Abstract: In the last years Portugal has been at the forefront in the deployment of electricity from renewable energy sources (RES-E). The Portuguese national energy strategy 2020 (NES 2020) aims to reinforce Portugal’s leadership in sustainable energy and to attain the ambitious goals set in the government programme, namely consolidating the renewable energies cluster in Portugal, which will represent approximately by 2020 more than three times the 35,000 jobs estimated in 2010 and further developing the industrial cluster related with energy efficiency, creating 21,000 new jobs. The main purpose of this paper is to perform a prospective study and to discuss the various factors that influence the appraisal of sustainable systems integrating environmental, social and economic dimensions, mainly focusing on the RES-E jobs case by means of a multiobjective Input–Output model, based on current data availability. Recently, specific air quality problems have been detected in the northern region of Portugal. The nitrogen oxide (NO) annual limit value has been surpassed at several air quality monitoring stations in the northern region, and according to European legislation, air quality plans must be designed and implemented to reduce those levels. The analysis of the air quality data from the stations concerning NO exceedances indicates that traffic is responsible for an increase of more than 40 % compared with the urban background value. Specific measures to reduce NOx emissions have been selected and are related not only mainly to the traffic sector but also to the industrial and residential combustion sectors. The main objective of this study is to investigate the impact of the selected measures on the ambient levels of NO in northern Portugal using a numerical modelling tool-The Air Pollution Model (TAPM). TAPM was applied over the study region using a 120 × 120-km simulation domain and a spatial resolution of 4.8 × 4.8 km. The entire year of 2010 was simulated and was set as the base year to analyse the impact of the selected measures. Two scenarios have been defined and simulated: the base situation, which considers current NOx emissions, and the reduction scenario for which NOx emissions were re-estimated considering the implementation of the measures. The modelling results demonstrate a decrease of 4-5 μg m in the annual NO levels in the study region. Moreover, the implementation of the selected measures will allow compliance with the NO annual limit values in three of the five air quality stations that measured levels surpassing those established by legislation. Objective: This study aimed to survey the practice of palliative sedation in Portugal, where data on this subject were lacking. Methods: This was a prospective multicentric study that included all patients admitted to each team that agreed to participate. Patients were followed until death, discharge, or after 3 months of follow-up. Results: The study included 8 teams: 4 as palliative care units (PCU), 1 as a hospital palliative care team (HPCT), 2 as home care (HC), and 1 as HPCT and HC. Of the 361 patients enrolled, 52% were male, the median age was 76 years, and 285 (79%) had cancer. Continuous sedation was undergone by 49 (14%) patients: 26 (53%) were male, and the median age was 76. Most patients, 46 (94%), had an oncological diagnosis. Only in a minority of cases, the family, 16 (33%), or the patient, 5 (10%), participated in the decision to sedate. Delirium was the most frequent symptom leading to sedation. The medication most used was midazolam (65%). In the multivariable analysis, only age and the combined score were independently associated with sedation; patients <76 years and those with higher levels of suffering had a higher probability of being sedated. Conclusions: The practice of continuous palliative sedation in Portugal is within the range reported in other studies. One particularly relevant point was the low participation of patients and their families in the decision-making process. Although many body attitudes scales have been developed, none have been translated into Portuguese. This study aimed to translate the Ben-Tovim and Walker Body Attitudes Questionnaire and assess validity and reliability for a Brazilian sample. Women with (n = 39) and without (n = 57) eating disorders completed the scale, to assess discriminant validity. Convergent validity was assessed by the correlations between the scores and a measure of body dissatisfaction. The questionnaire was applied twice to controls after 1 mo. to evaluate reliability. Eating-disordered women had significantly higher mean scores on Feeling Fat, Disparagement, Salience and Lower Body Fatness, and lower scores on Attractiveness. No mean difference on Strength and Fitness was found. Most subscales were significantly correlated with the body-dissatisfaction measure. Test-retest coefficients ranged from .57 to .85. The translated version of the Body Attitudes Questionnaire seems to be a valid and reliable measure of body attitudes.

Responses of leaf growth and leaf water relations to seasonal drought were monitored during two successive years in three cultivars (Galhosa, Espargal and Mulata) of Ceratonia siliqua L. growing in the field in southern Portugal. Leaf water relations of fully expanded leaves were characterized by pressureâ volume analysis, and morphometric measurements of petiolar xylem were made. The three cultivars differed with respect to onset of leaf initiation. In Galhosa, there was a sharp peak of leaf initiation in June that was immediately followed by a period when leaf expansion rates were highest. The onset of leaf growth occurred earlier in Espargal and Mulata than in Galhosa, and both cultivars continued producing new leaves throughout the summer period. The diurnal pattern of water relations in recently expanded leaves indicated that, during midsummer, Galhosa was the only cultivar in which leaf water potential did not fall below the turgor loss point and leaf relative water content remained above 90%. The occurrence of osmotic adjustment in recently expanded leaves of Galhosa was not demonstrated conclusively. However, during the dry season following leaf formation, a seasonal decrease in osmotic potential sufficient to maintain turgor was detected in 1-year-old leaves of Galhosa but not in 1-year-old leaves of the other cultivars. Among cultivars, Galhosa petioles had the widest xylem conduits, which may partly explain why midday leaf water potential in Galhosa never decreased below -2.0 MPa even at the end of the summer drought.
