(1) Background: Cervical cancer is a significant health concern, with the main cause being persistent infection with high-risk Human Papillomavirus (hrHPV). There is still no evidence for why viral persistence occurs in some women, but recent studies have revealed the interplay between cervical microbiota and hrHPV. This research aimed to characterize the cervicovaginal microbiota in cervical lesion progression and HPV infection status. (2) Methods: This study included 85 cervical specimens from women from the north-eastern region of Romania. DNA was isolated from cervical secretion for HPV genotyping and 16S ribosomal RNA gene NGS sequencing. (3) Results: Our study revealed a distinct pattern within the studied group when considering Lactobacillus species, which differs from findings reported in other populations. Specifically, the presence of Lactobacillus iners coupled with the absence of Lactobacillus crispatus alongside Atopobium spp., Prevotella spp., and Gardnerella spp. could serve as defining factors for severe cervical lesions. The results also showed a significant association between microbiota diversity, HPV infection, and cervical lesion progression. (4) Conclusions: As the microbiota profile seems to vary among different populations and individuals, a deeper comprehension of its composition has the potential to develop personalized detection and treatment approaches for cervical dysplasia and cancer. Fluoride (F) ions actively participate in the dental enamel remineralisation process and inhibit the activity of cariogenic bacteria of the oral biofilm. However, increased systemic intake of F during critical periods of amelogenesis can lead to dental fluorosis (DF). The necessity of our study stemmed from the growing consumption of bottled water, as water is one of the primary sources of F in humans, and labelling F concentration is optional. Our aim was to evaluate the F concentration in bottled natural mineral or spring still waters available on the market in Iasi, Romania. We purchased forty different brands of still bottled water from the major grocery stores and tested them using an ion-selective electrode method. The reliability of the data was assessed by the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), while the differences between the obtained and labelled F values were examined using a paired samples t-test. The tested F levels ranged between 0.0338 and 4.6262 milligrams per litter (mg/L). The majority of the samples, around 85% recorded F values ranging from 0.232 to 0.0338 mg/L, offering slight or no benefit in caries prevention. Another 10% of the samples had F values ranging between 0.3 and 0.4 mg/L and could provide a dental health benefit. A percentage of 5% of the tested samples recorded F levels above the optimal level of 0.7 mg/L, as set by the American Dental Association (ADA) and the United States Department of Health and Human Services (U.S. HHS). This elevated F concentration poses a potential risk for DF in infants and toddlers, indicating that regular consumption of these samples may be unsafe. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

As water is essential to life and is an indispensable resource for ecosystems and their services and for nearly all human activities, the goal of this research was to evaluate the surface water quality of the Danube as it passes through the Romania–Serbia border in the nature reservations Djerdap and Iron Gate. The study aimed to assess the oxygen regime, nutrients and heavy metals contamination of the surface waters of the Danube on a length of about 240 km, between Bazias and Iron Gate II. Reference sampling and analytical methods (UV-VIS and AAS) were deployed to reach this goal. In addition, sediments were analyzed through back scattered SEM-EDAX for the elemental analysis of the sediment surface. Results obtained show a low environmental impact of heavy metals, while the Danube's oxygen regime is under stress due to nutrients' (nitrites and orthophosphates) significant concentration in the Danube surface water in the analyzed sector. Our approach can be applied to other water bodies in the area, to increase available scientific data together with societal awareness of the Danube's environmental risks. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study is a theoretical analysis of public health indicators in Romanian community psychiatry. It aims to highlight the current needs and the role of social workers for highly vulnerable groups. The research method consists of a theoretical analysis of psychiatric health indicators in Romania, over two decades, compared to the European situation. The results conclude the necessity for a unitary European policy in psychiatry. They also show an increased need for social support. The quality and potential health risk of drinking waters in Medias, a town near a former non-ferrous ore smelter in Romania, was assessed using the drinking water quality index (DWQI), hazard quotient (HQ) and total hazard quotient (THQ). A total of 29 water samples collected from 26 wells and 3 springs used as drinking water sources, located in near proximity to agricultural, industrial or household contamination sources, were characterized. The obtained results indicated high NO2−, NO3−, Cd and Mn levels that exceeded the corresponding maximum allowable concentrations. According to the DWQI values, only 10% of water sources have acceptable quality, while 21% are threatened, and 69% have poor- quality. The health risk assessment suggested a high risk for NO3− for more than 72% of the drinking waters HQNO3− > 1.0 but no risk for metals and NO2− (HQmetals< 1.0; HQNO2−< 1.0). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Barley (Hordeum vulgare), unlike other cereals, is distinguished by a wider geographical spread, being the only cereal that reaches 70 degrees North altitude. Barley provides the human body a wide range of nutrients: vitamins (B1, B2, B3, B6), minerals (selenium, manganese, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, zinc, copper) and dietary fibre. These qualities as well as many others make this crop constantly in the structure of crops. That is why, the research aimed at improving the quality of this plant is constantly evolving. Study of the behaviour in crop was analyzed, under the same technological and land and climate conditions, four varieties of Hanzi, Alora, Amorosa and Finola barley. The research was carried out during the year 2018, in the Southeastern part of the Romanian Plain. After harvest, determinations were made regarding the protein content, hectolitre weight, MMB and efficiency per hectare for each variety. The best efficiency was made by Hanzi variety that exceeded the production of the control variety by 30%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper we describe the evaluation of various parameters in establishing their prognostic value of the water quality in the water distribution system. Our application was validated using real data from the actual status of distribution networks in Romania. The study was performed on percentages of the equipment deficits, age equipment and incorrect sample and the statistical analysis was based on logistic regression. We concluded by using mathematical and statistical methods, that an accurate age equipment is one of the most important and essential information in the analysis report. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The use of biological cement with provisory closed percutaneous Kirschner wire (K-wire) fixation enabled the treatment of 12 patients with fractures. Within the period November 2010-February 2011, we have treated at Saint Pantelimon Emergency Orthopaedics Clinic 12 patients using this specific method, namely: 8 humeral fractures, 1 distal radial fracture, 1 distal radial fracture associated with carpal scaphoid fracture, 1 ankle fracture, and a delayed union of distal tibial fracture. In the specialized literature, the use of bone substitutes or of biological bone cement has never been described in the treatment of fractures without the opening of the fracture site. Some bone fillers for bone defects have been injected before, together with osteosynthesis means, plates and screws, respectively. The assessment of the results has to take into account the consolidation range of each type of fracture, and the cast fixation must be extended accordingly. The recovery shall depend upon the fracture's callus biology, the fracture's type and location as well as the age of the patient. We evaluate the results after clinical and radiological criteria. Consolidation was achieved in all cases. We will present also the complications related to first use of this new method. The use of Kryptonite-X injected under fluoroscopic control in the conservative treatment of the fractures is a novelty. The aim of the research conducted in the greenhouse of UASVM, Cluj-Napoca, was to establish the stolonization and tuberization capacity of the seed potato by keeping them in optimum conditions (normally sprauted seed potatoes) and in inappropriate ones (by breaking the sprouts twice until the planting). This research was conducted on the Christian potato variety, the seed potato being of two biological categories: Base Super elite class and certified class B. Hence, the growth dynamics of the plants was determined at 20 and 45 days from plant emergence. Potato tuberization is presented for the two intervals and the total tuber number after 45 days since emergence is considered to be the total tuber number per plant. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The paper analyse the economic rationality of SMEs (Small and medium size enterprises) trough some pertinent indicators that revels the importance of SME for the employment market and for the entire economy. Despite their adaptability these entities have faced always different problems and the most noticeable has been the need of capital infusion. The paper proposes a new type of capital infusion in Romania: the private equity investment. We explore the venture investment mechanism and its implications at economic level for the SME. To identify the economic impact of venture capital, European preliminary figures provided by EVCA (European Venture Capital Association) will be analysed to determine if private equity capital represents a solution for capital infusion in SMEs. The sugar content in apple fruit differs depending on numerous factors: variety, culture technology, pedo-climatic conditions, fruit position in the tree crown etc. The influence of the cultivar and fruit exposition in the tree crown upon their sugar content, as well as upon some morphological traits of the fruit (weight, diameter and volume) at the Fruit Research Station Cluj, Romania were studied. Among the 12 analysed cultivars, the highest sugar content was recorded in 'Golden Delicious' (16.7°Bx) and 'Red Delicious' (15.8°Bx), regardless of the fruit exposition in the tree crown. At the other extreme are found the cultivars 'Pioneer' and 'Prima', in which the sugar content was of 12.6 and 13 .O°Bx. In most cultivars, the, fruit exposed southward in the tree crown have 'presented a lower sugar content than those exposed in the northern side. The difference is explained by the fact that, while the fruit advance towards the maturation process, due to the slightly more raised temperature (sunstroke), the respiration process intensifies, which determines the oxidation of a greater number of carbohydrates and, implicitly, the reduction of the sugar content. There were identified both phenotypic and genotypic negative correlations between the sugar content and fruit traits: weight, diameter, height and volume. Research is useful in the knowledge of the way in which fruit exposition influences the accumulation of sugar in the fruit, both for the producers and the consumers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Vitiligo has been associated with the host's genetic profile, metabolic abnormality and immunostatus. The purpose of this study was to investigate the association of vitiligo with autoimmune diseases for 31 out of 39 subjects with vitiligo and their first-degree relatives living in a small Caucasian inbred rural community. They were compared with healthy individuals. A 2.28% prevalence of vitiligo was calculated and the presence of consanguine marriages (72.3%) was noted for this community. Our results indicate an increased prevalence of thyroidopathies, diabetes mellitus and rheumatoid arthritis in families with vitiligo. We also show that the Apa-I polymorphism of the vitamin D receptor gene is associated with vitiligo. This is the first study of its kind performed in Romania suggesting that the vitamin D receptor gene might play a role in the aetiopathogenesis of skin depigmentation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Nine single nucleotide (SNP) or indel binary polymorphisms were used to determine the frequencies and phylogenetic relationships of 12Y chromosomal haplogroups in 289 males from Romania and the Republic of Moldova. Our data indicated a low but not null rate of the homoplasic appearance of the DYZ3 (-) allelic state. All other markers confirmed the previously proposed phylogeny. Based on the affinities between populations in terms of haplogroup frequencies, this work identified the geographical region of the Carpathians as a break point in the gene geography of Eastern Central Europe, providing a finer definition of one of the possible sharp genetic changes between Western and Eastern Europe.
