Objective. Evaluate the implementation and operation of protected residences for people with serious mental illness in Iquitos, based on the benefits and perceived improvement in their quality of life. Methods. Qualitative and cross-cutting study. Thirty-six in-depth interviews of residents, caregivers, neighbors, and health professionals were conducted. A sociodemographic and clinical file was completed for each resident, along with a file on managerial processes for each facility. Focus groups were conducted with managers and caregivers. Results. Residents' previous length of stay in a psychiatric hospital was 7 years and 3 months. Only 28 % had suffered a clinical relapse in the past year. Residents reported an improvement in their quality of life and greater satisfaction with their stay in the facility compared with their stay in the psychiatric hospital. The residences evaluated are located in areas accessible to social and community services, with adequate access to transportation. Periodic supervision of caregivers, infrastructure, and residence maintenance was performed. Conclusions. Caregivers, managers, residents, and neighbors have a positive view of residence operations. Background Neuropsichiatric diseases constitute the first cause of burden of disease in Peru. Objective The aim of this study was to describe 12 month mental health services utilization, of the 18 to 65 years old urban population in Peru. Method As part of the World Mental Health Survey Initiative (WMHSI), this research used a multistage, clustered-area probability sample of 3930 18-65 years old household residents in Lima, Arequipa, Huancayo, Iquitos and Tacna between July 2004 and December of 2005. The Instrument used was the Composite International Diagnostic Interview (CIDI) that produces DSM-IV/ICD-9 diagnoses by means of computerized algorithms. Results In the last 12 months, only one of every 5 people who had a mental disorder during this period received any treatment. The average number of treatment visits per year was only three. 9.7% of those with any mental disorder received appropriate treatment. People with low education had less access to minimally adequate treatment (OR=0.1, 95% CI=0.0, 0.5). The group with substance use disorders had lower access to treatment in the last 12 months (12.7%). Discussion and conclusion Peru presents a wide gap in mental health treatment. Objectives. To estimate the annual prevalence of eighteen mental disorders, their sociodemographic correlates and the frequency of use of mental health services by individuals aged 18 to 65 in five cities of Peru. Materials and methods. The World Mental Health Survey in Peru used the Composite International Diagnostic Interview, which provides diagnoses according to DSM-IV and ICD-10 criteria. It was performed with a multistage probabilistic sample in Lima, Arequipa, Huancayo, Iquitos and Chiclayo between July 2004 and December 2005. Results. The prevalence of mental disorders in the last twelve months was 13.5%, the most frequent being anxiety (7.9%), mood (3.5%), impulse control (3.5%) and substance misuse (1.7%). The widowed, separated and divorced showed a greater risk of disorders in the last year than those who were married or partners living together. Only 32.8% of those who had severe mental health disorders in the last twelve months received any kind of treatment. Among those with moderate or mild disorders, 18.1% and 15.4% received treatment, respectively. Conclusions. More than 13 out of 100 Peruvians reported having a mental health disorder in the last year. The magnitude of mental health disorders and the gap in those receiving care highlights the urgent need to direct care and resources towards the detection and timely treatment of mental diseases in Peru. Objective: To evaluate the characteristics of Peruvian research studies on mental disorders (MD) published in SciELO-Peru during 2006-2011. Methods: A bibliometric study was conducted that included scientific papers on MD published in medical and psychological indexed journals in SciELO during 2006-2011. Articles with at least one Peruvian author whose main or secondary objectives were any MD were included. Main variables that were analyzed included kind of MD studied, author's affiliation, references and financing sources. Results: A total of 686 papers were identified in six journals, in 51 (7.4%) of these papers a MD was the main objective. Depression, substance abuse and sleeping disorders were the main topics covered. Major financing institutions were Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia and Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos. Objective. To determine the prevalence of Burnout Syndrome (BS) in dental students. Material and methods. The study was observational, descriptive and transversal. The sample consisted of 140 students of Periodontology I enrolled in the fourth cycle of the Faculty of Dentistry at the University of San Martin de Porres, during the second semester of 2011. The BS was measured using the Maslach Burnout Inventory - Student Survey (MBI-SS) W Schaufeli et al. (2002). Descriptive analysis was performed for each variable using frequency distribution tables, to evaluate the relationship between BS and associated factors were used Chi-square test. Results. We found that 45, 0% had a high level of emotional exhaustion, 41,4% a high level of cynicism and 45,7% had a low level of academic efficiency. 30, 7% of the sample showed severe BS degree, and 23,6% in moderate degree. It was found that the prevalence of BS was significantly higher in men (P:0.044), and lower in the group who lives alone (P:0.036). No relationship was found between the BS and marital status (P:0.506), to work beside studying (P:0.722), to practice any religion (P:0.912) or sport (P:0.264), or present physiological discomfort during the study (P:0.229). Regarding physiological discomfort reported by the students during their time of study, found that 114 (81,4%) had musculoskeletal symptoms, 118 (84,3%) of psychosomatic type, 64 (45,7%) gastrointestinal and 5 (3,6%) cardiovascular. Conclusions. 30, 7% of the sample showed severe degree of BS, and 23,6% in moderate degree.
