This article results from research comprised of fieldwork ethnography, participant observation, collection of life stories, interviews and testimonials of refugees, asylum seekers and migrants, living in Portugal. We focus on a particular experience of the research named Living in a Different Culture (LDC), which took place between 2017 and 2019, aimed at participants who shared the goal of becoming university students, before migration. LDC supported students who wanted to continue their academic training and those wanting to find alternative pathways of inclusion and autonomy, using new academic skills and knowledge. The project included a tailored course in Portuguese society and culture, created with an anthropological lens, Portuguese language classes and other disciplines. Several of the students who attended the course, in both academic years, continued their studies, or found work within their area of expertise. Obstacles highlighted in the paper perpetuated cycles of precarious living and structural violence. We argue that by devaluing migrants and refugees' knowledges and skills, host society loses important resources to its own development. We conclude by stating that projects such as LDC require a long-term commitment with interinstitutional support, a sustainability strategy, and a decolonial mindset. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The difficulties of adapting to the first year of higher education have been the object of reflection in various studies, which generally place emphasis on their transitional and developmental challenges. In the case of students studying outside their countries of origin, in addition to the problems of transition and adaptation to situations of greater autonomy, their integration into a culture with traits different from their own, in a language at a level that is higher than what is required for daily survival, must also be considered. This paper analyses the fact that, in the presence of students from the PALOP, expectations were created, regarding their academic success and interaction with professors, which have only been partially met. This question had to be addressed to find answers as to these students' level of mastery of Portuguese. Through a diagnostic test and a survey applied to a group of students from the PALOP studying for different degrees at Guarda Polytechnic, this study aimed to determine whether Portuguese is their native language and the kinds of linguistic difficulties encountered in their contact with native speakers of Portugal, namely professors. In modern societies, the question of identity is central when considering the need of spreading a cultural identity, which is fairly accepted by all. Gypsies, who are culturally distinguished by the dominant culture, have survived by accepting their past and certain symbols passed from generation to generation while adopting aspects of modern society.
