The article describes the development of a second generation of long terminal repeat-based real-time reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) in the Virology Laboratory at Necker Hospital in Paris, France using a reduced length minor groove binder probe. According to the authors, RT-PCR assay accurately quantified relevant HIV-1 subtypes and circulating recombinant forms with epidemic significance.
