Shellfish-growing areas in marine environments are affected by pollutants that mainly originate from land, including streams, domestic wastewater, and the effluents of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), which may function as reservoirs of antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) and antibiotic-resistance genes (ARGs). The objective of this study was to identify the occurrence and distribution of antibiotic resistance at five oyster sampling sites and 11 major inland pollution sources in the drainage basin of Kamak Bay, Republic of Korea. Culture-based methods were used to estimate the diversity and abundance of antibiotic-resistant Escherichia coli strains isolated from oysters and major inland pollution sources. The percentages of ARB and multiple antibiotic resistance index values were significantly high in discharge water from small fishing villages without WWTPs. However, the percentages of antibiotic-resistant E. coli isolates from oysters were low, as there was no impact from major inland pollutants. Fourteen ARGs were also quantified from oysters and major inland pollution sources. Although most ARGs except for quinolones were widely distributed in domestic wastewater discharge and effluent from WWTPs, macrolide resistance genes (ermB and msrA) were detected mainly from oysters in Kamak Bay. This study will aid in tracking the sources of antibiotic contamination in shellfish to determine the correlation between shellfish and inland pollution sources.

The predominance of vaginal Lactobacillus species, specifically L. crispatus, is important for pregnancy maintenance, but varies by race. The composition of the vaginal microbiome can affect susceptibility to adverse pregnancy outcomes. We performed 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing on vaginal swabs taken from Korean pregnant women. Here, we report the transition of Lactobacillus spp. in samples of full-term birth (FTB) collected longitudinally in the second and third trimesters of pregnancy in a cohort study (n = 23) and their association with Lactobacillus abundance and preterm birth (PTB) in a case-control study (n = 200). Lactobacillus species, which was dominant in FTB samples including those that received interventions in the second trimester, did not change until 37 weeks of gestation. However, L. crispatus was replaced by other Lactobacillus species after 37 weeks. The PTB risk showed a closer association with the Lactobacillus abundance than with community state type determined by Lactobacillus species. PTB was associated with less than 90% of Lactobacillus abundance and an increase in Ureplasma parvum in the second trimester. Thus, the vaginal microbiome may change in preparation for childbirth in response to multiple intrinsic factors after 37 weeks of gestation. Aim: The presence of periodontal disease (PD) at a single time point has been suggested as a predictor of diabetes risk, but whether changes in PD status are associated with altered risk of diabetes is yet to be reported on a population scale. This study investigated whether recovery from or development of PD in a population is associated with an altered risk of diabetes occurrence., Materials and Methods: Data of subjects who received health screening from 2002 to 2007 were obtained from the National Health Insurance Service-National Health Screening cohort database of Korea. Patients with a history of diabetes were excluded. Changes in PD status were determined from the first two health screenings. Study subjects were divided into four groups according to the changes in PD status: PD-free, PD-recovered, PD-developed, and PD-chronic. The outcome was the occurrence of diabetes., Results: Overall, 111,611 subjects were included for analysis. During a median follow-up of 9.10 years, diabetes developed in 6102 subjects. The adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) for incident diabetes across various PD change groups (in reference to the PD-free group) were as follows: PD-chronic group = 1.096 (95% confidence interval [CI] 1.026-1.170, p = .006); PD-developed group = 1.073 (95% CI 0.993-1.159, p = .075); and PD-recovered group = 1.019 (95% CI 0.945-1.100, p = .622). The subjects who recovered from PD had a lower diabetes risk than those who had consistent PD (adjusted HR 0.930, 95% CI 0.865-1.000, p = .050), whereas those who developed PD had a higher risk of diabetes than those who remained PD-free., Conclusion: The longitudinal change in PD status is associated with incident diabetes risk. This study investigated the association between relative earnings and depressive symptoms among 578 married women from dual-earning households. We also examined the moderating role of both spouses' traditional gender role attitudes. Women's relative earnings in their households did not directly predict their depressive symptoms. However, there was a significant three-way interaction effect of women's relative earnings and both spouses' traditional gender role attitudes on women's depressive symptoms. Particularly, women with considerably stronger-than-average traditional gender role attitudes reported more depressive symptoms when their relative earnings were greater and when their husbands showed strong traditional gender role attitudes. However, women holding even slightly weaker-than-average traditional gender role attitudes reported significantly fewer depressive symptoms as their relative earnings increased, even when their husbands showed strong traditional gender role attitudes. These results indicate that traditional wives with high relative earnings may feel threatened by the discrepancy between their values (traditional gender role attitudes) and behaviors (high relative earnings), especially when their husbands hold strong traditional gender role attitudes., (© 2022 Institute of Psychology, Chinese Academy of Sciences and John Wiley & Sons Australia, Ltd.)

Introduction: In South Korea, the prevalence of obesity has continuously increased over the last decade, and the burden of social and economic costs has also increased immensely. The purpose of this study is to investigate the clinical characteristics and current status of patients receiving herbal medicine (HM) treatment for weight loss in Korean medicine (KM) by constructing a multi-institutional prospective registry., Methods and Analysis: This is a prospective, observational, multi-center registry, including patients visiting the KM clinics in South Korea for weight loss. This study will collaborate with 15 KM clinics and recruit patients into the registry between October 2021 and October 2022. The study population will include patients visiting the KM clinics for weight loss. A total of 1000 eligible patients visiting the KM clinics for weight loss who decide to undergo HM treatment will be enrolled in the registry. After enrollment, we will collect the individual characteristics of each patient, such as body mass index, body composition test, liver and kidney function tests, and information on prescribed HM. We will also record the adverse events at each visit., Discussion: This study is the first prospective, multicenter registry of HM for weight loss in KM clinics. The results of this registry may show the current status of patients who receive HM treatments for weight loss and provide evidence for reasonable decision-making on KM healthcare policy for obese patients in the future., (Copyright © 2022 the Author(s). WHAT IS KNOWN ON THE SUBJECT?: Pre- and postmenopausal women (PPW) experience changes in physical, psychological and social health. South-East Asia's female suicide rate is the highest compared with other countries, and the suicide rate of PPW in these countries continues to increase. The most influential factor in Asian women's suicidal ideation is family conflict; specifically, if PPW in South Korea cannot express their anger, it results in a culture-bound syndrome called "Hwa-Byung." However, there is a lack of research on Asian PPW. WHAT THE PAPER ADDS TO EXISTING KNOWLEDGE?: This study found differences in individual- and community-level factors affecting suicidal ideation between pre- and postmenopausal women. Individual factors that commonly affected suicidal ideation were experiencing violence, stress and depression. Individual factors that affected the suicidal ideation of premenopausal women more than postmenopausal women were religious beliefs, alcohol use and chronic disease. Community level factors affecting suicidal ideation were locational depression and locational counselling for stress in premenopausal women and locational counselling for depression in postmenopausal women. WHAT ARE THE IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE?: Mental health nurses could help prevent suicide by developing and applying community-based programmes for PPW, considering the specific socio-economic and cultural context and characteristics of Asian women. Mental health nurses could help PPW participate in programmes by preparing various interventions such as case management, personal counselling, physical activity, home-based mental health services, cognitive behavioural therapy and digital interventions for self-management. Mental health nurses need to prepare various methods such as online, offline, individual and group methods to work effectively in any social situation. ABSTRACT: Introduction Pre- and postmenopausal women (PPW) experience physical and psychological changes with hormonal changes. Among Asian middle-aged women, family and culture affect suicidal ideation, and the suicide rate among this population is increasing. There are few existing research on suicidal ideation among Asian PPW. Aim We examined individual- and community-level factors that predict suicidal ideation among PPW. Method Large-scale panel data from 5,154 South Korean PPW aged 35-64 years were used in a series of multilevel logistic regression analyses to examine factors associated with suicidal ideation at individual and community levels. Results Among premenopausal women, religious beliefs, alcohol use, chronic disease, experience of violence, stress and depression were individual-level factors. Locational depression and locational counselling for stress were community-level factors. Among postmenopausal women, experience of violence, stress, depression and perceived health status were individual level factors, and locational counselling for depression was a community level factor. Discussion Suicidal ideation among PPW is affected by both individual and community level factors. Nurses must comprehensively determine what risk factors affect suicidal ideation through various intervention methods-including online, offline, individual and group methods-while considering socio-economic situations. Implications for Practice Mental health nurses should provide targeted biopsychosocial interventions targeting psychosocial and physical problems and promoting the use of community resources to reduce PPW's suicidal ideation., (© 2020 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.)

Purpose: This study aimed to ascertain the general characteristics of injured patients and use the Andersen Model to identify factors affecting health-related quality of life (QOL) in injured patients with or without activity limitations., Methods: We used data of 1602 injured patients from 2014 to 2017 from the population-based Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, South Korea. QOL was measured using the EQ-5D-3L, and activity limitations were analyzed alongside predisposing factors (gender, age, education level, and marital status), enabling factors (basic living security, health insurance type, private insurance status, household income, and living with family), need factors (number of chronic diseases, subjective health status, and unmet medical needs), and health behaviors (smoking status, alcohol consumption, physical activity, and health screening). Data were analyzed using homogeneity testing, t tests, and logistic and multiple regression., Results: The mean EQ-5D index was 0.8 with activity limitations and 0.9 without activity limitations. In mobility domain, patients without activity limitations showed significant effects of age, education level, number of chronic diseases, subjective health status, and unmet medical needs on mobility, whereas patients with activity limitations only showed a significant effect of age. In self-care domain, age, household income, and number of chronic diseases showed significant factors on patients without activity limitations, but there was no significant factor associated with activity limitations. Among the factors affecting usual activities, gender was found to have a significant effect only on patients with activity limitations, and subjective health status was found to have a significant effect regardless of activity limitations. Among the factors affecting pain/discomfort, living with family only affected pain/discomfort in patients with activity limitations. Among the factors affecting anxiety/depression, gender and alcohol consumption had significant effects only on patients with activity limitations., Conclusion: Factors affecting the QOL of injured patients differed depending on whether patients had activity limitations. Therefore, when assessing injured patients, it may be necessary to ascertain the extent of activity limitations, and medical institutions and local communities need when implementing education and interventions to improve their QOL.

Health-promoting behaviors have been shown to enhance the quality of life across diverse populations. In this study, we examined the indirect effects of several health-promoting behaviors on the relationship between parenting stress and health-related quality of life in mothers of children with cerebral palsy (CP). A convenience sample of Korean mothers (N = 180) of children aged 10 months to 12 years with CP was recruited from clinical and school settings. Health-promoting behaviors were measured using the health-promoting lifestyle profile II, which is comprised of six subscales: health responsibility, physical activity, nutrition, spiritual growth, interpersonal relations, and stress management. Multiple mediation analyses were conducted to examine the mediating role of these behavioral categories. Spiritual growth (β = .56, p < .05) had an indirect effect on the relationship between parenting stress and physical health-related quality of life while spiritual growth (β = -1.00, p < .01) and stress management (β = -.80, p < .05) were found to mediate the association between parenting stress and mental health-related quality of life. The findings of multiple mediation analyses provide evidence of the influence of specific health-promoting behaviors on health-related quality of life, thereby informing the development of intervention programs for mothers of children with disabilities., (© 2020 Wiley Periodicals LLC.)

Aim: To examine the associations between compassion competence and missed nursing care, professional quality of life and quality of life among clinical nurses., Background: Compassionate care has been demonstrated to have a positive impact on outcomes for patients, employees and organisations. However, little is known about the associations between compassion competence and missed nursing care, professional quality of life and quality of life among clinical nurses., Methods: A survey was conducted with 1,556 Korean clinical nurses. The associations between compassion competence and missed nursing care, professional quality of life and quality of life were examined using multivariate linear regression., Results: Compassion competence was negatively associated with missed nursing care and burnout but positively associated with compassion satisfaction, secondary traumatic stress and quality of life., Conclusions: Our results extend the literature on the significant influence of compassionate care by providing evidence of its positive effects on missed nursing care, compassion satisfaction, burnout and quality of life in clinical nurses., Implications for Nursing Management: Nursing managers should implement programmes to improve compassion competence in clinical nurses to address missed nursing care and burnout and improve compassion satisfaction and quality of life, thus improving quality of care, patient experience and patient safety., (© 2020 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.)

Human and animal feces are important sources of various types of microbial contamination in water. Especially, enteric viruses, the major agents of waterborne infection, can attain long-term survival in water environments due to their strong resistance to various environmental factors including pH, salinity, and temperature. Coliphages are promising viral indicators for fecal contamination in water environments. Here, we investigated the seasonal and spatial distribution of male-specific and somatic coliphages in surface water and seawater at three major aquaculture areas, including Goseong Bay, Aphae Island, and Gomso Bay, in Republic of Korea over a period of 1 year. We selected 6 surface water and 14 seawater sampling sites for each study area and collected a total of 480 water samples from March 2014 to February 2015. Overall, surface water samples contained higher occurrences of coliphages than seawater samples. The high coliphage concentrations were detected in spring (March to May 2014). The differences in geographical features and patterns in land usage of the three aquaculture areas may have affected the coliphage concentration and occurrence. Moreover, environmental factors such as cumulative precipitation were strongly correlated with coliphage concentrations. Therefore, we suggest that further longitudinal studies on coliphage concentrations and distributions should be performed to support the application of coliphages in tracking fecal contamination in water.

Aim: Continuous program development and application are necessary in order to manage the health and address the problems of secondary metabolic disorders for people with intellectual disabilities. This study examines the effects of Tai Chi therapy on body mass index (BMI) and physical index among people with intellectual disabilities., Methods: A quasi-experimental study using a pretest-post-test control group, non-synchronized design was employed. Samples were in total 104 people with intellectual disabilities (experimental: n = 67, control: n = 37) in two facilities in South Korea. They were randomly allocated using a coin toss into the two groups. Tai Chi therapy as an experimental intervention was the Sun style Tai Chi exercise, which consists of the warm-up (5 min), main exercise (45 min), and finishing (meditation, 10 min). Tai Chi therapy was conducted twice a week for a total of 40 sessions for 5 months (1 hour each) by one professional instructor. Measures were general characteristics of study participants, BMI as degree of obesity, and physical index. Data were analyzed using the SPSS 21.0 program (descriptive statistics, χ 2 test, independent t test). A P value of less than .05 was considered statistically significant., Results: There were statistically significant differences on fasting blood glucose (t = 4.351, P < .001) and high-density lipoprotein (t = -2.052, P = .043) in the physical index between the two groups., Conclusions: Tai Chi therapy was an effective intervention for decreasing fasting blood glucose and for increasing high-density lipoprotein in those with intellectual disabilities. A few studies have explored the association between depression and sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL). This study was aimed to investigate the reciprocal relations between SSNHL and depression using a nationwide cohort of the Korean population. Subjects aged > 20 years from the Korean National Health Insurance Service-National Sample Cohort were enrolled from 2002 to 2013. In study I, a total of 60,178 depressed patients were matched 1:4 with 242,872 control I subjects. In study II, a total of 4,328 SSNHL patients were 1:4 matched with 17,312 control II subjects. They were matched for age, sex, income, and region of residence. The Charlson comorbidity index (CCI) was adjusted. Subgroup analysis was performed according to age and sex. The crude and adjusted CCI hazard ratios (HRs) of SSNHL in depressed patients (study I) and depression in SSNHL patients (study II) were analyzed using the stratified Cox proportional-hazard model. In study I, the depression group exhibited an elevated adjusted HR of SSNHL 1.16 times that of the control group (confidence interval [95% CI] = 1.02-1.31, P < 0.023). The middle-aged women subgroup demonstrated an increased risk of SSNHL within the depression group. In study II, the SSNHL group showed a higher adjusted HR of depression 1.29 times that of control II group (95% CI = 1.06-1.57, P = 0.010). The middle-aged women subgroup showed an elevated risk of depression in the SSNHL group. The risk of SSNHL was elevated in the depressed patients and the risk of depression was increased in the SSNHL patients.
