Microbiological safety and quality of beef is crucial as beef can serve as a reservoir for a variety of bacteria, including spoilage-related and foodborne pathogens. Controlling microbial contamination is a critical aspect of food quality and safety, but it is difficult to prevent as there are several potential sources of contamination from production to distribution. In this study, the microbiological ecology of cattle/beef and associated environmental samples (n = 69) were trace-investigated to reveal microbiome shifts in cattle/beef and possible cross-contaminants throughout the entire supply chain using 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Pseudomonas, Psychrobacter, and Acinetobacter, known as spoilage bacteria, opportunistic pathogens, or antibiotic-resistant bacteria, were the main microorganisms present in cattle/beef, and Staphylococcus became abundant in the final products. The dominance of Acinetobacter and Pseudomonas was noticeable in the slaughtered carcasses and slaughterhouse environment, indicating that the slaughterhouse is a critical site where hygienic practices are required to prevent further contamination. Taxonomic similarities between cattle/beef and several environmental samples, as well as diversity analysis, presented a high potential for microbial transmission. Source tracking identified environmental samples that primarily contributed to the microbiota of cattle/beef. Farm floor (48%), workers' gloves (73%), and carcass splitters (20%) in the slaughterhouse were found to be major sources influencing the microbiome of cattle/beef at the farm, slaughterhouse, and processing plant, respectively. In 2015, Staphylococcus argenteus and Staphylococcus schweitzeri were proposed as new species, distinct from Staphylococcus aureus and collectively referred to as the S. aureus complex. However, no clinical reports of these new species exist in Korea. Upon the application of matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) for all bloodstream isolates since September 2022, S. argenteus was identified in one patient. Therefore, we aimed to search for new species among the archives of the S. aureus bacteremia cohort and describe their clinical and microbiological characteristics. Among the 691 archived S. aureus isolates between 2012 and 2018, one was identified as S. argenteus via MALDI-TOF MS. Both S. argenteus isolates (one in 2022) were obtained from patients with extensive pneumonia accompanied by bacteremia and both cases had fatal outcomes. They harbored multiple virulence genes ( clfA, clfB, fnbpA, sdrC, sdrD, sdrE, bbp, cna, see, seg, sei, blaZ, fnbpB, and map ) but did not harbor mecA and pvl . No matched sequence type (ST) was found in either isolate, and both S. argenteus isolates were closely related to ST1594, ST1593, ST1793, and ST1303, which belonged to S. argenteus. S. argenteus accounted for <1% of the S. aureus complex but had clinical characteristics similar to S. aureus . Therefore, clinicians should be aware of these factors to avoid misidentifying these strains as coagulase-negative staphylococci, and appropriate reporting is required to minimize confusion.IMPORTANCE Staphylococcus argenteus , a member of Staphylococcus aureus complex, has been reported as an important pathogen that causes clinically invasive infections in humans similar to S. aureus . Clinical isolates of S. argenteus have been reported across the world, showing a large geographical difference in prevalence and genomic profile. However, there have been no clinical reports regarding this new species in Korea. Background: To investigate the impact of nutritional iodine deficiency on thyroid dysfunction (TD) in very low birth weight (VLBW) infants, we analyzed the association between iodine-deficient parenteral nutrition (PN) and TD requiring L-thyroxine (TD-LT4). Methods: Data of VLBW infants were obtained from the Korean Neonatal Network registry. Factors including duration of PN were analyzed according to TD-LT4. Results: TD-LT4 occurred in 490 (8.7%) of 5635 infants, and more frequently occurred in infants requiring PN for ≥4 weeks (10.2%). PN ≥ 4 weeks was one of the risk factors for TD-LT4, with an odds ratio (OR) of 1.346, p = 0.002. However, multivariate analysis showed that TD-LT4 was more of a risk for infants that were small for gestational age (OR 2.987, p < 0.001) and for other neonatal morbidities such as seizures (OR 1.787, p = 0.002) and persistent pulmonary hypertension (OR 1.501, p = 0.039) than PN ≥ 4 weeks (OR 0.791, p = 0.080). Conclusions: Prolonged iodine-deficient PN might affect TD-LT4 in VLBW infants. However, the effect of nutritional iodine deficiency on TD-LT4 risk was less than that of SGA or severe neonatal morbidities in Korean VLBW infants.

Purpose: The identification of blood biomarkers to diagnose acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (AECOPD) will have clinical utility. Here, we used a proteomics-based approach to identify biomarkers capable of identifying AECOPD., Patients and Methods: This prospective, single-center pilot study enrolled 12 patients who came to Asan Medical Center (South Korea) via the outpatient clinic or emergency department with symptoms of AECOPD and were follow-up in the outpatient clinic during convalescence between 2015 and 2017. Paired blood samples collected from each patient during the treatment naïve AECOPD and convalescence stages were analyzed. A sequential window acquisition of all theoretical fragmentation spectra-mass spectrometry (SWATH-MS)-based proteome analysis was performed and a subset of the data were verified by ELISA., Results: The SWATH-MS analysis identified 226 plasma proteins across all samples examined. The median coefficient of variation for triplicate technical replicates of each sample was 1.13 ± 1.38%, indicating high precision of the technique. Fold-change and paired t -test analyses revealed that 14 proteins were present at higher levels in the AECOPD samples than in the convalescence samples. A gene ontology analysis revealed that these proteins are involved in the acute-phase response. A total of 15 proteins were present at higher levels during the recovery (convalescence) stage than during the acute exacerbation phase, and gene ontology analysis revealed that these proteins are related to lipid metabolism and transport. Verification of the SWATH-MS data was performed using ELISAs for three proteins that were up-regulated in AECOPD, namely, LBP, ORM2, and SERPINA3. Among them, SERPINA3 (p = 0.005) was up-regulated significantly in AECOPD compared with the convalescence state., Conclusion: Potential plasma biomarkers of AECOPD were discovered using the SWATH-MS proteomics method, and functional molecular associations were investigated. The quantification of canopy photosynthesis and evapotranspiration of crops (ET c ) is essential to appreciate the effects of environmental changes on CO 2 flux and water availability in agricultural ecosystems and crop productivity. This study simulated the canopy photosynthesis and ET processes of paddy rice (Oryza sativa) based on the development of physiological modules (i.e., gross primary production [GPP] and ET c ) and their incorporation into the GRAMI-rice model that uses remote sensing data. We also projected spatiotemporal variations in the GPP, ET, yield, and biomass of paddy rice at maturity using the updated GRAMI-rice model combined with geostationary satellite images to identify the relationships of canopy photosynthesis and ET c with crop productivity. GPP and ET data for paddy rice were obtained from three KoFlux sites in South Korea in 2015 and 2016. Vegetation indices were acquired from the Geostationary Ocean Color Imager (GOCI) of the Communication Ocean and Meteorological Satellite (COMS) from 2012 to 2017 and integrated into GRAMI-rice. GPP and ET c estimates using GRAMI-rice were in close agreement with flux tower estimates with Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency ranges of 0.40-0.79 for GPP and 0.49-0.62 for ET c . Also, GRAMI-rice was reasonably well incorporated with the COMS GOCI imagery and reproduced spatiotemporal variations in the GPP and ET of rice in the Korean peninsula. The current study results demonstrate that the updated GRAMI-rice model with the canopy photosynthesis and ET c modules is capable of reproducing spatiotemporal variations in CO 2 assimilation and ET of paddy rice at various geographical scales and for regions of interest that are observable by satellite sensors (e.g., inaccessible North Korea)., (Copyright © 2020 Elsevier B.V. Background: Antimicrobial stewardship programmes (ASPs) are suggested as a vital strategy to address antimicrobial resistance., Aim: To examine the current status of ASPs in Korean hospitals, to identify problems and challenges for the implementation of proper ASPs, and to provide a reference for developing more effective ASP policies., Methods: A questionnaire based on the 'Seven Core Elements of Hospital Antibiotic Stewardship Programs' from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention was developed, modified from the previous questionnaire on ASPs in Korea, 2015. ASP-participating physicians such as infectious disease specialists (IDSs), paediatric IDSs, and directors of infection control departments were targeted. Only one ASP-associated physician per hospital participated in the survey., Findings: The survey response rate was 88.4% (84/95). The median number of medical personnel participating in ASPs was 3 (interquartile range (IQR): 1-5), most of whom were IDS (median: 2; IQR: 1-2). Only 6.0% (5/84) of hospitals had full-time workers for ASPs. Whereas restrictive measures for designated antimicrobials were widely implemented among Korean hospitals (88.1%, 74/84), the proportion of hospitals with interventions for inappropriate long-term antimicrobial use and a conversion strategy from parenteral to oral antimicrobial administration was only 9.5% (8/84) and 1.2% (1/84), respectively. Lack of time, personnel, and appropriate compensation was perceived as the major barrier to establishing an ASP in Korean hospitals., Conclusion: ASPs in Korean hospitals were primarily carried out by one or two IDSs, and programmes mostly comprised restrictive measures for designated antimicrobials. Ecological quality (EcoQ) status of the Southwest and West coasts of South Korea was evaluated within the "National Investigation of Marine Ecosystems in Korea" in the 2015. In particular, the study dealt to assess the ecological quality of the sediments using free-living nematode communities. A total of 149 species were found in the study area, and Daptonema, Sabatieria, Parodontophora, Sphaerolaimus, and Viscosia were found as dominant genera. Statistical analysis of both environmental and faunal parameters showed an increasing human pressure from Western to Southern coasts. The community structure changed with the environmental features of the study area and allowed the detection of a suite of possible nematode indicators that might be used in monitoring studies. In particular, Dorylaimopsis spp. appeared heavy metal and organic matter resistant taxa, Sabatieria an eutrophication resistant genus, while Paracanthonchus and Neotonchus as heavy metal and organic matter sensitive genera. The principal component analysis (PCA) results showed a clear negative correlation between maturity index and both heavy metal and organic matter increasing, while diversity indices did not appear to be significantly influenced by them. Appling the thresholds of the synthetic nematode indices, the EcoQ of the study area was assessed as poor to moderate.

Aggression is a complex, ubiquitous phenomenon that impacts behavioral traits and psychological health. Assessing aggression is challenging because aggression constitutes multiple subtraits, such as anger, reactive aggression, and overt aggression. Conventional methods of assessing aggression are susceptible to bias because they mainly rely upon self-reports. Thus, more objective methods that provide a multifaceted understanding of aggression in individuals are required. Here, we propose a supportive method of assessing specific aggression subtraits in Koreans using electroencephalography (EEG) and electrocardiography (ECG). Our evaluations and statistical analyses revealed that EEG and ECG signals in subjects responding to video cues that induced aggression are associated with aggression subtraits. In particular, we identified spectral differences in EEG signals in response to stimuli with situation-dependent aggression. The α and β signals of the Fp2 site (the right ventromedial prefrontal region) are highly associated with anger, reactive aggression, and overt aggression. Moreover, ECG signals are associated with anger and overt aggression. These results link neurobiological findings to psychological explanations of aggression and multiple aspects of human behavior.
