In this study Jurassic–Paleogene strata were investigated to understand the litho- and biostratigraphic framework and hydrocarbon source-rock potential of various stratal packages. Biostratigraphic controls were used to establish the chronostratigraphic framework of Jurassic–Paleogene strata in the area. The Lower Jurassic (Hettangian) clastics saw an unconformity during the Sinemurian–Pliensbachian, while the Lower Jurassic (Toarcian)–Middle Jurassic (Bajocian) clastic–carbonate mixed strata is also separated by a Bathonian unconformity from the Middle Jurassic (Callovian) to the Upper Jurassic (Tithonian) carbonate sequence. The Upper Jurassic Oxfordian strata are missing, while the Upper Jurassic (Kimmeridgian)–Lower Cretaceous (Valanginian) glauconitic sandstone and clays are the conformable sequences. The Lower Cretaceous (Hauterivian)–Upper Cretaceous (Turonian) clastics is a conformable sequence that is separated by a Coniacian–Santonian unconformity from the Upper Cretaceous (Campanian) pelagic carbonates. The Cretaceous–Tertiary boundary is marked by laterites, while the Paleocene (Thanetian) sequence is represented by a shale- and sandstone-dominated sequence. The Paleocene (Thanetian)–Early Eocene (Ilerdian) siliciclastic–carbonate mixed sequence marks the last episode of Tethyan sedimentation. Total organic content (TOC), organic petrography and Rock-Eval pyrolysis (REP) techniques were used to evaluate the hydrocarbon source-rock potential, kerogen type and level of maturity of the hydrocarbons. The majority of studied samples show the occurrence of type IV kerogen. However, the Middle Jurassic (Callovian)–Upper Jurassic (Tithonian) carbonate sequence of the Samana Suk Formation, the Kimmeridgian–Valanginian Chichali Formation, the Paleocene (Thanetian) sequence of the Hangu Formation and the Paleocene (Thanetian)–Early Eocene (Ilerdian) Patala Formation confirms the Type III kerogen, poor–fair source-rock quality, immature–mature, gas- and oil-prone indigenous hydrocarbon occurrence in the region. Geocellular modeling has become extremely important, linking all petroleum disciplines, and being widely used in simulation and production forecasting in complex basin studies. In this study, we focused on the Minwal–Joyamair Fields in the Upper Indus Basin (UIB), Pakistan, which contains Cambrian to Eocene reservoir formations. Changes in sedimentary environments and structural activities within the UIB have resulted in reservoir heterogeneity, which has adversely affected reservoir performance, and it is still not fully understood. Geocellular modeling was used in this study to better understand the structural framework of the Cambrian to Eocene formations in the UIB. The 2D seismic and well log data from the Minwal–Joyamair Fields are the primary data for building the geocellular model for the Eocene (Chorgali, Sakesar) and Paleocene (Lockhart) reservoirs. The developed structural model is then populated with petrophysical properties such as porosity. The upscaled porosity for the Eocene carbonate rock units ranges 1–3%. On the other hand, the Cambrian and Permian (Tobra & Khewra) clastic reservoirs bear porosity of 3–10%. The upscaled porosity can be utilized to predict the lateral and vertical distribution in these reservoirs. Furthermore, the evaluated upscaled correlation for Eocene reservoirs (80–90%), whereas for Permian (Tobra) and Cambrian (Khewra) reservoirs, it lies between 60 and 70 %. Apart from data availability, a complete geocellular model of the field was produced, encompassing the petrophysical and facies model. The outcrop investigations provide a better comprehension to interrelate facies-diagenesis and fracture networks for the evaluation of reservoir potential of the carbonate rocks. In this paper, we targeted Kahi-Section (Nizampur Basin) and Peeran Tangai-Section (Kalachitta Range) to analyze structural-kinematics, Discrete Fracture Network Modelling, microfacies identification and diagenesis to interpret their impact on reservoir potential of Lockhart Limestone (Paleocene). The structural grain within the study area mostly represents the typical east-west trending tight to overturned folds and north-dipping thrust faults that mimic the north-south Indo-Eurasian collision. However, a second phase of deformation related to east-west compressions also identified which rotated the axes of preexisting structures. Fracture analysis revealed that extensional fractures are oriented at high angle to bedding and are differentiated into three orthogonal sets trending northeast-southwest, northwest-southeast and east-west, whereas, the shear fractures formed two conjugate sets trending northeast-southwest. The Lockhart Limestone was deposited in the inner ramp setting and microfacies types are packstone, wackestone and wacke-packstone with seven sub-microfacies types. It has been identified that the Lockhart Limestone has the heterogeneous distribution of diagenetic and tectonic features throughout its extent. The observed diagenetic sequence is micritization, calcite cementation, dissolution, neomorphism, pyritization and compaction. The results highlight that open and partially filled fractures may provide an interconnected network to promote fluid mobility, leading to higher values of fracture permeability. The porosity values of the pore matrix were greater than fracture, resulting a significant impact on reservoir storage capacity. In contrast, a negative impact on reservoir potential has been shown by stylolites, veins and dissolution seams. A study was carried out in the Punjab Platform Basin located in Pakistan to evaluate the potential for hydrocarbon in the early Eocene and Paleocene sequences using petrophysical and geochemical techniques. The assessment of reservoir properties for the Sakesar Formation was carried out using wireline logs, which included measurements of water saturation, hydrocarbon saturation, and porosity. Moreover, 21 well-cutting samples were collected to assess the source rock potential of the Nammal (early Eocene), Dungan, and Ranikot (Paleocene) Formations. The results showed that the Nammal and Dungan Formation samples had low to moderate TOC content, ranging from 0.21 to 2.04 wt.% and 0.45 to 0.56 wt.%, respectively, while the Ranikot Formation samples had moderate to high TOC content, ranging from 0.48 to 1.63 wt.%. The formations under study were found to have a low potential for generating hydrocarbons, as indicated by their S2 values ranging from 0.21 to 2.04 mg HC/g rock. The primary type of kerogen present in these formations was type III and mixed type II/III kerogen, and several plots confirmed the poor generative potential of these formations. The analysis of the Sakesar Formation revealed that it had higher porosity levels at depths of approximately 4163–4197 ft4, with average porosity ranging between 8 and 14% and 68.28% SH and 31.71 Sw, indicating moderate to poor reservoir potential. This study reports on the detrital zircon provenance of the sandstones of Early Paleocene Ranikot Formation exposed in the Fort Munro section, Sulaiman fold-thrust belt, Pakistan. This marks the Cretaceous-Tertiary boundary sequence. The detrital zircon U-Pb ages reported are mainly clustered around ~460–1100 Ma, ~1600–1900 Ma and ~2300–2600 Ma. The age cluster ~460–1100 Ma is mainly matched well with the Tethyan Himalaya. However, the age clusters ~1600–1900 Ma and ~2300–2600 Ma matched fairly with the lesser Himalayas and Higher Himalayas. In addition, the sandstone petrography suggests the craton interior provenance. The two younger Cretaceous zircon ages may be derived from the Tethyan Himalaya volcanic rocks as supported by a high (>0.3) Th/U ratio. Furthermore, the absence of the ophiolitic component ~115–178 Ma suggests that the western ophiolite may be emplaced at the same time as Ranikot Formation deposited or later. Moreover, the absence of the Eurasian (zircon with ages <100 Ma) in the Ranikot Formation excludes the possibility of the early collision along the western margin, as reported in earlier studies. The Paleocene Lockhart Formation of Hazara Basin Lesser Himalayas of Pakistan was deposited in the package of shelf carbonates after the second disconformity transgression of Tethys. Three hundred thirteen (313) thin sections were prepared and stained for petrography from this section. The measured Chhangla Galli section is about 60 m thick of Lockhart Formation in Hazara Basin. Nine microfacies Mudstones, Rotaliidae Wackstones / Packstones, Miscelaneidae Wackstones / Packstones, Bioclastic Wackstone / Packstone, and Algal Wackstones / Packstones have been established and geochemically analyzed. The study shows that this formation deposited in shallow marine subtidal to the tidal marine environment of deposition environment of a carbonate platform (inner to mid ramp). The study includes biostratigraphy and micropaleontology of Paleocene carbonates of the Chhangla Gali section. Twenty-three (23) representative samples selected for major and trace elements (Ca, Mg, Sr, Mn, Fe and Na) analysis of the carbonates are reflected diagenetic and depositional environment. Pakistan is rich in coal resources, which amount to around 186 billion tons. The Paleocene Padhrar and Darra Adam Khel coalfields are located in the Central Salt Range Punjab Province and the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province, Pakistan, respectively. Padhrar coal has not been studied in detail and the Darra Adam Khel coalfields are newly‐discovered, so no research has been done, due to security considerations. In this study, an attempt has been made to study the geochemical and mineralogical characteristics of the Padhrar and Darra Adam Khel coals, in order to learn about the coal quality, element enrichment mechanism, sedimentary medium conditions and potentially valuable elements for coal utilization. The Padhrar and Darra Adam Khel coals are low to medium ash, low moisture content, high in volatiles and high total sulfur coal. The vitrinite reflectance in Darra Adam Khel coal is higher than in Padhrar coal, indicating either a greater burial depth or the effects of Himalayan tectonism. The vitrinite content is dominant in the Padhrar and Darra Adam Khel coals, followed by inertinite and liptinite, the major minerals including quartz, clay minerals, calcite and pyrite. The trace elements Ni, As, Be Zn, Ge, Mo, Ta, W, Co and Nb, Sn, Hf, Ta, Pb, Th, Cd, In, Be, V, Cr, Zr, Ag, Li, W and Co are concentrated in some of the Padhrar and Darra Adam Khel coal samples, respectively. The Padhrar coal shows positive Ce, Eu and Gd anomalies, with most of the Darra Adam Khel coal showing negative Ce, Eu and positive Gd anomalies with high LREE. The Al2O3/TiO2 values indicate that the sediment source of the Padhrar and Darra Adam Khel coals is mostly related to intermediate igneous rocks. The Sr/Ba, SiO2 + Al2O3, Fe2O3 + CaO + MgO/SiO2 + Al2O3 and high sulfur content in the Padhrar and Darra Adam Khel coals indicate epithermal and marine water influence with a tidal flat, coal‐forming environment and a deltaic coal‐forming environment, respectively. The methane trapped in the coal seams has emerged as an unconventional clean energy resource worldwide in this century. The proximate composition, ultimate content, cleat structure, porosity type, and pore structures are the debatable components for its trapping mechanism. Further, the brittle and ductile properties of minerals influence in the extraction of the methane from the coal seams. In this research, Coalbed methane prospect is demonstrated by analysing the Hangu Formation's coal seam of Trans-Indus Ranges, Pakistan. This case study is helpful to find the occurrence, trapping ability, and methane extraction capacity in its cleat structures and pores. A number of samples were tested from the different coal mines in terms of these debatable components. The results indicate that the rank of studied coal is bituminous to subbituminous in which the carbon ratio, volatile matter, and sulfur contents are increasing with depth towards the south. The transitional connected face and butt cleats are partially filled with minerals and the intergranular, dissolved, and tissue pore types are also identified in it. It can be helpful for the occurrence, migration, and trapping of methane. Furthermore, the higher surface areas and cumulative pore volumes enhance the capacity of gas adsorption with depth in the study area. Moreover, the increasing brittle minerals in the coal composition towards the south can be helpful for the fracking of coal seams for economical gas extraction. In the article, our research of the tectono-stratigraphic imprints of the Indian–Asian plates collision in the outcrops of Kurram and North Waziristan agencies in Pakistan with the help of detailed mapping and subsurface modeling, is presented. Three tectonic domains have been identified in the research based on the stratigraphic mismatch including the Nappe Domain, the allochthonous Indian Plate margin (Orakzai Ranges), and the autochthonous Indian Plate margin (Kohat Basin). In our work we focused on establishing the sequence of tectonic events based on the emplacement of the Nappe Domain eastward on top of the other two domains. The rocks from each domain have been measured and logged to determine their stratigraphic differences. Nappe Domain consists of Jurassic and Cretaceous sequence of sedimentary mélange rocks which are intensely folded and faulted and emplaced on the other two domains. These mélange rocks are emplaced on the Eocene shales of Kohat Basin in the southern part of the research area, while the same mélange rocks overlie the Paleocene carbonates in the Orakzai Ranges. This variable emplacement of the mélange sequence signifies that the research area represents the confluence of tectonically distinct blocks which were far apart during the post-Cretaceous and later, from Late Eocene to Miocene, these blocks were juxtaposed under influence of regional faulting. Our research also proves that the emplacement of the mélange rocks from the west started in post-Paleocene in the northern Orakzai Ranges while the southern Kohat Basin was receiving extensive Eocene deposition which was later overlained by the mélange rocks. Southern Indus Basin is one of the promising regions in Pakistan as a commercially producing oil and gas perspective. The current research presents the geochemical characterization of the Ranikot Formation shales from Southern Indus Basin based on total organic carbon (TOC), Rock-Eval (RE) pyrolysis, organic petrography, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), and x-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses. The average TOC of Ranikot shale is 4.6 wt. %, indicating very good hydrocarbon potential. Types III/IV kerogens were identified in the Ranikot shale. The maceral data also suggest that the Type of kerogen present in the Ranikot shale is dominantly Types II-III, with the minor occurrence of Type IV. The vitrinite reflectance, pyrolysis Tmax and methylphenanthrene indices values specify immature levels of the shales. The normal alkane data reflect that marine macrophyte, algae, and land plants were contributed to the organic matter of Ranikot shales. Dibenzothiophene/phenanthrene ratio (0.11), phytane/n-C18 ratio (0.53), pyrite, and glauconite elucidate that the depositional environment of the Ranikot shale is marine. The XRD analysis of the shale from the Ranikot Formation revealed that it is brittle shale and dominated by 39.5 to 50.9 wt. % quartz. The organic-rich shale intervals of Patala Formation of Paleocene age may be considered as potential shale gas play in the Upper Indus Basin of Pakistan. Until now, seismic and elastic properties of the Patala shales are not investigated in detail necessary to declare it as shale gas play and to differentiate shale gas pay zone from the non-pay zone. Data of eight wells in which Patala shales were encountered at various depth levels from 2000 to 4300 m were deeply investigated for shale gas characterization. This shale fulfills the basic criteria of organic-rich shale with TOC ~ 0.5–5.8%, vitrinite reflectance (level of maturity) is 0.6–1.7%, average thickness 48 m. The brittleness index (BI) of this organic-rich shale was computed by using effective mechanical properties and mineralogy to define brittle zones in the shale intervals preferable for generating the fracture network. BI data points demonstrate that a large number of values fall in the brittle zone, whereas fewer values fall in the ductile zone. However, a certain number of values fall in the brittle–ductile transition zone. The quantitative comparison between different elastic and seismic properties derived from the wireline logs guide for the delineation of the pay zone from the non-pay zone in the organic-rich shale intervals. In this study the hydrocarbon generation potential of the coal and coaly shale samples collected from coal mines in Attock-Cherat Range of Pakistan is optically and analytically evaluated. These samples, representing the Paleocene Hangu Formation, are analyzed across a range of thermal maturity stages to understand their hydrocarbon generation potential. The visual examination of maceral type and values of vitrinite reflectance have been considered while interpreting the geochemical results for the coal and associated sediments from the Paleocene Hangu Formation. The maceral group is dominated by vitrinite, mainly collodetrinite, followed by inertinite and liptinite, and suggests Type III kerogen for the samples. The geochemical parameters suggest that the samples are post mature, however, the vitrinite reflectance measurements show late mature conditions for a gas-prone generation. The overall petrographical and geochemical data suggest that the coal and coaly shale appear to occupy the gas window and fall in the dry gas zone. Based on the maceral types and Rock–Eval data, an anoxic to terrestrial environment is inferred for the deposition of the coal and associated sediments. The vitrinite reflectance, Rock–Eval pyrolysis, and the type and frequency of macerals show that the coal is of good quality, i.e., medium to high volatile bituminous and hard brown coal, mature, and is lying in the gas window. This investigation combines a number of datasets to provide an enhanced and improved tectono-geomorphological framework with which to identify new possible structural lineaments in northwest Pakistan. The dataset includes satellite images and geographic information system (GIS) methods. The present study was carried out using the USGS ASTER DEM (30 m), Landsat 8 (OLI/TIRS) and surface field geology of the study area. Different band combinations, directional filters and principle component analysis (PCA) methods were used to identify the major structural styles and tectonic geomorphological pattern. The panchromatic band (Band-8) was applied to the Landsat 8 satellite images in order to increase the spatial resolution from 30 m to 15 m which aided in the investigation and comparative analysis of tectonic geomorphology and structural styles. Drainage patterns of Zindapir Anticline (ZA), Sakhi Sarwar (SS), Sulaiman Foredeep (SF) and Kingri Fault (KF) areas were generated using Strahler order of streams. The results suggested a combination of the dendritic network with a minor component of trellis pattern for ZP and SF areas, hence proposing a combined structural and stratigraphic/lithological control, whereas the KF area indicated an element of a rectangular pattern suggesting a more structural influence in the western part in comparison to the eastern region. The presence of water gaps (WaGs) and active drainage network indicate lateral growth and propagation directions of the ZP and SS frontal anticlines following the Paleocene Epoch. The geomorphic evidence coupled with satellite data show that the SFTB is tectonically active along with the adjacent SF. The stream courses are deflected or guided due to active folds and tectonics in the area characterized by the distinct fluvial erosional pattern on the flanks/limbs of ZA. Evidence from the study suggests that compressional deformation, uplift and erosion played a significant role in the shaping of the structural and depositional architecture of the basin. It is proposed that the deformation in the SFTB during the late Paleogene is related to the Indian-Eurasian oblique collision, while the subsequent late Tertiary collision of Indian Plate with the Afghan Block (an accreted part of southern Eurasia) further ensued compressive deformation. The results from this study elucidate the possible models proposed for this compressional regime with prevailing wrenching by presenting new data. The sedimentary rocks of the Paleocene Hangu Formation in the Yadgaar Section of the Upper Indus Basin in northern Pakistan, have been the subject of an integrated field, petrographical, and sedimentological investigation. The goals of this study are to improve our understanding of the sedimentary environment, facies shifts, and the impact of tectonism on the genesis of the investigated sedimentary facies. A better understanding of the intricate relationships between the aforementioned factors will clarify whether the regional tectonic drive has partial control over or complete command of the sedimentation processes. The results of this study shows that the Hangu Formation consists of four facies: bauxite, sandstone, coal, and limestone. The bauxite deposits formed in a karst environment with severe chemical weathering in a humid to extremely humid climatic setting. Thin coal laminae indicate a peatland environment that formed within a humid tropical climate. Sub-arkose, arenite, and arkose sandstone facies mark deltaic (sub-humid), coastal–near shore (humid to hot-humid), and high-energy fluvial (arid to semi-arid) sedimentary environments, respectively. Finally, the occurrence of marly limestone points towards deposition on a shallow marine carbonate platform within a coastal-brackish environment. The facies shift of the sediments provides evidence for a gradual transition from continental to marine conditions within the study area, together with episodic transgressive and regressive cycles as well as changing climatic and geomorphological conditions. In consequence, all these changes are controlled and shaped by the effects of Paleo-Tethys tectonism during the Indo-Eurasian intra-oceanic subduction. This advancement through the current work helps in understanding tectonic-sedimentary mechanics, i.e., how regional tectono-sedimentological processes influence the formation of sedimentary sequences. We report here the discovery of madtsoiid snake remains from the early Paleocene Khadro Formation (Ranikot Group, Sindh, Southern Pakistan). These specimens consist of vertebrae and are referred to Gigantophis. This is the first report of Gigantophis from outside of Africa. The problem of the generic distinction between Gigantophis and Madtsoia is stressed. The specimens from Pakistan slightly differ from the single species (G. garstini) referred to the genus Gigantophis, but the available material does not allow further considerations and the fossil is referred to as Gigantophis sp. However, Gigantophis sp. from the Khadro Formation is more closely related to G. garstini, that is known only from the middle and late Eocene of northern Africa, than to any other species, thus suggesting dispersal between these two areas during the Paleocene or earlier. These results are consistent with the hypothesis of intermittent dispersals between the Indo-Pakistan Plate and Africa suggested by other fossil evidences. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study reported the detrital zircon U-Pb geochronology of the Cenozoic sequence exposed in Kotli, northwestern Himalaya, Pakistan, which forms part of the Kashmir foreland basin. The U-Pb detrital age patterns of the Paleocene Patala Formation show a major age cluster between ~130–290 Ma, ~500–1000 Ma and ~1000–1500 Ma, which mainly resembles the lesser and higher Himalayan sequence. However, the younger age pattern (~130–290 Ma) can be matched to the ages of the ophiolites exposed along the Indus–Tsangpo suture zone. In addition, two younger grains with 57 Ma and 55 Ma ages may indicate a contribution from the Kohistan-Ladakh arc. The detrital zircons in the upper Tertiary sequence show the increased input of younger detrital ages <100 Ma, with more pronounced peaks at ~36–58 Ma, ~72–94 Ma and ~102–166 Ma, indicating the strong resemblance to the Asian sources including the Kohistan–Ladakh arc, Karakoram block and Gangdese batholith. This provenance shift, recorded in the upper portion of Patala Formation and becoming more visible in the upper Tertiary clastic sequence (Kuldana and Murree formations), is related to the collision of the Indian and Asian plates in the northwestern Himalayas. Considering the age of the Patala Formation, we suggest that the Indian and Asian plates collided during 57–55 Ma in the northwestern Himalayas, Pakistan. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article describes a study which examined the Lockhart Limestone of Paleocene age in the Changlagali area of Galiat in Pakistan. On the basis of field and petrographic characteristics, researchers identified and interpreted distinct textures, allochem types, fossil contents and sedimentary structures. Other properties of the limestone identified by the researchers are mentioned.
