Measurement of serum immunoglobulin G (IgG) is used for the assessment of passive transfer of immunity in neonatal crias, with an IgG concentration <10 g/l being suggestive of failure of passive transfer (FPT). The purpose of the current study was to determine whether 3 commercially available immunologic assays yielded comparable results for IgG in alpacas. Serum samples from 91 alpacas were used and were stored frozen until batch analysis on the same day with the 3 assays. Immunoglobulin G was measured by radial immunodiffusion (RID) and 2 immunoturbidimetric (IT) assays (IT1, configured for automated chemistry analyzers; IT2, a point-of-care test). Median IgG concentrations were significantly different between the 3 assays, with the RID (median: 15 g/l) and IT1 (median: 16 g/l) assays, which used the same standard, yielding significantly higher IgG values than IT2 (median: 11 g/l). Results indicated a diagnostic discordance in 1–17% of samples at an IgG threshold of 10 g/l. Protein electrophoresis revealed that the RID and IT1 standard contained mostly albumin (>60%), whereas the IT2 standard consisted of beta and gamma globulins. The discrepant results between assays IT1 and IT2 were eliminated when the same standard was used (IT1: median 11 g/l; IT2: 10 g/l; n = 19 and 17, respectively). The IT1 assay had the highest precision, while the RID assay had the lowest. The results indicate that camelid IgG measurement is highly dependent on the assay standard and is not directly comparable between assays, potentially resulting in underdiagnosis of FPT in some crias. Objective: To determine the frequency of aspergilloma in patients with history of cured pulmonary tuberculosis, hemoptysis, abnormal chest X-ray films, and negative sputum smears for acid-fast bacilli. Materials and methods: 28 patients were enrolled between December 2002 and September 2004 in Hipolito Unanue National Hospital in Lima and Belen Hospital in Trujillo. Patients from Belen Hospital had three serial and consecutive sputum samples taken, while those patients from Hipolito Unanue Hospital who underwent thoracic surgery had a portion of the surgical specimen collected. Both biological samples were cultured in Sabouraud dextrose agar -- 0,05% chloramphenicol, and they were incubated at room temperature and at 37° C for 15 days. All patients had a 5-mL blood sample taken in order to perform immunodifusion tests for Aspergillus sp. Results: The frequency of aspergilloma was 43%) (12/28). Aspergillus fumigatus was identified in cultures in five cases, Aspergillus sp. was identified in two cases, A. niger in one, A. flavus in one, and in two cases reported as positive for serological tests the fungus could not be isolated. In the two patients in whom A. niger was identified, no presence of antibodies against Aspergillus sp. was detected. In Belen Hospital the frequency of aspergilloma was 39% (7/18), and in Hipolito Unanue Hospital it was 50% (5/10). Conclusions: Aspergilloma frequency in 28 patients studied in both hospitals was 43%, and the main etiological agent was A. fumigatus. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In order to asses the effect of acute exposure to natural high altitude on some immunological mechanisms of mice, the primary response to SRBC was studied by the direct Hemolytic Plaque and Hemagglutination Tests. A control group was studied in Lima, Peru, 150 m. At high altitude (Ticlio, Peru, 4843 m), we found fewer spleen plaque-forming cells (PFC) and the maximal peak of PFC was delayed 1 day, as compared with the response at a lower altitude. Conversely, there was a higher serum concentration of 2-ME sensitive and resistant hemagglutinin antibodies at high altitude and the 19-S (2-ME sensitive) response was predominant during the first days at high altitude while the 7-S response was retarded. These results are interpreted as a stimulating effect of hypoxia on the 19-S antibody production rather than a cellular proliferation as far as the SRBC system is concerned. Serum concentrations of Igs G, M, A and the fraction C'3 of the Complement (B1C/B1A globulin) were determined in normal natives from three cities at different altitude levels: Morococha-Ticlio, 4680 m; La Oroya, 3700 m; and Tarma, 3051 m by the Radial Immunodiffusion Test. The serum concentration of C'3 was correlated with the total hemolytic activity of Complement (C'H50 method) in a group of natives from Morococha. The control group was of normal natives from Lima. No significant differences were found between resum concentration of Igs G, M and A in both groups, but there was a tendency for higher values of IgA at higher altitudes, and most sera in the high altitude group were above the normal IgG values for adults. The resum concentration of C'3 and the hemolytic activity of Complement were wound to be diminished in the high altitude group. These results are interpreted as an inhibitory effect of the altitude on the sequential activation and/or lysing capability rather than a reduction in the C'3 concentration.

Sera from 3,369 sheep and 1,394 goats in Peru were examined by agar-gel immunodiffusion for antibodies to ovine progressive pneumonia virus (OPPV). The point prevalence rates for antibodies to OPPV in sheep were 1.7% to 40.6% (mean, 19.02%) in the 7 flocks studied, whereas for goats, the point prevalence rates for antibodies that cross-reacted with OPPV in 12 herds were 0.0% to 45.1%. For sheep, a direct association between increasing age and increasing seroreactivity to OPPV was established, and there was evidence to indicate that lambs born to primiparous ewes and raised separated from all other sheep after they were weaned may have been less likely to become infected with OPPV than those lambs born to multiparous ewes and not separated from other sheep after they were weaned. For goats, antibodies to OPPV were detected in 7 of 12 herds studied, the highest infection rate being present within a herd in the Lima department (district).
