Abstract

The article discusses a study on the prevalence of meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus pseudintermedius (MRSP) in cats and dogs in Portugal. The study involved pets presented at the teaching hospital of the Technical University Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in Lisbon from April 2008 to May 2010. Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) was used to genetically characterise the isolates. Results suggest the spread of MRSP among dogs in Europe.
