This study aims to investigate the nature of phonological awareness in young L3 learners, and the extent to which it changes over time as L2 and L3 learning progresses. Two groups of 12 closely matched multilinguals (total= 24, aged 12-13), who shared their L2 (English) but their L1/L3 (German/Polish) were mirrored, mimicked L2 and L3 accents in their L1 speech and reflected over their mimicry performance at the beginning and at the end of the first year of L3 instruction. Based on both quantitative and qualitative analyses, the results showed a differentiated range of manifestations of phonological awareness in the two groups of young multilinguals, possibly explicable by the phonological distance of their L2 and L3 in relation to their L1. No significant changes in the learners' L2/L3 phonological awareness were detected over the school year. In addition, combined group results showed a moderate correlation for the learners' L2 mimicry and foreign accent ratings at both testing times and for their L3 mimicry and foreign accent ratings at the second testing. Insights gained from individual phonological awareness profiles suggest, however, that this relationship may not hold for all L3 learners. The findings are also discussed from a methodological perspective.

Purpose: The objective of the paper is to present the effects of the evaluation study of the Polish project "Youth Vote +: Social and civic activation of young people" -- a comprehensive education program in the field of civic engagement, based on three practical pillars: conscious electoral participation (Pillar 1), involvement in civic activities (Pillar 2) and political discussion and opinion expression (Pillar 3). Methodology: We developed an evaluation study that was aligned with the nature of the program. To capture the change in civic competence and skills, we used quantitative (a retrospective pretest design and one-group pretest-posttest design) and qualitative (focus group interviews) methods. The former enabled us to achieve robust measurement of increases in competence, while the latter gave us better insight into participants' perceptions of the project. Findings: The evaluation study documented the effectiveness of the program regarding a behavioral dimension, but cognitive development was insufficient relative to goals. The study also allowed for critical evaluation of the program and its modifications.

The nature and effects of party identification in post-communist democracies have been an object of disputes, as the existing research does not lead to conclusive results. The present paper contributes to the discussion with analyses of four-fold typology of partisans (Rose, Mishler 1998), who either have a positive or negative party identification, or both, or none. We embed this typology in a contemporary Polish context. Using the PNES data for the 2005–2019 elections, we examine the proportions of each type of partisanship and their stability in time. We also verify what their determinants are and what their influence on electoral participation is. Our results demonstrate that positive and negative party identifications are of rational origin, although since 2015, expressive partisanship is also developing. We also prove that positive, negative, and combined motivations make Poles more prone to vote, contributing to the stability of democracy on a behavioral level. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The objective of the paper is to explore young people's motives for pursuing entrepreneurial opportunities instead of a professional career in the public sector or a corporation. As young people increasingly consider alternatives to a traditional career, it is useful to understand what lies behind their entrepreneurial career choice in order to advise small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) how to attract a young workforce. A qualitative study consisting of 16 in-depth, semi-structured interviews with young entrepreneurs in Poland, Slovenia and the United Kingdom (UK) identifies a variety of internal and external factors influencing the entrepreneurs' career decisions that were found to be largely homogenous across different countries and contexts. These influences operate at micro, mezzo and macro levels. The findings are explained through Kegan's theory of self-meaning making as well as the SME context and particularities, providing an understanding of what attracts and deters young people facing career choices.
