- Abstract
When Massachusetts' Bristol Community College (BCC) installed photovoltaic panels on the roofs of three campus buildings, the goal was to position the college as a regional leader in sustainability. The question was how to let the surrounding community know about its investment. The project took place largely out of public view, hidden high on the rooftops of buildings. As vice president of college communications, the author's job was to help get the word out about the project, so she turned to Facebook. To make social media work for one's college, one may consider these eight practical steps gleaned from other model colleges and the authors' own experiences. These include: (1) Support Your Strategic Plan; (2) Know Your Audience; Keep It Real; (3) Become a Follower; (4) Don't Assume You Know Everything; (5) Be Flexible; (6) Constant Nurturing; (7) Stay in the Trenches; and (8) Plan for the Unsavory.
