Objectives: We aimed to test the psychometric validity of the adapted and translated Self-Management Ability Questionnaire-Short Form (SMAQ-12) to Portuguese., Methods: The translation and adaptation of the SMAQ-12 followed international guidelines. We included 280 participants with chronic periodontitis from the Department of Periodontology of the Egas Moniz Dental Clinic. Participants completed the Portuguese version of the SMAQ-12 (SMAQ-12-PT), a 12-item scale with 3 conceptual domains (Role Management, Medical Management, and Emotional Management). The validity of the content, its construct and internal consistency, as well as test-retest reliability were used to estimate psychometric properties., Results: The SMAQ-12-PT showed an interclass correlation coefficient value of 0.90, with a 95% confidence interval (0.79-0.95; P < .001) and high reliability (Cronbach alpha coefficient ranging between 0.78 and 0.94). Confirmatory factor analysis revealed adequate model fit, with comparative fit index of 0.853, goodness-of-fit of 0.947, and a 0.052 value of root mean squared error of approximation., Conclusions: The SMAQ-12-PT was found to be a valid and reliable instrument in the Portuguese population. Oral health surveys are essential for assessing the dental caries experience and to influence national policies. This retrospective cross-sectional study aims to analyze dental caries experience for which dental treatment was sought in a reference university dental hospital at the Lisbon Metropolitan Area between January 2016 and March 2020. Full-mouth examination, and sociodemographic, behavior, and medical information were included. Descriptive analyses and logistic regression analysis were applied to ascertain risk indicators associated with dental caries experience. A final sample of 9349 participants (5592 females/3757 males) were included, aged 18 to 99 years old. In this population, caries experience was 91.1%, higher in female participants. Age (OR = 1.01, 95% CI [1.00-1.02], occupation (OR = 2.94, 95% CI [2.37-3.65], OR = 3.35, 95% CI [2.40-4.67], OR = 2.55, 95% CI [1.66-3.91], for employed, unemployed, and retired, respectively), overweight (OR = 1.52, 95% CI [1.18-1.96]), reporting to have never visited a dentist (OR = 0.38, 95% CI [0.23-0.64], and self-reported week teeth status (OR = 2.14, 95% CI [1.40-3.28]) were identified as risk indicators for the presence of dental caries, according to adjusted multivariable logistic analyses. These results highlight a substantial rate of dental experience in a Portuguese cohort and will pave the way for future tailored oral public health programs in Portugal.

We aimed to estimate the geographical distribution of periodontitis prevalence and risk based on sociodemographic and economic data. This study used sociodemographic, economic, and health services data obtained from a regional survey and governmental open data sources. Information was gathered for all 308 Portuguese municipalities and compiled in a large set of 52 variables. We employed principal component analysis (PCA), factor analysis (FA) and clustering techniques to model the Portuguese nationwide geographical distribution of the disease. Estimation of periodontitis risk for each municipality was achieved by calculation of a normalized score, obtained as an adjusted linear combination of six independent factors that were extracted through PCA/FA. The municipalities were also classified according to a quartile-based risk grade in each cluster. Additionally, linear regression was used to estimate the periodontitis prevalence within the peri-urban municipality clusters, accounting for 30.5% of the Portuguese population. A total of nine municipality clusters were obtained with the following characteristics: mainly rural/low populated, including small villages (one), partly rural, including small cities (two), mainly urban/peri-urban, including medium-sized to large cities (4), and urban/large cities (2). Within the clusters, a higher periodontitis risk was identified for municipalities with lower income, older populations. The estimated periodontitis prevalence for the 18 municipalities included in the four peri-urban clusters ranged from 41.2% to 69.0%. Periodontitis prevalence estimates range from 41.2% to 69.0% for the municipalities characterized as peri-urban and mainly urban, most of them located in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area, the tenth largest in Europe.

The aim of this study was to cross-culturally adapt and validate the psychosocial impact of dental esthetics questionnaire (PIDAQ) to the Portuguese language. The PIDAQ was culturally translated and adapted according to international guidelines. In this cross-sectional study, we enrolled 501 subjects in a population-based epidemiological survey conducted at the Egas Moniz Dental Clinic (Almada, Portugal) in June 2022. The participants answered the Portuguese version of the PIDAQ (PIDAQ-PT), which was a 23-item scale with four conceptual domains (self-confidence, social impact, psychological impact and esthetic concern factor). Psychometric properties were estimated using content validity, construct validity, internal consistency and test−retest reliability. The PIDAQ-PT presented an intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) of 0.84, and a 95% confidence interval (0.73−0.90, p < 0.001), with values for the Cronbach’s alpha coefficient of the subconstructs ranging from 0.93 to 0.98. In the confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), the final models presented a good fit, with the comparative fit indices (CFIs) ranging from 0.905 to 0.921 and the root mean squared error of approximation (RMSEA) ranging between 0.088 and 0.090. The PIDAQ-PT was shown to be a valid and reliable tool to assess oral health values in a Portuguese population. Further studies should evaluate the psychometric properties of the oral personal representation on dental specialties and its impact on dental appointments and procedures.

Aim: Molar incisor hypomineralization (MIH) is a prevalent oral health condition whose knowledge by dentists is key to the best clinical outcome. This study aimed to evaluate the knowledge, perceptions and clinical experiences of MIH among Portuguese dentists., Methods: A cross-sectional structured questionnaire was distributed nationally through a web-based survey platform. Data concerning demographic variables, years of experience, dental specialty, MIH prevalence, diagnosis, severity, training demands and clinical management of MIH were collected. We calculated a knowledge score (KS), and compared data between Pediatric Dentists (PDs), General Dental Practitioners (GDPs) and other dental specialties (ODS)., Results: Overall, 2.2% of Portuguese dentists (n = 257) answered the questionnaire. Most participants reported having identified MIH in their practice (82.5%), with PD reporting the prevalence appeared to have increased, and practically all (91.7%) considered it a public health problem. Resin composite was often the used material to restore MIH teeth (56.0%), however PDs indicated glass ionomer cements as the preferred and preformed crowns a better option. The average KS on MIH was 41.3 (± 5.7), with GDPs having a similar score than PDs. Most respondents (94.9%) reported a lack of information about MIH and were willing to receive appropriate clinical training., Conclusions: The average knowledge on MIH was considered low among Portuguese dentists. Respondents perceived an increased incidence of MIH, despite the lack of prevalence data in Portugal. The material of choice was Glass Ionomer and performed crowns, by PDs, while GDPs and ODS reported poor confidence to manage MIH. Background and objectives: People with Parkinson's disease (PD) may be at risk of having bad periodontal status. A consistent periodontal examination is critical to investigate how it impacts on PD quality of life. We aimed to assess the periodontal status of people with PD, and its association with quality of life and self-perceived xerostomia. Materials and Methods: To this end, from February to March 2020, we consecutively enrolled 28 PD individuals, and motor and non-motor symptoms of PD were assessed using the Movement Disorder Society Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (MDS-UPDRS). We performed full-mouth periodontal examination and gathered information on self-perceived quality of life in PD, oral health impact profile (OHIP-14) and xerostomia. Results: The prevalence of periodontitis was 75.0% and most cases were identified as severe (46.4%). Upper extremity rigidity, hand posture and kinetic tremors were significantly correlated with worse periodontal status. PDQ-8 showed to be correlated with self-perceived oral health-related quality of life and xerostomia levels. Conclusions: This group of people with PD had a high prevalence of periodontitis. Deteriorated levels of the upper extremities in advanced stages of PD were associated with worse periodontal status and hygiene habits. Quality of life in PD appears to be associated with self-perceived OHRQoL and xerostomia.

One Gram-stain-positive, non-motile, non-spore-forming, catalase-negative, and coccobacilli-shaped strain, designated c10Ua161M T , was isolated from a urine sample from a reproductive-age healthy woman. Comparative 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis indicated that strain c10Ua161M T belonged to the genus Lactobacillus . Phylogenetic analysis based on pheS and rpoA gene sequences strongly supported a clade encompassing strains c10Ua161M T and eight other strains from public databases, distinct from currently recognized species of the genus Lactobacillus. In silico Average Nucleotide Identity (ANI) and Genome-to-Genome Distance Calculator (GGDC), showed 87.9 and 34.3 % identity to the closest relative Lactobacillus jensenii , respectively. The major fatty acids of strain c10Ua161M T were C 18 : 1 ω 9c (65.0%), C 16 : 0 (17.8%), and summed feature 8 (10.2 %; comprising C 18 : 1 ω7 c , and/or C 18 : 1 ω6 c ). The DNA G+C content of the strains is 34.2 mol%. On the basis of data presented here, strain c10Ua161M T represents a novel species of the genus Lactobacillus , for which the name Lactobacillus mulieris sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is c10Ua161M T (=CECT 9755 T =DSM 108704 T ).

This study aimed to describe the prevalence and extent of periodontal diseases among adults in the southern region of the Lisbon Metropolitan Area. This population-based cross-sectional study included 1,064 randomized participants (aged 18 to 95 years, 617 females/447 males). Sociodemographic, behaviours and medical information were recorded. Periodontal conditions were assessed with a full-mouth circumferential periodontal examination. It was used the American Association of Periodontology/European Federation of Periodontology 2017 case definitions. A logistic regression analysis was applied to ascertain hypothetical risk factors towards periodontitis. The prevalence of periodontitis was 59.9%, with 24.0% and 22.2% of the participants exhibiting severe and moderate periodontitis, respectively. The risk of periodontitis significantly increased with age (OR = 1.05, 95% CI: 1.04-1.06), for active and former smokers (OR = 3.76 and OR = 2.11, respectively), with lower education levels (OR = 2.08, OR = 1.86, for middle and elementary education, respectively) and with diabetes mellitus (OR = 1.53). This study confirms a high burden of periodontitis in the target (Portuguese) sub-population. The findings provide a comprehensive understanding that will empower appropriate national public oral health programmes and population-based preventive actions.

Objectives: Information on clonal lineages and genetic platforms involved in the mobilization of carbapenemases between Pseudomonas aeruginosa strains in Portugal is scarce. Here, we outline the genetic drivers contributing to the occurrence of blaVIM-2-producing P. aeruginosa over two decades., Methods: A collection of carbapenem-resistant P. aeruginosa clinical isolates (n = 263, 1995-2014) was screened for carbapenemase production by Blue-Carba and PCR. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing was performed according to EUCAST and clonal analysis by MLST. Nine isolates representing different integrons and STs were selected for WGS, followed by bioinformatics., Results: Twenty-seven blaVIM-2-producing P. aeruginosa belonging to 10 STs were identified, with ST179 and ST111 being the most prevalent and persistent clones. blaVIM-2 was associated with seven class I integrons frequently co-harbouring aminoglycoside resistance genes. In58 was commonly identified, followed by derivatives and In100. blaVIM-2-harbouring transposons of the Tn3 and Tn402 families were linked to different plasmids or integrative conjugative elements of the clc family., Conclusions: The dissemination of blaVIM-2 carrying integrons is associated with a complex interplay between different mobile genetic elements, including the overlooked integrative conjugative elements, and successful spread of particular clones.
