The article focuses on the political situation in Poland as of 1985, and its implications for international relations. Political analysts argue that General Wojciech Jaruzelski's decision to impose martial law in 1981 should be judged on moral and ideological grounds. Some analysts emphasize the economic and geopolitical consequences of the political crisis in order to argue the need for a special U.S. policy toward Poland. To support the claim that the Polish issue has some international relevance, it has to be established that the majority of Poles hope for an American influence on their nation's destiny.
