Common valerian is a medicinal plant. The underground organs of this species are used as a mild sedative and sleeping aid. Poland is one of the largest producers of this raw material in Europe, with local cultivar 'Lubelski' as a primary cultivated form. Although valerian is the subject of more or less deliberate selection carried out by farmers, it is still genetically unstable. The aim of this study was to determine the diversity of the 'Lubelski' cultivar originating from four regions of Poland (forms: L1–L4) in relation to wild-growing populations of the species. The plants were assessed in terms of the mass of underground organs and the content of valerenic acids and essential oils (EOs). The content of valerenic acids was determined using HPLC, whereas the content of EOs was determined using hydrodistillation. The composition of EOs was assessed using GC-MS GC-FID. The ploidy level of the analyzed objects was determined as well. Wild-growing populations (diploids) were characterized by lower masses of underground organs and lower contents of valerenic acid than cultivated forms (tetraploids). However, they produced higher contents of EOs. All the cultivated forms were strongly diversified with respect to the analyzed traits, including the mass of the roots (CV 49–75%), the content of valerenic acids (CV 18–55%), and the content of EOs (CV 28–57%). A total of 44 compounds were identified in the EOs. The dominant compound of both wild-growing populations and the 'Lubelski' forms were: α-fenchene, bornyl acetate, and valerenal. Among 'Lubelski' forms, the most interesting seems to be the L2 form, which was characterized by a relatively high yield and high content of valerenic acids and EOs. Background: Sepsis in low-birth-weight neonates remains one of the most significant causes of neonatal morbidity and mortality. Approximately 3 million newborns suffer from sepsis globally every year. The aim of this study was to compare demographic and clinical features, as well as etiology and antibiotic susceptibility, of the main pathogens related to neonatal sepsis in two neonatal intensive units during a two-year period. Methods: We observed early-onset (EO-BSI) and late-onset bloodstream infections (LO-BSI) cases in two high-reference neonatal intensive care units (NICU) over a 24-month period (2016–2017). Samples of patients' blood were tested for the presence of the microorganisms. All bacterial isolates were tested for susceptibility to antibiotics. Results: The majority of sepsis cases weighed above 1000 g and were born by cesarean section. About 10% of the EO-BSI group died. There were differences in the EO-BSI /LO-BSI ratio in the compared wards due to differences among the admitted children. The most common pathogens isolated from blood were coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) were represented by two dominating species: S. epidermidis and S. haemolyticus, followed by Klebsiella spp. strains and E.coli, which were mostly found in EO-BSI cases. No single S. agalactiae (GBS) strain was isolated. The majority of CoNS strains were resistant to methicillin, half were resistant to aminoglycosides, and one-third were resistant to macrolides and lincosamides. Half of the Gram-negative rods were resistant to beta-lactams. Conclusions: The epidemiology of sepsis in two observed NICUs is comparable to data obtained from other studies with a predominance of methicillin-resistant CoNS in LO-BSI and beta-lactam resistant E. coli in EO-BSI. It is of importance that the campaign for controlling GBS carriage in pregnant women in Poland resulted in the disappearance of GBS as a cause of sepsis. The purpose of the work was to determine the intraspecific variability of the stinging nettle, in respect of the mass of leaves and their chemical composition, including the content of phenolic compounds and assimilative pigments. The objects of the study were 10 populations of nettle, originating from the eastern and southern part of Poland. The results obtained indicate a high level of variability between and within the populations investigated but not strictly related to their geographical locations. The mass of the leaves ranged from 0.19 to 0.28 kg dry weight (DW)/plant (Coefficient of variation (CV) = 16.33%). Using HPLC–DAD, four phenolic acids were detected, i.e., caffeoylmalic (570.97–1367.40 mg/100 g DW), chlorogenic (352.79–1070.83 mg/100 g DW), neochlorogenic (114.56–284.77 mg/100 g DW) and cichoric (58.31–189.52 mg/100 g DW) acids, with the last one differentiating populations to the highest degree (CV = 48.83%). All of the analyzed populations met the requirements of the European Pharmacopoeia (Ph Eur 10th) concerning the minimum content of caffeoylmalic and chlorogenic acids in nettle leaves (not less than 0.3%). Within the flavonoid fraction, two compounds were identified, namely rutoside (917.05–1937.43 mg/100 g DW, CV = 21.32%) and hyperoside (42.01–289.45 mg/100 g DW; CV = 55.26%). The level of chlorophyll a ranged from 3.82 to 4.49 mg/g DW, chlorophyll b from 1.59 to 2.19 mg/g DW, while the content of carotenoids varied from 2.34 to 2.60 mg/100 g DW. Given all the traits investigated, the level of a population's polymorphism (CV) was visibly higher within a population than between populations. Population no. 4 was distinguished by the highest mass of leaves, and the highest content of rutoside, while population no. 2 was distinguished by the highest content of hyperoside, caffeoylmalic and chlorogenic acid. Common valerian (Valeriana officinalis L.) is an important medicinal plant revealing sedative, hypotensive, anti-spasmodic and anxiolytic activity. The purpose of the study was to determine the intraspecific variability of the common valerian growing wild in Poland and the 'Lubelski' landrace, as to their developmental traits, chemical composition and selected genetic parameters. Both wild-growing populations (19) and the landrace (1) were evaluated under ex situ conditions. Observations of the underground organs parameters, both developmental and chemical (according to the European Pharmacopoeia) were carried out in the first year of the plant's development, while the characteristics of the aboveground organs, followed by the sowing value of seeds (according to the International Seed Testing Association)—in the second year. The genetic analyses were performed using the NGS-DArT-seq method. Results indicate the presence of five different gene pools covering the regions of population's origin, with a gene flow within and between them. A high level of developmental and chemical variabilities among the wild-growing populations was noticed, however without a clear relation to the region of the origin. The mass of underground organs ranged from 107.4 to 403.6 g FW × plant−1 with the content of sesquiterpenic acids at the level of 0.004–0.094%. Population no 18 was distinguished by the highest content of sesquiterpenic acids and the relatively high mass of underground organs, followed by the admixture of the gene pool, typical for the 'Lubelski' landrace. Unlike the 'Lubelski' landrace, the wild-growing populations were characterized by a high amount of an essential oils (3.90 to 10.04 mL/kg), which may be promising from the perspective of their potential use. Objectives: The head constitutes 6% of the total body weight, which is linked to the cervical spine and all other joints through the kinematic chain by various muscles. The forward head posture is one of the most common postural disorders and seems to be especially dangerous. The goal of the work was to assess the impact of 4 weeks of training neck and nape muscles on the head posture.Material and Methods: The subjects were 20 participants, who performed neck exercises for 20 days. The head posture in a sagittal and frontal plane was assessed photogrammetrically twice: before and after the exercises. The following have been used for the assessment: craniovertebral (CV) angle, head tilt angle (HT), and frontal head tilt angle (FHT).Results: After a 20-day program of neck and nape exercises the values of specific angles were compared. The results indicated significant changes in the head posture. In the sagittal plane: the average value of the CV angle before the training was 47.17°, and 50.82° after the training; the average value of the HT angle before the exercises was at 20.99°, and 24.31° after. In the frontal plane the average value of the FHT angle before the exercises was at 2.71°, and after 20 days of training the average value of this angle decreased to 2°.Conclusions: The results demonstrate that a short, home-based targeted exercise program can improve head posture. PCM-windows can play an important role in the protection of buildings against overheating but also as systems for effective storage of solar energy. The presented study indicated the optimal solution for the triple-glazed window where one cavity is fullfilled with phase change material (PCM) in temperate climatic conditions characteristic for Poland. Regarding different thicknesses, positions, and temperatures of phase change material, the a recommended solution was determined using the simulation technique. The computational model was developed, numerically verified, and experimentally validated. The entire meteorological year analyses were done for the climatic conditions of Central Europe, considering windows exposed to facing the South. The optimal solution was determined using two methods - the Weighted Sum method and the Fuzzy Sets method. Both point out a variant with a PCM layer located in the inner cavity and the average melting temperature of PCM equal to 25 °C. However, different criteria and sets of linguistic variables in fuzzy sets determined different optimal PCM thicknesses ranging from 5 to 20 mm. • The model differs in the treatment of solar radiation propagation in PCM-glazing. • The Mushy Volume Tracking and Net Radiation methods were used in the simulation. • Latent heat storage was simulated without any predefined melt/solidify scenarios. • The Weighted Sum and the Fuzzy Sets methods were used for optimization. Population studies indicate a strong relationship between birth weight (BW) and body size in later life. However, BW as a variable was never accounted for in studies on the relationship between attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and overweight. This study aims to assess the relationship between ADHD and overweight with control of birth weight and other confounding factors. Prevalence of overweight was compared in clinical sample of 219 boys with ADHD and 396 boys without ADHD, aged 6-18 years. The following factors were controlled: BW, parents income and education level, place of residence, ADHD type, selected comorbid disorders and stimulant treatment. Overweight and obesity were diagnosed according to the criteria proposed by the International Obesity Task Force. Logistic regression analysis was used to estimate the association between ADHD and the prevalence of overweight and obesity. Boys with ADHD differed significantly from the control group in distribution of low BW (8.2 vs. 3.0 %, χ = 8.23, p = 0.02). Low BW was associated with a lower prevalence of overweight than normal and high BW (0 vs. 12.14 %, χ = 4.12, p = 0.04). Overweight was observed significantly more often in boys with ADHD (17.3 vs. 8.3 %, χ = 11.23, p < 0.001) even after adjustment for BW and other variables (OR = 2.44, 95 % CI 1.38-4.29, p = 0.002) and after controlling for ADHD type, stimulant treatment and selected comorbid disorders. Independently to applied analysis, obesity was not associated with ADHD. Lower birth weight is over twice more often observed in boys with ADHD than in control group. Although this phenomenon may reduce the rate of overweight in the studied group, ADHD remains strongly associated with increased prevalence of overweight. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Suicide is an important clinical problem in psychiatric patients. The highest risk of suicide attempts is noted in affective disorders. Objective: The aim of the study was to look for suicide risk factors among sociodemographic and clinical factors, family history and stressful life events in patients with diagnosis of unipolar and bipolar affective disorder (597 patients, 563 controls). Method: In the study, the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV Axis I Disorders and the Operational Criteria Diagnostic Checklist questionnaires, a questionnaire of family history, and a questionnaire of personality disorders and life events were used. Results: In the bipolar and unipolar affective disorders sample, we observed an association between suicidal attempts and the following: family history of psychiatric disorders, affective disorders and psychoactive substance abuse/dependence; inappropriate guilt in depression; chronic insomnia and early onset of unipolar disorder. The risk of suicide attempt differs in separate age brackets (it is greater in patients under 45 years old). No difference in family history of suicide and suicide attempts; marital status; offspring; living with family; psychotic symptoms and irritability; and coexistence of personality disorder, anxiety disorder or substance abuse/dependence with affective disorder was observed in the groups of patients with and without suicide attempt in lifetime history. Life cycle assessment is an environmental method which estimates either a process or a building material within the cradle-to-grave cycle. Presently, it is one of a few tools that include all factors which may influence the environment. The authors used this tool to prove effects connected with potential efficient energy levels and a reduction in CO2 emissions within a building's life cycle. For the purpose of our analyses, several types of single-family building were chosen and they were subjected to analysis in the fixed location of Warsaw. The research scope included a numerical analysis of the buildings concerning the level of embodied energies and the emission of greenhouse gases. The performed analysis proved that, within a 50-year cycle, the difference between the embodied energy from the best and worst building choices can amount to 14.87%, whereas a reduction in embodied carbon emissions can reach 20.65%. Each change in the building's form and the type of building materials used, regardless of the usable area, influence the environmental impact. Therefore, this paper concludes that LCA, as a management tool, should be used cyclically as part of each phase of the design process. A multi-criteria method for selecting architectural solutions was proposed which considered minimum cumulative primary energy, minimum cumulative carbon emission and minimum cost of constructing a building. Common thyme (Thymus vulgaris L., Lamiaceae) is regarded as one of the most important aromatic plant used both as a spice and medicine. The aim of this work was to investigate the yield and quality of common thyme grown for a fresh herb, cultivated in the organic farming system, within the temperate climate in Poland. Two methods of cultivation were applied: open field and foil tunnel. Three successive cuts of herb were possible to obtain during vegetation season, from the middle of July until the end of September. The raw material was analyzed for the content of essential oil (by hydrodestillation), phenolic acids and flavonoids according to Polish pharmacopeia (PP 6th). The composition of essential oil was determined by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Sensory evaluation was carried out by quantitative descriptive analysis (QDA) with a trained panelist. The yield of fresh herb was visibly higher when regards cultivation under foil tunnel in comparison to open field, reaching up to 6.74 kg FW × 10 m2. The content of essential oil as well as the percentage share of thymol (a dominant constituent, achieving up to 57.08%) decreased with consecutive herbal cuts. The opposite result was observed for phenolic compounds (phenolic acids and flavonoids). It was shown that the amount of flavonoids was similar in both variants of cultivation, while phenolic acids were accumulated at higher level in the open field conditions. Sensory analysis indicated on slight differences in odor and taste attributes, between samples of fresh herb collected from open field and foil tunnel. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Common valerian (Valeriana officinalis L.) is one of the most important medicinal plants, with a mild sedative, nervine, antispasmodic and relaxant effect. Despite a substantial number of studies on this species, the genetic diversity and population structure have not yet been analyzed. Here, we use a next-generation sequencing-based Diversity Array Technology sequencing (DArT-seq) technique to analyze Polish gene bank accessions that originated from wild populations and cultivars. The major and, also, the most astounding result of our work is the low level of observed heterozygosity of individual plants from natural populations, despite the fact that the species is widespread in the studied area. Inbreeding in naturally outcrossing species such as valerian decreases reproductive success. The analysis of the population structure showed the potential presence of a metapopulation in the central part of Poland and the formation of a distinct gene pool in the Bieszczady Mountains. The results also indicate the presence of the cultivated gene pool within wild populations in the region where the species is cultivated for the needs of the pharmaceutical industry, and this could lead to structural and genetic imbalances in wild populations. Oregano (Origanum vulgare L.) is an important medicinal and aromatic plant. The purpose of this study was to determine the possibility of organic cultivation of 'Greek oregano' (Origanum vulgare L. subsp. hirtum) within temperate climate conditions in Poland. Two variants of field experiments were applied: open field and foil tunnel. Results showed that plants cultivated under foil tunnel were characterized by almost twice the mass of the herb when compared to those from open field (76.49 and 49.44 g of dry mass per plant, respectively). The herb was analyzed for total content of essential oil, phenolic acids, flavonoids, chlorophyll a and b. The composition of essential oil was determined by GC–MS (gas chromatography - mass spectrometry). Raw material harvested from plants cultivated in foil tunnel was distinguished by higher content of flavonoids, chlorophyll a and b as well as essential oils in comparison to those from open field. However, the content of phenolic acids was higher in herb collected from plants grown in open field. There was no clear relationship between the cultivation method and essential oil composition, where carvacrol was a dominant (up to 73.85%). Observed differences concerning both yield and content of biologically active compounds seems to be associated with various climatic parameters (especially temperature) recorded in both variants of cultivation. The results of sensory evaluation (Quantitative Descriptive Analysis) showed that the herb from foil tunnel was characterized by a slightly higher intensity of coniferous and less spicy odor notes, as well as more astringent taste, in comparison to the one from open field. This paper analyzes the technical and economic possibilities of integrating distributed energy resources (DERs) and energy-storage systems (ESSs) into a virtual power plant (VPP) and operating them as a single power plant. The purpose of the study is to assess the economic efficiency of the VPP model, which is influenced by several factors such as energy price and energy production. Ten scenarios for the VPP were prepared on the basis of the installed capacities of a hydropower plant (HPP), rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV), and energy-storage system (ESS), as well as weather conditions, in Poland. On the basis of technical conditions, it was assumed that the maximum power capacity of the ESS equaled 1.5 MW. The economic efficiency analysis presented in this paper demonstrated that, in seven years, the VPP will achieve a positive value of the net present value (NPV) for a scenario with 0.5 MW battery storage and rainy summers. Furthermore, sensitivity analysis was conducted on price factors and DER production volume. The price variable had a major impact on the NPV value for all scenarios. The scenario with a 0.5 MW battery and typical summers was highly sensitive to all factors, and its sensitivity decreased as the ESS capacity grew from 0.5 to 1.5 MW. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: Previous studies have associated attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) with growth deviations and obesity. However, available data regarding the growth of children with ADHD in their early childhood are insufficient. Therefore, we aimed to examine whether there are differences in body size between preschool boys with and without ADHD.Methods: The study used cross-sectional and retrospective longitudinal data concerning 112 boys with ADHD and a community-based sample of 308 boys without ADHD. The groups were homogeneous in terms of socioeconomic status, place of residence, term of birth, and birth weight. The average age of diagnosis was 8.3 years, and none of boys had been treated with stimulants before they were 7 years of age. Comparisons were made at the ages of 2, 4, and 6 years, for World Health Organization (WHO)-norm-standardized height, weight, body mass index (BMI), prevalence of underweight, overweight, and obesity. Separate analysis were made for the cross-sectional measurements of current body size.Results: Boys with ADHD at the age of 2 had significantly lower z scores for weight (t=-1.98, p=0.04) and BMI (t=-2.09, p=0.04), and at the age of 4 for weight (t=-2.05, p=0.04) than the boys from the control group. A significantly lower percentage of overweight/obesity was observed in boys with ADHD at the age of 2 in comparison with the control group. At the age of 6, boys with ADHD were underweight more often. Cross-sectional analysis of current body size showed that boys with ADHD had lower z scores for height (t=-3.08, p=0.002) and higher z scores (t=3.13, p=0.002) for BMI. Overweight was more frequent in this group.Conclusions: Preschool boys with ADHD (age of 2-6 years) have a tendency toward lower body weight than their peers. But in subsequent phases of development, they are shorter and more frequently overweight than boys without ADHD, when place of residence, socioeconomic status, term of birth, birth weight, comorbid conditions, and treatment are controlled. The aim of the study was to investigate the chemical variability of small-leaved lime ( Tilia cordata Mill.) growing wild in the eastern area of Poland, in terms of content and composition of phenolic compounds (phenolic acids and flavonoids), composition of essential oil and content of mucilage in flowers. Analyzed populations differed significantly when regards the accumulation of biologically active compounds. The total content of phenolic acids ranged from 0.17 to 1.87 g × 100 g −1 , flavonoids from 0.09 to 0.52 g × 100 g −1 , and mucilage from 0.6 to 3.0 g × 100 g −1 . Using validated HPLC-DAD method, the chemical composition of phenolic acids and flavonoids were determined. Among phenolic acids, four compounds were identified with vanillic acid as the dominant one (391.5–1718.0 mg × 100 g −1 ). Among flavonoids, nine compounds were found. Rutoside and (−)-epicatechin (tannin precursor) were present in the highest amounts (1264.1–4654.6 mg × 100 g −1 and 1000.3–4745.6 mg × 100 g −1 , respectively). GC–MS and GC-FID were used to perform the qualitative and quantitative analyze of the essential oil. The major compounds were alkanes: tricosane (5.7–20.7%), pentacosane (3.0–6.1%) and heneicosane (1.1–6.1%), as well as acetophenon (3.5–6.9%), nonanal (1.3–7.8%) and nonanoic acid (3.9–18.2%). Taking into account functional traits in the breeding practice should lead to a longer productive life of cows. However, despite the increased contribution of these traits in bull selection indices, their daughters are frequently culled as early as the 2nd or 3rd lactation. The problem is whether and to what extent the genetic potential of animals is realized in the production practice. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine the associations between the breeding value (BV) of bulls and their daughters for cow longevity and culling reasons in the Holstein-Friesian cattle population in Poland. Data for 532 062 cows culled in 2012, 2015, and 2018 were analyzed. A majority of 5 045 cow sires originated from Poland, Germany, France, the Netherlands, and the United States. The highest variation in the contribution of culling reasons was for the cows culled at the age of 2-4 years. The contribution of the culling reasons, analyzed in relation to the cow culling age, remained similar and the only exception was culling because of old age, for which a significant increase was observed only for the culling age of at least 9 years (13.8%), which was reached by only 7.3% of the cows. The sires were characterized by generally high BV for conformation and reproductive traits. However, they had, at most, the average genetic potential for functional longevity. There were a number of beneficial associations found between the BV of bulls and the distribution of culling reasons in their daughters. For example, it concerns relations between the somatic cell score in milk and culling due to udder diseases and low milk yield, between the interval from calving to first insemination and low milk yield, between the protein yield and old age, or between the BV for certain conformation traits (size, udder) and cow culling due to age. In these cases, as the BV increased for a given trait, the contribution of the corresponding cow culling reason tended to decrease. Our study showed that it seems reasonable to consider Holstein-Friesian cows aged at least 9 years at culling to be long-living animals. This is primarily evidenced by the rapid increase in the culling due to old age in relation to younger cows. Nowadays the above age limit can be suggested as a criterion of longevity for Holstein-Friesian cows but the criterion should be updated to the relation genotype-environment-economy that tends to change over time., (Copyright © 2021 The Author(s). The aim of the study was to determine the biodiversity of flies (Diptera) occurring in livestock buildings and in their direct proximity, in various systems of ruminants rearing. Flies were collected by net sweeping during the summer, in two cowsheds (one large-scale, and one traditional farm), and one specialist sheepfold, located in the Lesser Poland region of Poland. The insects were captured – both inside and outside the premises – three times (at 10:00, 12:00 and 14:00) on selected warm and sunny days of June, July and September, when animals were assumed to be the most harassed. A total of 18365 flies belonging to 13 families were obtained. The largest relative abundance of Diptera were from the Drosophilidae family (61.4%), and dominating Muscidae species – Musca domestica L., 1758 (19.2%) and Stomoxys calcitrans (L., 1758) (5.7%). More than half (55.5%) of all flies were captured in the morning, and their vast majority not inside a livestock building (28.2%), but in its close proximity (71.8%). This was particularly true of the large-scale cattle farm. The smallest number of insects, although with the highest biodiversity, were collected at the sheepfold. Regardless of their particular animal preferences, the insect species found were commonly occurring in different livestock sectors.
