Exposure to hexavalent chromium Cr(VI) may occur in several occupational activities, placing workers in many industries at risk for potential related health outcomes. Untargeted metabolomics was applied to investigate changes in metabolic pathways in response to Cr(VI) exposure. We obtained our data from a study population of 220 male workers with exposure to Cr(VI) and 102 male controls from Belgium, Finland, Poland, Portugal and the Netherlands within the HBM4EU Chromates Study. Urinary metabolite profiles were determined using liquid chromatography mass spectrometry, and differences between post-shift exposed workers and controls were analyzed using principal component analysis. Based on the first two principal components, we observed clustering by industrial chromate application, such as welding, chrome plating, and surface treatment, distinct from controls and not explained by smoking status or alcohol use. The changes in the abundancy of excreted metabolites observed in workers reflect fatty acid and monoamine neurotransmitter metabolism, oxidative modifications of amino acid residues, the excessive formation of abnormal amino acid metabolites and changes in steroid and thyrotropin-releasing hormones. The observed responses could also have resulted from work-related factors other than Cr(VI). Further targeted metabolomics studies are needed to better understand the observed modifications and further explore the suitability of urinary metabolites as early indicators of adverse effects associated with exposure to Cr(VI). The study deals with the application of cluster analysis (CA) and non-parametric tests (Shapiro-Wilk, Kruskal-Wallis, Dunn, U Mann-Whitney) to classify and interpret of a monitoring data set for Odra River water quality assessment based on concentration values of radiochemical parameters. The data set represents results for 3 alpha emitters (Po, U and Pu) measured in surface water samples collected at 13 different sampling locations (5 in major Odra stream while 8 in Odra tributaries) within four seasons: winter, spring, summer and autumn, in the framework of 1 year-term quality monitoring research. The correlation analysis of polonium, uranium and plutonium data indicates that significant values of Spearman's correlation coefficient appears between Po and Pu ( r = 0.55 in autumn and 0.77 in winter as well as 0.49 in all year), while statistical significant correlation between uranium and plutonium as well as uranium and polonium were not found. In the Odra drainage basin, the biggest differences were observed in the case of U. The hypothesis about possible geographic and seasonal differences between concentration of Po, U and Pu in the Odra River catchment area was verified by cluster analysis (CA). Finally, to asses if there are statistically significant differences in mean concentration value of Po, U and Pu for Vistula and Odra Rivers drainage basins were obtained by used of the non-parametric tests. Comparing to Vistula catchment area, statistically different concentration of Po and Pu in all year was observed for river samples collected on Odra drainage basin. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Total concentrations of mercury were determined using cold-vapor atomic absorption spectroscopy (CV-AAS) in the fruiting bodies of 16 species of wild mushrooms and underlying soil (0-10 cm) substrates collected in the areas of the Communes of Morag and Łukta in the county of Ostróda in northeastern Poland in 1997-1998. A total of 174 composite samples of caps, 174 stalks, 80 whole fruiting bodies (collectively 1254 specimens), and 252 soils were examined. Among several species of mushrooms analyzed, the greatest concentrations were between 1300 and 71000 ng.g(-1) of dry matter. These levels were found in the caps of Sweating mushroom (Clitocybe rivulosa), King Bolete (Boletus edulis), and Common Puffball (Lycoperdon perlatum) and also were characterized by the highest bioconcentration factors (BCF) for Hg, which ranged between 160 +/- 82 and 110 +/- 34. The cap to stalk quotient for mercury concentrations was approximately 2 for most of the species except Poison Pax (Paxilus involutus), which had a greater concentration in caps than in stalks and a quotient of 4.4 +/- 7.2. Hg concentrations in the underlying soil substrates (0-10 cm layer) ranged between 21 +/- 21 and 390 +/- 130 ng.g(-1) of dry matter. The results showed that the consumption of mushrooms, considered to be the sole dietary source of mercury at the highest or mean element concentrations found, is not hazardous at daily ingestion rates of less than 70 and 210 g of fresh product, which would result in a hazard index value of less than unity.

The concentration, pattern, bioaccumulation and biomagnification features of many chlorobiphenyl congeners including non- and mono-ortho chlorine substituted members have been determined in a pelagic food chain including mixed phyto- and zooplankton, herring (Clupea harengus), harbour porpoise (Phocoena phocoena) and black cormorants (Phalacrocorax carbo sinensis) collected from the southern part of the Baltic Proper. TCDD (tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin) toxic equivalents (TEQs) in plankton, herring, harbour porpoise and cormorants were 0.42, 5.3, 79 and 2,700 pg g(-1) lipid weight, respectively. Concentrations of total polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in plankton, herring, harbour porpoise and cormorants were 1.9, 120, 8700 and 2,100 ng g(-1) wet weight (210, 1,300, 10,000 and 42,000 ng g(-1) lipid weight) respectively. Herring, harbour porpoise and black cormorant apparently bioaccumulate many PCBs found in their food, and the values of the bioaccumulation factors (BAFs) for PCBs were approximately 10 in herring, 35 in harbour porpoise and up to 300 in breast muscle of cormorants. Harbour porpoise clearly is able to metabolize the most toxic non-ortho PCBs (no. 77, 126 and 169) and a few mono-ortho PCBs (no. 114, 123 and 156), while all non- and mono-ortho PCBs are bioaccumulated by herring. Penta-, hexa- and hepta-CBs were the dominatant homologue classes both in the muscle tissue and liver. PCB congeners nos. 201, 209, 172/192, 194 and 195 were characterized by the largest BAFs (between 100 and 300). Principal component analysis has been used to analyse the interdependences and differences in the CB congener accumulation patterns between the components of the investigated pelagic food web.
