The family Convolvulaceae comprises approximately 50-60 genera with approximately 1600-1700 species, exhibiting a rich diversity of morphological characteristics and occupying a broad range of ecological habitats. High-throughput sequencing identified a tentative new virus in the family Geminiviridae infecting Calystegia sepium var. japonica in South Korea. The 2,706 nt long genome comprises six open reading frames (ORFs). The analysis of the nucleotide sequence of the genome and the putative amino acid sequences of ORFs indicated that the virus was closely related to the members of the family Geminiviridae. The genome organization of the virus was similar to that of members of the genus Topilevirus in terms of the number of ORFs and splicing signal. However, the virus, tentatively named bindweed mottle virus (BWMV), may not be assigned to current genera into the family Geminiviridae., (© 2024. Background: To precisely build a healthcare delivery system at regional levels, local patients' healthcare service utilization patterns must be examined. Hence, this study utilized trend analysis of the relevance index of each disease of each essential medical service field at the municipal and provincial levels., Methods: This study analyzed customized databases released by the National Health Insurance Service from 2016-2020. Diseases defined in the Korean National Burden of Disease (KNBD) study were categorized into the following essential medical service fields: trauma care, cardiocerebrovascular, maternal and neonatal, mental health, infection, cancer, older adults' care and rehabilitation, and others. Relevance index, the percentage of medical service utilization in a region by the residents of that region relative to their total medical service utilization, was examined by region (17 municipal and provincial regions) and disease area. The relevance index was determined based on the number of patients and the total out-of-pocket expenses., Result: Eight of the 17 regions showed over a 90.0% relevance index in the infection area. In the cancer area, 14 regions (not including Seoul, Daegu, and Busan) had a relevance index lower than 75.0%. Throughout the analysis period (2016-2020), there were no significant variations in the relevance index. Diseases such as bone and connective tissue cancer (39.0%), neural tube defects (16.7%), and autism (57.1%) had low relevance index in the essential medical service fields. Objectives: Attempts to understand patient safety using administrative data in Korea have been rare. This study develops a Korean patient safety incident code classification system and identifies its characteristics to boost diagnosis code usage for assessing patient safety., Methods: Based on existing literature, we selected Korean Standard Classification of Diseases 7 codes for characterizing patient safety incidents using diagnosis codes. We conducted 2 rounds of review to evaluate the codes applicability to different patient safety incidents using the Delphi method. The verified diagnosis codes were then classified by incident type., Results: Of the 54,259 Korean Standard Classification of Diseases 7 codes, 4509 were applicable for Korean patients, which were divided into 2435 code groups and 2074 candidate groups. The codes were classified into 6 categories (diagnosis, medication, patient care, operation or procedure, infection related, and other) and then further classified into 35 subcategories. The major categories of patient safety incidents, in the order of frequency, involved medication, fluid and blood related (1719, 38.1%), operation and procedure related (1339, 29.7%), and patient care related (991, 22.0%). Meanwhile, there were only 2 codes related to diagnosis., Conclusions: Our study provides a basis for estimating patient safety incidents using diagnosis codes. We suggest that gradually increasing the utilization and accuracy of the patient safety incident codes will help develop effective patient safety indicators in Korea similar to other countries. Background: Little is known about the self-perceived level of disability of stroke survivors in the community. We aimed to characterise Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) 1 year after stroke and investigate how sociodemographic and stroke-related factors and medical adherence explain the self-perceived level of disability in a Korean stroke population., Methods: This was a multicentre cross-sectional study. A total of 382 ischaemic stroke survivors at 1 year after onset from 11 university hospitals underwent a one-session assessment, including socioeconomic variables, the modified Rankin Scale (mRS), various neurological sequelae, the Morisky, Green and Levin-Medication Adherence Questionnaire (MGL), and the World Health Organization Disability Assessment Schedule 2.0 (WHODAS 2.0) 36-items. The relationship between disability and different variables was analysed using ordinal logistic regression., Results: The prevalence of disability based on global WHODAS 2.0 was 62.6% (mild, 41.6%; moderate, 16.0%; severe, 5.0%). The prevalence of severe disability was higher in participation in society (16.8%) and getting around (11.8%) than in other domains. Low MGL- motivation was the only factor determining a significant association between all six domains of disability after adjustment. Different predictors for specific domains were age, mRS, dysarthria, trouble seeing, cognition problems, and MGL-motivation for understanding and communicating; age, recurrent stroke, mRS, hemiplegia, facial palsy, general weakness, and MGL-motivation for getting around; age, education, mRS, hemiplegia, and MGL-motivation for self-care; education, recurrent stroke, hemiplegia, dysarthria, and MGL-motivation for getting along with people; age, education, income, mRS, hemiplegia, dysarthria, MGL-knowledge, and MGL-motivation for life activities; living without a spouse, mRS, hemiplegia, dysarthria, trouble seeing, cognition problems, general weakness, and MGL-motivation for participation in society., Conclusions: Self-perceived disability according to the WHODAS 2.0 at 1 year after stroke was highly prevalent. Each disability domain showed a different prevalence and associated factors. Interventions promoting medical adherence to motivation seemed to help achieve high HRQoL in all domains., (© 2022. Objectives: This study aimed to explore nurses' perceptions regarding disclosure of patient safety incidents., Methods: An anonymous online survey was conducted, and results were compared with those of the general public using the same questionnaire in a previous study., Results: Among 689 nurses, 96.8% of nurses felt major errors should be disclosed to patients or their caregivers, but only 67.5% felt disclosure of medical errors should be mandatory. In addition, 58.5% of nurses were concerned that disclose will increase the incidence of medical lawsuits. More than two-thirds of nurses felt such discloses will reduce feelings of guilt associated with a patient safety incident. Only 51.1% of nurses, but 93.3% of the public, felt near misses should be disclosed to patients., Conclusions: Nurses generally had a positive attitude toward disclosure of patient safety incidents, but they preferred it less than the general public. To reduce this gap, legal and nonlegal measures will need to be implemented. Air pollution caused by particulate matter (PM) has become a serious issue, and significant research has focused on managing large stationary emission sources, i.e., the primary sources of PM. Currently, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Method 201A and ISO 23210 are predominantly employed to measure the PM emissions at large stationary sources. Method 201A is designated as a standard test method in Korea, but it is difficult to measure PM 10 and PM 2.5 simultaneously owing to the size of the full-set cyclone. In large stationary emission sources, the use of a serial connection of PM 10 and PM 2.5 cyclones is unsuitable for measurements at conventional sampling ports featuring diameters of approximately 100 mm. Therefore, in this study, PM 10 and PM 2.5 cyclones were developed to replace the cyclones currently used in Method 201A. The developed cyclones featured a cutoff diameter, which was confirmed by numerical and experimental analyses that were close to Method 201A. Moreover, there was an increase in the stiffness of collection efficiency. The hook adaptor, which is a key accessory used in Method 201A, was found to be applicable to the newly developed cyclones. This alternative method will help reduce the measurement time by simultaneously measuring TSP, PM 10 , and PM 2.5 and eliminates the costs of installing or refurbishing additional sampling ports at existing large stationary sources., (Copyright © 2020 Elsevier Inc. Background: Improving the health behaviors of those with chronic diseases such as hypertension and diabetes is important for disease management. Few in-depth studies have been conducted in Korea on the health behaviors of chronic disease patients. This study examined the health behaviors of chronic disease patients over time and compared them with those of the general population., Methods: Cross-sectional time-series data obtained from the Korea Community Health Survey from 2008 to 2017 were analyzed. Thirteen diseases were included in this analysis, namely, hypertension, diabetes, dyslipidemia, stroke, myocardial infarction, angina, osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, asthma, allergic rhinitis, atopic dermatitis, cataract, and depression. The current smoking rate, drinking rate, and the walking rate, which are leading health behaviors necessary for preventing chronic diseases, were analyzed by disease type. We compared patients' health behaviors with those of the general population and identified regional variations., Results: Although the current overall smoking rate was seemingly declining, the overall monthly drinking and high-risk drinking rates were increasing. In 2017, patients experiencing depression symptoms had a higher smoking rate than did the general population; hypertension and diabetes patients had a higher risk-drinking rate than did the latter. The general population's walking rate was highest. There were considerable variations by region among chronic disease patients., Conclusions: Chronic disease patients displayed worse health behaviors than those of the general population, in some instances. Rather than focusing only on chronic disease patients' medication adherence, strategies must be devised to increase their smoking cessation rate, decrease their drinking rate, and increase their walking rate.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate the scope and severity of the second victim problem among nurses by examining the experiences and effects of patient safety incidents (PSIs) on them., Participants/setting: 492 nurses who had experienced PSIs and provide direct care in South Korean medical institutions., Design: A cross-sectional study with anonymous online self-report questionnaires was conducted to nurses in order to examine the experiences and effects of PSIs. Scales measuring post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and post-traumatic embitterment disorder (PTED) were used for a more quantitative examination of the effects of PSIs. A χ 2 test was administered to find any difference in responses to difficulties due to PSIs between the direct and indirect experience of PSIs. Furthermore, linear regression analysis was conducted to investigate the factors related to scores on the PTSD and PTED scales., Results: A statistically significant difference was observed for participants who reported having experienced sleeping disorders, with those with direct experience showing 42.4% sleeping disorders and indirect experience at 21.0%. Also, there was a statistically significant difference between the 34.3% with direct experience and the 22.1% with indirect experience regarding having considered duty or job changes (resignation). Regression analysis showed total PTSD scores for indirect experience at 11.97 points (95% CI: -17.31 to -6.63), lower than direct experience. Moreover, those who thought the medical error was not involved in PSI had a total PTED score 4.39 points (95% CI: -7.23 to -1.55) lower than those who thought it was involved., Conclusions: A considerable number of nurses experienced psychological difficulties due to PSIs at levels that could interfere with their work. The effect of PSIs on nurses with direct experience of PSIs was greater compared with those with indirect experience. The present study investigated physicians' perceptions regarding the need for, effects of, and barriers to disclosure of patient safety incidents (DPSI). An anonymous online questionnaire survey was conducted to investigate physicians' perception regarding DPSI, in particular of when DPSI was needed in various situations and of methods for facilitating DPSI. Physicians' perceptions were then compared to the general public's perceptions regarding DPSI identified in a previous study. A total of 910 physicians participated. Most participants (94.9%) agreed that any serious medical error should be disclosed to patients and their caregivers, whereas only 39.8% agreed that even near-miss errors, which did not cause harm to patients, should be disclosed. Among the six known effects of DPSI presented, participating physicians showed the highest level of agreement (89.6%) that "DPSI will lead physicians to pay more attention to patient safety in the future." Among six barriers to DPSI, participants showed the most agreement (75.9%) that "It is unreasonable to demand DPSI in only the medical field, and disclosure is not actively conducted in other fields." With respect to methods for facilitating DPSI, participants agreed that "A guideline for DPSI is needed" (91.2%) and "Manpower to support DPSI in hospitals is required" (89.1%). Meanwhile, 79.3% agreed that "If an apology law is enacted, physicians will perform more DPSI" and 72.4% that "I support the introduction of an apology law." Background: Medical professionals who experience patient safety incidents (PSIs) are vulnerable to emotional pain and other difficulties; such individuals are referred to as "second victims." This study quantitatively examines the characteristics of physicians' experiences of PSIs, along with the consequent difficulties and levels of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and post-traumatic embitterment disorder (PTED) regarding the events., Methods: An anonymous, self-report online survey was administered to physicians. This collected information regarding PSI characteristics (e.g., type, severity of harm) and impact (e.g., sleep disorder, consideration of career change), as well as participants' socio-demographic characteristics. Meanwhile, to quantitatively assess PSI impacts, PTSD and PTED scales were also administered. PSI characteristics and impacts were analyzed using frequency analysis, and the differing effects of indirect and direct PSI experience regarding consequent difficulties were analyzed using chi-square tests. Factors associated with PTSD and PTED scores were identified using linear regression., Results: Of 895 physicians, 24.6% and 24.0% experienced PSI-induced sleep disorder and eating disorder, respectively. Moreover, 38.9% reported being overly cautious in subsequent similar situations, and 12.6% had considered changing jobs or career. Sleep disorder was significantly more common among participants who directly experienced a PSI (32.8%) than among those with indirect experience (15.3%; P < 0.001). Linear regression showed that indirectly involved physicians had a lower mean PTSD score (by 8.44; 95% confidence interval, -12.28 to -4.60) than directly involved physicians., Conclusion: This study found that many physicians experience PSI-induced physical symptoms and behavioral responses, and that the severity of these symptoms varies depending on the type of incident and degree of harm involved. The inhalation of a water aerosol from a humidifier containing disinfectants has led to serious lung injuries in Korea. To promote the safe use of products, the Korean government enacted regulations on the chemicals in various consumer products that could have adverse health effects. Given the concern over the potential health risks associated with the hazardous ingredients in deodorizing consumer products, 17 ingredients were analyzed and assessed according to their health risk on 3 groups by the application type in 47 deodorizing products. The risk assessment study followed a stepwise procedure (e.g., collecting toxicological information, hazard identification/exposure assessment, and screening and detailed assessment for inhalation and dermal routes). The worst-case scenario and maximum concentration determined by the product purpose and application type were used as the screening assessment. In a detailed assessment, the 75th exposure factor values were used to estimate the assumed reasonable exposure to ingredients. The exposed concentrations of seven ingredients were calculated. Due to limitation of toxicity information, butylated hydroxyl toluene for a consumer&rsquo;s exposure via the dermal route only was conducted for a detailed assessment. This study showed that the assessed ingredients have no health risks at their maximum concentrations in deodorizing products. This approach can be used to establish guidelines for ingredients that may pose inhalation and dermal hazards.
