Global declines in mangroves, seagrasses, and corals threaten the provisioning of ecosystem services to coastal communities. However, potential feedbacks between these ecosystems are poorly understood owing to a lack of studies exploring functional links between these frequently coupled nearshore tropical ecosystems. To better understand these links, we sampled seawater temperature, salinity, and pH in addition to particulate organic carbon, particulate organic nitrogen, and their respective stable isotope composition (δ13C and δ15N) monthly from July 2018 to June 2019 at sites ranging from inshore to offshore in La Parguera Natural Reserve, Puerto Rico. We observed persistent, year-round warmer, more acidic, and higher particulate organic matter seawater at the most inshore Bioluminescent Bay station compared to sites further offshore. Particulate organic carbon values ranged from a maximum of 764 mg/m3 at the most inshore station to a minimum of 53.96 mg/m3 at the most offshore station while particulate organic nitrogen ranged from 166 mg/m3 at the most inshore station to 6.39 mg/m3 at the most offshore station. Biogeochemical variability across spatial scales largely followed gradients in biological and physical controls, with limited differences between the more offshore coral reef sites and the most intense biogeochemical modification occurring in the shallowest and most nearshore stations. Limited temporal variability was observed for most parameters except for seasonal variations in temperature, salinity, and pH. Particulate organic matter stable isotope composition were slightly enriched at inshore stations and suggested a mixture of primarily marine allochthonous and autochthonous organic matter sources. The importance of heterotrophy for coral resilience to warming and acidification suggests this localized nutrition-rich albeit warmer and acidified waters in nearshore mangrove and seagrass ecosystems is an important functional link to nearshore corals with the potential to modulate coral resilience to ocean warming and acidification. Successful knowledge-based economic models rely on synergy between government, industry and academia. This paper reviews the efforts to convert the island of Puerto Rico from a manufacturing to a high-tech manufacturing/research and development economy, with information technology and biotechnology as the main development strongholds. The formation of clusters and partnership between government, industry and academia are essential requirements for successful economies. The strategic approach adopted in Puerto Rico is exemplified by the university-industry partnership developed by the University of Puerto Rico's Industrial Biotechnology programme in cooperation with locally established biotechnology industries. Ocean acidification is changing surface water chemistry, but natural variability due to nearshore processes can mask its effects on ecosystem responses. We present an approach of quantitatively resolving net ecosystem metabolism from an array of long‐term time series stations, offering perhaps the longest record of such processes over a reef to date. We used 8 and 6 yr of in situ, high‐quality frequency observations to characterize the changes in dissolved inorganic carbon and oxygen in La Parguera, Puerto Rico and Cheeca Rocks, Florida, respectively. Net respiration and net dissolution are the dominant metabolic processes at both systems, with a narrow window of ~ 4 months under net calcification. The annual mean net ecosystem calcification (NEC) rates for La Parguera (−0.68 ± 0.91 kg CaCO3 m−2 yr−1) and Cheeca Rocks (−0.48 ± 0.89 kg CaCO3 m−2 yr−1) were on the lower end of typical NEC ranges determined for other reef areas using chemistry‐ and census‐based approaches. At Cheeca Rocks, 53% of the variance in NEC can be explained by net ecosystem production (NEP) and 30% by aragonite saturation state (Ωarag). At La Parguera, NEC is primarily driven by changes in NEP. The linear relationship between NEC and NEP showed a significant slope (± standard error) of 1.00 ± 0.005 and 0.88 ± 0.04 for La Parguera and Cheeca Rocks, respectively. These results suggest that NEP appears to play a prominent role on NEC, and Ωarag probably is not the most informative measure to monitor when attempting to resolve the long‐term impacts of ocean acidification. A change detection analysis utilizing Very High-resolution (V.H.R.) satellite imagery was performed to evaluate the changes in coastal vegetation in La Parguera, southwestern Puerto Rico, attributable to the increased influx of pelagic Sargassum and its accumulations in cays, bays, inlets and near-shore environments. Imagery was co-registered, corrected for atmospheric effects and masked for water and land. A Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (N.D.V.I.) was used to evaluate the changes in coastal vegetation. N.D.V.I. was used to calculate the differences from 2010 baseline imagery to potential hurricane plus Sargassum impacts (2018 image) and potential Sargassum impacts (2020 image). Results show a total decrease in N.D.V.I. from 2010 to 2020 of 28%, or 3,687,493 m2, and these changes were also observed in true colour images. Total decrease in values in N.D.V.I. was higher from 2018 to 2020, especially for the Isla Cueva site (233,807 m2), and were consistent with the field observations and drone surveys conducted since 2018 in the area. Areas prone to Sargassum accumulation were also identified. This approach provides a quantifiable method to evaluate Sargassum impacts to the coastal vegetation and benthic composition using change detection of V.H.R. images and to separate these effects from other extreme events. We investigated the seasonal carbonate chemistry variability within a semi-enclosed tropical mangrove lagoon in southwestern Puerto Rico. Biweekly measurements of seawater temperature, salinity, total alkalinity (TA), and dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) were conducted from 2014 to 2018. We describe the possible mechanisms driving the observed variability by correlating the DIC/TA ratio with pH and Ωarg, suggesting that the mean pH (7.87 ± 0.09) and aragonite saturation state (Ωarg, 2.96 ± 0.47) of the mangrove lagoon negatively affected calcification. The measured pCO2 and DIC/TA ratios indicate that heterotrophic activity was the primary driver for persistent acidification, which reached its maximum expression during the wet season. We conclude that mangrove lagoons with limited seawater exchange and high carbon input will not mitigate ocean acidification. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Major Atlantic hurricanes Irma, Jose, and Maria of 2017 reached their peak intensity in September while traveling over the tropical North Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea, where both atmospheric and ocean conditions were favorable for intensification. In situ and satellite ocean observations revealed that conditions in these areas exhibited (i) sea surface temperatures above 28°C, (ii) upper-ocean heat content above 60 kJ cm-2, and (iii) the presence of low-salinity barrier layers associated with a larger-than-usual extension of the Amazon and Orinoco riverine plumes. Proof-of-concept coupled ocean--hurricane numerical model experiments demonstrated that the accurate representation of such ocean conditions led to an improvement in the simulated intensity of Hurricane Maria for the 3 days preceding landfall in Puerto Rico, when compared to an experiment without the assimilation of ocean observations. Without the assimilation of ocean observations, upper-ocean thermal conditions were generally colder than observations, resulting in reduced air--sea enthalpy fluxes--enthalpy fluxes are more realistically simulated when the upper-ocean temperature and salinity structure is better represented in the model. Our results further showed that different components of the ocean observing system provide valuable information in support of improved TC simulations, and that assimilation of underwater glider observations alone enabled the largest improvement over the 24 h time frame before landfall. Our results, therefore, indicated that ocean conditions were relevant for more realistically simulating Hurricane Maria's intensity. This article proposes an analysis of Wilfredo Mattos Cintrón's seventh noir novel (novela negra),Las dos muertes de Catalino Ríos(2012), and a comparison of its poetics with that of Manuel Zeno Gandía'sLa charca(1894). The article questions the naturalist label often applied to Zeno Gandía's novel and instead views it as a nascent hardcore detective novel (protonovela negra). An assessment of coastal information needs in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands identified real-time wave data and improved wave forecasts as essential for supporting nearshore operations in the region. After deployment of operational wave-measuring buoys off the north, south, east, and west coasts of the Puerto Rico-Virgin Islands archipelago, the Simulating WAves Nearshore (SWAN) model was implemented for the region. The main purpose of its implementation is to provide for data needs in areas not well represented by the buoys as well as for filling the nearshore gap not addressed by the operational National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Multigrid WAVEWATCH III (NMWWIII) model forecast. The model consists of a nesting between WWIII and SWAN where oceanic boundary conditions in the form of two-dimensional wave spectra are supplied by the NMWWIII model. In this study we present results from two model-validation experiments under varying physical-forcing scenarios, one in which swell waves dominate (Rincón) and one in which wind swell dominates (Ponce). The results show good agreement between the observed and the modeled wave field for the Rincón domain, on Puerto Rico's northwest coast and facing the Atlantic Ocean, which indicates that appropriate boundary conditions are being obtained from NMWWIII and propagated correctly by SWAN into nearshore areas. Results for the Ponce domain, in Puerto Rico's southern coast and facing the Caribbean Sea, highlight the need for more accurate high-resolution wind products to properly resolve the wind-driven wave field dominating this area. Objective: To examine the utilization of health services and prescription patterns among patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) followed by primary care physicians and rheumatologists in Puerto Rico. Methods: The insurance claims submitted by physicians to a health insurance company of Puerto Rico in 2003 were examined. The diagnosis of lupus was determined by using the International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision, code for SLE (710.0). Of 552,733 insured people, 665 SLE patients were seen by rheumatologists, and 92 were followed by primary care physicians. Demographic features, selected co-morbidities, healthcare utilization parameters, and prescription patterns were examined. Fisher exact test, χ² test, and analysis of variances were used to evaluate differences between the study groups. Results: SLE patients followed by rheumatologists had osteopenia/osteoporosis diagnosed more frequently than did patients followed by primary care physicians. The frequency of high blood pressure, diabetes mellitus, hypercholesterolemia, coronary artery disease, and renal disease was similar for both groups. Rheumatologists were more likely to order erythrocyte sedimentation rate, anti-dsDNA antibodies, and serum complements. No differences were observed for office or emergency room visits, hospitalizations, and utilization of routine laboratory tests. Rheumatologists prescribed hydroxychloroquine more frequently than did primary care physicians. The use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, cyclooxygenase-2 inhibitors, glucocorticoids, azathioprine, cyclophosphamide, and methotrexate was similar for both groups. Conclusion: Overall, the utilization of health services and prescription patterns among SLE patients followed by primary care physicians and rheumatologists in Puerto Rico are similar. However, rheumatologists ordered SLE biomarkers of disease activity and prescribed hydroxychloroquine more frequently than did primary care physicians. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Cooperative learning (CL) has been lauded over the years as one of the most successful teaching/learning strategies employed by professors of science, mathematics, engineering and technology (SMET) in institutions of higher education throughout Puerto Rico. The goal of the research project presented here was to examine the effectiveness of CL as perceived by SMET faculty who use it in the classroom at member institutions of the Puerto Rico Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (PR-LSAMP). As a long-term goal, PR-LSAMP researchers desired to use the findings to understand and address the training needs of their SMET faculty. Data was gathered on faculty members' use of CL and their perceptions of the effect of CL strategies on student performance and attitudes. Principal survey results showed that over 60% of faculty felt confident in their knowledge of CL theory and role assignment, although somewhat less confident in conflict resolution, grading activities and individual accountability. Fifty percent (50%) reported using the strategy very often or often (primarily for the exploration and learning of new concepts, in team projects and presentations, and in quizzes). Forty-one percent (41%) described their experience in implementing CL as excellent or very good. In addition, faculty perceived more positive than negative changes in student performance and attitudes. Based on study results, researchers concluded that the success of cooperative learning in PR-LSAMP institutions signals the beginning of a paradigm shift in the islands' educational system. Although the marine environment is recognized as a net source of nitrous oxide to the atmosphere, current global budgets appear to underestimate the marine source of this radiatively active gas. Mangrove forests occupy a significant fraction of the tropical land/sea interface and receive high inputs of terrestrial nitrogen. Anthropogenic activities increase nitrogen input to mangrove sediments thereby enhancing microbial nitrogen metabolism. Elevated rates of nitrous oxide fluxmight therefore be expected. Our experimental determinations of nitrous oxide flux from mangrove sediments yield rates of between 0.12 and 7.8 Mu mol N2O m-2 h-1; values which are between 2 and 135 times greater than those reported previouslyfor intertidal estuarine sediments. Nitrous oxide yield from these sediments varies greatly in response to both the magnitude and chemical nature of the sediment nitrogen source. Rates appear to be greater when reduced nitrogen is the dominant substrate and nitrification is the main source of nitrous oxide compared to sediments where nitrate and nitrite predominate and nitrous oxide arises from microbial denitrification."
