seropositivity percentage and antibody levels. High specificity was found in all evaluated assays, but the sensitivity was variable depending on the time PSO, severity of disease, detection method and targeted antigen.

Bioremediation is a very interesting alternative for restoring the oil-polluted ecosystems. Many studies concerning the possibility of using microorganisms (bacteria and yeasts) in the degradation of oil compounds have as starting point the isolation and taxonomical identification of new species and strains with degradative abilities. Our study focusses on the preliminary classification of five yeast strains (D1, D2, D3, D4 and D6) isolated from oil-polluted environments. The strains were characterized by conventional taxonomical techniques: microscopical and macroscopical appearance, fermentation abilities, assimilation of various carbon or nitrogen compounds, growth under stress conditions (non-permissive temperatures, high glucose concentration) and urea degradation. According to these tests, D1, D2 and D4 showed great similarity to Rhodotorula glutinis, D3 to Candida parapsilosis and D6 to Candida tropicalis. Further supplementary tests were performed in order to establish their ability to degrade hydrocarbons, by observing growth in media with n-alkanes (n-decane, n-dodecane, n-tetradecane, n-hexadecane). Thus, D1, D2 and D4 were the best alkane-consuming strains, presenting possible similar degrading abilities and pathways, which correlates well to our identification as Rhodotorula strains. For D3 and D6 the growth was not so spectacular as for D1, D2 and D4, but continuous along the entire experiment. The resemblance between the curves profiles confirms the idea that both belong to the same genus, Candida.
