This paper provides a sketch of the phonetics and phonology of Tomoip, an Austronesian language of New Britain, Papua New Guinea. Tomoip does not appear to be closely related to the other Austronesian languages of New Britain. Furthermore, it has been in contact with multiple non-Austronesian languages of the island. These two facts suggest that the language may have had a particularly interesting history. As the first publication dedicated to Tomoip, this paper is intended to serve as a starting point for further description, analysis, and classification of the language. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
