The article presents a discussion of intelligence gathering by nation-states during wartime, focusing on U.S. 20th-century history. The Philippine American War in the early 20th century is discussed, and compared to the establishment of the Guantanamo Bay Detention Camp. An overview of historic advances in surveillance technology and is presented. The evolution of government policies and public opinion regarding state secrets and national security are analyzed from a sociological perspective, and cases in which an excess of government surveillance has prompted a backlash from citizens are discussed.
