Athletic performance is a multifactorial trait influenced by environmental and genetic factors. Previous studies have identified various genes associated with athletic performance, including the β2-adrenergic receptor (ADRB2) gene, which has been consistently shown to be linked with elite athletic performance in diverse populations. The ADRB2 gene is known to play a key role in various biological systems, including cardiovascular, pulmonary, metabolic, and musculoskeletal functions. It acts by interacting with adrenaline. In particular, the ADRB2 rs1042713 (A > G) polymorphism has been associated with cardiovascular and respiratory functions. In addition, the association between the ADRB2 rs1042713 polymorphism and athletic performance has been reported. Thus, we conducted a case-control study to analyze the genetic association with ADRB2 rs1042713 polymorphism with 150 elite athletes, 116 college athletes, and 145 controls (control I) in the Korean population. The genotypes were determined by PCR-RFLP. As a result, we found significant differences in the distributions of genotype (p = 0.005) and allele (p = 0.002) frequencies between elite athletes and the control Ⅱ (control I + college athletes). We also found that the ADRB2 rs1042713 G/G genotype [odds ratio (OR) 2.42, 95% CI 1.384-4.235, p = 0.002] and the G allele (OR 1.58, 95% CI 1.184-2.098, p = 0.002) were significantly associated with elite athletic performance. Additionally, we observed a gender-specific association in female elite athletic performance (p = 0.0002 and p = 0.0002, respectively). In conclusion, our results suggest that the ADRB2 rs1042713 polymorphism may be associated with elite athletic performance in the Korean population. Background: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common childhood neurodevelopmental disorder, and the prevalence of ADHD among Korean children has attained about 8.5%. Various genetic factors can contribute to the etiology of the disease. Synaptophysin (SYP) regulates neurotransmitter release and synaptic plasticity. According to previous studies, several genetic polymorphisms on SYP were risk factors for ADHD., Objective: We investigated the effect of the SYP gene polymorphisms (rs2293945 and rs3817678) on ADHD in Korean children., Methods: In this study, we examined the case-control study in 150 ADHD cases and 322 controls. The genotyping of SYP gene polymorphisms was performed using polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP)., Results: Significant associations in the genotype and genetic models of SYP rs2293945 polymorphism between girls with ADHD and control girls were found. The girls with ADHD having the C/T genotype were significantly associated with ADHD. In the dominant model of rs3817678, C/T + T/T genotypes were significantly associated with ADHD. The haplotype analyses showed significant associations from haplotypes of rs2293945 T-rs3817678 G and rs2293945 C-rs3817678 A., Conclusion: Our results imply that the SYP rs2293945 C/T polymorphism in female participants may provide a possible effect on the genetic etiology of ADHD., (© 2023. Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common and heritable neurodevelopmental disorder. Particularly, ADHD is known to be related to the dopaminergic system. ADHD symptoms can appear when the dopamine binding affinity diminishes due to dopamine receptor abnormalities, such as the dopamine D 2 receptor (D 2 R). This receptor interacts with the adenosine A 2A receptor (A 2A R). The A 2A R acts as an antagonist of D 2 R, that is, the increased binding of adenosine with A 2A R inhibits the D 2 R activity. Furthermore, it is found that the single nucleotide polymorphisms of the adenosine A 2A receptor gene (ADORA2A) revealed a significant relationship with ADHD in various populations. Therefore, we examined the genetic relationship between ADORA2A polymorphisms (rs2297838, rs5751876, and rs4822492) and Korean ADHD children. A case-control study was performed for 150 cases and 322 controls. Genotyping of ADORA2A polymorphisms was conducted by PCR-RFLP. The results demonstrated that the rs5751876 TC genotype was associated with children with ADHD (p = 0.018). The rs2298383 CC genotype was significantly associated with children with ADHD/HI (p = 0.026). However, when Bonferroni correction was used, the significance vanished (p adjusted  = 0.054 and p adjusted  = 0.078, respectively). Haplotype analysis showed that TTC, TCC, and CTG demonstrated a significant difference between ADHD/C children and control groups (p adjusted  = 0.006, p adjusted  = 0.011, and p adjusted  = 0.028, respectively). Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a major neurodevelopmental disorder including multiple environmental and biological causes. It is generally reported that the prevalence of ADHD is 4-fold higher in boys than in girls. Previous studies have reported that the Y-linked genes have been significantly associated with neuropsychiatric disorders. Furthermore, several Y chromosome haplogroups have been reported to be related to the development of ADHD symptoms. Therefore, we analyzed the genetic correlation between the Y chromosome haplogroups and ADHD in the Korean boys. Our results showed that the Y chromosome haplogroup O2b (xO2b1) (p = 0.053) and O3a3c1 (p = 0.050) has a trend of borderline statistical significance. In subtype analysis, a significant association was observed between haplogroup O3a3c1 and the ADHD/C [odds ratio (OR), 3.43; 95 % confidence interval (CI), 1.336 - 8.782; p = 0.007]. However, this association could not pass the Bonferroni correction for multiple testing. Purpose: To investigate the risk of symptomatic urolithiasis requiring surgical treatment according to obesity and metabolic health status using a nationwide dataset of the Korean population., Materials and Methods: Of the 5,300,646 persons who underwent health examinations between the year 2009 and 2016, within one year after the health examination, 35,137 patients who underwent surgical treatment for urolithiasis were enrolled. Participants were classified as "obese" or "non-obese" using a body mass index (BMI) cutoff of 25 kg/m². People who developed ≥1 metabolic disease component in the index year were considered "metabolically unhealthy", while those with none were considered "metabolically healthy"., Results: Out of 34,330 participants excluding 843 missing, 16,509 (48.1%), 4,320 (12.6%), 6,456 (18.8%), and 7,045 (20.5%) subjects were classified into the metabolically healthy non-obese (MHNO), metabolically unhealthy non-obese (MUNO), metabolically healthy obese (MHO), and metabolically unhealthy obese (MUO) group, respectively. Mean BMI was 22.1±1.9 kg/m², 22.9±1.6 kg/m², 26.9±1.8 kg/m², and 27.9±2.4 kg/m² respectively. After adjusting the age and sex, the subjects in the MUNO group had an HR (95% CI) of 1.192 (1.120-1.268), those in the MHO group, 1.242 (1.183-1.305), and those in the MUO group, 1.341 (1.278-1.407) for either extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy or surgery, compared to those in the MHNO group., Conclusions: Metabolically healthy, obese individuals have a higher risk of developing symptomatic urolithiasis than non-obese, unhealthy, but have a lower risk than obese, unhealthy. Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common and heritable childhood psychiatric disorder. Recently, many studies reported a down-regulated hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis (HPA-axis) with low cortisol levels in children with ADHD. The FK506 binding protein 5 or FKBP5 gene regulates the negative feedback of the HPA-axis, and genetic variants in this gene showed an association with ADHD. We investigated the genetic association between FKBP5 gene polymorphisms and susceptibility to ADHD in Korean children. We conducted a case-control study with 150 ADHD children and 322 controls. Genotyping of FKBP5 rs9394309 and rs7748266 was performed by using polymerase chain reaction - restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP). Our results showed that rs7748266 polymorphism has significant genotype (p = 0.021) and allele (p = 0.009) frequency differences between children with ADHD and the control group. CT genotype [odds ratio (OR) 1.70, 95 % confidence interval (CI) 1.134-2.540, p = 0.010] and T allele (OR 1.54, 95 % CI 1.114-2.117, p = 0.009) were associated with increased risk of ADHD. In addition, dominant (p = 0.006) and over-dominant genetic (p = 0.016) models showed significant associations with ADHD. In the stratified analysis, a significant result was obtained from the girl samples (p = 0.048). The OR of the girls with ADHD with CT genotype was 2.29 (95 % CI 1.170-4.469, p = 0.014). In contrast to rs7748266 polymorphism, rs9394309 polymorphism did not show any significant result (p > 0.05). Haplotype analysis also revealed a significant difference of the TG haplotype for rs7748266 - rs9394309 (p = 0.028, global haplotype association p-value of 0.0091). Conclusively, we confirmed that FKBP5 gene polymorphisms were associated with ADHD in Korean children. Background: The folate metabolism that converts homocysteine to methionine is closely related to the accumulation of homocysteine. Increased homocysteine levels lead to an impaired antithrombotic function of the vascular endothelium and uterine-placental circulation, resulting in abnormal pregnancy outcomes. Previous studies have reported that gene polymorphisms in folate metabolism are associated with the development of preterm birth (PTB) in various populations., Objective: we performed a case-control study to evaluate the association between five polymorphisms in folate metabolic genes (MTHFR, MTR, MTRR, TCN2) and PTB., Methods: In this study, a total of 254 subjects were analyzed (111 patients with PTB and 143 women at ≥ 38 weeks of gestation). Genotype and allele frequency differences between patients and control groups and the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium were assessed using a Chi-square test. For evaluation indicators, odds ratios (ORs) of 95% confidence intervals (CI) were estimated. In addition, we analyzed the combined genotype frequencies of SNPs of folate-metabolizing genes to measure gene-gene interactions for PTB., Results: Our results showed that the MTR rs1805087 GG (p = 0.031), and TCN2 rs1801198 CG genotype (OR 0.53, 95% CI 0.288-0.980, p = 0.042) were significantly associated with PTB. The MTHFR rs4846049 AA showed a marginal trend toward significance (OR 0.15, 95% CI 0.018-1.205, p = 0.041). In particular, the combined genotypes, including MTHFR rs1537514 CC-MTRR rs1801394 GG, MTHFR rs1537514 CC-TCN2 rs1801198 CG, and MTR rs1805087 AA-TCN2 rs1801198 CG, have significant interactions with PTB (OR 0.49, 95% CI 0.248-0.992, p < 0.05)., Conclusion: The polymorphisms of folate metabolic genes may have a genetic association with the development of PTB in Korean women. We evaluate the risks of various urological disorders that require treatments according to obesity and metabolic health status using a nationwide dataset of the Korean population. 3,969,788 patients who had undergone health examinations were enrolled. Participants were classified as "obese" (O) or "non-obese" (NO) using a BMI cut-off of 25 kg/m2. People who developed ≥ 1 metabolic disease component in the index year were considered "metabolically unhealthy" (MU), while those with none were considered "metabolically healthy" (MH). There were classified into the MHNO, MUNO, MHO, and MUO group. In BPH, chronic renal disease, neurogenic bladder, any medication related to voiding dysfunction, alpha-blocker, and antidiuretics, age and gender-adjusted hazard ratio (HR) was highest in MUO, but higher in MUNO than in MHO. In stress incontinence, prostate surgery, and 5alpha-reductase, HR increased in the order of MUNO, MHO, and MUO. In prostatitis, anti-incontinence surgery, and cystocele repair, HR was higher in MHO than MUNO and MUO. In cystitis, cystostomy, and anticholinergics, HR was higher in MUNO and MUO than MHO. In conclusion, obesity and metabolic health were individually or collaboratively involved in urological disorders related to voiding dysfunction. Metabolic healthy obesity needs to be distinguished in the diagnosis and treatment of urological disorders.

Background: Demographic change and advances in technology affect transurethral surgery and outpatient procedures in the urologic field. There are few population-based studies that accurately assess the trend of transurethral surgery and outpatient procedures including diagnostic tests. We investigated the recent epidemiologic trends in transurethral surgeries and urological outpatient procedures from 2009 to 2016 in Korea using the entire population-based cohort., Methods: We analyzed medical service claim data of transurethral surgery, urological outpatient procedures submitted by medical service providers from the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service from 2009 to 2016., Results: Transurethral ureter surgery increased by 134.9% from 14,635 in 2009 to 34,382 in 2016 (B = 2,698; R² = 0.98; P < 0.001). The transurethral bladder surgery increased by 65.5% from 12,482 in 2009 to 20,658 in 2016 (B = 1,149; R² = 0.97; P < 0.001). Over the 8-years period, there were not significant changes in transurethral prostate (B = 43; R² = 0.04; P = 0.617) and urethral surgery (B =-12; R² = 0.18; P = 0.289). The significantly increasing trends in cystoscopy (B = 5,260; R² = 0.95; P < 0.001) and uroflowmetry (B = 53,942; R² = 0.99; P < 0.001) were observed during the 8-year period. There was no difference in bladder catheterization during the 8-year period. Urodynamic study (UDS: B =-2,156; R² = 0.77; P = 0.003) and electrical stimulation treatment (EST: B =-1,034; R² = 0.87; P < 0.001) significantly decreased., Conclusion: In Korea, transurethral ureter surgery and transurethral bladder surgery have been continuously increasing. Transurethral prostate surgery and transurethral urethral surgery remained constant with no increase or decrease. This study aimed to determine the differences in antibiotic usage patterns in the treatment of acute pyelonephritis according to hospital type and region in Korea.The claims database of the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service in Korea was used to select patients with the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision code N10 (acute tubulo-interstitial nephritis) or N12 (tubulo-interstitial nephritis, neither acute nor chronic) as the primary discharge diagnosis in 2010-2014. Usage of each class of antibiotics was expressed as the defined daily dose (DDD)/event.The average antibiotic usage per inpatient event was 11.3 DDD. The average antibiotic usage was the highest among patients admitted to tertiary hospitals (13.8 DDD), followed by those admitted to secondary hospitals (11.5 DDD), clinics (10.0 DDD), and primary hospitals (9.8 DDD). According to the geographic analyses, third-generation cephalosporins were highly prescribed in some southern regions; fluoroquinolones and aminoglycosides were highly prescribed in some centrally located regions of the Korean peninsula. The hotspots for carbapenem usage included Seoul and Gyeonggi province cluster and Busan cluster: these regions include the capital city and the second biggest city in Korea, respectively.In conclusion, the antibiotic usage patterns for acute pyelonephritis in Korea differ according to the hospital type and region.

Background: Traditional Korean medicine (TKM) has been employed for the treatment of children with cerebral palsy in Korea; however, the addition of TKM to usual rehabilitation (UR) treatment is hindered by insufficient evidence of clinical improvement with TKM in patients with cerebral palsy. In this study, we will evaluate the effectiveness and safety of integrative medicine rehabilitation (IMR) for cerebral palsy through a randomized controlled clinical study., Methods: Eighty children (2-6 years old) diagnosed with cerebral palsy will be recruited and randomly divided into groups A and B. Patients in group A will receive IMR with UR, while those in group B will receive only UR during weeks 1-12 of the study. IMR includes acupuncture treatment (head and limb acupuncture) three times a week and the administration of herbal medicine (Yukgunza-tang and Yukmijihwang-tang extracts) twice a day in parallel with UR. Evaluations will be conducted at the beginning of the study and at 12 and 24 weeks (follow-up). The primary outcome is the Gross Motor Function Measure-88 score, and the secondary outcomes are the scores for the Goal Attainment Scale, Korean Bayley Scales of Infant Development III, and the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory, and adverse events., Discussion: This will be the first pragmatic randomized controlled trial to evaluate the efficacy and safety of IMR in children with cerebral palsy in Korea. Background: Preterm birth (PTB) is a major adverse pregnancy outcome and largely contributes to increasing neonatal and maternal mortality. Genetic and environmental factors may play an important role in the development of PTB. Numerous studies have shown that immune genes related to the immune system, such as IL-6, IL-10, and TNFα, are associated with the occurrence of PTB., Objective: We examined genetic associations between IL-6 rs1800796, IL-10 rs1800872, and TNFα rs1800630 polymorphisms and PTB in Korean women., Methods: In this study, 115 PTB patients and 147 controls were analyzed. The genotyping of three SNPs was performed by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP)., Results: Our result showed that the rs1800872 polymorphism was significantly associated with the development of PTB in genotype frequency (odds ratio (OR) 1.71, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.01-2.90, p = 0.046). We also found a significant association in an analysis of combined genotypes (rs1800796 CC, rs1800872 CA, and rs1800630 CA) (OR 7.43, 95% CI 2.06-26.84, p = 0.001). In a correlation analysis, rs1800630 A allele was significantly related with the increased birth weight (g) within PTB patients (p = 0.005)., Conclusion: Our results imply possible relationships between the rs1800796, rs1800872, and rs1800630 polymorphisms and the development of PTB.

Background and Aims: Surgical resection for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is potentially curative, but long-term survival remains unsatisfactory. There is currently no effective neoadjuvant or adjuvant therapy for HCC. We sought to evaluate the impact of preoperative transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE) on long-term prognosis after surgical resection of huge HCCs (≥ 10 cm)., Methods: Using a multicenter database, consecutive patients who underwent curative-intent resection for huge HCC without macrovascular invasion between 2004 and 2014 were identified. The association between preoperative TACE with perioperative outcomes, long-term overall survival (OS), and recurrence-free survival (RFS) was assessed before and after propensity score matching (PSM)., Results: Among the 377 enrolled patients, 88 patients (23.3%) received preoperative TACE. The incidence of perioperative mortality and morbidity was comparable among patients who did and did not undergo preoperative TACE (3.4% vs. 2.4%, p= 0.704, and 33.0% vs. 31.1%, p= 0.749, respectively). PSM analysis created 84 matched pairs of patients. In examining the entire cohort as well as the PSM cohort, median OS (overall cohort: 32.8 vs. 22.3 months, p= 0.035, and PSM only: 32.8 vs. 18.1 months, p= 0.023, respectively) and RFS (12.9 vs. 6.4 months, p= 0.016, and 12.9 vs. 4.1 months, p= 0.009, respectively) were better among patients who underwent preoperative TACE vs. patients who did not. After adjustment for other confounding factors on multivariable analyses, preoperative TACE remained independently associated with a favorable OS and RFS after the resection of huge HCC., Conclusion: Preoperative TACE did not increase perioperative morbidity or mortality, yet was associated with an improved OS and RFS after liver resection of huge HCC (≥ 10 cm).

Objectives: Postmicturition dribble (PMD) is a very common symptom in males with lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) worldwide, but there is no adequate questionnaire to assess it. Therefore, we developed a questionnaire named the Hallym Post Micturition Dribble Questionnaire (HPMDQ) to assess PMD, and the aim of this study is to validate it., Methods: A series of consecutive male patients newly diagnosed with LUTS and over 40 years of age who visited any of 5 medical institutions were included. LUTS were assessed in all patients using the International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS), and PMD was assessed using the HPMDQ., Results: In total, 2134 male patients aged 40 to 91 years were included in this study. Of these patients, 1088 (51.0%) reported PMD. In the PMD group, the mean values for HPMDQ-Q1, HPMDQ-Q2, HPMDQ-Q3 and HPMDQ total score were 1.39, 1.10, 1.76 and 4.25, respectively. In the non-PMD group, the mean values of these scores were 0, 0.18, 1.52 and 1.58, respectively. The difference in HPMDQ scores between the 2 groups was statistically significant. PMD was significantly associated with the voiding symptoms of LUTS, prostate size and postvoid residual but not with storage symptoms., Conclusions: The HPMDQ, which consists of 5 questions (frequency, severity, bother, quality of life and response to treatment for PMD), was developed, and its use for assessing PMD is validated in this study. Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a multifactorial disorder with multiple environmental and biological etiologies, including genetic factors. Until now, several genetic variants have been reported to be significantly associated with ADHD. Recently, the relationship between mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) haplogroups and psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia has also been reported. However, currently there are no reports pertaining to the genetic association between mtDNA haplogroups and ADHD. Therefore, we performed an mtDNA haplogroup analysis of a total of 472 Korean children (150 Children with ADHD and 322 controls). The 20 East Asian specific mtDNA haplogroups were determined using the SNaPshot assay. We also sequenced the displacement loop (D-loop) region, position 15,971-613. Our results showed that haplogroup B4 was significantly associated with ADHD (OR, 1.90; 95% CI, 1.055-3.429; p = 0.031). A marginally significant association was found in subjects with ADHD and haplogroup B5 (OR, 0.26; 95% CI, 0.059-1.139; p = 0.041). When stratified based on gender, an association was also observed between haplogroup B5 and boys diagnosed with ADHD (OR, 0.17; 95% CI, 0.022-1.340; p = 0.048). Compared with boys, girls with ADHD carried an excess of the haplogroup D4b (OR, 4.83; 95% CI, 1.352-17.272; p = 0.014). Stratified analysis of subtypes also showed significant results (combined: haplogroup B4, p = 0.007; inattentive: haplogroup F, p = 0.022). Background and Objectives: The ACE gene encodes the angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE), a component of the renin-angiotensin system. Increased ACE activity may cause abnormal regulation of placental circulation and angiogenesis, resulting in adverse pregnancy outcomes. Previous studies have reported that the insertion/deletion (I/D) polymorphism of the ACE gene is associated with the development of preterm birth (PTB). However, results of the association between ACE gene I/D and PTB are inconsistent in various populations. Therefore, we performed a case-control study and a meta-analysis to evaluate the association between ACE I/D polymorphism and PTB. Materials and Methods: We analyzed a total of 254 subjects (111 patients with PTB and 143 women at ≥38 weeks gestation) for the case-control study. For the meta-analysis, we searched Google Scholar, PubMed, and NCBI databases with the terms "ACE," "angiotensin-converting enzyme," "preterm birth," "preterm delivery," and their combinations. Results: Our results of the case-control study indicated that ACE I/D polymorphism is significantly associated with PTBs in the overdominant genetic model (odds ratio (OR) 0.57, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.347-0.949, p = 0.029) and that the ID genotype of ACE I/D polymorphism has a protective effect for PTB (OR 0.57, 95% CI 0.333-0.986, p = 0.043). Similarly, the meta-analysis showed that the OR for the ACE gene ID genotype was 0.66 (95% CI 0.490-0.900, p < 0.01). Conclusion: The ACE gene ID genotype has a significant association with PTB and is a protective factor for PTB. Objectives: To provide surgical treatment trends for urinary stone disease in Korea., Methods: We analyzed medical service claim data of surgical treatments to urinary stone disease submitted by medical service providers from the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service from 2009 to 2016., Results: There was a significantly increasing trend among outpatients and inpatients for urinary stone disease from 2009 to 2016 (R 2  = 0.643, P = 0.017; R 2  = 0.575, P = 0.029). The number of shock wave lithotripsy for treating urinary stone disease increased by 16% from 89 553 in 2009 to 104 013 in 2016 (R 2  = 0.684). The number of ureteroscopic lithotripsy increased by 97% from 6106 in 2009 to 12 057 in 2016 (R 2  = 0.99). The number of flexible ureteroscopic lithotripsy increased by 16-fold from 219 in 2009 to 3712 in 2016 (R 2  = 0.756). The number of percutaneous nephrolithotomy increased by 99.7% from 919 in 2009 to 1835 in 2016 (R 2  = 0.987). The use of non-contrast and contrast-enhanced computed tomography in the diagnostic codes for urinary stone disease increased by 394.8% and 263.3% from 2009 to 2016, respectively (R 2  = 0.83; R 2  = 0.967). Conversely, the use of intravenous pyelography decreased 26.2% over the same period (R 2  = 0.945)., Conclusions: Outpatient and inpatient procedures for urinary stone disease have increased over the past 8 years in Korea. Shock wave lithotripsy is the most widely used treatment modality for urinary stone disease, and endoscopic surgical procedures are rapidly being implemented. Purpose: Specific meteorological factors, including air pollution in the form of particulate matter (PM), affect the development of otologic disease and have adverse effects on the cardiovascular and respiratory systems. This study investigated relationships between the development of sudden sensorineural hearing loss(SSNHL) and meteorological factor with air pollution including PM., Materials and Methods: The daily patient number in 2015 admitted to the hospital with SSNHL were extracted from the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service Bigdata in Busan. The meteorological factors and air pollution data of Busan area were obtained from meteorological stations in Busan. The relationship between the number of hospitalizations and the climatic factors was checked., Results: SSNHL patient group showed more common in women, and the highest rates were observed in patients in their 50s. The daily mean patient numbers were 2.27. The number of SSNHL patients in spring was statistically significantly higher than that in summer. The mean daily PM10 and PM2.5 concentrations were 48.0 and 29.4 μg/m 3 , respectively. The mean wind speed, maximum wind speed and daily atmospheric pressure range was weakly positively associated with SSNHL patient number. There were weak negative correlations between maximum PM2.5 and SSNHL admissions. The mean temperature and wind chill index showed non-significantly negative relationships with SSNHL admissions., Conclusions: In Busan area, statistically significant weak relationships were detected between the daily numbers of patients admitted to the hospital with SSNHL and meteorological data, including PM level. Anthropogenic activities have altered the geomorphological and ecological conditions of the Nakdong River Estuary (NRE) dramatically over the last century. The objectives of this study were to classify NRE sub-environments and to identify their unique ecological functions. The first step in classification was the establishment of 14 a priori sub-environmental groups based on landscape factors. Surface sediments obtained for these groups were analyzed for factors related to grain size and organic matter. Based on the results, the NRE was divided into two primary estuarine environment divisions: (1) a mixed marine and terrestrial environment influenced primarily by land; and (2) a principally marine environment influenced primarily by the ocean. Using multivariate analysis, we subdivided these primary estuarine divisions into six sub-environments, including Sub-1 and -2 in the former and Sub-3, -4, -5, and -6 in the latter., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier Ltd. Objective: To verify the efficacy and safety of tamsulosin 0.4 mg and tamsulosin 0.2 mg compared with those of placebo in patients with lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH)., Methods: A total of 494 patients from multiple centers participated in this double-blind, randomized, phase 3 trial. Eligible patients were randomly assigned to the tamsulosin 0.4 mg group, tamsulosin 0.2 mg group or placebo group. The International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS), maximum flow rate (Qmax), post-void residual (PVR) urine volume, blood pressure, heart rate and adverse events were compared among the three groups at 4, 8 and 12 weeks., Results: A total of 494 BPH patients were analyzed. There were no differences in the baseline characteristics among the three groups. After 12 weeks of treatment, total IPSS was improved in the 0.2 mg and 0.4 mg tamsulosin groups; however, the extent of improvement was greater in the 0.4 mg group than in the 0.2 mg group (0.4 mg: -9.59 vs. 0.2 mg: -5.61; least-squares mean difference [95% confidence interval]: -3.95 [-5.01, -2.89], p < .0001). In addition, in the patients with severe symptoms (IPSS ≥20), total IPSS was improved the most in the 0.4 mg group (-11.27 ± 5.00, p < .0001). Qmax and PVR were improved in the 0.4 mg and 0.2 mg groups; however, the differences were not statistically significant between treatment groups. No patients experienced any serious adverse effects in any of the three groups., Conclusions: Tamsulosin 0.4 mg and 0.2 mg appear to be superior to placebo treatment, and tamsulosin 0.4 mg is more effective than 0.2 mg in terms of total IPSS improvement. Tamsulosin 0.4 mg has favorable efficacy and tolerability in Asian men with symptomatic BPH. ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT02390882.

Objective : Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common neurodevelopmental disorder. The genetic cause of ADHD is still unclear, but the dopaminergic, serotonergic, and noradrenergic pathways have shown a strong association. In particular, monoamine oxidase A (MAOA) plays an important role in the catabolism of these neurotransmitters, suggesting that the MAOA gene is associated with ADHD. Therefore, we evaluated the relationship between the MAOA gene polymorphisms (uVNTR and rs6323) and ADHD. Materials and methods : We collected a total of 472 Korean children (150 ADHD cases and 322 controls) using the Korean version of the Dupaul Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Rating Scales (K-ARS). Genotyping was performed by PCR and PCR-RFLP. The Behavior Assessment System for Children Second Edition (BASC-2) was used to evaluate the problem behaviors within ADHD children. Results : We observed significant associations between the rs6323 and ADHD in girls ( p < 0.05) and the TT genotype was observed as a protective factor against ADHD in the recessive model (OR 0.31, 95% CI 0.100⁻0.950, p = 0.022). The 3.5R-G haplotype showed a significant association in ADHD boys ( p = 0.043). The analysis of subtype also revealed that the 4.5R allele of uVNTR was a risk factor for the development of ADHD in the combined symptom among girls (OR 1.87, 95% CI 1.014⁻3.453, p = 0.031). In the BASC-2 analysis, the MAOA uVNTR polymorphism was associated with activities of daily living in ADHD boys ( p = 0.017). Conclusion : These results suggest the importance of the MAOA gene polymorphisms in the development of ADHD in Korean children. A larger sample set and functional studies are required to further elucidate of our findings.

Contamination in coastal aquifer plains is of great concern in many countries given that non-aqueous phase liquids (NAPLs) have polluted numerous sites through accidental oil spills or improper disposal. We have developed a method to remove pollutants such as NAPLs from sandy sediment samples collected from the Mandol area of Gomso Bay in western South Korea. The sediments were collected from around the diffuser in a two-dimensional (2D) acrylic reaction apparatus, and these contained a total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) concentration of 89.3 ppm (mg/kg media). The maximum perchloroethylene (PCE) concentration was 398.51 ppm in the unsaturated zone and 0.77 ppm in the saturated zone. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were detected between 20 and 44 hour. However, non-volatile contaminants remained in the sediments after treatment. In situ air sparging (IAS) combined with soil vapor extraction (SVE), transformation from sorbed and nonaqueous phases to the vapor phase, is incomplete when treatment is performed using a pervasive air flow for sediments such as the sand of Mandol. During air transformation, the groundwater flow conditions increased the rate of contaminant removal. Although pilot-scale testing in the field site was fluctuated due to the heterogeneous of sediments condition, this 2D study found that the proposed method can alter the measurable geophysical properties of NAPLs. These findings demonstrate that IAS combined with SVE in the saturated zone is an effective technology for aquifer remediation high applicability of sandy coastal sediments contaminated by NAPLs.

The brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is the most abundant neurotrophin in the brain., Aims: The aim of the present study was to investigate the association between the genotype and alleles for the BDNF gene in Korean children with ADHD., Methods: The sample consisted of 180 ADHD children and 159 control children. We diagnosed ADHD according to the DSM-IV. ADHD symptoms were evaluated with Conners' Parent Rating Scales and Dupaul Parent ADHD Rating Scales. Blood samples were taken from the 339 subjects, DNA was extracted from blood lymphocytes, and polymerase chain reaction was performed for BDNF rs6265, rs11030101, rs10835210, rs7103873, and rs2030324 polymorphisms. Alleles and genotype frequencies were compared using the Chi-square test. We compared the allele and genotype frequencies of the BDNF gene polymorphism in the ADHD and control groups., Results: This study showed that there was a significant correlation among the allele frequencies of the rs11030101 and rs10835210 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) (odds ratio=0.61, 95% confidence interval=0.39-0.96, p=0.034), but the final conclusions are not definite. Follow-up studies with larger patient or pure subgroups are expected. These results suggest that the BDNF allelic structure may impact ADHD symptoms.

The aim of the present study was to investigate the association between the genetic type and alleles for the monoamine oxidase (MAO) gene in Korean children with ADHD. The sample consisted of 180 ADHD children and 159 control children. We diagnosed ADHD according to DSM-IV. This study showed that there was a significant correlation among the frequencies of the rs5906883 (odds ratio [OR]=1.47, 95% confidence interval [CI]=1.08-2.00, p=0.014) and the rs3027407 (OR=1.41, 95% CI=1.03-1.91, p=0.029) alleles of MAO, but the final conclusions are not definite. Follow-up studies with larger patient or pure subgroups are expected. These results suggested that MAO might be related to ADHD symptoms.

We analyzed the variation of eighteen miniSTR loci in 411 randomly chosen individuals from Korea to increase the probability that a degraded sample can be typed, as well as to provide an expanded and reliable population database. Six multiplex PCR systems were developed (multiplex I: D1S1677, D2S441 and D4S2364; multiplex II: D10S1248, D14S1434 and D22S1045; multiplex III: D12S391, D16S3253 and D20S161; multiplex IV: D3S4529, D8S1115 and D18S853; multiplex V: D6S1017, D11S4463 and D17S1301; multiplex VI: D5S2500, D9S1122 and D21S1437). Allele frequencies and forensic parameters were calculated to evaluate the suitability and robustness of these non-CODIS miniSTR systems. No significant deviation from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium expectations were observed, except for D4S2364, D5S2500 and D20S161 loci. A multidimensional scaling plot based on allele frequencies of the six miniSTR loci (D1S1677, D2S441, D4S2364, D10S1248, D14S1434 and D22S1045) showed that Koreans appeared to have most genetic affinity with Chinese and Japanese than to other Eurasian populations compared here. The combined probability of match calculated from the 18 miniSTR loci was 2.902 × 10(-17), indicating a high degree of polymorphism. Thus, the 18 miniSTR loci can be suitable for recovering useful information for analyzing degraded forensic casework samples and for adding supplementary genetic information for a variety of analyses involving closely related individuals where there is a need for additional genetic information., (Copyright © 2013 Elsevier Ltd and Faculty of Forensic and Legal Medicine. Purpose: Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths in Korea. The objective of the present study was to develop an individualized risk prediction model for lung cancer in Korean men using population-based cohort data., Methods: From a population-based cohort study of 1,324,804 Korean men free of cancer at baseline, the individualized absolute risk of developing lung cancer was estimated using the Cox proportional hazards model. We checked the validity of the model using C statistics and the Hosmer-Lemeshow chi-square test on an external validation dataset., Results: The risk prediction model for lung cancer in Korean men included smoking exposure, age at smoking initiation, body mass index, physical activity, and fasting glucose levels. The model showed excellent performance (C statistic = 0.871, 95% CI = 0.867-0.876). Smoking was significantly associated with the risk of lung cancer in Korean men, with a four-fold increased risk in current smokers consuming more than one pack a day relative to non-smokers. Age at smoking initiation was also a significant predictor for developing lung cancer; a younger age at initiation was associated with a higher risk of developing lung cancer., Conclusion: This is the first study to provide an individualized risk prediction model for lung cancer in an Asian population with very good model performance. In addition to current smoking status, earlier exposure to smoking was a very important factor for developing lung cancer. Since most of the risk factors are modifiable, this model can be used to identify those who are at a higher risk and who can subsequently modify their lifestyle choices to lower their risk of lung cancer.

Nine miniSTR loci were analyzed in 191 unrelated individuals from Korea using three multiplex PCR systems (multiplex I: D1S1677, D2S441 and D4S2364; multiplex II: D10S1248, D14S1434 and D22S1045; multiplex III: D12S391, D16S3253 and D20S161). Due to the short PCR amplicons (< 145 bp), miniSTR systems can effectively be used in forensic analysis with highly degraded DNAs. Allele frequencies and forensic parameters were calculated to evaluate their usefulness in forensic casework. The Exact Test demonstrated that all loci surveyed here were found to be no deviation from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium, except two miniSTR markers (D4S2364 and D16S3253). When we compared the distribution of genetic variation of six miniSTR markers (D1S1677, D2S441, D4S2364, D10S1248, D14S1434 and D22S1045), the Exact Test revealed significant differences (P < 0.05) between the Korean sample studied here and almost all of other samples of East Asian and European populations. The combined probability of match calculated from nine miniSTR loci was 1.28 x 10(-8), which is high degree of polymorphism. Thus, the miniSTR system, combined with other valuable miniSTR markers, may be suitable for recovering useful information in analyzing degraded DNA samples.
