A set of springs were sampled along São Miguel Island (Azores, Portugal) to proceed to the characterization of the major-ion and radon (222Rn) content. According to the selection criteria a total of 42 discharges were sampled, both during winter and summer periods, along major geological units, namely 3 springs at Sete Cidades Volcano, 4 at Nordeste Volcano, 17 at Fogo Volcano, and 18 at Furnas Volcano. Spring water temperature ranges from 12.8 to 78.1 °C in winter (mean = 23.6 °C), and from 12.6 to 76.7 °C in summer (mean = 23.9 °C), and the dataset comprehends 26 (winter) to 21 (summer) cold springs, 3 to 8 ortothermal springs, as well as 13 thermal discharges. Mean electrical conductivity is equal to 552.9 μS/cm (winter) and 550 μS/cm (summer), suggesting a short residence time, and waters are acidic to slightly basic in character (pHwinter: 4.16–7.16; pHsummer: 4.05–7.35). Groundwater chemistry is manly controlled by silicate leaching, enhanced by the water temperature, seawater spraying and by the active volcanic environment. 222Rn content ranges between 0.99 and 551.64 Bq/L (mean = 47.8 Bq/L) in winter and between 1.42 and 559.67 Bq/L (mean = 49.4 Bq/L) in summer. All the springs with anomalously higher values are located in Fogo Volcano, while the lowest radon concentrations are observed at Furnas Volcano. Groundwater temperature exerts a control over the 222Rn concentration; thus, the lower content corresponds to the most mineralized thermal waters. Springs with the higher radon content show the radiogenic contribution from uranium-rich peralkaline syenite intrusive body. Furthermore, data reveal that besides this lithologic control some waters are influenced by 222Rn migration from a deeper source towards shallower aquifers, carried by a volatile flux of CO2. The precise location of the seismic source of 1755 CE Great Lisbon earthquake is still uncertain. The aim of this work is to use an onland sedimentary record in southern Portugal to test and validate seismic sources for the earthquake. To achieve this, tsunami deposit thicknesses from over 150 cores collected at Salgados in southern Portugal were compared to the results of a tsunami sediment transport model (Delft3D‐FLOW) that simulates tsunami propagation, inundation, erosion, and deposition. Five different hypothetical seismic sources were modeled with varying bed roughness coefficients to assess how well they reproduced observed patterns of tsunami deposit thicknesses and dune. Modeled and observed historical tsunami arrival times were also used to test different earthquake sources. Based on these comparisons, three modeled earthquake sources were able to reproduce the observed data, suggesting they should be regarded as somewhat more likely sources for the 1755 earthquake in contrast to four other modeled sources. The fault closest to shore (Marquês de Pombal) yielded the best correlations between model and observations. Groundwater quality in the Azores archipelago (Portugal) is a major issue for the definition of water policies, as about 98 % of the water supply is supported by aquifers. Therefore, this issue was addressed in the Azores River Basin District Plan made in order to comply with EU Water Framework Directive (WFD), using an approach developed in order to link land use pattern and groundwater chemistry. Monitored groundwater corresponds to cold waters with a pH range between 5.95 and 8.44. A median value of conductivity (188.8 μS/cm) suggests that in general the samples are low mineralized, and are mainly in the range from Na-HCO to Na-Cl type waters. Average content of nitrate ranges between 0.02 and 66.2 mg NO/L, and an evaluation of chemical status of groundwater with respect to NO content was made in groundwater bodies in which it was possible to compute arithmetic mean values and the respective confidence limit at 95 %. From the 21 groundwater bodies in which this computation was made possible, only in São Jorge Island a single value exceeds the maximum admissible limit of 45 mg NO/L. Therefore, only in this case a groundwater body is in poor chemical status due to non-point pollution sources. Results are consistent with the set of constructed potential pollution risk maps, except in São Jorge where the area occupied by moderate to very-high-risk areas is higher comparing to other islands. Risk maps were constructed using vulnerability to pollution determined according to the DRASTIC methods, and overlying this index value with land use and net N-pollution load layers. Climate change projections for spatial-temporal distributions of temperatures in Portugal are analysed using a 13-member ensemble of regional climate model simulations ( A1B scenario for 2041-2070). Bias corrections are carried out using an observational gridded dataset (E- OBS) and equally-weighted ensemble statistics are discussed. Clear shifts toward higher future seasonal mean temperatures, in central tendency and also in both tails of the distributions, are found (2-4 °C), particularly for summer and autumn maximum temperatures. Furthermore, frequencies of occurrence of daily extremes are projected to increase, particularly in summer maximum temperatures over inland Portugal. This study describes sedimentation associated with the tsunami generated by the Lisbon earthquake of ad 1755. It is argued here that the tsunami deposited a sand sheet across the Lagoa dos Salgados (central Algarve, Portugal), that is intercalated with late-Holocene estuarine/lagoonal sediments. A wide range of proxies (sedimentological, exoscopic and palaeontological) are used to establish the provenance of the sandy material as well as to constrain the age of the deposit. Stratigraphic criteria are used to distinguish the uniqueness of the event layer. Exoscopic and textural analysis suggest that the source of the event deposit is mainly the dune, beach and underlying layer. Micropalaentological analysis (Foraminifera) indicates a conspicuous increase in diversity and dominance of marine species within the event sediment sheet. The spatial characteristics of the tsunami layer suggests that the barrier prevented widespread overtopping by the incoming tsunami allowing inference of c. 10 m as maximum height at the coast; they also indicate the inlet as the preferential route for both water and sediment transported inland. Dating results (14C, 210Pb and 137Cs) allow extrapolation of an age of deposition compatible with the ad 1755 Lisbon earthquake and tsunami, the most devastating event that affected this coastal area in historical times. Correlations with similar deposits detected in nearby lowlands strengthen the argument that the tsunami sediment layer represents a marker horizon in the coastal stratigraphy along the Portuguese Algarve coast. The stratigraphic uniqueness of this event might have implications in the establishment of millennial scale recurrence intervals for this type of high-energy marine inundation. Abstract: Identification of past tsunamis is important for risk assessment and management of coastal areas. Obtaining accurate and precise ages of sediments originating from such extreme marine coastal floods is crucial for a reliable estimation of the recurrence interval of these often devastating events. We present here the results of quartz optical dating and 14C dating of two sites (Boca do Rio and Martinhal) on the Algarve coast (southern Portugal). These sites contain deposits of the great tsunami of November 1, 1755. The sections were described using sedimentological techniques; at both sites tsunami-laid sands and gravels were identified, intercalated between estuarine muds. Quartz luminescence ages from these sedimentary successions were derived using standard SAR-OSL dating using multi-grain sub-samples. A multiple sampling strategy was employed with several samples taken from the AD 1755 tsunami deposit and from the sediments bracketing the tsunami layer. Our SAR-OSL protocol was shown to be appropriate using dose recovery measurements (measured/given dose ratio of 1.004±0.007, n =165). The several OSL ages from the 1755 tsunamigenic deposits are internally reproducible but yield age overestimates of between 20 and 125% (60–310 years respectively); this is in agreement with values reported in the literature for similar deposits. The age overestimation of the tsunami-laid sands is presumably due to the rapid erosion and deposition of older sediments, with insufficient light exposure for complete bleaching during the tsunami event itself. The absence of significant bleaching during the tsunami is also suggested by the shape of the dose distributions based on sub-samples made up of only about 100 grains. Analysis of the distributions with the minimum-age model seems to yield the expected age for two of the three distributions. It is important to note that age offsets of a few tens of years to a few hundred years rapidly become insignificant when dating older (>1 to few ka) tsunami layers. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The article presents a study that shows the function of large-scale eddies in the happening of winter precipitation deficits in Portugal. The severest winter precipitation shortages in Portugal due from an improvement in the stationary wave pattern of the atmospheric big-scale circulation over the Northern Hemisphere. The enhancement results to a strong warm-core elevation westward of Iberia, with almost equivalent baroteopihc structure.

Abstract: Because of its exposed northern mid-Atlantic location, morphology and plate-tectonics setting, the Azores Archipelago is highly vulnerable to tsunami hazards associated with landslides and seismic or volcanic triggers, local or distal. Critical examination of available data – written accounts and geologic evidence – indicates that, since the settlement of the archipelago in the 15th century, at least 23 tsunami have struck Azorean coastal zones. Most of the recorded tsunami are generated by earthquakes. The highest known run-up (11–15 m) was recorded on 1 November 1755 at Terceira Island, corresponding to an event of intensity VII–VIII (damaging–heavily damaging) on the Papadopolous–Imamura scale. To date, eruptive activity, while relatively frequent in the Azores, does not appear to have generated destructive tsunami. However, this apparent paucity of volcanogenic tsunami in the historical record may be misleading because of limited instrumental and documentary data, and small source-volumes released during historical eruptions. The latter are in contrast with the geological record of massive pyroclastic flows and caldera explosions with potential to generate high-magnitude tsunami, predating settlement. In addition, limited evidence suggests that submarine landslides from unstable volcano flanks may have also triggered some damaging tsunamigenic floods that perhaps were erroneously attributed to intense storms. The lack of destructive tsunami since the mid-18th century has led to governmental complacency and public disinterest in the Azores, as demonstrated by the fact that existing emergency regulations concerning seismic events in the Azores Autonomous Region make no mention of tsunami and their attendant hazards. We suspect that the coastal fringe of the Azores may well preserve a sedimentary record of some past tsunamigenic flooding events. Geological field studies must be accelerated to expand the existing database to include prehistoric events-information essential for more precisely estimating the average tsunami recurrence rate for the Azores over a longer period. A present-day occurrence of a moderate to intense tsunami (i.e., the size of the 1755 event) would produce societal disruption and economic loss orders of magnitudes greater than those of previous events in Azorean history. To reduce risk from future tsunami, comprehensive assessment of tsunami hazards and the preparation of hazards-zonation maps are needed to guide governmental decisions on issues of prudent land-use planning, public education and emergency management. Tsunamis are highly energetic events that may destructively impact the coast. Resolving the degree of coastal resilience to tsunamis is extremely difficult and sometimes impossible. In part, our understanding is constrained by the limited number of contemporaneous examples and by the high dynamism of coastal systems. In fact, long-term changes of coastal systems can mask the evidence of past tsunamis, leaving us a short or incomplete sedimentary archive. Here, we present a multidisciplinary approach involving sedimentological, geomorphological and geophysical analyses and numerical modelling of the AD 1755 tsunami flood on a coastal segment located within the southern coast of Portugal. In particular, the work focuses on deciphering the impact of the tsunami waves over a coastal sand barrier enclosing two lowlands largely inundated by the tsunami flood. Erosional features documented by geophysical data were assigned to the AD 1755 event with support of sedimentological and age estimation results. Furthermore, these features allowed the calibration of the simulation settings to reconstruct the local conditions and establish the run-up range of the AD 1755 tsunami when it hit this coast (6–8 m above mean sea level). Abstract: In the coast of Central Portugal three lagoons were created by the Holocene flooding of diapiric-related depressions but experienced afterwards a significant sediment accumulation. Fast environmental and morphological changes after the Middle Holocene were clearly forced by anthropogenic activities since the Middle Ages and show a strong feedback on the human communities. Erosion in the studied watersheds depends on climatic and anthropic changes; especially, demographic rises increase agriculture and deforestation in the watersheds, and sedimentation in the lagoons. The region was successively occupied by ethnic groups since the Neolithic (including Romans, Sueves, Visigoths and Muslims), but the main changes were largely due to anthropic forcing following the Christian Reconquest by the Kingdom of Portugal. In fact, during the Middle Ages and Renaissance the area had intense nautical, fishing and agricultural activities, even if reduced during the 14th century crisis. Later, due to severe sediment accumulation and shoaling, sailing was drastically reduced and most of the area drowned in the maximum transgression was claimed to farming. It is also noteworthy that the social evolution and sediment entrainment in the watersheds appear to be in tune with climatic trends deduced after regional and global data. In synthesis, we conclude that the human activities during the last millennium greatly accelerated the natural silting trend of the lagoons. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Following previous studies on beach and dune sediments from the Espinho–Mondego Cape coastal sector, geochemical studies have been done on the same sediments aiming to unravel the lithological from the anthropogenic geochemical signal. 129 samples have been collected from 45 profiles, in beach and dune sediments. Total Fe, Cu, Pb, Zn, Mn, Cd, Co, Ni, Cr, Ca, Mg and Al concentrations were measured in the fine fractions of the sediments. The absence of relationship between the analysed heavy elements and Al and the exhibition of contents higher than the rocks outcropping in the hinterland, point to an additional source of heavy metals related to human activities. The available data allowed us to consider that inputs from Aveiro lagoon (natural and anthropogenic), Douro River and coastal erosion (by littoral drift or advective currents) are the main sources of heavy metals in this region. Background: A new element for job stress called Illegitimate Tasks has been investigated in recent years, along with stress as an offense to self-theory. Illegitimate tasks are those that are either needless or unrelated to the employee's role and can be categorized as unreasonable tasks and unnecessary tasks., Methods: This study aimed to adapt the Bern Illegitimate Tasks Scale to Portuguese and provide evidence of its validity, through a confirmatory factor analysis with a sample of 472 workers from different sectors., Results: The internal consistency, of the whole scale, measured by Cronbach's alpha, was 0.923 and 0.902 and 0.928 for the unnecessary tasks and, for unreasonable tasks subscales respectively. The confirmatory analysis supported a two-factor model and showed good to very good indexes of fit (CFI = 0.985; TLI = 0.997; SRMR = 0.035; RMSEA = 0.171)., Discussion: The Portuguese version of the Bern Illegitimate Tasks Scale presents very good psychometric properties for the intended measurement goals and can now be used in research with Portuguese speaking samples., (© 2023. Ctenophores are fragile gelatinous organisms whose diversity and distribution are relatively unknown. For the first time, the occurrence of four planktonic species, namelyOcyropsis crystallina,Eurhamphaea vexilligera, Cestum veneris,andBeroe sp., was reported from Madeira archipelago waters (NE subtropical Atlantic). This report represents the northernmost records in the Eastern Atlantic Ocean for O. crystallinaand E. vexilligera.

Sete Cidades Lake (São Miguel Island, Portugal) is subdivided into two interconnected branches: the Green Lake and Blue Lake. The lake has an area and maximum depth of 4.39 km 2 and 29.5 m (Blue Lake), respectively, with evidence of eutrophication, particularly in the northern area of the Green Lake. In this study, we conducted a sampling survey during January 2017 to measure CO 2 fluxes from the lake using a floating accumulation chamber. We also produced two hydrogeochemical profiles for each of the lake's branches. A total of 1760 CO 2 flux measurements were taken along the lake's surface. The lake water was relatively cold (14.0 °C on average) and weakly mineralised (average electrical conductivity of 116 μS cm -1 ) with a neutral pH (7.7 on average). The relative composition of major ions occurred in the following decreasing order: Na +  > Mg 2+  > Ca 2+  > K + for cations and Cl -  > HCO 3 -  > SO 4 2- for anions. The lake water was mainly the Na-Cl type due to sea salt input from seawater spraying. CO 2 fluxes ranged from 0.3 to 17.2 g m -2 d -1 and from 2.1 to 17.9 g m -2 d -1 for the Blue and Green Lakes, respectively. Highest CO 2 C isotopic data. The estimated total CO 2 was predominantly biogenically sourced, which was further supported by the δ 13 C isotopic data. The estimated total CO 2 emissions varied between 5.8 t d -1 (Green Lake; area = 0.81 km 2 ) and 24.9 t d -1 (Blue Lake; area = 3.58 km 2 ). This study further elucidates the lake's trophic and chemical pollution status and has major implications for lacustrine CO 2 emissions to the atmosphere. Introduction: Multiple sclerosis is a chronic inflammatory disease, in which a diagnostic delay could reduce the available therapeutic options. Therefore, it is important to monitor the time to diagnosis and understand factors that may potentially reduce it. The objective of this study was to determine the time between the first symptoms and the diagnosis of multiple sclerosis and which factors may contribute to a diagnostic delay., Material and Methods: Cross-sectional multicenter study, with retrospective data analysis, conducted in five tertiary Portuguese hospitals. Patients were consecutively selected from each local multiple sclerosis patients´ database. Sociodemographic and initial clinical data were collected through a questionnaire. Date of final diagnosis and multiple sclerosis classification was obtained from clinical files., Results: A total of 285 patients were included with mean age at diagnosis of 36 years. The median time between first clinical manifestation and multiple sclerosis diagnosis was nine months (IQR 2 - 38). Diagnostic delay was associated with an older age (p < 0.001; r = 0.35), motor deficit at onset [26.5 months (IQR 4.5 - 56.5); p = 0.0005], higher number of relapses before diagnosis (p < 0.001; r = 0,626), first observation by other medical specialty [11 months (IQR 2 - 48); p < 0.001], prior alternative diagnosis [20 months (IQR 4 - 67.5); p < 0.001] and primary progressive subtype [37 months (IQR 25 - 64.5); p < 0.001]. The most significant delay occurred between the initial symptom and neurological observation., Discussion: A significant delay occurred between initial symptoms and the diagnosis of multiple sclerosis, reflecting the need toincrease awareness of this entity and its diverse symptom presentation.

Lyme disease is an endemic zoonosis, the most prevalent tick-transmitted infection in temperate areas of Europe, North America and Asia. It is a multisystemic disease with cutaneous, musculoskeletal, neurologic and cardiac manifestations, according to the stage of the disease. We describe a case of late neuroborreliosis in an Erasmus programme student living in Porto. We discuss the importance of the epidemiological suspicion, the clinical approach, the diagnostic criteria and the most adequate treatment.

Diffuse alveolar hemorrhage (DAH) is a rare but potentially catastrophic manifestation with a high mortality. Among rheumatologic diseases, it occurs most frequently in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and systemic vasculitis. Despite new diagnostic tools and therapies, it remains a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge. The aim of this work was to characterize the SLE patients with an episode of alveolar hemorrhage followed in our Clinical Immunology Unit (CIU). A retrospective chart review was carried out for all patients with SLE followed in CIU between 1984 and the end of 2013. We reviewed the following data: demographic characteristics, clinical and laboratory data, radiologic investigations, histologic studies, treatment, and outcome. We identified 10 episodes of DAH, corresponding to seven patients, all female. These represent 1.6% of SLE patients followed in our Unit. The age at DAH attack was 42.75 ± 18.9 years. The average time between diagnosis of SLE and the onset of DAH was 7.1 years. Three patients had the diagnosis of SLE and the DAH attack at the same time. Disease activity according to SLEDAI was high, ranging from 15 to 41. All patients were treated with methylprednisolone, 37.5% cyclophosphamide and 28.6% plasmapheresis. Introduction: Deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the subthalamic nucleus (STN) in Parkinson's disease (PD) is safe and effective. Most series report stable long-term motor responses., Aim: To report the long-term outcome of STN-DBS in advanced stage PD patients at a Portuguese center., Patients and Methods: Motor status was evaluated before surgery ('off' medication and best 'on'), post-operatively, and at five years ('on' medication and stimulation) using UPDRS part III. Axial symptoms subscores were quantified. Disability was assessed with the modified Rankin Scale (mRS). Development of dementia was assessed at 6 months and five years post-DBS., Results: Of the 183 patients submitted to STN-DBS, 71 had completed 5 years of follow-up. Ten patients were not included: two died (cancer, myocardial infarction), five were lost to follow-up and three had their stimulation systems removed. Motor function improved by 78% and 66% postoperatively and at five years, respectively. There was improvement of axial symptoms postoperatively, with significant worsening at five years (p<0.001). mRS scores improved postoperatively, but declined at five years, although most patients (88.5%) remained ambulatory (mRS<4). One patient (1.6%) and 19 patients (31,2%) were demented at 6 months and 5 years, respectively. Patients who developed dementia were significantly older than non-demented patients (56.5±7.8 vs 63.7±5.9 years-old; p<0.001)., Conclusions: In this series STN-DBS proved its efficacy regarding motor symptom improvement even five years after the procedure. Deterioration of axial symptoms and disability, as well as new onset dementia were observed in this period, but the possible role of STN-DBS as a causative factor is yet to be defined.

This study aimed to investigate the relationship between minor and medically attended injuries and to analyse the influence of child-related factors and family-related factors in injuries of preschool children. Individual interviews were conducted with 335 parents of 1- to 5-year-old children. Parents informed about the child and the family variables and reported the child's history of injuries in the last year. The frequencies of minor injuries and medically attended injuries were not correlated. The risk factors for both kinds of injuries include the number of siblings and the size of the family. Minor injuries were more frequent in older than in younger children. Medically attended injuries were more frequent in boys than in girls. The risk factors that influence minor and medically attended injuries are different, suggesting that the strategies to prevent and reduce injuries need to take that difference into consideration.

The purpose of this epidemiological study was to determine the differences in the prevalence of caries between individuals with Down syndrome (DS) and their siblings. A sibling-matched, population-based and cross-sectional survey was performed. This study involved 138 (62%) children with DS and 86 (38%) siblings, aged 2-26. The children were compared in different subgroups: [2, 6], [6, 12], and [13, 26]. Data was gathered through the use of a complete questionnaire and clinical observation. Data analysis was performed by using SPSS® v.18.0 software with any p value <.05 considered as significant. The DS group presented a significantly higher percentage of children within the caries-free group: 72% versus 46% of the siblings group (p < .001). In the age gap [2, 6[the median value of DMFT was the same in both groups (p = .918). In the age gap [6, 12] the median value of DMFT in the DS group was 0 and in the siblings group was 1 (p = .004). In the age gap [13, 26] the median value of DMFT in the DS group was 0, whereas in the siblings group the median value was 3, which constitutes a significantly high difference (p = .003). Quality of Life is one of the leading evaluations in the diagnosis, therapy and investigation of patients with asthma. The aim of this study was to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Portuguese version of the Asthma Quality of Life Questionnaire (AQLQ-M) designed by Marks in Australia. This questionnaire consists of 20 items describing the impact of asthma on patient's lifestyle and covers 4 dimensions (breathlessness, mood, social limitation and worrying). After a process of translation, backtranslation, and pretest, the Portuguese version of AQLQ-M was administered to 82 adults asthmatics living in 3 different urban areas. The following data were also recorded: age, sex, main symptoms, duration of disease, hospital visits, severity of disease, and medication. All patients performed spirometry. The reliability study (internal consistency with Cronbach's alpha coefficient and inter-item correlation analysis) gave satisfactory results (range of r= 0.58 to 0.94; a= 0.91 to 0.97). Results for construct validity shown that the breathlessness dimension presented the largest numbers of significant correlations with the most important clinical variables of asthma. In conclusion, this study has shown that the Portuguese version of the AQLQ-M has good psychometric properties, and is suitable for use on individual patients with asthma in our country.
