This study investigates the factors driving football players with identical training experience and genetics to have dramatically different career paths. We studied two paired cases from a pool of 32 talented U-20 players who were twice World Champions. The first paired case is a set of monozygotic twins that played football for exactly the same period of time yet only one of them was selected for the national team. The second paired case refers to an outstanding player who got injured and withdrew from his football career and the player who replaced him in the national team. Semi-structured interviews were conducted and then analyzed inductively. The results provide a description of opportunities (affordances) that could only be taken by those who were ready to act skillfully when such rare event occurred. To act on such affordances (or not) may dramatically change the outcome of a player's career. These results suggest that expert performance and high achievement emerge from circumstances resulting from the self-organization of several performer-environmental factors. Acting on such opportunities (affordances) implies being perceptually attuned to and ready for unpredictable events. This research builds on the ecological dynamics approach and provides a basis for further understanding of expertise and expert performance.

The value of sport is extensively documented; however, there are still groups who do not have the opportunity to enjoy the benefits of sport due to lack of investment, particularly important for people with disabilities. A gap persists in understanding the effectiveness of inclusive sport programs in addressing equity-related targets, particularly on the effective methods of financing inclusion in sport for individuals with disabilities. Therefore, providing a platform for stakeholders to express their perspectives becomes crucial. Through focus groups and the World Café approach, the aim of this study was to gather insights from athletes, parents, professionals, and sport club managers regarding the funding of inclusive sport for people with disabilities. A total of 72 participants took part in nine focus groups in Portugal, Slovenia, and Hungary: 27 athletes with disabilities, 22 coaches, other technicians and parents, and 23 club managers/directors. Findings were divided into five topics: (1) perspectives on current funding satisfaction; (2) perspectives on sources and criteria for funding; (3) perspectives on ideal funding; (4) perspectives on ideas to reach decision-makers; and (5) proposals on ideal criteria for funding. Based on these findings, six measurable criteria for fair funding allocation were suggested that could develop a properly weighted system of criteria for decision-makers to assess the allocation of funding among inclusive sport organizations with the potential to catalyze broader policy and societal changes. Based on a socio-ecological framework for physical education (PE), this study explored and analysed the perspectives of physically active and inactive adolescent boys and girls with different socioeconomic status (SES), regarding the meanings that PE had on their physical activity (PA) lifestyles throughout childhood and adolescence. An interpretative and qualitative design was adopted and operationalised through an individual two-hours in-depth interview. Thematic analysis identified five main themes that distinguish active from inactive adolescents: 'Early experiences of PE at primary school'; 'PE experiences in middle and secondary school'; 'Friendly, professional and pedagogue. That's what I want from my PE teacher'; 'Friends in PE and PA'; 'Active lifestyles? Are schools and PE ready for making a difference …'. Regardless of the lifestyle, girls revealed more PE negative experiences, related to uninteresting and competitive activities, groups' constitution and logistic factors. SES played a major role on their PA and PE experiences, with low SES adolescents having limited opportunities inclusively within the primary school PE context. This study provides evidence for the importance of promoting positive PE and PA experiences in early years. Based on adolescents' voices, several recommendations are discussed that can be considered for improving PE professionals' effectiveness in promoting active lifestyles.

Background: Referees' activity can be an instrument for training students with an impact on health-related physical fitness (PF). This study aimed to investigate the differences in PF and body composition between students without sports practice (G1), students with regular sports practice (G2), and student referees in team invasion games (G3). Methods: This study followed a cross-sectional design. The sample comprised 45 male students between 14 and 20 years old (16.40 ± 1.85). Three groups (G1, G2, and G3) of 15 participants each were selected. PF was assessed by a 20 m shuttle run, change-of-direction test, and standing long jump. Body composition was determined by body mass index (BMI; kg/m2) and the percentage of body fat (%BF) predicted by skinfold. Results: After controlling for age as a covariate, the block of variables used to characterize PF was statistically different between sports practice groups favoring student referees (p < 0.001; r = 0.26). Similar results were achieved for body composition (i.e., BMI and %BF) (p < 0.001; r = 0.17). However, when the dependent variables were evaluated separately, there were only differences between groups in %BF (p = 0.007; r = 0.21). Student referees had statistically significantly lower values than the remaining groups. Conclusion: Refereeing activity benefits PF related to health and performance, including body composition. Background: Research on composition and physical fitness is lacking in school-aged children from Madeira. This study aimed to examine the frequencies of overweight and obese participants and, in addition, to compare the fitness levels of Madeira youth with reference data. Methods: The sample comprised 521 participants (n = 258 boys; n = 263 girls) aged 10.0–18.9 years old. Methods: Height and weight were measured. Body mass index (BMI) was calculated, and percent fat was derived from skinfolds. Tests detailed on FITESCOLA battery were performed. BMI was plotted against U.S. reference data and physical assessment contrasted with the cut-off points of FITESCOLA protocol and corresponding data developed in Portuguese youth. Results: The percentages of overweight and obesity were 15% (overweight) and 14% (obesity) for boys and 16% (overweight) and 6% (obesity) for girls. The median values of fat mass percentage were closely related to the cut-off standards; however, substantial variation was noted. Boys and girls tended to be below the recommendations of cardiorespiratory fitness. Conclusions: Sport participation should be promoted in Madeira to attain acceptable values of body composition and physical fitness levels. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Football is known for its fast-paced and intensive activities from a professional standpoint, exposing professional football players to a high injury risk across their sportive careers. This study aimed to describe and characterise the sportive injuries of a First Portuguese Football League professional football team over three consecutive seasons. Seventy-one male professional football players (age = 25.7 ± 3.4 years; stature = 181.6 ± 6.5 cm; body mass = 77 ± 7.2 kg) participated in this study, comprising eight goalkeepers (11.3%), 20 defenders (28.2%), 17 midfielders (23.9%), and 26 forwards (36.6%). All players were followed throughout seasons 2019/2020, 2020/2021, and 2021/2022. Descriptive statistics were used to summarise the data collected. Absolute values present the number of football players and the total number of injuries. The demographic data of the participants are presented by mean and standard deviation. The frequency of the injuries by age, sectorial position, type, zone, specific location, laterality, mechanism, severity, recurrence, and occurrence are represented by absolute values and their percentages. In total, 84 injuries were recorded. Each player missed an average of 16.6 days per injury. Lower limbs were massively affected by injuries across all three seasons, mainly with muscular injuries in the quadriceps and hamstrings and sprains in the tibiotarsal structure. The injury incidence was considerably higher in official matches than in training sessions. The two moments of the season that proved most conducive to injuries were the months of July and January. Our results emphasise the importance of monitoring sports performance, including injury occurrence and assisting in identifying risk factors in professional football. In football, knee and hip muscle strength assessment have been recommended for injury prevention (Mosler et al., 2017; Namazi et al., 2019). Additionally, bilateral strength differences in the knee and hip joints have been related to an increased risk of injury. The aims of this study were threefold: (1) to compare knee and hip muscle strength performance between professional players competing at different levels; (2) to assess bilateral strength differences according to the preferred leg (PL) and the non-preferred leg (NPL); and (3) to compare knee and hip muscle strength performance in two-time moments of the season. This study considered 33 professional football players: 13 were in the elite group (EG) competing in the First Portuguese Football League, and 20 were in the sub-elite group (SEG) competing in the Fourth Portuguese Football League. Participants were assessed for body composition, isokinetic knee strength at 60º/s, and hip adduction strength at two-time moments (TM) separated by five months. Peak torque normalised by bodyweight (PT/BW) of knee extensors (KE) and knee flexors (KF) were used for analysis. The differences between groups in strength were analysed using the Mann-Whitney U test. The Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test was conducted to verify differences between the performance of the PL and NPL in each group and to compare the performance between TM1 and TM2. At TM1, the EG presented a significantly better performance in KF PT/BW and hip adduction strength for the PL and NPL (p ≤ 0.01). In TM2, the EG performed substantially better in KE PT/BW and KF PT/BW (p ≤ 0.01). In both groups, no substantial bilateral strength differences were observed in knee and hip adduction performance. From TM1 to TM2, significant increases were found in knee strength in both groups (p ≤ 0.01). Overall, the EG players outperformed their lowerdivision peers in strength assessments significantly. The results also indicate significant knee and hip muscle strength increases during the season (except for the EG in hip adduction strength), probably as a response to the exposure to training and competition. Adolescent characteristics of young adult soccer players (n = 35) were compared with those of youth teammates (n = 124) no longer involved in soccer. Former U-13 players active in soccer as young adults were slightly later in maturation and performed better in several functional and soccer skills than youth teammates. Former U-15 players active in soccer as young adults did not differ in maturity status from youth teammates but were chronologically older and performed better in agility and ball control. Young adult regional and national players in both age groups were rated significantly higher on the potential for success by their youth coaches, and national players were rated significantly higher than regional players. The results highlight the need for study of interactions among coaches, youth training and playing environments and the growth, maturity, functional, skill and behavioural characteristics of youth players, and how these interactions may influence persistence in soccer and later playing status. This study investigated the position-specific physical demands of professional Portuguese players. The effects of situational variables on the physical performance demands were also analysed (match location, match half and match result). Match performance observations were collected using Global Navigation Satellite System devices across 11 matches during a competitive season (2019-2020). Data were analysed according to five playing positions: goalkeepers ( n = 11), central defenders ( n = 42), wide defenders ( n = 31), central midfielders ( n = 34), open attackers ( n = 28), and centre forwards ( n = 14). Central midfield players completed the greatest total distance (10,787 ± 1536 m), while central defenders covered the least distance (9272 ± 455; p < 0.001). Open attackers covered the greatest high and very-high-speed distance (1504 ± 363 m), number of high-speed decelerations per match (11 ± 4) and were the fastest players (30.6 ± 1.5 km/h), along with center forwards (30.6 ± 2.0 km/h), versus all other positions ( p < 0.05). Greater distances were performed in teams that were winning (9978 ± 1963 m) or drawing (10,395 ± 875 m) versus losing (9415 ± 2050) p = 0.036 and p = 0.006, respectively. Increases in distance covered at walking speeds were observed during the 2nd half (1574 ± 179 m) compared with the 1st half (1483 ± 176; ( p < 0.003). A higher number of decelerations across all speeds were performed in the 1st half (144 ± 39) versus the 2nd half (135 ± 37). The distance covered in home matches (10,206 ± 1926 m) far exceeded away matches (9471 ± 1932 m; p < 0.001). The number of faster accelerations were higher in away (7 ± 5) versus home matches (6 ± 4; p < 0.049). The data demonstrate the different physical demands of each playing position and suggest that situational variables influence physical performance. These findings suggest position-specific physical training is required to condition players for the bespoke demands of each playing position.

This study aimed to identify socio-demographic correlates of leisure time physical activity among Portuguese adults. Subjects aged 31-60 years (1,076 males, 1,383 females) were categorized into two groups according to recommended physical activities ranging from ≥ 10 or < 10 MET.hours.week-1. Leisure time physical activity data was self-reported, including activities, duration of each session and frequency. Chi-square and logistic regression analyses were applied to the results. Among men, having a high socioeconomic status (OR = 1.89; 95%CI: 1.30-2.76; p = 0.001) was associated with attaining the recommended level of physical activity. For women, middle education levels were associated with physical activity (OR = 1.36; 95%CI: 1.01-1.85). Moreover, middle socioeconomic status (OR = 1.45; 95%CI: 0.80-1.91; p = 0.009) was also positively associated with meeting physical activities recommendations in the unadjusted analysis. Men and women had different patterns of socio-demographic correlates. An intervention designed to improve the levels of physical activity among Portuguese adults may take these correlates into account.
