INDICATORS & test-papers ,NITRITES ,WATER springs ,ELECTRIC conductivity ,STATISTICAL correlation ,PLANT protection - Abstract
This study aimed to verify the linear associations between the physical, chemical and microbiological variables of spring water. The research was developed from two seasons of spring water sample collections and evaluated physical–chemical variables such as temperature, pH, turbidity, electrical conductivity, total alkalinity, total hardness, total ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, true and apparent colors, total phosphorus, fluoride and total iron, and microbiological variables—total coliforms and Escherichia coli. The variables' total alkalinity, total hardness, and electrical conductivity have a strong positive correlation among them (r > 0.50), which is similar to what occurs with the variables' turbidity, apparent color, true color, and total iron, between nitrite and total iron, and between the turbidity and total coliforms. These correlations occur as a function of the interaction that water has with the soil and the compounds found, thus altering the quality. The springs do not have masonry protection, they only have plant protection. Moreover, this water is exposed and accessible to animals in these areas. In addition, the result of the surface and sub-surface flow effect of spring water must be considered. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: This paper presents an empirical contribution to the literature on cluster evolution, highlighting the decline phase. The analysis focuses on the footwear sector in Rio Grande do Sul (RS) state, in southern Brazil, where an important footwear cluster is located, which was once considered one of the world's largest footwear clusters. The purpose of this study is to analyse the transformation of this footwear industrial sector since the beginning of the 2000s using several sectoral statistics. Design/methodology/approach: This paper presents an empirical and longitudinal study that comprises the sourcing of 20 years of secondary data, based on official sources. The main data analysed were production, price, industrial structure, labour market and foreign market. Findings: The main results indicated a significant reduction in production, export and employment. In addition, a precarization of the labour market was observed, with lower wage levels, even with an increase in the formal qualification of labour over time. The finding is that the RS footwear sector underwent a huge structural change and lost the status of a worldwide supercluster. This decline occurred due to two central factors: an external shock related to China's entry into the international and Brazilian domestic markets, accompanied by a slowdown in the Brazilian economy since 2015; and the difficulty of local firms responding to the new challenges. Research limitations/implications: Synthesizing the findings, it is understood that this paper contributes to registering the trajectory of decline over time of the footwear sector in RS. In this sector, the Sinos Valley cluster is located, historically known as a footwear producing and exporting supercluster. This cluster loses the characteristic of a "supercluster", but it still remains an important footwear cluster in Brazil. Therefore, this study reinforces the existence of fragilities already pointed out by the literature in Schimtz (1999) and, more recently, in Schmidt (2020). The need to address a set of fragilities remains current, both at the micro- and meso-levels. This is key to reversing the decline trajectory of the cluster and the sector. Moreover, as recent studies on clusters point out, one still must think about the impact of another ongoing paradigmatic transformation concerning the use and development of Industry 4.0 technologies. Thus, the central challenge is to think about and implement new public and private policies. The historical, economic and social relevance of the sector and the cluster demand efforts to reverse the decline. Originality/value: This study focuses to contribute to the discussion about the decline of the footwear production in the region by analysing secondary data regarding the industrial sector. This is an analysis at the meso-level (industry). The authors understand that the originality of the research lies in the longitudinal analysis for a recent period (past 20 years) that captures the greatest current crisis experienced by the region. A complex concept, absorptive capacity was first introduced by Cohen and Levinthal (1989, 1990) and is connected to the Penrose theory of growth of firms ([1959] 2009) as it is related to a variety of firms' internal resources and external aspects of their environment, such as sources of knowledge. Considering firms that interact with universities in the search for external knowledge, this paper aims to identify the necessary and sufficient conditions of these firms to reach certain levels of absorptive capacity. We conducted a survey of firms that interacted with engineering research groups at universities in the state of Rio Grande do Sul (Brazil). We applied the Fuzzy Sets Comparative Qualitative Analysis. The main results were: (1) the necessary and sufficient conditions for high-level absorptive capacity are a combination of high acquisition and assimilation and medium transformation and exploitation; (2) the necessary and sufficient conditions for medium or non-high absorptive capacity are obtained by medium levels of acquisition, assimilation, transformation and exploitation; and c) that there are a variety of paths to improving the absorptive capacity of firms. These findings are important to formulating more diverse, flexible and less costly public policies aimed towards improving firms' absorptive capacity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Agricultural production is the practice that uses the most water on the planet, especially the irrigated agriculture, which represents a large part of this demand. As well as the quantitative issue, adequate quality is essential to meet the demands of the crop and its return to the water sources, in a way that does not cause damage to the environment. To measure this consumption, the expression "water footprint" emerged. The water footprint seeks to quantify the demand for water incorporated into products. This paper aims to determine the amount of water used to produce irrigated rice in six rice growing regions in the state of Rio Grande do Sul (RS), in the 2019/2020 crop. The mentioned regions are represented the municipalities of Uruguaiana (West Border), Dom Pedrito (Campanha), Santa Maria (Central Region), Camaquã (Internal Coastal Plain), Porto Alegre (External Coastal Plain), and Rio Grande (South Zone). Climate data from the analyzed regions, during the plant cycle, and productivity values in the crop in question were used. Values of 1187 m
3 t−1 were found for WB, 1347 m3 t−1 for CA, 1058 m3 t−1 for CR, 783 m3 t−1 for ICP, 1115 m3 t−1 for ECP, and 1066 m3 t−1 for SZ. For the state of Rio Grande do Sul, an average water footprint was obtained in the 2019/2020 crop of 1093 m3 t−1 . [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

RICE oil ,BIODIESEL fuels ,RICE industry ,DIESEL fuels ,KINEMATIC viscosity ,RAW materials ,AGRICULTURAL wastes ,METHYL formate - Abstract
Biodiesel is the most promising alternative fuel for replacing diesel in diesel engines, its use as a diesel substitute can reduce emissions of greenhouse gases and smoke. Among the techniques capable of promoting the production of biodiesel, the most used on an industrial scale is the transesterification of raw materials. Brazil has a socioeconomic advantage in the production of biodiesel due to the high availability of raw materials in the agro-industrial sector. A culture capable of providing a low-cost source of triglycerides in the Rio Grande do Sul is the rice culture, as its processing generates bran as a by-product of rice, considered an agricultural residue, from which it is possible to extract vegetable oil. Brazil is the ninth largest rice producer in the world, therefore, the present study aims to explore the production of biodiesel via basic transesterification of rice bran vegetable oil with high quality in order to encourage the use of biofuel and promote the diversification of its matrix. On the whole, the paper leads the conclusion that biodiesel of rice bran oil production via methyl transesterification using KOH as a catalyst with 7.5:1 of molar ratio, 1.25% catalyst and 60 minutes of reaction, is viable and capable of producing biodiesel with the quality required by ANP, EN and ASTM specifications for yield, moisture, kinematic viscosity, acidity index, saponification and iodine. This paper presents the results of recharge estimation and water table variation analyses of the Coastal Aquifer System, located in the Rio Grande do Sul Coastal Plain (Brazil). Water-level data from 11 wells were processed and analyzed, applying autocorrelation and cross-correlation methods to evaluate the aquifer memory effect and mean response time to rainfall events. The seasonality of the response time was evaluated through splitting the data series in windows of 90 days, overlapped by 45 days. Recharge rates were obtained with the water table fluctuation (WTF) daily applications (RISE and MRC), considering specific yields of 20%, 25% and 30%. Water-level data smoothing with moving averages and time series filters were necessary, to remove level rises not associated with precipitation events within the aquifer average response time, The autocorrelation and cross-correlation displayed a variability of responses through the wells, with median response times of level to precipitation from 0, 1 and 2 days (wells in aquifer layers of fine to medium sands) to 10 days (wells in aquifer layers of higher clay content). The recharge rates of 0.74 to 2.42 mm day
−1 and Recharge/Precipitation ratios from 19% to 46% were obtained (Sy = 25%, mean between RISE and MRC results). From these applications, the study presents the importance of level data processing and filtering to daily WTF applications and displays the differences in the behavior of the wells in the Coastal Aquifer System. Purpose: This paper aims to propose a structured model based on a data mining algorithm that can calculate, based on business association (BA) attributes, the probability of micro and small enterprises (MSEs) becoming a new member of a BA. Another goal is the probability of a BA attracting new members. Design/methodology/approach: As a methodological procedure, the authors used the Naive Bayes data mining algorithm. The collected data were analyzed both quantitatively and qualitatively and then used to define the model, which was tested randomly, while allowing for the possibility of future validation. Findings: The findings suggest a structured model based on a data mining algorithm. The model can certainly be used as a management tool for BAs concentrating their efforts on those businesses that are certainly potential new recruits. Further, for an MSE, it serves as a means of evaluating a BA, indicating the possible advantages in becoming a member of a particular association. Research limitations/implications: This paper is not intended to be generalized, considering that it only analyzes the BAs of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. In this way, when applying this model to other situations, the attributes listed here can be revised and even modified to adapt to the situation in focus. Practical implications: The use of the proposed model will make it possible to optimize the time of BA managers. It also gives MSE greater reliability in choosing BA. Social implications: Using this model will provide better decision-making and better targeting, thus benefiting both the BAs and the MSEs, which can improve their management and keep jobs. Originality/value: This paper contributes to the literature because it is the first to connect BAs, MSEs and Naive Bayes. Also, this study helps in better management for BA managers in their daily activities and provides a better choice of BA for MSE managers. Also, this study contextualizes BAs, MSEs and data mining in an objective way. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: This paper aims to investigate the impact of social features of an inter-organizational network on organizational learning and, in turn, on its performance. Specifically, this paper focuses on the following social features: proximity among members, trust among members, trust in network management, commitment among members, members' engagement and exchange of information. Design/methodology/approach: This paper is based on evidence from a survey involving 101 organizations that integrate the Cooperation Networks established in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The authors analyze data by using exploratory factor analysis, confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation modeling. Furthermore, they advance to also measuring "subjective" variables to business excellence. Findings: The authors find that trust in network management and information exchange is positively associated with organizational learning. In turn, organizational learning appears to impact network members' performance positively. Arguably, no results about the impact of proximity among members, trust among members and commitment among members are interesting to activate a discussion on the role of region cultural dimensions in shaping the impact of social features underlying the inter-organizational networks on organizational learning. Research limitations/implications: This study can be enriched by considering moderating variables in the relationships between the social conditions underlying inter-organizational network and learning. Practical implications: The authors critically discuss the social features underlying the inter-organizational networks that impact learning among network members and how these aspects may be addressed to improve performance. Originality/value: Given the focus of this empirical analysis, the authors advance the idea that regional culture is the layer of culture that most powerfully inspires the social features of networks, and shapes organizational learning. Censuses and other surveys responsible for gathering socioeconomic data are expensive and time consuming. For this reason, in poor and developing countries there often is a long gap between these surveys, which hinders the appropriate formulation of public policies as well as the development of researches. One possible approach to overcome this challenge for some socioeconomic indicators is to use satellite imagery to estimate these variables, although it is not possible to replace demographic census surveys completely due to its territorial coverage, level of disaggregation of information and large set of information. Even though using orbital images properly requires, at least, a basic remote sensing knowledge level, these images have the advantage of being commonly free and easy to access. In this paper, we use daytime and nighttime satellite imagery and apply a transfer learning technique to estimate average income, GDP per capita and a constructed water index at the city level in two Brazilian states, Bahia and Rio Grande do Sul. The transfer learning approach could explain up to 64% of the variation in city-level variables depending on the state and variable. Although data from different countries may be considerably different, results are consistent with the literature and encouraging as it is a first analysis of its kind for Brazil. Summary: Accurately quantifying the social distancing (SD) practice of a population is essential for governments and health agencies to better plan and adapt restrictions during a pandemic crisis. In such a scenario, the reduction of social mobility also has a significant impact on electricity consumption, since people are encouraged to stay at home and many commercial and industrial activities are reduced or even halted. This paper proposes a methodology to qualify the SD of a medium‐sized city, located in the northwest of the state of Rio Grande do Sul (RS), Brazil, using data of electricity consumption measured by the municipality's energy utility. The methodology consists of combining a data set, and an average consumption profile of Sundays is obtained using data from 4‐months, it is then defined as a high SD profile due to the typical lower social activities on Sundays. An supervised and an unsupervised artificial neural network (ANN) are trained with this profile and used to analyze electricity consumption of this city during the COVID‐19 pandemic. Low, moderate, and high SD ranges are also created, and the daily population behavior is evaluated by the ANNs. The results are strongly correlated and discussed with government restrictions imposed during the analyzed period and indicate that the ANNs can correctly classify the intensity of SD practiced by people. The unsupervised ANN is used more easily and in different scenarios, so it can be indicated for use by public administration for purposes of assess the effectiveness of SD policies based on the guidelines established during the COVID‐19 pandemic. INTERPOLATION spaces ,MARKOV chain Monte Carlo ,GAUSSIAN distribution - Abstract
Many models for environmental data that are observed in time and space have been proposed in the literature. The main objective of these models is usually to make predictions in time and to perform interpolations in space. Realistic predictions and interpolations are obtained when the process and its variability are well represented through a model that takes into consideration its peculiarities. In this paper, we propose a spatio-temporal model to handle observations that come from distributions with heavy tails and for which the assumption of isotropy is not realistic. As a natural choice for a heavy-tailed model, we take a Student's-t distribution. The Student's-t distribution, while being symmetric, provides greater flexibility in modeling data with kurtosis and shape different from the Gaussian distribution. We handle anisotropy through a spatial deformation method. Under this approach, the original geographic space of observations gets mapped into a new space where isotropy holds. Our main result is, therefore, an anisotropic model based on the heavy-tailed t distribution. Bayesian approach and the use of MCMC enable us to sample from the posterior distribution of the model parameters. In Sect. 2, we discuss the main properties of the proposed model. In Sect. 3, we present a simulation study, showing its superiority over the traditional isotropic Gaussian model. In Sect. 4, we show the motivation that has led us to propose the t distribution-based anisotropic model—the real dataset of evaporation coming from the Rio Grande do Sul state of Brazil. The increasing mortality of COVID-19 can aggravate soil contamination by metals, harmful to the health of the population, requiring new projects for future cemeteries capable of mitigating these impacts to the environment, justifying the importance of studying the concentrations of metals in the soil of urban cemeteries. The paper analyzed the levels of metals in the soil of urban cemeteries in the City of Carazinho, in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, located in southern Brazil, considering the increase in deaths by COVID-19, for the purpose of future projects for cemeteries aimed at mitigating the impacts generated on the environment. The soils of the three urban cemeteries in Carazinho were sampled, with 5 internal and external points, with 3 repetitions at depths of 0–20 and 20–40 cm, adding 180 samples to measure the concentrations of Fe, Mn, Cu, Zn, Cr and Pb (g kg
−1 ), considering the analytical sequence: (1) analysis in triplicate with mean deviation (RDS); (2) R2 of the analytical curve; (3) traceability of the pattern of each metal; (4) quantification limit of each metal (QL), with the performance of nitroperchloric digestion of the samples and the determinations of metals by flame modality atomic absorption spectrometry. Quantitative data on deaths by COVID-19 were analyzed by univariate modeling of time series, in the integrated autoregressive moving averages model. The results of this study were made available to fifteen architects, who attributed future solutions for environmentally sustainable cemeteries. The results showed high levels of copper (Cu) and iron (Fe) in the soil of the cemeteries studied. Considering the increase in deaths and subsequent burials per COVID-19 revealed a prediction for the death toll of 6,082,306 for June 9, 2022, it is assumed that metal contamination can reach even higher levels. To mitigate these levels of contamination by metals, 80% of the architect respondents expressed their preference for a vertical cemetery, with treatment of gases and effluents to mitigate environmental impacts. The present paper presents the rutting evaluation of different asphalt mixtures in use in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil's southernmost-region, through the uniaxial repeated load test and the monitoring of mixtures performance in field, culminating in a criteria proposal for the parameter Flow Number depending on traffic. For this, five distinct asphalt binders were studied, five grain size distributions, three warm mixtures and 21 hot mixes, with different mineralogical types of aggregates, and 15 monitored test sites distributed geographically throughout the state. The results indicated that the binder modifications were the most influential characteristics in the asphalt mixtures rutting. Also, it was verified that the Flow Number criteria proposed so far in the country present significant differences. In this way, a new criterion was suggested, and it is possible to infer a good applicability for asphalt concretes, except for warm mixes and those with rubber binder. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper offers insights about industrial relations in rural Rio Grande do Sul (i.e. the southern-most State of Brazil) and presents a thematic analysis of a set of qualitative data (mainly interview transcripts with rural salaried workers and union leaders from Rio Grande do Sul). Three main interconnected themes emerged from this analysis: the rural working conditions (extremely harsh and unsafe), the rural union organization (i.e. rural unions as health service providers), the specificity of collective bargaining in rural sector. Despite the extremely low wages and precarious working conditions, even if relieved by sindicatos actions, rural work is characterized by limited mobilization, for two reasons: first, because of the relations between unions and rural workers, and second, the Brazilian institutions of labor market. Purpose: Despite substantial efforts made by Brazil's government to increase the adoption rate of sustainable agricultural practices (SAP), many of them have not been adopted by the farmers. This paper explores the factors influencing the adoption of SAP in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, one of the largest Brazilian grain producers. Design/methodology/approach: Using four logistic models, the authors test a conceptual framework that provides a systemic view of farmers' adoption decisions from a sample of 172 farmers. Findings: The findings show that the adoption of SAP is influenced by farmers' socioeconomic characteristics (e.g. gender, level of education, farm size, asset values and farm income), attributes of SAP (compatibility of agricultural practice) and psychological factors (ecocentrism, anthropocentrism, and beliefs about climate change). Research limitations/implications: The results presented may not reflect the characteristics of the region studied because random sampling was not employed. Also, other psychological statements should be used in the questionnaire. Originality/value: Little attention has been given to the analysis of farmers' psychological factors in studies on the adoption of agricultural conservation practices. This study provides a "systemic approach" that measures both socioeconomic and psychological factors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
