Introduction: In ORAL Surveillance, incidence rates (IRs) of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) and malignancies (excluding non-melanoma skin cancer [NMSC]) in cardiovascular (CV)-risk-enriched patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) were numerically greater with tofacitinib in North America versus the rest of the world, due to underlying risk factors. Here, we evaluated the safety and efficacy of tofacitinib versus tumor necrosis factor inhibitors (TNFi) among patients with RA across geographical regions. Methods: Patients with RA in ORAL Surveillance (NCT02092467), who were aged ≥ 50 years with ≥ 1 additional CV risk factor, received tofacitinib 5 or 10 mg twice daily or TNFi; 45.9% were from either Poland or North America. This post hoc analysis stratified patients by region (Poland, North America, Other countries). Efficacy endpoints included Clinical Disease Activity Index, Disease Activity Score in 28 joints, with C-reactive protein (DAS28-4[CRP]), and Health Assessment Questionnaire-Disability Index (HAQ-DI). IRs and hazard ratios for adverse events were reported. Results: Of 4362 patients (Poland, N = 759; North America, N = 1243; Other countries, N = 2360), more patients from North America versus Poland/Other countries had CV risk factors such as body mass index ≥ 30 kg/m2 and history of diabetes/hypertension; however, more patients from Poland versus other regions were ever smokers and more patients from Poland/North America versus Other countries had history of coronary artery disease. MACE IRs were similar in North America and Poland, and numerically higher versus Other countries. IRs for malignancies (excluding NMSC) were numerically higher in North America versus Poland/Other countries with tofacitinib. Serious infections IRs were numerically higher in North America versus Poland across treatments. Venous thromboembolism/all-cause mortality IRs were generally comparable across regions. DAS28-4(CRP)/HAQ-DI improvements were generally lowest in North America. Conclusions: Differences in safety outcomes were driven by the presence of baseline risk factors; North America and Poland demonstrated a higher proportion of patients with some baseline CV risk factors/comorbidities versus Other countries. Objectives: To evaluate the pricing of etanercept (ETN) reference and biosimilar drugs in a changing competitive to monopolized market. Methods: We conducted a comprehensive, retrospective analysis of ETN market competition, specifically changes in tender price based on shifts in market monopoly, including the effects on cost evolution, in the off-patent market in Poland. We included a total of 473 tenders for ETN purchase in dedicated biologic drug reimbursement programs, covering both pre-filled syringes and automatic injectors. This study covers the timeframe from November 2017 to December 2023, throughout which we evaluated a unique setting of ETN market re-monopolization from the perspective of payer, hospital and patient benefits resulting from changing cost calculations. Results: Between 2017 and 2022, Erelzi was recorded as having the largest total tender volume (59%), with a mean price [per ETN daily defined dose (DDD)] of €7.28, followed by Enbrel (31%, €8.34) and Benepali (10%, €9.45), respectively. Over the last 6 months of waning market competition, the mean price for winning bids was estimated at €5.69. After market re-monopolization by an ETN biosimilar, the mean price of winning bids increased to €8.09, and continued to increase (€9.71) in the last 6 months of available follow-up. In contrast to the competitive era, no significant relationship between tender volume and winning price was recorded after re-monopolization. In the most recent tenders, mean ETN prices increased up to €15.82, nearly tripling the lowest prices of the competitive market period. In the early re-monopolization market, mean annual treatment cost per patient is estimated at over €3800, which exceeds therapy costs in the prior competitive market years, and is expected to increase to over €6200 based on the most recent tenders. On a healthcare system level, this corresponds to over €3.42 million excess costs due to market monopoly. Higher ETN prices resulted in downstream failure of regulatory incentives to promote affordable biologics. Due to higher pricing, hospitals lost over an estimated €2.52 million, with possible risk of treatment restrictions. For the same reason, the public payer achieved comparable savings, allowing for partial coverage of higher reimbursement expenses. Conclusions: This nation-level scenario of market re-monopolization by a biosimilar drug confirms net loss and excess costs for the healthcare payer, as can be expected from economic theory. To assess the incidence and prevalence of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in Poland for the period 2013–2021, total and dependent on gender, age, region and serological status. Information on reported National Health Fund (NHF) health services and reimbursed prescriptions were used, defining an RA patient as a person who had at least two visits in different quarters with ICD-10 code M05 or M06 and at the same time filled at least one reimbursed prescription for a drug whose active substance is methotrexate, sulfasalazine, leflunomide or was treated with biologic disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (bDMRDs) or targeted synthetic DMARDs (tsDMARDs) as part of a drug program financed by the National Health Fund. The nationwide standardised incidence rate of RA in 2021 was 29 persons per 100,000 population (18 per 100,000 population of seropositive vs. 11 per 100,000 population of seronegative RA). The prevalence of RA in Poland in 2021 was 689.0 people per 100,000 population, a total of 0.7% (1.1% in women and 0.3% in men). The incidence of seronegative RA was approximately 38%. The majority of new RA diagnoses were in the sixth and seventh decades of life, irrespective of patients' gender. The results allow RA to be classified as a disease with a significant social impact. A trend of later onset of RA has been observed, which requires special consideration of the needs of patients over 55 years of age. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The importance of mushrooms as a food source is continually increasing. To investigate how environmental factors affect the nutritional value of mushrooms, we harvested them in eastern Poland, south-central Germany, and northwestern Belgium in plots with similar environmental conditions but varying in tree species composition and richness. We used gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS) to analyze the fatty acid (FA) content of the mushrooms. Fungal species identity explained the largest part (40%) of the total variation in FA concentration and composition. Environmental factors accounted for 1–12% of variation. The concentration of FA, especially saturated fatty acids, decreased with increasing understory cover and increasing nitrogen concentration in the topsoil. The effect of tree species richness or tree species identity was negligible. Our results suggest that the nutritional value of mushrooms depends mainly on the species identity of fungi, but that their FA content is slightly higher in forests with less undergrowth and in nitrogen-poor soils. The mining bee (Andrena spp.) play a key role in ensuring plant and animal diversity. The present study examines their diversity in a post-agricultural landscape exemplified by the Kampinos National Park (KNP), a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in Poland. The following hypotheses were addressed: (H1) the mining bees demonstrate a narrow ecological amplitude, (H2) there are no indicator species for particular habitats, and (H3) the studied mining bees have the same ecological preferences to those presented in the literature. A total of 40 catch per unit effort samples (CPUE) were collected across various habitats with different soil humidity. Forty-six species were recorded, representing 46% of mining bees and approximately 10% of the known Polish bee fauna. Nineteen of the recorded species (41%) were assigned to CR-NT threat categories, indicating that the national park plays a significant role in preserving mining bee species diversity and their conservation. None of the hypotheses (H1, H2, H3) were confirmed. The mining bees were found to demonstrate a wide ecological amplitude. Surprisingly, habitats located in dry and wet soils were both characterised by high abundance and species richness. Seventeen indicators were distinguished among the dominant and rarer species. Our findings suggest that Andrena nigroaenea and A. ventralis (lower humidity), as well as A. alfkenella and A. minutuloides (higher humidity), have different significant relationships with habitat soil humidity to those reported in the literature. Background. 27 percent of PHC providers in Poland employ the healthcare coordinator. Objectives. The aim was to determine the expected competencies of the coordinator in light of the needs of employers and the possibilities of an educational system. Material and methods. In the first stage, 24 study programs were analyzed in terms of qualifications of a new profession. In the second, a survey was conducted to assess the usefulness of knowledge, skills and social competencies among the representatives of 22 PHC providers. In the third, an expert panel developed the key competencies of the coordinator. Results. The analysis identified a number of new, unique qualifications. In the area of knowledge: understanding of work in PHC including new concepts (patient-centered care, value-based care, deinstitutionalization), population approach, key healthcare measures, interpersonal and health communication, basics of clinical work of all members of an interdisciplinary team, reporting of services. In the area of skills: communication using call-center systems, organization of teamwork, identification of patients for HC interventions in IT systems, effective recruitment, evaluation of PHC activities, health coaching and advocacy, providing health campaigns in social media. With regard to social competencies: the coordinator should build and maintain permanent relationships between the members of an interdisciplinary teams, be open to changes and new solutions, can be a guide for a patient and has a patient-centric attitude. We defined the professional profile of an iPHC coordinator as a guide oriented on patient’s needs, who is open to changes and innovations and who is effective in communication and interdisciplinary team-work. Lipid disorders are the most common (even 70%) and worst monitored cardiovascular risk factor (only 1/4 of patients in Poland and in CEE countries are on the low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) goal). To improve this, clear and simple diagnostic criteria should be introduced for all components of the lipid profile. These are the updated guidelines of the two main scientific societies in Poland in the area -- the Polish Society of Laboratory Diagnostics (PSLD) and the Polish Lipid Association (PoLA), which, in comparison to those from 2020, introduce few important changes in recommendations (two main lipid targets, new recommendations on LDL-C measurements, calculations new goals for triglycerides, new recommendations on remnants and small dense LDL) that should help the practitioners to be early with the diagnosis of lipid disorders and in the effective monitoring (after therapy initiation), and in the consequence to avoid the first and recurrent cardiovascular events. The mapping of invasive plant species is essential for effective ecosystem control and planning, especially in protected areas. One of the widespread invasive plants that threatens the species richness of Natura 2000 habitats in Europe is the large-leaved lupine (Lupinus polyphyllus). In our study, this species was identified at two Natura 2000 sites in southern Poland using airborne HySpex hyperspectral images, and support vector machine (SVM) and random forest (RF) classifiers. Aerial and field campaigns were conducted three times during the 2016 growing season (May, August, and September). An iterative accuracy assessment was performed, and the influence of the number of minimum noise fraction (MNF) bands on the obtained accuracy of lupine identification was analyzed. The highest accuracies were obtained for the August campaign using 30 MNF bands as input data (median F1 score for lupine was 0.82–0.85), with lower accuracies for the May (F1 score: 0.77–0.81) and September (F1 score: 0.78–0.80) campaigns. The use of more than 30 MNF bands did not significantly increase the classification accuracy. The SVM and RF algorithms allowed us to obtain comparable results in both research areas (OA: 89–94%). Simple Summary: A study of digger wasps was carried out along a gradient of forest stands in river valleys in northern Poland. One hundred and thirty six species were recorded, representing over half of all Polish digger wasp species. These included 30 species on the Red List of Endangered Animals in Poland. Some additional information on prey species and food plants was also collected. Natural succession to woodland was associated with a change in species composition, but principally with a decline in species richness and diversity. This study of digger wasps (Hymenoptera: Spheciformes) was carried out in the cultural landscape of the Drwęca, Lower Vistula, and Warta river valleys in northern Poland during 2011–2013. The study was undertaken on sites representing a succession gradient from dry grasslands to high levels of tree cover which we hypothesised would influence the structure of digger wasp communities. During our research additional information on flower use, insect prey, and phenology was also recorded and is reported here, revealing dependencies between woodland cover and both the prey and nesting types of digger wasps. A total of 136 species were recorded, i.e., nearly 56% of all Spheciformes species recorded from Poland. Among the species collected, 30 were on the Red List of Threatened Animals in Poland. Most endangered species were recorded in psammophilous grasslands, which are open habitats, and the least in mesic sites. These results significantly update the known distribution of the digger wasp in northern Poland. Knowledge on the biology of digger wasps in Poland is also supplemented by information on the feeding of larvae of 14 species and information on food plants visited by imago digger wasps. In this article, a machine‐learning‐based tool for calibrating numerical forecasts of near‐surface air temperature is proposed. The study area covers Poland representing a temperate type of climate with transitional features and highly variable weather. The direct output of numerical weather prediction (NWP) models is often biased and needs to be adjusted to observed values. Forecasters have to reconcile forecasts from several NWP models during their operational work. As the proposed method is based on deterministic forecasts from three short‐range limited‐area models (ALARO, AROME and COSMO), it can support them in their decision‐making process. Predictors include forecasts of weather elements produced by the NWP models at synoptic weather stations across Poland and station‐embedded data on ambient orography. The Random Forests algorithm (RF) has been used to produce bias‐corrected forecasts on a test set spanning one year. Its performance was evaluated against the NWP models, a linear combination of all predictors (multiple linear regression, MLR) as well as a basic Artificial Neural Network (ANN). Detailed evaluation was done to identify potential strengths and weaknesses of the model at the temporal and spatial scale. The value of RMSE of a forecast obtained by the RF model was 11% and 27% lower compared to the MLR model and the best‐performing NWP model respectively. The ANN model turned out to be even superior, outperforming RF by around 2.5%. The greatest improvement occurred for warm bias during the nighttime from July to September. The largest difference in forecast accuracy between RF and ANN appeared for temperature drops inApril nights. Poor performance of RF for extreme temperature ranges may be suppressed by training the model on forecast error instead of observed values of the variable. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The current work analyzes uneven regional economic development in Poland, Spain and Ukraine. It was determined that the unevenness of the economic development of the regions of the studied countries can be assessed by comparing statistical indicators, namely the index of the unevenness of the economic development of the countries, the dynamics of changes in the population of the studied countries and the comparison of regional economic statistics, in particular the indicators of the gross regional product. In order to identify the unevenness of regional economic development and justify the possible ways of their smoothing or levelling, the article uses such integral indicators as the coefficient of variation or Williamson’s coefficient of variation, weighted coefficient of variation, relative mean deviation and Theil Index. The study of the indicated indicators made it possible to reveal contradictions in their analysis and the need to calculate additional indicators, as well as the influence of factors of direct and indirect influence on the economic unevenness of the regional development of the studied European countries. Yield and the course of crop vegetation are the result of the interaction between the level of cultivation technology and the course of meteorological conditions, which are a variable production factor. The aim of the study was to quantify the effect of meteorological conditions on the course of development stages and yield of winter wheat cultivated in two technological variants (A1 - medium-intensive and A2 - intensive). The paper uses data on yield and timing of winter wheat development stages from four Experimental Stations for Variety Testing (Pol. Centralny Ośrodek Badania Odmian Roślin Uprawnych - COBORU) experimental stations from 2007-2016 located within the Upper Vistula and Upper Oder River basins. To determine the dependence of the length of development stages of winter wheat on the values of selected meteorological elements, the linear regression metod, correlation coefficient. It was found that the lengths of the selected developmental stages are positively correlated with air temperature and negatively correlated with the sum and number of days with precipitation in these stages. A 1°C increase in air temperature resulted in a shortening of the shooting - heading and heading - full maturity periods by 2.5 and 2.8 days respectively. An increase of 100 mm of precipitation in the periods sowing - full maturity and heading - full maturity resulted in an increase of these periods by 5 and 10 days. Increasing the number of days with precipitation by 10 days in the sowing - full maturity and heading - vax maturity stages resulted in extending these stages by 4.1 to 4.4 and 7 to 7.5 days for the A1 and A2 cropping technologies, respectively. In recent decades there has been growing evidence of the impact of ongoing climate warming on the frequency of rockfalls. However, these are not adequately documented, especially in non-glaciated, high mountain regions of middle latitude. This study comprehensively documents the Turnia Kurczaba rockfall, one of the most significant rockfalls recorded in recent decades in the Tatra Mountains. The precise projections of the volumes and distribution of rock losses and deposits, the determination of the trajectories, modes and speeds of movement of rock material, as well as information on the geological, morphological, and meteorological conditions behind the Turnia Kurczaba rockfall form a unique dataset. The data documents a spectacular episode in the contemporary development of a complex slope system in the Tatras in an all-encompassing way and can be used to validate and calibrate existing models and improve numerical simulations of other rockfalls, both for hazard and risk assessment and slope evolution studies. Moreover, in the context of archival data, they demonstrate that in the Tatra sporadic permafrost zone, only relatively small rockfalls have been recorded in recent decades. Their cause was not the degradation of permafrost but freeze-thaw processes with the co-participation of rainwater and meltwater. The largest of these occur within densely fractured cataclysites, mylonites, and fault breccias. The impact of rockfalls on the morphodynamics of talus slopes is uneven in the storied arranged rock-talus slope systems. Even colluviums belonging to the same slope system can differ in their development rate and regime, and different thermal and wetness drivers can control their evolution. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article presents the results of research in the field of limiting the effects of overvoltages and improving the conditions for the self-extinguishing of transient faults in medium voltage networks with earth fault current compensation. The aim of the research was to estimate the level of overvoltages generated by an earth fault during re-ignition of the electric arc and to assess the possibility of reducing them by increasing the attenuation of the earth fault circuit. The results of the conducted tests show that to increase the attenuation, which ensures a significant effect of limiting such overvoltages, it is enough to change the way of operation of the devices forcing an additional active component of the earth fault current (AWSCz/ACFA). In Poland, such devices are commonly used to improve the effectiveness of earth fault protection. It was also found that the proposed solution enables accurate tuning of the Petersen coil in networks with natural asymmetry of earth capacitances. Therefore, changes in the operation of AWSCz/ACFA devices may have a beneficial effect on the limiting the effects of repeated ignitions during earth faults and, at the same time, enable the accurate tuning of the Petersen coil and increase its ability to extinguish arc-fed faults. Fruit and vegetable processing comes 6th in terms of energy consumption in the agri-food industry. At the same time, 88.4% of the industry's final energy consumption structure is thermal energy, which depends heavily on electricity consumption. In addition, fruit and vegetable processing has a significant impact on the environment due to consumption of significant amounts of water. Reducing these three indicators simultaneously would increase the efficiency of the process while improving environmental protection. This paper proposes neural models of thermal energy, electricity and water consumption for selected major fruit- and vegetable-processing plants in Poland. These models were the basis for formulating a multi-criteria optimization task. Optimization of thermal energy, electricity and water consumption was carried out using genetic algorithms. The optimization results in the sense of Pareto can be the basis for the use of sustainable technology in selected fruit- and vegetable-processing plants. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The correlations between two groups of factors and energy consumption were analysed in four types of dairy plants with different production profiles. Groups of dairy plants with a similar production profile, as well as individual plants, were compared. Energy consumption was most strongly correlated with technical equipment (r = 0.88 – 0.99); this observation can be used by designers to promote better energy conservation measures during plant operation. Energy consumption was highest in plants producing milk powder. Plants specializing in milk powder may also produce up to 8 other dairy products; however, engineering and production factors can significantly contribute to reducing energy consumption, which suggests that energy is being consumed for non-production purposes at these plants. The variation in energy consumption per unit of end-product was best-explained in small dairy plants producing up to 4 products. In analyses of individual plants, energy consumption per unit of end-product was strongly correlated with both the milk-processing output and the production profile. The equations developed in this study, in particular the regression coefficients, can be used to generate additional information for detailed analyses. The structure and level of detail of the independent variables also means that the presented equations can be applied to reducing power consumption of the operated equipment, and for optimizing overall production profiles. The results of the study can be used to model energy consumption in different types of dairy plants and to evaluate their environmental performance. The international literature was reviewed, and the results of research studies analysing the correlations between energy consumption in dairy plants and their environmental impact were cited in the paper. In northern peatlands, reduction of Sphagnum dominance in favour of vascular vegetation is likely to influence biogeochemical processes. Such vegetation changes occur as the water table lowers and temperatures rise. To test which of these factors has a significant influence on peatland vegetation, we conducted a 3‐year manipulative field experiment in Linje mire (northern Poland). We manipulated the peatland water table level (wet, intermediate and dry; on average the depth of the water table was 17.4, 21.2 and 25.3 cm respectively), and we used open‐top chambers (OTCs) to create warmer conditions (on average increase of 1.2°C in OTC plots compared to control plots). Peat drying through water table lowering at this local scale had a larger effect than OTC warming treatment per see on Sphagnum mosses and vascular plants. In particular, ericoid shrubs increased with a lower water table level, while Sphagnum decreased. Microclimatic measurements at the plot scale indicated that both water‐level and temperature, represented by heating degree days (HDDs), can have significant effects on the vegetation. In a large‐scale complementary vegetation gradient survey replicated in three peatlands positioned along a transitional oceanic–continental and temperate–boreal (subarctic) gradient (France–Poland–Western Siberia), an increase in ericoid shrubs was marked by an increase in phenols in peat pore water, resulting from higher phenol concentrations in vascular plant biomass. Our results suggest a shift in functioning from a mineral‐N‐driven to a fungi‐mediated organic‐N nutrient acquisition with shrub encroachment. Both ericoid shrub encroachment and higher mean annual temperature in the three sites triggered greater vascular plant biomass and consequently the dominance of decomposers (especially fungi), which led to a feeding community dominated by nematodes. This contributed to lower enzymatic multifunctionality. The aim of the study was to assess the yield of three soybean varieties of different earliness classes (Merlin, Coraline, and Viola) grown using two sowing dates (early vs. optimal) and different technologies (soil protected with biodegradable film vs. without soil protection–conventional cultivation). A three-year (2019–2021) field experiment was conducted at the Bayer Technical Advisory Center in Chechło, Poland (50°23′ N 18°44′ E). The three-factor experiment was set up in a randomized split-plot design in three replicates. The experimental factors were (i) sowing date, (ii) cultivar, and (ii) cultivation technology. The effect of agrotechnical factors and their interaction with the weather on selected biometric traits and seed yield was assessed. The results indicated that the weather conditions and its interaction with agrotechnical factors significantly influenced the biometric traits and seed yield of soybean. Optimal hydrothermal conditions significantly increased analyzed parameters and seed yield. However, too much rainfall in August had negative effects on biometric traits. It was proved that, early sowing adversely affected soybean yield. Sowing at the optimal date, i.e., the end of April, resulted in a yield of 3.8 t ha−1. The use of biodegradable film in the year with more rainfall increased soybean yield by 1 t ha−1 compared to the year with less rainfall. The early 'Merlin' cultivar grown in the system with biodegradable film produced significantly more pods and seeds per plant and a higher pod weight per plant. The cultivars with a longer growing season ('Viola' and 'Coraline') responded negatively to cultivation in the modern technology. The use of biodegradable film is recommended for cultivars with a short growing season, sown at the optimal time and in regions with moderate to high rainfall totals during the growing season. For the last 20 years Polish education faced turbulent changes, first experiencing a rapid increase in the number of students and the dynamic growth of educational institutions, and then facing the reverse trend of decreasing number of students and universities being closed down or facing serious financial problems. Furthermore, forecasts for the next 10 years predict that most of the non-public universities in Poland will experience serious problems to survive in the market. Facing new challenges, universities changed the way they think about their students and the customer-oriented approach became the dominant management imperative for most of them. Ability to understand the reasons behind students tertiary education decisions emerged as a key issue in increasing enrollments. Predicting students choice determinants may be however more difficult than expected as those choices are dynamic and might change over time. While the literature on the university choice factors is growing, still little is evidenced with regard to the dynamism of the tertiary education decision making process and this article is aimed to contribute to filling this gap. We identified that both aspects of students decision making process--pursuing tertiary education and the choice of the particular university--are a subject of change over time and might be conditioned on economic, social and demographic changes of the given market.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the publication by the Institute of Mother and Child in Warsaw of a document establishing the Polish standards for preventive health care of school-age children and adolescents by general practitioners, which are still in force today. Since then, their health status and the health risk factors have changed. Polish society and its expectations of health care are also different. The Polish economy has grown, and the proportion of the public budget spent on health care has increased. The current system of preventive health care for young people seems to be facing a problem. Over the past decade, the percentage of children and adolescents attending preventive medical visits in Poland has decreased by approximately 30%. During well-care visits, doctors commonly avoid selected physical examinations and sensitive topics, such as sexuality or mental health. It appears that most young people visit doctors only because they falsely believe that check-up visits are mandatory and usually rate the experience negatively. The co-authors of this paper conclude that there is a need for a broad debate on the Polish standards of preventive health care for adolescents and their possible reform, which would lead to their adaptation to the challenges of modern times and the opportunities offered by the progress of medical science and technology. The selection of topics is subjective and certainly does not cover all aspects requiring attention. The increasing incidence of osteoporosis indicates that the disease is a serious public health problem, with about 200 million people being affected worldwide. The aims of this research are to assess the awareness and knowledge about osteoporosis in relation to risk factors, health condition, supplementation used, socio-demographic factors and other variables among osteoporosis patients. The study was conducted in 2016–2018 in osteoporosis clinics in Poland. The study involved 312 patients with a diagnosis of osteoporosis. In the diagnostic survey method, the authors' own questionnaire was used. The results indicate that the more frequent the symptoms associated with the disease, the lower the general self-assessment of the health condition of the respondents (rho = −0.682, p < 0.001). In addition, almost half of the respondents stated that their knowledge of osteoporosis is negligible. Moreover, the use of dietary supplements significantly differentiated respondents in terms of health self-assessed (p < 0.001), and it is noteworthy that users of dietary supplements assessed their health significantly better. We also saw a statistically significant relationship between the self-assessment of knowledge about osteoporosis and the use of dietary supplements (p < 0.001). Accordingly, significantly more respondents rating their knowledge as good or very good used dietary supplements. The conducted study demonstrates the need to educate patients and implement educational programs at central and provincial levels to improve patient knowledge concerning the disease. Purpose: Growing number of hip arthroplasty in Poland performed with the use of metaphyseal stems results from the decreasing age of patients qualified for procedures and is consistent with the corresponding trends in European countries. To this day, a significant population functions after undergoing hip replacement using metal-on-metal implant. This study was aimed at the assessment of the variability of the oxidative system, as well as the concentrations of chromium and cobalt ions in serum and blood and their potential impact on postoperative clinical status. Material and methods: The analysis included 58 men. The first group—operated using J&J DePuy ASR metal-on-metal implant with metaphyseal stem ProximaTm. Second group—operated using K-Implant SPIRON® femoral neck prosthesis in full ceramic articulation. Selected parameters of oxidative stress and the antioxidant system as well as the concentration of metal ions in blood were determined twice. Each patient underwent two clinical evaluations using acclaimed physical examination scale systems. Results: In the first group, significantly higher concentrations of Cr (p = 0.028) and Co (p = 0.002) were demonstrated compared to the group of femoral neck arthroplasty. The mean concentrations of Cr and Co, 10.45 and 9.26 μg/l, respectively, were higher in patients operated bilaterally. In the ASR group, greater pain intensity in the operated hip and higher indicators of oxidative stress were found. Conclusions: Metal-on-metal articulation of the hip significantly increases the concentration of Cr and Co in blood, induces oxidative stress and modifies function of the antioxidant system and generates greater pain in the operated hip. Over a 46-month period, the objectives of the National Cancer Control Program (NCCP, pol. Narodowy Program Zwalczania Chorób Nowotworowych), coordinated by the Ministry of Health, were pursued by conducting genetic diagnostics on individuals at high risk of developing cancer. A total of 1097 individuals were enrolled in the study, leading to the identification of 128 cases of germline mutations. The implementation of the NCCP led to the identification of genetic mutations in 4.43% of the patients qualified for BRCA1 and BRCA2 screening tests, in 18.18% of those qualified for a comprehensive next-generation sequencing (NGS) panel in cases of breast and ovarian cancer, and in 17.36% of cases of colorectal and endometrial cancer. The research conducted allowed us to establish individualized preventive and therapeutic approaches for mutation carriers. However, the results prove that liberalizing the inclusion criteria for high-throughput diagnostics and the use of broad gene panels could significantly increase the percentage of detected carriers. This publication serves as a summary and discussion of the results obtained from the implementation of the NCCP as well as of the role of genetic consulting in personalized medicine. In this article we argue that what is called today a ‘democratic backsliding’ or de-consolidation should be analysed, at least in some cases, as a liberal-constitutional backsliding for which the pandemic of Covid-19 adds a new impetus and creates the situation where violation of constitutionality of law might become a norm. In our theoretical considerations, we propose to examine this problem from two interconnected perspectives: the tension between the liberal and the democratic components of liberal democracy, often overlooked by the dominant democratic theory, and constitutionalism as the major safeguard of individual rights and liberties that limits democratic sovereignty, or the will of the people expressed by democratic representation. To better understand the nature of the current crisis of liberal-constitutional backsliding, we refer to Carl Schmitt’s concept of ‘the administrative state’ where the dominant legal act is an administrative decree which does not require constitutional legitimacy or even the guarantee that it expresses the will of the majority. Our empirical considerations focus on the case of the liberal-constitutional backsliding in Poland exacerbated by the pandemic, which provides a good illustration of how the tensions within the liberal-democratic model itself can be used to justify democratic sovereignty as the only source of political legitimacy. CO2 emission limits introduced by the European Union are encouraging works on new-generation materials with reduced clinker content. Currently, fumed silica from hard coal combustion is used in cement and concrete technology in Europe and Poland. Its wide application depends mainly on its chemical and phase composition, especially the reactivity of pozzolanic acids and its high fineness similar to cement Many authors studied the influence of fly ashes from hard coal combustion, in accordance with PN-EN 450-1 and 450-2, on the properties of concrete, including the course of the carbonation process. There are no studies in the literature involving ashes from sewage sludge. The objective of the research is to assess the course of carbonation of concrete produced on the basis of fly ash from the thermal transformation of sewage sludge over time and to describe this phenomenon in a mathematical form. An additional objective was to analyze the physicochemical composition of sludge ash in accordance with the requirements of EN 450-1, ASTM-C618-03. In addition, this study also demonstrated the possibility of producing fly ash-modified standard concrete through the thermal treatment of sewage sludge. The average compressive strengths of Krakow gray concrete after curing for 28, 56, 90, and 365 days were 50.1 MPa, 50.6 MPa, 50.8 MPa, and 61.9 MPa, respectively. On the one hand, the additives introduced in the concrete mixture accelerate the carbonation process by shifting the carbonation front deep into the concrete and, on the other hand, create a denser microstructure In all cases, the largest increase in carbonation depth was observed up to the 56th day of the study, while the smallest increase was observed between 90 and 180 days. The diffusivity decreases and the rate of carbonation is reduced. The determined regression coefficients of hyperbolic models indicate the proper adjustment of the adopted hyperbolic model to the results of laboratory tests under accelerated carbonation conditions (R = 0.85–0.99), regardless of the content of fly ash from sewage sludge in ordinary concrete samples. Nests of Lindenius pygmaeus armatus were examined in northern Poland in Kowalewo Pomorskie and Sierakowo. Adults were encountered from late May to late July. The nests were built in sandy areas and wasteland. Seven nests were observed, of which two were dug up and their structure was examined. The channel was approximately 2.5 mm in diameter and 8–10 cm in the length. The material removed during digging was placed near the nest entrance. The main burrow led to 3–5 cells. The cocoons were approximately 5–7 mm long and 2.5–3.5 mm wide. Females of L. p. armatus provided their nest cells with chalcid wasps averaging 14 prey items per cell. Parasitoids Myrmosa atra and kleptoparasites Senotainia conica were observed entering the burrows. Both females and males of L. p. armatus were detected on the flowers of Achillea millefolium, Peucedanum oreoselinum, Daucus carota, and Tanacetum vulgare. This paper presents the main directions and range of man-made changes to the vascular flora and their effects at the vegetation level. The native flora of Poland, located in the temperate zone of Central Europe, comprises approximately 2639 species. The effect of human pressure, which began in the Neolithic and has intensified in the last 200 years, has caused changes in the native flora and has included an inflow of 975 alien species, 560 of which have become permanently established. Currently, at least 704 native species are recognized as endangered, and only 623 are recognized as being able to occupy habitats that were created or strongly transformed by humans. Native species (apophytes) and aliens (anthropophytes) have co-created completely new plant communities in these habitats. Among the alien plants, neophytes (399 species) outnumber archaeophytes (161 species). Additionally, many neophytes (123 species) can penetrate seminatural and natural communities. Research has shown that the proportions of apophytes, alien plants, and declining species can be used to clearly differentiate plant communities and be used as an indicator of anthropogenic changes. A comparison of the man-made changes in Polish flora and vegetation in other countries showed that the changes in Poland are part of the global process of environmental degradation and are aggravated by the country's economic development. The dynamic changes in tertiary education that were observed in Poland for the last 20 years transformed the Polish educational market and led to the immense expansion of educational institutions. The rapid increase in the number of students that continued until 2006 is however over and Polish universities have begun to compete for their clients. Increased competition along with the pessimistic forecasts for Poland with regard to demographic changes result in the growing demand for the knowledge on determinants of student educational choices and satisfaction. Although the amount of studies in this field is growing, Poland is still substantially underrepresented in the current research. The purpose of this article was to examine the underlying factors behind the choices that Polish students make while pursuing their tertiary education. The research method that combines focus groups' discussions and a survey study among 1,420 business major students helped us to identify the factors behind three phases of the decision making process: pursuing higher education; information search along with final choice of a university; and satisfaction from chosen studies. Our research implies that decision making with regard to tertiary education is multifaceted and longitudinal as it combines a different set of factors in each stage of the decision making process. This paper presents the main results of a recent survey of private higher education institutions from twelve selected European countries (Austria, Germany, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Poland, Estonia, Bulgaria, Romania, Turkey, Ukraine, Russia) [in the framework of the UNESCO-CEPES project on "Private Higher Education in Europe and Quality Assurance and Accreditation from the Perspectives of the Bologna process Objectives," designed and implemented in collaboration with "Leon Kozminski Academy of Entrepreneurship and Management (LKAEM) and the World Bank"]. After a brief review of the current incidence of private education in the selected European countries, the authors give a description of the survey. Then the main findings are structured according to the nine goals of the Bologna Process and their corresponding level of implementation in private higher education institutions, and also to provide comparisons with public higher education institutions. The paper concludes with a discussion of the results and with some general remarks about the role of private higher education institutions in building the EHEA. Reinforced masonry constructions and their elements must meet strength and stability requirements. These conditions determine wall structure safety during construction and operation. Safety depends on diagnostically aimed tests that check the objects' quality or locate damages to structural elements that arise during operation. This article is focused on the experimental modal analysis research of reinforcement ceramic masonry elements. The aim of the research was to check whether it is possible to observe the damage in reinforced masonry structures and the accompanying vibration of signal transition functions by conducting pilot studies and using different types of reinforcements. The experiment was conducted on three samples of various types of reinforced brick walls. During the vibration tests, the segments were subjected to various loads, and it was observed how the increasing cracks and damage changed the courses of the measured functions of the vibration process, reflecting the damage to the segments. This made it possible to assess the variability of the vibration characteristics of the tested reinforced wall elements and the usefulness of the applied test method. The aim of the study was to check the assessed effectiveness by testing the degradation of the reinforced wall elements. The research confirmed the usefulness of the SISO methodology in identifying damages, which has been implemented in selected precast factories in Poland. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Mutualistic interactions are by definition beneficial for each contributing partner. However, it is insufficiently understood how mutualistic interactions influence partners throughout their lives. Here, we used animal species-explicit, microhabitat-structured integral projection models to quantify the effect of seed dispersal by 20 animal species on the full life cycle of the tree Frangula alnus in Białowieża Forest, Eastern Poland. Our analysis showed that animal seed dispersal increased population growth by 2.5%. The effectiveness of animals as seed dispersers was strongly related to the interaction frequency but not the quality of seed dispersal. Consequently, the projected population decline due to simulated species extinction was driven by the loss of common rather than rare mutualist species. Our results support the notion that frequently interacting mutualists contribute most to the persistence of the populations of their partners, underscoring the role of common species for ecosystem functioning and nature conservation. A decade-long study into seed dispersal of glossy buckthorn trees by animals in an old-growth Polish forest finds that tree population growth is more positively influenced by a small subset of common generalists rather than specialist frugivores. The Bydgoszcz region (Poland) is located in an area with a very high demand for supplementary irrigation during the vegetation period of plants. The projected global warming will bring a rise in the water needs of crops, and thus a further increase in irrigation needs. The goal of the study was an attempt to estimate the water needs of sweet cherry trees in 2021–2050 (forecast period) in the region of Bydgoszcz. The years 1981–2010 were adopted as the reference period. The water needs of sweet cherry trees were calculated on the basis of air temperature using the Treder method, in which water needs are equated with the potential evapotranspiration of a given fruit tree species. It was found that in the growing season of the forecast period, the relative diversity of sweet cherries' water needs was relatively small (7%). The highest variability of monthly water needs was in April, May, and June. The seasonal water needs amounted to 573 mm, with very high monthly water needs noted in July (139 mm) and August (134 mm). A significant trend of the time variability of water needs was calculated only in August. During this month, it is predicted that the water needs will rise by 5 mm in each subsequent decade. Objective: This study aimed to investigate the role of knowledge management orientation (KMO) in small and medium-sized companies (SMEs) as a driver of competitive position, with customer orientation and participation in international networks as mediating variables. Research Design & Methods: The analysis involved structural equation modelling on a dataset of 281 SMEs from south-eastern Poland specializing in the aviation industry. Findings: The study found that KMO was the strongest positive determinant of the competitive position in the model, with more than half of the effect contributed by indirect regression paths involving mediator variables. Customer orientation enhanced competitive position only through direct effects, while international network involvement contributed to competitive advantage indirectly through the network benefits variable. Interestingly, the only meaningful difference between small and medium firms was found in the regression link between network benefits and competitive position, suggesting that larger firms are better equipped to translate benefits from cooperating with international supply chain partners into advantages against business rivals. Implications & Recommendations: To practitioners, the study demonstrates how the interplay between knowledge management and cooperation with the supply chain can provide substantive business advantages. Contribution & Value Added: The study adds to the existing theory by underscoring the importance of KMO to SMEs and explaining its role as an antecedent of beneficial cooperation within international networks of business partners. Simple Summary: The European beaver is the biggest rodent in Eurasia and its diet is closely related to the season of the year. The gastrointestinal tract adapts its structure and physiology to ensure resistance to mechanical factors and proper digestion. Among mammals, the esophagus structure is highly variable. We aimed to perform morphological analysis of the esophagus in the European beaver, with a special attention to differences in the thickness of the epithelium in organs collected in spring, summer, and winter. Our results reveal that the mucosa is lined with stratified squamous keratinized epithelium with a structure similar to that of the skin epidermis. The process of epithelial keratinization occurs in both adult and fetal animals, suggesting that it is genetically programmed. The keratinized layer is much thicker in esophagi collected in winter than in spring and summer, while the living cell layer thickness remains unchanged regardless of the season. Moreover, immunohistochemical staining shows increased proliferation of epithelial cells in winter compared to that in spring and summer. Ultrastructural studies reveal the presence of multiple lamellar and non-lamellar bodies in granular cells, whose morphology and location gradually change while reaching the upper epithelial layers. The morphology of the esophagus in the European beaver displays features adapted to seasonal changes in diet. Future studies could employ biochemical characterization of keratinization process in the epithelium and composition of keratinized layer. The European beaver is a herbivorous rodent whose diet changes seasonally, and in winter consists of large quantities of woody plants. It is distinguished among other mammals by a unique organization of the stomach that comprises the cardiogastric gland and by the unusual process of mucus formation in the gastric mucosa. The aim of study was to (i) characterize the structure of the beaver esophagus with particular attention to the mucosal epithelium; (ii) compare the histological structure of the esophagi collected in spring, summer, and winter; (iii) provide preliminary data on the structure of the esophagus in beaver fetuses. The study was conducted on esophagi of 18 adult beavers captured in Poland in April, August, and December, and on 3 fetal organs. The results obtained in adults show that the mucosa is lined with thick stratified squamous keratinized epithelium with a structure similar to that of the skin epidermis. Ultrastructural studies reveal the presence of multiple lamellar and non-lamellar bodies in granular cells, whose morphology and location gradually change while reaching the upper epithelial layers. The muscularis mucosa comprises a layer of longitudinally oriented bundles of smooth muscle cells. Both mucosa and submucosa do not comprise any glands. The thick muscularis externa consists mainly of internal circular and external longitudinal layers of striated muscle fibers. The keratinized layer of mucosa epithelium was 2-3-fold thicker in esophagi collected in winter than in those collected in spring and summer, while the epithelial cell layer thickness remained unchanged regardless of the season. Immunolabeling for proliferating cell nuclear antigen shows a higher index of epithelium proliferation in esophagi collected in winter than in spring and summer. No seasonal differences were noted in other layers of the esophagus. Purpose: The research aimed to identify what causes some highly skilled migrants from Ukraine to work according to their qualifications and others work below their qualifications. Design/methodology/approach: This article discusses the results of a survey conducted among 248 highly skilled economic migrants from Ukraine working in Poland. Two groups were analysed: working according to their qualifications and working below their qualifications. The study was carried out between December 2021 and March 2022. The CATI method has been used. Findings: There is a statistically significant relationship between the length of work experience of respondents in Ukraine and whether or not they are working according to their qualifications or below their qualifications. There is a statistically significant relationship between working in accordance with or not in accordance with qualifications and the assessment of whether it is difficult for a Ukrainian to get a job in Poland in accordance with his/her qualification. Research limitations/implications: The limitation of the conducted research is that it is conducted exclusively from the perspective of the migrant and does not take into account external factors such as the situation in the labour market of the host country, legal conditions, employers' attitudes towards employing foreigners in positions requiring higher education. This should be taken into account in future research. Practical implications: The research also has implications for the management of organisations. They show that there are people among the Ukrainian workforce whose potential is not being used. Their talents could be utilised within the organisation. Further research should look at companies and examine how the process of hiring foreign workers works and determine when a company decides to hire a highly qualified Ukrainian according to his/her background. Social implications: Poland has become a country of immigration. Economic migrants from Ukraine were joined by refugees from that country after 24.02.2022. The proper use of migrants' qualifications is therefore important from the point of view of the economy, but also of the host society. Originality/value: It shows the possibility of using highly qualified migrants from Ukraine in the organisation. The author takes up the problem of foreign minors living in Poland, which was first noticed in this country at the beginning of the 1990s. In the Polish literature on the subject, the problem of migration and minors is most often discussed in the context of labour migration of Poles and problems related to the absence of parents in Poland. The problem of foreign minors living in Poland fits into a wider European context. The objective of this article is to understand the legal and demographic aspects of foreign minors as well as the dilemmas and challenges faced by Polish schools in the area of education. To pursue this cognitive objective, the author conducted an analysis of the relevant literature. In order to investigate the topic, two research questions were formulated: a) What is the Polish migration policy towards foreign minors from the legal perspective? b) What is the situation of foreign minors in Polish schools, including legal norms and problems connected with their education and upbringing? In conclusion, it should be stated that Poland lacks a broad strategy and holistic policy from the government and non-governmental institutions on the integration of foreigners. Nevertheless, Polish law and institutional practices are aimed at safeguarding the interests of foreign minors and respecting children's rights, their subjectivity, and national and cultural identity. The upbringing of minor foreigners living in Poland poses new challenges for schools and teachers, who should acquire new competences in intercultural education and educational practices aimed at students from other cultures. It should also be noted that there are no specialised centres capable of providing adequate care and assistance to such children, who are often victims of violence, crime and exploitation. Educational authorities and schools tend to incline towards the paradigm of inclusion and acknowl - edging the 'Other' when it comes to children from other cultures, rather than discrimination and opposition to the process of multiculturalism. Background: Knowledge about diabetes mellitus (DM)-related complications, the direct and indirect costs incurred by patients with DM is still insufficient in Poland. Economedica DM-PL (Economedica) survey was a cross--sectional observational study that aimed to assess these issues. Material and methods: The survey was carried out in 2016 on a representative sample of 2032 diabetic patients recruited by 195 general practitioners (GP) and 48 diabetologists (D) randomly selected from the national registry of physicians. Each GP and D recruited 8 to 10 patients with DM according to the specified protocol. The study included 1938 medical questionnaires (completed by the GPs and Ds), 1938 questionnaires about costs (completed by the patients) and 1532 treatment adherence questionnaires. Results: The Economedica survey provided new insights into DM epidemiological and cost data. 70% of patients with type-1 DM were diagnosed with the disease before the age of 40. For 76% patients with type-2 DM, it was diagnosed after the age of 50. The average monthly out-of-pocket medical costs for DM patients in 2016 reached 66.2 EUR, while their non-medical costs were 36.8 EUR. Trees have a large impact on the topsoil chemistry and the strength and direction of this impact depend on the identity of the tree species. Tree species with nutrient-poor litter have the potential to degrade soil fertility, which is characterized by high acidity, low availability of essential nutrients for plant growth, and high levels of available Al and Fe. In contrast, species with more easily decomposing, nutrient-rich litter can ameliorate the soil quality. In this study, we are investigating the effects of tree species identity on topsoil chemistry on a small spatial scale. Our study site, situated in Białowieża Forest in Poland, replicates mature monocultures and two-species mixtures, using a pool of four tree species. Soil was sampled at a metre distance to the base of a tree and in the centre along a transect between two trees. We found that the total C concentration, plant available P and base cation concentration, and C/N ratio were all larger close to the tree. The pH was unaffected by the distance. We identified clear species identity effects on this distance effect. In particular, we found that the pH and base cations were affected more negatively by the proximity to a tree nearby nutrient-poor trees in comparison with nutrient-rich trees. However, no non-additive diversity effects in mixtures could be distinguished. Our results highlight the ameliorating effects of admixing nutrient-rich species with nutrient-poor species and the importance of tree species choice in regard to the topsoil chemical composition on a small within-stand scale. The observed climate change determines the silvicultural and productive perspectives of the different species. The use of stand growth simulators, which are important tools for predicting future tree growth, requires verified and consistent data, such as length of forest growing season (FGS). The aim of this study is to determine the current and future FGS on the territory of Poland, which has a highly variable transition climate between maritime and continental types. The analysis is based on the WorldClim grid dataset corrected with the constructed model based on the FGS derived from 245 meteorological stations covering the whole territory of the country. In addition, predictions of changes in FGS depending on different climate scenarios were considered. The results show that the inclusion of geographical location components, i.e., longitude, latitude and especially altitude, is important for the correction of FGS calculated on the basis of raster datasets such as WorldClim. The prediction of climatic changes shows a significant increase in FGS duration in Poland, ranging from 18 to 52 days, mainly affecting the mountainous regions with the shortest actual FGS. Prediction of considerable wind power is a signifi cant factor in modern power systems' robust and resilient operation. As a result, many studies addressed up-to-day-ahead wind power forecasting. Taking into account the abilities of machine learning (ML) Models and their combinations, in this paper, the Authors would like to present the framework for 60-hour wind power forecasting in Poland. Possession of longer than one-day ahead of accurate wind power forecasts gives an ability to the transmission system operator (TSO) and distribution system operator (DSO) the to improve the control of grid traffi c and assimilate more effi ciently the renewable energy sources (RES) generated power. The presented method uses the geographical coordinates of wind farms in the area of interest with their wind-power curves. It combines it with weather parameters such as wind speed and direction, wind gust, air temperature, and pressure for improved accuracy. The novelty of the proposed method is that model can adapt autonomously according to achieved past accuracy. A back-score accuracy has been tracked based on past predictions and measured wind power generation. Furthermore, the model combines different ML models that can be adapted or retrained if prediction performance drops below an acceptable level. In this paper, we would like to present a method and performance analysis of the adaptive ensemble-model method, whose accuracy has been calculated compared with actual data measured in the National Power System of Poland. Furthermore, the paper's novelty is that the proposed method/framework can use only an approximate model of large wind generation at the beginning, and the model can be fi ne-tuned in the proposed method's operation as a function of back-accuracy measurement triggering ensemble-model adaptation. Despite the historians' growing interest in material culture, collections of sacred objects have largely been overlooked by scholars of religious history and art history alike. While the former tend to reduce church artifacts to their religious function, the latter focus mostly on individual items of singular artistic import. This essay examines a collection of displaced relics from the perspective of their shifting meanings and multiple uses as ritual objects, offerings, gifts, and commodities. Charting the parallel displacements of objects and people during the Polish-Ottoman wars of 1672–1699, I argue that the mutability of the relics shaped the refugees' attempts to deal with the conflicting social obligations and economic pressures of exile. Drawing on the church inventories and trial records of the Armenian communities in Poland-Lithuania, this essay offers a wider analytical framework with which to approach the problems of migration, displacement, and collective possessions in the early modern world. The aim of this study was to present factors shaping biodiesel production in Poland influenced by the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) of the European Union (EU). The performance of Polish biodiesel producers was analyzed. A regression model was built to identify the factors that impacted biodiesel production in Poland. The Farm Accountancy Data Network (FADN) was the main source of information about Polish biodiesel farmers. The FADN is the most comprehensive and detailed source of economic and agricultural data in Poland. Changes in the number of biodiesel producers in the Polish market were analyzed with the use of indicators. In the last stage of the study, the impact of selected variables on the performance of rapeseed farms was determined in a regression analysis. The second source of information was Eurostat data, which provided information about pure biodiesel production in the European Union (EU) countries from 2004 to 2019. The biggest producers of pure biodiesel in the European Union are Germany, France, Spain, and Italy. Poland is also an important producer of biodiesel in the European Union (EU). Both descriptive statistics and statistical analyses are presented. First, we used descriptive statistics to present changes in pure biodiesel production in the European Union. Second, we used statistical analyses to present factors shaping the economic performance of biodiesel producers in Poland. The study demonstrated that the number of rapeseed producers in Poland has increased and that farm performance has improved during the period analyzed. Rapeseed farms have increased their land area and the value of fixed and current assets. The land area under rapeseed cultivation has increased after Poland joined the EU, which suggests a positive response to a growing demand for biofuels. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This experiment analyzed the effect of genetic determinants, the production technology, and the location on the nitrate and nitrites content in potato tubers directly after harvest. Nitrates and nitrites are anti-nutritional compounds, which limit or prevent the use of nutrients from consumed products and have a detrimental effect on the human body. The study was conducted on seven tetraploid potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) clones ('13-VIII-10', '13-VIII-27', '13-VIII-45', '13-VIII-49', '13-VIII-50', '13-VIII-60', 'TG-97–403'), and three cultivars ('Jelly', 'Satina', and 'Tajfun') at four locations in Poland under either an integrated (Młochów, Boguchwała) or organic (Radzików, Chwałowice) production system. The results showed that the production system, location, and year significantly affected the nitrate and nitrites content in potatoes. Potato tubers originating from organic farming exhibited a lower content of the tested compounds (NO3−—124.1 mg kg−1 FW; NO2−—2.4 mg kg−1 FW) than that in the tubers obtained from an integrated production system (NO3−—203.7 mg kg−1 FW, NO2−—4.0 mg kg−1 FW). Under conditions of moderate stress as usual in the case of organic farming, the production of nitrates and nitrites are significantly lower than in the integrated production system. In our research potatoes from an integrated production system were characterised by a nitrate content at the limit of the established standard, i.e., 200 mg kg−1 FW. Tubers from the locality Chwałowice were characterised by the lowest nitrates and nitrites content, due to adequate environmental conditions, in addition to the best agricultural practice. The nitrates content depended to a greater extent on the environmental conditions than the potato on the genetic conditions. A higher content of nitrates and nitrites was found in the following potato clone 13-VIII-10 in Boguchwała from an integrated production system (NO3−—269.2 mg kg−1 F; NO2−—6.0 mg kg−1 FW), and in the 'Tajfun' cultivar (235.8; 5.8 mg kg−1 FW, respectively). Most of the academic literature indicates that high administrative status positively influences the development of a city, while the loss of such status leads to marginalisation. Most of these studies, however, investigated national capitals, and relatively little research has analysed the effect of a change in status at lower levels of government. Poland is an obvious subject for such research, due to the recent extensive reforms of its system of territorial government. This article presents the recent dynamics of socio-economic development in Polish cities and their relation to whether a city maintained or lost its status as a regional capital. These results enable us to identify correlations between the dynamics of socio-economic development and the status of a city. The nature of these correlations is more ambiguous than the results presented in previous studies. This study presents the results of a 5-year monitoring program of ice cover, water temperature, and local meteorological conditions carried out in three reference lakes in the periglacial zone of the Polish Tatra Mountains. On the basis of this information, the relationships between the weighted mean water temperature of each of these lakes and the air temperature, wind speed, precipitation, and ice–snow cover in the summer, spring, and autumn seasons, as well as year-round, were described, and the roles of the morphometry of lakes and the topography of their catchments were determined. It was found that the sensitivity of the lakes to climate warming increased with a decrease in their area/depth and shade, and with an increase in altitude and the share of wind-blown snow in the formation of the ice–snow cover. An increase in the mean annual air temperature does not necessarily translate into the warming of lakes, but, paradoxically, may result in their cooling. The current climate may not be best reflected by the most sensitive lakes, but rather by the largest ones located in the subalpine zone. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
